• Assigning static IP and domain name mapping to local server in LAN

  I have developed a web application which will be deployed in a LAN environemnt. Clients will be Computers/Android Tablets/IPAD In order for communication between client and local server 1) need to assign a static IP to local server. 2) need a domian name mapping for that IP address in Local environment. 3) router should assign the same static IP if it gets restarted etc. I am using a windows XP machine as Local server OS. Do i need to take care of router configurations before buying one, or all routers will have same capability to perform this task. I am not a network specialist, so Sorry if this question sounds stupid. Thanks

• Bad to be logged in as admin all the time?

  At the office where I work, three of the other members of the IT staff are logged into their computers all the time with accounts that are members of the domain administrators group. I have serious concerns about being logged in with admin rights (either local or for the domain). As such, for everyday computer use, I use an account that just has regular user privelages. I also have an different account that is part of the domain admins group. I use this account when I need to do something that requires elevated privilages on my computer, one of the servers, or on another user's computer. What is the best practice here? Should network admins be logged in with rights to the entire network all the time (or even their local computer for that matter)?

• Tools for retrieving and modifying multi-value attributes in Microsoft ActiveDirectory

  Most attributes in MSAD are single-valued and pose no problem. I am familiar with the dsquery user -samid jdoe | dsmod -webpg "http://some.url/" method. However, some attributes are multi-valued, such as telephone number and webpage. These values can be managed through the Active Directory Users & Computers Microsoft Console (dsa.msc) via the dialogue shown by clicking on the "Other..." button, but I'd really rather script the modifications. It seems to me that dsmod & dsget do not support multi-value retrieval and editing; only the first value of the set seems to be accesible. Am I correct? If I am not correct, I would appreciate a syntax example. If I am correct, would you please recommend an alternative scriptable tool that can handle multi-value attributes? The more "official and supported" the tool, the better.

• Slow network file access with VMWare Server and Windows 7

  I have Windows 7 32-bit virtual machine running in a VMWare Server virtual machine. The host is Windows 7 64-bit. When I copy files between them it is extremely slow - it will take several minutes to copy even a 1 MB file. I can upload the file to an website and then download it again almost instantaneously by comparison. Browsing the network is quite zippy and has no problems. I have been unable to set up a HomeGroup between the computers though - the guest always times out without managing to get setup. Any ideas on how I should go about tracking down where the problem is?

We are planning to configure Active Directory NAT DNS server Visual Studio Team Foundation Server Subversion (SVN) Trac (Bug tracking tool) FTP server And our Hardware configuration is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual (Core processor 5600+, 2.60 GHz) Asus motherboard (M2N series) Transcend 4 GB RAM (800 MHz) 500 GB Hard Disk (RAID enabled) But my colleague is advising me AMD won't suite for servers platforms, and use Intel environment. Also they telling we can't install all the services to one server. I got confusion what to do?... Is really can`t install above services to AMD computer? Thanks...

• rails associations - How would you represent this relationship?

Newspaper-->has_many-->Articles Newspaper-->has_many--->Subscribers Subscribers are allowed to save the articles for their personal page. Two Questions: 1) How would the relationship look like in rails? How would the action 'save' look like? The following using has_many does not seem right to me: ArticleController < ApplicationController def save a = Article.find(101) @user.saved_articles << a end 2) Do I need a join table Saved_Articles that looked like this? • Merging partitions and removing windows of one partition

  I have two partitions on my laptop, I created a new one when installing windows 8 pro because windows 7 wouldn't upgrade to it for some odd reason. The main partition, which has 631 GB ( has windows 7 installed on it, and the second partition is 49.9 GB and has windows 8 installed on it. What I need to do is remove windows 7 from the other one (Yeah its dual booting), make it so it boots straight into windows 8, without showing the dual boot screen, and also merge the two drives together. Only problem is, I have no idea how to do this. Please don't use complete lamens terms, I am a software developer so I know at least a bit about computers. • Computer hobby and repairs

  I have been a fulltime student recently working on graduate work to complete a graduate degree. While continuing my studies I have maintained my computer hobby. However, recently my computer hobby has been threatening to turn into a full-fledged side business. Because I am starting to have people come to me for computer help who I have never met before (who generally heard word-of-mouth from other people whose computers I looked at) I am seriously considering putting my conditions for working on a computer into writing (for potential damage control and perhaps liability reasons). Are there any standards for this that I should reference? Should responsibility be waived for times when the computer is left in my care or any time I look at a machine? Any advice you can provide here would be appreciated. What other lessons have you learned that I should be aware of in relation to helping people while continuing my studies as a hobby? • Network bottleneck/throttling issue

  Hi all, It's my first day at a new company and i've been given the task to find out an issue with the internet connection. I noticed that whilst I was downloading a large file, the network grinds to a halt, except for my download. At first I thought it was the internet connection/modem but it seems that whilst the lockdown occurs, I am unable to access any network device. Has anyone experienced this before and if so, do you have any pointers? Looking at the setup. They have an DSL modem that connects to a 10/100 switch. There are only 5-6 computers on the network. • windows 2003 domain and windows xp

  I had to move a computer account from one OU to another OU for the settings to be same as with other computers in the OU. After the computer account was moved to other domain, i reset the computer account. Now there is no domain access to this computer even using domain admin acccount. The error message is that windows cannot connect to domain because your computer account was not found.I reset the computer account again and that didnt make any difference. Local admin access was possilbe and i tried to change the computer to workgroup to join back to domain, but workgroup changing option is greyed out. Is there any way I can solve this issue.   I'm working on a Google Chrome Extension and would like to get an HTML from within my popup HTML to call functions within my loaded javascript file. My popup document looks like this: <select id="values"> <option>Foo</option> <option>Bar</option> </select> And the contents of my scripts.js file follow: $(function(){ $("#values").change(function(){ alert("Foo"); }); }); This isn't doing what I expect though - alerting "Foo" anytime I change a value in my popup HTML. How can I get these two files to communicate with eachother? Or can they at all?

  I have somewhat of a strange question that is not really technical, but I do hope to collect meaningful advice. I'm building a large web application, basically a photo sharing community site. As part of this site, logged-in users can go to their profile, from which they can see their own things (images, comments, votes) as well as edit their details and preferences. Users can also see profiles of others users (their images, comments, votes), but of course not edit their details. The question I have is simple but it keeps bothering me: What to call the personal links and content of a user? Should they be named "Your": Your images Your profile ... ...or "My": My images My profile ...or perhaps named, even if you're logged in: Fledder's images Fledder's profile As unimportant as it may sounds, I'm really looking for advice in this area. I'm particularly interested in any standards, why an option is preferred, and in which contexts it is preferred.

  I just bought an HP Omni 27 1057c from Sams Club. I like it a lot, but I want more performance. discovered that the integrated Intel HD 2500 graphics is almost useless for most games. • Redirect users to internal webpage on first visit

  I have a lan of maybe 20 - 30 computers, and a Windows server 2003 server on hand (I can also run any x86 Linux distro). What I am trying to do, is to redirect users to a webserver inside the LAN the first time they visit certain domains. For example, the first time a user visits "google.com", they will be redirected to 192.168.1.2 (a webserver, where they will be shown a custom webpage), attempts after that will go to google. Pretty much what I am trying to do, is to provide a captive server like service, showing people a custom webpage the first time they try to access certain websites (but not others). I'm pretty flexable on how this can be done, as long as it works. Can you guys give me an idea on how to approach this problem? I am looking for (hopefully) a free solutions. Thanks

• Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P won't boot from USB drive with RAID enabled

  I've got a Windows 7 installation image on my USB hard drive, which is set up to be bootable. I know it works because I've used it on several computers, and it works on the computer I'm trying to install as long as the RAID controller is disabled. However, when I enable the RAID controller and attempt to boot from the USB driver, it hangs for 30-60 seconds and then gives me the "disk boot failure, insert system disk" error like it can't find any OS. Just for laughs, I disabled the RAID controller again and it booted fine. I'm having separate, unrelated issues burning a dvd with the ISO, so I would prefer to get this working.

• Is there any reason to subnet a home network?

  For networks I understand we set a netmask on each computer to let it know what IPs it can talk to without going through the router - IPs on the same subnet can talk directly to each other and do not have to go through a router/switch. However, in today's home networks (and I suspect corporate networks as well) every computer is connected to a router/switch (at the low cost of today's hardware I doubt there it much of a market for wired repeaters/hubs). This seems to obviate the need for a subnet mask and subnetting. Considering that in most modern home architectures every computer goes through the router, even to talk to computers on the same network, is there any reason for me to subnet a home network?

• Should I remove all unmanged switches from my network?

  I have a office network with approx 150 devices (computers/printers/ip phones). Almost all of the end point devices have straight run Cat5e from my Hp switches directly to the device. IP phones for each end user sit between the hp switch and computer. (hp switch - in to phone out of phone in to computer) While I have gotten rid of most of them, I still have a couple linksys unmanaged switches that split off to 2 or more devices. I have heard various reasons for removing these switches but not entirely sure if it actually degrades the network. I agree that eliminating these switches certainly cleans up the network from a management standpoint. Are these unmanaged switches bad for my network? Is there a clear advantage to having 'home run' cable runs to each of my end point devices?

  What online backup tool allows you to: A) Back up Windows, Linux and optionally Mac desktops and servers to the cloud B) Do so by first backing up to a central server or appliance C) Allow restoring from that appliance when possible and if not go to the cloud For now the best option I have seen is i365 by seagate with an appliance between the local computers and the cloud. I know Microsoft also has an i365 plugin for DPM, as well as an Iron Mountain plugin. However, I feel that there must be a simpler way to do this. Can any of the "simpler" solutions like Jungle Disk or anything else going to s3, Mozy, Carbonite, Crashplan, etc do this? Thank you

• Server 2008 R2 How to Change Windows 7 Basic Theme Color

  We're deploying thin clients connecting to a terminal server farm. The computers have high visibility to the public and I would like them to at least look presentable and not like something out of 1995. So I installed the Desktop Experience feature and enabled the Theme service. The server will not support Aero because it has no 3D graphics, but we can enable the Windows 7 Basic theme, which has the Aero look without the 3D effects. The problem with that theme is that you can select any window color you want, as long as it's baby boy blue. Is there a way to make those windows another color? The window color controls do nothing.

• powerpoint make computer shut down on dell optiplex 760

  At my office we upgraded group of computers to windows 7 + office 2010, few of us have problem that when we work on powerpoint - once in a while the computer suddenly shut down (with out any message). Some of us - has no such problems. We checked and fount that the people who experience problems - use Dell Optiplex 760 PC, and everyone that have no problems use other models. We also found out that the processors of the 760's are not the same - some are Intel E7400 and one is Intel E8400, so I suspect that maybe the mother board is the problem Does any one no this problem?   I am setting up a small network and i am stuck at rerouting the Links folder on Windows 7. What i am trying to accomplish is to keep some particular directories stored on a server and all client computers will actually link to those folders, one of which is the Links folder. I took a look at the registry and found most of the things in : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders But the Links folder isn't there so im wondering if it's possible to sync that folder over several PCs too without moving all the user directories to the server Any hint is appreciated!

• Route packets from one VPN to another

  I have two OpenVPN servers (10.8.0.0 and 10.9.0.0) set up on my OpenSUSE server. Within one network, each computer is visible to any other one, but I'd like to make it so that computers are visible across networks. I'd like to route the packets like this: when a user (say 10.8.0.6) pings an address on the other VPN (10.9.0.6), the packets are routed to the 10.9.0.1 and then to the appropriate computer in this VPN. How do I achieve this using iptables or a different tool? I tried the commands at the end of this section with no avail.

• Does using cat5e cables yield any disadvantages in combination with cat6/cat6a network?

  If I were to have a fully compliant cat6 or cat6a network running through my walls... that is to say, wires and jacks... What would be the concequence of plugging a cat5e wire into one of the jacks? I'm assuming that it would still run at cat5e standards, but obviously not cat6/6a standards because the whole connection is not cat6. I only ask because it seems silly to me to make a bunch of cat6 patch cables for connections that don't really matter, like standard desktop computers and other equipment. Or will doing so hamper the whole network?

• Refurbished System Windows License Key and OEM Media

  According to this question, it is legal to use a Windows 7 OEM license that is presently installed as a 32-bit install with a 64-bit version of Windows 7. With that in mind, I purchased several refurbished systems through TigerDirect. When I received the computers today, I found that they have a Windows 7 license key attached to them that says it is a "refurbished key." A flyer in the box also seemed to imply that this key would not work with regular OEM media. Has anyone tried using regular OEM media with a refurbished key? I had hoped to create a new 64-bit WIM image that I could use on these systems, but I don't want to try replacing the default install with this new 64-bit install only to find that the key won't validate. If it requires a special customized image, is it possible to convert another type of Windows 7 disc into the required sort much as one can convert a retail disc to an OEM one (and vise versa)?

• How to modify PATH variable for X11 during log-in?

  Original question is here: Overwriting "Print Screen" actions in linux without administrative rights. Decided to revise my question, based on what I learned there: Essentially, my problem is that I am working on some lab computers (read: no administrative rights) that, if I log in, I need to change the PATH variable as X11 starts. The reason is that I need to change the PATH variable at this time, as opposed to later, is that the Print Screen command seems to "bind" during login (forgive my bad explanation of this). You can see in the work-around I listed in the previous section, that I can make it work by starting a new X, but I was wondering if it is possible to change upon login. Any ideas?
