• How well supported is the ATI graphics on a Sony VAIO SA?

  This is the first time i will be buying a laptop/desktop to use as a Ubuntu platform with ATI. Now i did notice a while back that ATI drivers were not in cahoots with Linux as of yet. I am just wondering if any one is still experiencing ATI issues, or this is no longer the case. I am looking to spend money on a laptop Upgrade, but I don't want to spend a screw load of money just to find out I can only use windows and my Graphics driver does not work. So the Question is: What's ATI Support like on Ubuntu 10.10 Here is what im thinking of buying http://www.gadgetfreak.gr/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/SB_S08_keyboard_B_us_FP-1024x716.jpg, If any one has the Sony VAIO SA Series and installed Ubuntu on it, please do share your story, about driver problems. On a side note my old Sony S-Series which im using now, i never got the fingerprint reader or the webcam working on it, has any one been able to do this for the new models? I preferably dont care about the fingerprint reader but do care about the webcam.

  As a Java developer, I am developing trying to use the clean code rules. But in my team we are facing a concrete problem: We have a business layer offering a service called "createObject", this service makes a lot of operation which can result to problem. E.g: parentObjectDontExist, objectAlreadyExist, dontHaveAuthorizationToCreate, operationFailed... and we want the UI using this service to display different information messages depending which error occurred. In old java dev, we should have create all signed exception type and throw it in createObject. As Clean code says, it is forbidden to use Exception for business logic AND signed exceptions are evil... Why not...But i don't know how to solved this problem and i don't want to use return code.   I know some of you have been waiting patiently, so I'm pleased to announce that the JET bundle is now available for download on the Oracle Technology Network. I've migrated most of the content from the old Sun wiki site, and got the download in a single handy location on OTN. Download JET now.  The version available is the current latest, which is 4.9.4. This version contains a number of updates, the most significant of which is the ability to specify slot locations instead of the traditional cXtYdZsN nomenclature. This is pretty useful when trying to Jumpstart multiple servers with SAS2.0 based HBAs, as they will have the WWN embedded in the cXtYdZsN name, and it's pretty difficult to guess what that will be until you've booted the server. • Where does Rails get it's datetime for creating records?

  I have a rails app with a data model called 'jobs' and i'm faced with a critical design choice crossroads. I don't know enough about Rails and it's inner workings to be able to say for sure what I should do despite a complete read of the rails and ruby docs. I want to be able to accurately display the age of a job record in days. So when a customer logs in, they can see that the job they submitted is 'x' days old. Where does a rails app on Heroku get it's time stamps? From Heroku? or the customers system clock? If a customer has a out of date system clock and submits a job, it could really mess up the sorting of their job list, not to mention me the overseer of job records. Any advice out there? EDIT: Just to be clear, i'm not asking how to list jobs by their date, but to which clock does a rails app on Heroku base it's records.

• Problems after upgrading to 14.04 (only background and pointer after login)

  After upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04 I could log in to my X session (albeit with really low graphics). While trying to fix the graphics, I managed to break the X session. Now, after typing my password in the unity-greeter, the items disappear and I can only see the desktop background and the pointer. This happens for every user. I can still log in in tty's. How can I solve this? Also, I cannot seem to be able to install nvidia-current as it tries to install nvidia-304 and it depends on old video-abi libraries. Is there a way to tell the package manager that nvidia-current should use a newer version?

• Remove drive partitions before Installing 12.04?

  I have an old box and want to switch to Ubuntu 12.04. It has two hard drives. The first is a 40 gig disk that runs Windows XP; the other is 80 gigs partitioned into 40, 20, and 20 gigs. I am prepared to abandon Windows altogether and everything stored on the drives. So my question is, do I just install from CD/DVD onto the C drive? Or onto one of the partitions in the other disk first and then uninstall Windows? What will happen to the partitions on the second disk, which I don't particularly see a need for? Thanks in advance for any advice.

• Moving a LAMP set up from 32 bit to 64 bit

  Hello everyone... I have setup an Ubuntu server 10.10 32bit on an old Dell D610 Laptop for testing. I have the latest PHP, MySQL and Apache with Wordpress installed. After the testing is over and once I finish adding material to my wordpress I will build a Ubuntu 10.10 64bit VM on Hyper-V. What I am wondering is , if it's best practice to build everything from scratch (which will take me more time and would like to avoid) or transfer the database and all other settings? If I choose to transfer how and what I need to do? Here's where I'd like some help as I am still an intermediate admin (If I can call it that!) I am looking forward for your help. Thanks!

  How i can buy the contents of the server of archive.ubuntu.com (for lucid lynx)? In my country i have ultra slow connection. It will take years for downloading all these gigabytes. Because, canonical will stop supporting ubuntu 10.04, i want all the files now, before it's too late. i know that all files will be transfer to old.dir but i think some will be lost.   I want to install gcc compiler 4.7 to use c++11 features. I have looked on the internet for instructions, and I found in several websites these steps: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:Ubuntu-toolchain-r/test sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gcc-4.7 g++-4.7 The problem is that my console freezes when adding the ppa. At first I thought it was due to having an old Ubuntu version (11.04). So I have upgraded to 11.10 and then 12.04, and everything seems to work OK. But still having the same problem. Any help?

• Switching to an external display, when primary is broken

  I've successfully install Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop (x86) on an old(er) laptop that unfortunately has a broken screen, so there is an external monitor plugged in. On the livecd it come up on the secondary display just fine and I was able to install ubuntu and everything. Unfortunately when I reboot into Ubuntu proper now, the secondary display is off and I'm literally driving blind here trying to switch it to the secondary display. Using Nvidia open source drivers. Things I've tried: Rebooting back into livecd, mounting the partition and trying in vain to find a config file (it uses the open source drivers so no Xorg.conf I could edit manually) Trying to blind-type xrandr settings into what I hope is terminal: xrandr --output VGA1 --auto (nothing happened) Trying to blind install openssh-server so I could ssh into it and maybe configure it from my working computer. For some reason though, no luck. Ubuntu really should default to expanding to all screens for this use case.

  Possible Duplicate: What tools do you use for 2D art/sprite creation? What do you folks suggest for creating sprite graphics and sprite sheets? I fiddle with pixelformer and tilestudio. Pixelfromer has a kicken interface, it is quick and easy to make graphics, but a bit cumbersom if you want to make a spritemap. Tile Studio is a interesting mix or tiles and maps, but it is a bit buggy and basic. The Adobe series, just don't really seem to handle tiny graphics well. (there is a previous posting of this question existing, but it is a year old and I was hoping for further/updated input from the community)

For example, the logging sybsystem: Option 1: All in one package, named to sort nicely Log - static accessor LogMonitor - interface for log minotor LogMonitorBase - abstract class LogMonitorStdout - print log to console LogWriter - interface for file logger LogWriterSimple - log writer with just one log file LogWriterArchiving - log writer that handles old log files Option 2: Subpackages for Monitors and Writers, with better names Log monitors/LogMonitor monitors/BaseMonitor monitors/StdoutMonitor writers/LogWriter writers/SimpleLog writers/ArchivingLog The second maybe looks better, but perhaps it's not so practical from the java point of view (two extra packages). What do you suggest as the best practice here? A lot in one package, grouped by naming prefixes, or a lot of subpackages with better names?

• Why can't I update to 11.04?

  I am using Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit, and I can browse the internet fine. I am typing this using the machine. When I attempt to use the Ubuntu Update Manager to update to 11.04, I get this error message: Failed to Fetch Fetching the upgrade failed.There may be a network problem. And when I try to change servers, here is what I get: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.91.15 80] It repeats with other lines, 404 not found. Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. Any ideas?

• Ubuntu on low powered laptop

  First off, I am new to Ubuntu. I come from a Windows background (DOS before that) and am loving it so far. I installed it on an older Dell laptop that I wanted to get another year out of. I set this machine up primarily as a LAMP development machine for a project I am working on. The machine is a Vostro 1500 and it has 4GB RAM (maxed) and an upgraded hard drive. I can't watch YouTube videos for long before it starts to overheat and start acting sporadic. I can live without YouTube but every so often the application switching (alt-tab) gets slower and begins not showing all applications and the Dash home quits displaying properly. I am sure I am asking a lot of this old machine. What I really want to know is: are there any settings in Ubuntu that allow me to lower the graphic effects (fade-ins, transparencies, fancy transitions, etc) that would be less taxing on the video card?

• LXDE will not suspend when laptop lid is closed, and will die when woken up

  I am not an experienced Linux user, although I have been using Ubuntu occassionally some time already. ( Since Feisty Fawn probably? ). Now I installed Ubuntu 11.10 and it is nice ( well, after I installed LXDE, Unity sucks and I didn't really like gnome-fallback-session ), but it has one problem: After being suspended, when I wake my computer up, it starts up and in about 5 seconds it dies. Like a normal shutdown. Then, when I start it again, the screen stays blank, so I have to hard-turn it off - only then, when I turn it on, it works. It is an MSI laptop, about 3-4 years old. The second problem is: After installing LXDE, when I close the laptop lid, it does not suspend. I can only suspend using the shutdown menu - and the waking up problem remains. I've tried moving the entire site to the WWW directory, but then all my forms return "The HTTP verb POST used to access path is not allowed". Additionally, all the solutions I've found online only work on a page by page basis. Is there a simpler/faster way to migrate a large website containing many forms to IIS7? • iOS App Store Under 18 - Post via private limited company? [closed]

  I'm 17 years old and wish to post an application on the iOS App Store. My situation is a little different to other users doing the same thing, though. I'm finding this very frustrating. It's very annoying that Apple don't let younger talent post themselves. Is it true that if I do post under my Father's name I can choose a different name to be listed on the app store? I want to keep this professional, I don't want my father's name to appear underneath the application on the store. :P I have registered myself as the company director of a private limited company. Even though I'm the only one in the company, is this a way to bypass the 18+ restriction or do I need a minimum of 2 employees? Why the hell has this been closed? Thanks

Sure, Google will need some time to index new pages and we expect our SERP positions will be not so good as they are now for some time. We also have an old idea to remove www from our domain name. It seems, it's the right time to do these two works together with publishing the website with updated contents. • Issues with HP Mini 110-1125NR

  Just finished installing Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin on my HP Mini 110-1125NR and im having small, but rather irritating issues. I installed it over the Windows 7 (starter) which came with the netbook. Firstly, it will only boot from the USB flashdisk. If i try to boot from the hardrive, it goes to a black screen. Second, built-in wireless wont activate. system says its enabled and on, but the light indicator is still orange (as if its off), and i cant get a signal from my home wi-fi I havent found any solved threads for inspiration, and mos of them are pretty old (1 year +) so i thought of giving a try to see if any of you guys System is: HP Mini 110-1100 1gb memory Intel Atom CPU N270 @ 1.60GHz x 2 Os - Precise Pangolin - Ubuntu 12.04 160gb Hard disk If any of you are aware of the solutions of my issues it'd be awesome Thanks in advance for any help!

• error when installing rmagic gem on Ubuntu 12.04 for Ruby on Rails

  0 down vote favorite I am trying to get my Ruby on Rails application working and installing RMagic gem. But I get an error that says "Can't install RMagick 2.13.1. Can't find the ImageMagick library or one of the dependent libraries." Altough I have ImageMagick installed with its dependences. Terminal log : http://pastebin.com/vcgkbwZR I even tried to installed RMagic from Synaptic, but I get the same error when I run "bundle" command. Through my search, some people had problem with lib dependencies, but I believed I have them all installed. Another solution I found is this ( error installing RMagick from gem ) a little bit old and not sure if it is going to work for 12.04. BUT, I don't know where those configurations should go.

• Switching Workspace in Xubuntu Oneiric is slow, how to improve it?

  The processor is a single core AMD Sempron 1.6 GHz. While it is a few years old, workspace switching under Ubuntu Lucid / Gnome to ANY workspace was always instant, even when a lot of apps were open. Under Xubuntu Oneiric, switching to an empty workspace is instant, but switching to a workspace with 5 open applications takes 8 to 9 seconds. Compiz is not installed. Since XFCE is said to be more light weight than Gnome, switching should be instant too, isn't it ? How can this be improved ?
