• Steps to manage a large project [closed]

  Software development is an area where parallel development to its fullest form is very difficult to achieve, although you could get reasonably close with the right design. This is especially true for game development. That being said, if you are designing a game from scratch from engine to front end, what steps should be taken in order? How would you efficiently manage your project and your team? I'm asking because several people and I are interested in working on a relatively large project for learning purposes. Initially, we were going to use a proprietary engine like Unity, but since we wanted to learn how the engine works, we're going to start from bottom. • I'm a beginner Java programmer but I want to be useful

  Programming has always interested me, but after learning some of the basics of Java(I'm talking high school level), I don't really know what to do from there. I want to be able to apply what I learned in some way, whether it be a volunteer project or something, but I probably don't know enough programming. Is it possible for a novice Java programmer to be useful in some way whatsoever. I want to do this because I feel like I could learn more about programming by helping people in theirs, but I'm not sure if I'm even able to this though. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can contribute to other people's project in some way or how to apply it in some way?

• Should I understand SVN before I jump to GIT?

  I work in a department where no one has ever used source control before, including myself. I am trying to push the concept. I have spent a little while researching SVN. I some basics learned. I can Create/update/checkout/commit with command line and from Tortoise. I am starting to learn how to tag and branch but still confused a lot about conflicts between branches and trunk etc. I am still learning, but I do not have a physical person who can show me anything. Its all from books/tutorials and trial and error. From what I have read online it seems like git is the better thing to know, but its also more complicated. I don't want to overwhelm myself. Should I continue to master svn before moving to git or would I be wiser to just jump to git now? Are there pros and cons to both approaches?

So you may imagine many detour were there in my way, that is true. And I want to avoid getting lost again if possible. When googling about existing GUI framework, I found it is hard to choose my start point from GTK, QT, and lot of less famous peers. What are important factors when you guys are facing that problem? Will it be a good idea to pick a small enough library and feel its fundamental ideas?

• Most Useful New Technology?

  I'm looking to take a sort of sabbatical, and I'd love to use it to learn a new technology. My question is this: What's the most useful "new" technology for a software engineer to use? Node.js, iOS programming, Android, something else? I'd prefer to stay away from anything too new or experimental, since those are, in my experience, rarely actually used in professional production environments (for better or worse). Does anyone happen to have stats on how many jobs there are for each new technology or have anecdotes about how fun each one is? I've been using python/Django, so that's out, and it's similar to Ruby so i don't think learning Ruby would be that useful to expanding my skills. Anyone have any other ideas?

• What is "egoless programming"?

  I first heard this term about fifteen years ago. My understanding is similar to that described in the Wikipedia article and a TechRepublic article: you work with your colleagues in a "friendly, collegiate way in which personal feelings are put aside". It includes things like doing peer reviews with mutual respect and a desire to learn, and not feeling like you "own" code, so if somebody has a suggestion or says there's a bug or needs to change it, you don't get defensive about it. I've also thought it was largely about having an attitude that makes for good relations with other programmers with the goal of improving the code. So I haven't seen it as being incompatible with taking pride in the quality of your work or feeling regret if something you did caused your customer a problem. However, an answer to a recent question makes me think some other programmers have different understandings about "egoless programming". So what is the correct definition? And what are its implications?

  I have a handful of popular articles on my blog (nothing huge), and they attract the occasional developer who wants help implementing some code grabbed from my blog. Now I'm getting people who haven't made any attempt to learn the code, email me their code, and expect me to trace it through for them. I'm sure anyone with a half-popular blog gets similar requests. What's the best way to deal with this scenario? I want to put together a boilerplate response including these points: How far have you gone with this on your own? (is it any benefit for anyone if I say they are being imposing) I'm happy to help with any problems you find in my code Point them to other forms of help such as stackoverflow, diagnostic tools relevant to the topic.

• How to speak to a computer

  I am a self taught.. NEW..programmer. The language I chose was Objective-C so I can write for Apple products. I have learned the hard way that Objective-C has a steep learning curve but have forced myself to look at it over and over until I get it. I feel I am completing one major step and that is becoming very comfortable with the syntax and now as I enter the next big step...finding out what is possible with a computer language - I am thinking that all software is just developed within the confines of classes-loops-booleans-IF/OR statements-variables-etc. Is that a true assessment? When thinking of software in my head do I just need to learn to convert it all to arrays-loops/variables/classes - IF/OR statements - etc? Sorry if this question sounds funny but I am just learning how to take the language in my head and talk (what I think is) the language of a computer. Is there a good book or tutorial that helps illustrate how to speak computer speak?

  I'm still pretty new to game programming and any tutorial that I have worked with stuck to only games with the initial screen. I want to start creating my own games but there are a few things that I still need to learn. One of them is how to create a game that side-scrolls. For example; Mario... Or ANY type of game like that... Can anyone give me a small example to create something like that. I'm not asking for any specific language because currently in school I am learning javascript but I know some c++/java/processing/objective-c as well. So any of those languages would be fine and I could probably implement it in any of the others... • What is this called?

  I'm hoping there's a book or something out there for me to get... If I have a class that has Collection as an instance variable, what is that method of coding called? A design pattern? If so, where can I find more information on it? As I've been working with this mentor, he's really helped me understand my programming weakness and that weakness is thinking in terms of collections or relationships between objects. It just seems so difficult for me right now and I need to read to become smarter. • Is Java a good choice for cross-platform games?

  I'm looking to create a game in Java and would like it to work on Windows, Linux, and Mac. I'm pretty sure C# is a bad choice for this, and I don't have enough experience in C or C++. I want to stay away from Flash. Therefore, Is Java a good choice for me? Mostly, I use C#, and think that Java is similar, so I assume it won't be that hard to learn. But is it fast enough? • Is it ok to run with unknown video device?

  I'm new to linux and just starting to learn. From what I've read and experimented with there's no more support for older ati mobility cards. I resolved a few boot issues with my first install of Ubuntu 12.10(now on clean install #3) and my system seems to function ok with video unknown. Picture quality is good and no issues with video playback. It functions for my purposes. Should I leave it as is......or will this cause problems I'm not aware of? Thanks

  Is there a 'design pattern' styled listing of common/popular algorithms anywhere? Specifically, something that has a similar format along the lines of: Algorithm Name: e.g., Quick Sort, Bubble Sort, etc. Problem: A description of the stereotypical problem the algorithm is supposed to address Description: Description of the solution Implementation: Code examples of the solution Big O Rating: Self-explanatory Similar Algorithms: Algorithms that address the same problem in different ways, or similar problems I really like the GoF design pattern listing style, and I think it would help me learn various algorithms better/easier if I could find a resource that was similar in terms of organization.

• How are vertex shader outs sent as inputs to the fragment shader?

  I'm learning some OpenGL 3.2 way of doing things and I think it's quite great, I'm actually understanding more of shaders and non-fixed pipeline in 1 week rather than those 2 years I tried to learn OpenGL fixed pipeline functions. But here's my question: From what I think I've understood the vertex shader is run for each vertexes in the VBO. But the fragments shader is run per each pixel (is that right?) which is a huge number compared to let's say 3 vertexes of a triangle. Now it seems that in the vertex shader the out variables (like colors and stuff) are passed 1 to 1 to the fragment shader. But let's say that I pass to the fragment shader the position of the vertex in the vertex shader. How is all executed? What vertex (A, B or C of the hipothetical triangle) is passed per each fragment and why?

• What Languages are mostly understood "intuitively" and could benefit from a more formal learning approach?

  In a presentation, i stumbled upon the Statement "JavaScript is a Language everybody uses, yet nearly noone seems to find it neccessary to learn how it works". And indeed, not many of the programmers i know could explain javascript's prototype concept, or why functions need to be 'bound' to this. CSS seems to be another example of this behaviour: everyone knows how to put a 'class' to an element, and to write a style .myclass { ... }, but only a few even know of margin-collapse. My question is: are there more of those languages, technologies, concepts, that are so prevalent that we dont even notice them as something worth learning while we use them?
