  In c#, each thread has its own stack space. If this is the case, why is the following code not thread-safe? (It is stated that this code is thread-safe on this post: Locking in C# class Foo { private int count = 0; public void TrySomething() { count++; } } As count is an int (stack variable), surely this value would be isolated to an individual thread, on its own stack, and therefore thread-safe? I am probably missing something here, but I dont understand what is actually in Thread Local Storage if not stack-based variables for the thread?

I've inherited a ColdFusion project where at the top of every page various page-setting specific variables are set, such as: <cfset request.page.title = "Example Page"> <cfset request.page.machineTitle = "example_page"> <cfset request.page.isJQueryEnabled = 1> <cfset request.page.showNavigation = 1> <cfset request.page.SWFObjectVersion = 2.2> I'm thinking about creating a database table with just integer page_id varchar key varchar value I'd reduce the variables at the top of every page to just the page id, and then call the DB for the correct settings. Is this a good idea? I hate reinventing the wheel, but this is a really big project that would require many months for a full content migration to a CMS. What are the current practices for storing page settings? (e.g., what does WordPress do? Drupal? etc.)

  I am returning two lists from the database using LINQ to SQL compiled query. While looping the first list I remove duplicates from the second list as I dont want to process already existing objects again. eg. //oldCustomers is a List returned by my Compiled Linq to SQL Statmenet that I have added a .ToList() at the end to //Same goes for newCustomers for (Customer oC in oldCustomers) { //Do some processing newCustomers.Remove(newCusomters.Find(nC=> nC.CustomerID == oC.CusomterID)); } for (Cusomter nC in newCustomers) { //Do some processing } DataContext.SubmitChanges() I expect this to only save the changes that have been made to the customers in my processing and not Remove or Delete any of my customers from the database.   I would like to set up my codeigniter projects so I can use it in any folder on my webserver. Unfortunately codeigniter requires me to specify the location in several variables of the config. This is a problem for portability. There are 3 places where I see this: 1) $config['base_url'] 2) $config['base_path'] 3) .htaccess RewriteRule So far, I have found the solution to (1) here: http://codeigniter.com/wiki/Automatic_base_url/ I am looking for solutions to (2) and (3), but most importantly (3). Here is an example situation: I set .htaccess to have the RewriteRule as follows: RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /folderA/index.php/$1 [L] Then I go into my repo and check out the project to another folder to make some separate changes. Now I have to update .htaccess to show the following: RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /folderB/index.php/$1 [L] I would like to set it so I dont have to make any config changes when I check out another copy.

  Hi, I overlay an OpenGL application (c++), this openGL application uses SetDeviceGammaRamp to set the brightness of the desktop to very high (dont know why). This application is fullscreen and looks good, but my overlay is very bright. Instead of the orange color with normal brightness, I get yellow because of the high gamma. What I want to do: Get the gamma that is currently set (using GetDeviceGammaRamp), and then use this to adjust the colors I set. Like; glColor4f(r, g, b, a) becomes glColor4f(r / gamma, g / gamma, b / gamma, a); So if the brightness of the desktop is very high, the r g and b values will be lower (darker) and will look like they should. How can I accomplish this? GetDeviceGammaRamp fills a table, how can I use it to modify my colors? Thanks

• Why does adding Crossover to my Genetic Algorithm give me worse results?

  I have implemented a Genetic Algorithm to solve the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). When I use only mutation, I find better solutions than when I add in crossover. I know that normal crossover methods do not work for TSP, so I implemented both the Ordered Crossover and the PMX Crossover methods, and both suffer from bad results. Here are the other parameters I'm using: Mutation: Single Swap Mutation or Inverted Subsequence Mutation (as described by Tiendil here) with mutation rates tested between 1% and 25%. Selection: Roulette Wheel Selection Fitness function: 1 / distance of tour Population size: Tested 100, 200, 500, I also run the GA 5 times so that I have a variety of starting populations. Stop Condition: 2500 generations With the same dataset of 26 points, I usually get results of about 500-600 distance using purely mutation with high mutation rates. When adding crossover my results are usually in the 800 distance range. The other confusing thing is that I have also implemented a very simple Hill-Climbing algorithm to solve the problem and when I run that 1000 times (faster than running the GA 5 times) I get results around 410-450 distance, and I would expect to get better results using a GA. Any ideas as to why my GA performing worse when I add crossover? And why is it performing much worse than a simple Hill-Climb algorithm which should get stuck on local maxima as it has no way of exploring once it finds a local max?

  Hey all, I have written a code in C# - XML which checks whether a value is there or not in a given XML document and prints the value and the particular tag associated with the value. When we enter the Value of the Inner Text it will look for the value in the document and find it. I dont understand what exception to catch when the entered value is not there in the document. • Interface and base class mix, the right way to implement this

  I have some user controls which I want to specify properties and methods for. They inherit from a base class, because they all have properties such as "Foo" and "Bar", and the reason I used a base class is so that I dont have to manually implement all of these properties in each derived class. However, I want to have a method that is only in the derived classes, not in the base class, as the base class doesn't know how to "do" the method, so I am thinking of using an interface for this. If i put it in the base class, I have to define some body to return a value (which would be invalid), and always make sure that the overriding method is not calling the base. method Is the right way to go about this to use both the base class and an interface to expose the method? It seems very round-about, but every way i think about doing it seems wrong... Let me know if the question is not clear, it's probably a dumb question but I want to do this right.

  I ran a security code analyst i found myself having a CA2105 warning. I looked at the grade tampering example. I didnt realize you can assign int[] to a readonly int. I thought readonly was like the C++ const and makes it illegal. The How to Fix Violations suggest i clone the object (which i dont want to do) or 'Replace the array with a strongly typed collection that cannot be changed'. I clicked the link and see 'ArrayList' and adding each element one by one and it doesnt look like you can prevent something adding more.   I use configChanges="locale" on my activities. Without this options in AndroidManifest.xml in 2.x i get flickering screens. It works in all my activities excepting in the preferences screen i add programatically. I have one Preference Activity -- it works after setting configChanges="locale" to the AndroidManifest.xml. Inside of the Preference Activity i add programatically a new preferencescreen. For this new PreferenceScreen i dont have an activity in the AndroidManifest.xml! So i cannot add the configChanges="locale" and the screen flickers on 2.x !! How can i add the attribute configChanges="locale" programatically?

  I am doing some T-SQL programming and I have some Views defines on my database. The data model is still changing these days and I have some table functions defined. Sometimes i deliberately use select * from MYVIEW in such a table function to return all columns. If the view changes (or table) the function crashes and I need to recompile it. I know it is in general good thing so that it prevents from hell lotta errors but still...   Can anyone recommend a good PHP paging class? I have searched google, but have not seen anything that matches my requirements. Rather than "rolling my own" (and almost surely reinventing the wheel), I decided to check in here first. First some background: I am developing a website using Symfony 1.3.2 with Propel ORM on Ubuntu 9.10. I am currently using the Propel pager, which is OK, but I recently started using memcache to speed things up a little. At this point, the Propel pager is of little use, as it (AFAIK), only works with Propel objects. What I need is a class th:t meets the following requirents Has clean interface, with separation of concerns, so that the logic to retrieve records from the datasource (e.g. database) is encapsulated in a class (or at least a separate file). Can work with arrays of objects Provides pagination links, and only fetches the data required for the current page. Also, the pagination should 'split' the available page links if there are too many. For example, if there are potentially 1000 possible page links, the pages displayed should be something like FIRST 2,3 ....999 LAST Can return the number of all the records in the table being queried, so that the following links are available FIRST, LAST (this requirement is actually already covered in the previous requirement - but I just wanted to re-emphasise it). Can anyone recommend such a library, if they have used it succesfully in the past? Alternatively, someobe may have 'hacked' (e.g. derived from) the current Propel pager, to get it to do the things I listed about - please let me know.
