• What metric captures why my OSX machine is so slow during XCode indexing

  My entire machine OSX Lion machine slows down while XCode 4.4 is indexing. The CPU is less than 10% busy, I've got over 500 MB free memory, plenty of disk space, disk IO rate is not high, network activity is not high. Indexing just a few files can take minutes and builds are extremely slow. While this is going on, even loading a new web page in Chrome can be slow. Knowing how to fix it would be great, but more fundamentally how can I measure what is actually going slowly? What metrics should I be looking at? Nothing in Activity Monitor, iostat, top, or sar betray anything about what's going on to me. Even getting a man page is interminable.

• Wi-Fi connected but can't go to any site

  My Windows 7 laptop can connect to our Wi-Fi signal, I can sign in on Yahoo! Messenger, but I can't go to any site. I can access the Net on other devices. The issue started a few weeks ago, so I've been troubleshooting since then in vain. There's no virus, and I already used System Restore. In Wireless Network Connection Status, the received activity is greater than the sent activity. I turned off Windows Firewall and still no Net access. My ping tests: How do I fix this?

  Hi, in Java I think it is possible to cruise through jar files like they were not compressed. Is there some similar (and portable) thing in C/C++ ? I would like to import binary data into memory from a large (zipped or similar) file without decompressing to disk first and afterwards writing to disk in a compressed way. Maybe some trick with shell pipes and the zip utility?

  Hi, I am developing an application in Eclipse build ID 20090920-1017 using android SDK 2.2 and testing on a Google Nexus One. For the purposes of the tests below I am using the IME "Android keyboard" on a non-rooted phone. I have an EditText widget which exhibits some very strange behavior. I can type text, and then press the "del" key to delete that text; but after I enter a 'space' character, the "del" key will no longer remove characters before that space character. An example speaks a thousand words, so consider the following two incredibly simple applications... • How can I force a merge of all WAL files in pg_xlog back into my base "data" directory?

  Question: Is there a way to tell Postgres (9.2) to "merge all WAL files in pg_xlog back into the non-WAL data files, and then delete all WAL files successfully merged?" I would like to be able to "force" this operation; i.e. checkpoint_segments or archiving settings should be ignored. The filesystem WAL buffer (pg_xlog) directory should be emptied, or nearly emptied. It's fine if some or all of the space consumed by the pg_xlog directory is then consumed by the data directory; our DBA has asked for WAL database backups without any backlogged WALs, but space consumption is not a concern. Having near-zero WAL activity during this operation is a fine constraint. I can ensure that the database server is either shut down or not connectible (zero user-generated transaction load) during this process. Essentially, I'd like Postgres to ignore archiving/checkpoint retention policies temporarily, and flush all WAL activity to the core database files, leaving pg_xlog in the same state as if the database were recently created--with very few WAL files. What I've Tried: I know that the pg_basebackup utility performs something like this (it generates an almost-all-WALs-merged copy of a Postgres instance's data directory), but we aren't ready to use it on all our systems yet, as we are still testing replication settings; I'm hoping for a more short-term solution. I've tried issuing CHECKPOINT commands, but they just recycle one WAL file and replace it with another (that is, if they do anything at all; if I issue them during database idle time, they do nothing). pg_switch_xlog() similarly just forces a switch to the next log segment; it doesn't flush all queued/buffered segments. I've also played with the pg_resetxlog utility. That utility sort of does what I want, but all of its usage docs seem to indicate that it destroys (rather than flushing out of the transaction log and into the main data files) some or all of the WAL data. Is that impression accurate? If not, can I use pg_resetxlog during a zero-WAL-activity period to force a flush of all queued WAL data to non-WAL data? If the answer to that is negative, how can I achieve this goal? Thanks!

  I'm looking for a way to get the .dmg path of a mounted disk image with just its mount point. I want to write a "simple" Finder service that ejects the disk image and trashes the accompanying .dmg. The ejecting is trivial, but I'm at a loss as to how to figure out the path of the .dmg, given just the mount point. diskutil doesn't seem to know or isn't saying. It's for a script, so AppleScript- or shell-based suggestions are preferred.

The type or namespace 'Form1' could not be found(are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) cannot even Change the name back to Form1. it says cannot find WebBrowser.cs on disk its is renamed or deleted from the disk.   I have this laptop, which has a i3 processor, 4gb memory, 7200rpm hard drive. So there is nothing wrong with the specs. Even when I have no applications open, simply closing and opening windows, lags. Or opening the start menu, or dragging icons across the desktop. sometimes even the cursor lags. So I checked out the resource monitor, and the resources using disk activity are svchost Avast ------- my antivirus, but not much System (PID 4) ------ This is using a huge chunk The total disk activity fluctuates between %50 - %100

In the copying part I would like to ignore one particular sub directory. How can I accomplish that keeping in mind when copying I have to preserve my owner group and time stamp. There is around 700 GB of data that needs to be copied if I do not ignore a particular subdirectory.

• Kindle Fire: PopupMenu$OrientationChangeListener leak

  I have a little popup menu that anchors on a button in the action bar. This works well on 3.0/3.1 Xoom and Galaxy tabs, and a 4.1 Nexus 7. However, on a 7" Fire HD (this one), I get an error about a leaked intent receiver when exiting the application. The error occurs only if the menu was not opened during that run. There is no mention of OrientationChangeListener in the one copy of the source I've found; I suspect Amazon has a different implementation. Questions: Has anyone encountered this? Does anyone know of a workaround or a fix? (Where) can I find Amazon's source code? Finally, (shudder) how important is it that I don't leak a receiver on application exit? • Logging with Resource Monitor?

  I am having sudden spikes in disk read activity, which can tie up my system for a few seconds at a time. I would like to figure out the cause of this before I set my machine to go live. With Performance Monitor I know I can log activity, but this does not show me individual processes that cause a spike. Resource Monitor allows me to see processes, but I have no way to keep logs. It seems unless I have Resource Monitor open at the time of a spike, I will not be able to identify the process causing the spike. Can someone suggest a way to log with Resource Monitor, or an alternative tool that can?

  I am trying to use the android emulator to preview video from webcam. I have used the tom gibara sample code, minus the webbroadcaster (i am instead using VLC streaming via http). So, I have modified the SDK's "CameraPreview" app to use the HttpCamera, but the stream never appears. Debugging through doesn't give me any clues either. I wonder if anything obvious is clear to others? The preview app launches and remains black. • Providing raw MP3/AAC data to Flex/Flash from a custom container

  Having had a quick look at the Flex docs I can't seem to find any reference to providing audio content to be played from a custom (possibly encrypted - don't worry, it's not that evil) container format. Is this possible and if so, could someone point me in the right direction. Or if that's not possible, some way to hook into the disk/network (disk is much more important in this case) I/O of the sound playing mechanism to provide a supported container in memory from a custom wrapper.

  SQL Server 2005: I have a problem with scheduling a Maintenance Plan (MP) with 3 subplans (SP). SP1 is scheduled to run hourly, SP2 daily at 7.00 and SP3 on sundays at 8.00 Reading MP history I see that what happened (I know it seems crazy) is: 11: SP1 runs and executes all the tasks of SP1 SP2 and SP3 12: SP2 runs and does the same 13: SP3 runs and does the same 14: SP1 runs and does the same From the job Activity monitor, SP1 has last run time at 14, SP2 and SP3 are never been executed.   A typical 802.11g access point can provide around 25 Mbps of bandwidth. How is the bandwidth shared among the users? Furthermore, how many users can be served by a single access point using 802.11g in an environment with low interference, and average web activity from the users? The goal is to use bandwidth limitation to avoid starvation for some users in case some of the users start to download a file or stream HD video or some other bandwidth intensive activity. Can someone break down the math on this?
