    Lets say I have Spring Framework App that is running on Tomcat and uses MySQL database: What would be the best solution in this instance that would allow for sociability (price/performance/integration time)? More precisely: What would be on the Web Load balancer box, and who should be the tomcat web server clustered? What would be on the Database Load balancer box and how should be the database servers clustered? And if at all possible specific technical integration links would be of great help.

  • DNS server redirect users on first visit

    I am looking for a DNS level solution, that redirects a user to a specific IP on the first visit, than directs them to the correct IP on subsequent visits. So the idea is, for example, if a user visits "malicioussite.com", the first time they try to resolve that DNS name, it resolves to the IP of an internal web server, showing them a warning. On subsequent resolves, the users would get the actual IP, so they can visit the site. How can this be achieved? I am really flexible on what I can use, as long as its on the DNS level.

  • Windows 8.1 Search does not automatically select first search match

    When I search in Windows 8/8.1 (start menu-start typing), it doesn't automatically highlight the search term. For example, if I'm trying to open the "Internet Options" panel and type the entire thing out in search, I have to down arrow or tab to the "Internet Options" search result. This is retarded. I'm used to Windows 7 style search where the first match is highlighted and i can easily just hit return. First match highlighting does work for other built-in things like "Control Panel", but it should work for all things in general, as it did in Windows 7 search. Anyways, if there is an option to enable this in Windows 8/8.1, I'd appreciate the tip. Thanks!

  • Choosing my first Domain Registrar?

    This will be the first domain i've ever registered. So i'm at a loss what to look for. I definitely don't want to go with GoDaddy. Here are my requirements: Must have unlimited email forwards for my domain Easy to transfer away if i choose. Must not be one of those shady registrars that will try to auction your domain at the end. Ability to create sub domains Domain Registration is Private I would like a domain registrar that would let me use my dynamic ip of my ISP (Cable) if i want to. So hopefully they would have some type program that would detect IP changes and update accordingly So i've looked at a variety of registrars so far. The three left were really NameCheap, DreamHost, & DomainMonster. I have heard good things about DreamHost but i think its off the list because they don't give you any information about the features you get when you register your domain with them. They have a "Whats included" button the page but it mainly list the features with hosting not registration. DomainMonster looks pretty cool but i don't see anything about subdomains. Also i would assume they don't have a system for dynamic ip address updating. So you would have to constantly check that your ip of your ISP has changed or not and update it manually. NameCheap also looks nice. There are two things i really like about them. Right on their feature page they list "Free Dynamic DNS With Client" which is pretty cool. They also have a free SSL certificate for the first year. Haven't messed a lot with certificates but this would definitely be something i would use. Only minus i can see is you only get free private whois for the first year. After that its $2.99 which isn't that big of a deal. I'm leaning towards NameCheap now. Is this a good choice. Is there anything else i should be looking at?

  • Writing my first bash script (line 2: testscript: No such file or directory)

    I am attempting to write my first shell script (I'm running Ubuntu 10.x) This is what my 'script' looks like cd /path/to/directory/cronscripts . testscript I put the following debug statements (after the cd), in the script above to make sure everything was ok: pwd echo `ls -lhrt` and it displayed all the files in the directory. So I dont understand the error message I am getting. I have the following two questions Why am I getting the above error message and how do I fix it? My script seems to run fine without a shebang in the first line - infact when I try either of the following: #!/usr/bin/bash #!/usr/bin/bash env I get the following error message: /usr/bin/bash: bad interpreter: No such file or directory What is the purpose of the shebang statement and why do I get the above error when I try to include it in my script/ how do I fix it, so I can add the shebang (is it necessary? - it seems most script examples have the shebang - but I'm not sure if it is a must, as the script runs without it).

  • why is iometer performance slower after first run?

    I'm doing some benchmarking with IOMeter, and I'm seeing a consistent and susbtantial drop-off in performance after running the first test. These drop-offs are about the same on the three systems I've tested on, which makes me think it's a configuration setting, or just a fact of life about using IOMeter. For example, one system (local RAID 10) went from 388 I/Os per second the first run, to about 211 I/Os per second on every run after that. Everything else about the test was identical, and I also bounced the machine in between runs. So, is this expected behavior, or am I missing something?

  • First time setting up a MySQL database.

    In trying to learn how to work with the LAMP stack, I've hit a wall with MySQL. I can't seem to find a good reference for the first time setup of MySQL to be used with Apache and python. So, my question is four-fold: 1) Under what circumstances should I create my first database. That is, what user do I use (Apache's http user? root?) 2)How do permissions work? 3) Do I have to do anything on the MySQL side to make MySQL talk to Apache, or MySQL to talk to Python/Django? 4) Is there a good resource online that describes setting all of this up? I've found a bunch for using a database once it's in place, but none for the initial setup? Notes: I'm trying to run my LAMP stack on a dedicated little box for testing/learning purposes only, so I don't have access to any DBA that could help me, as much as I'd like one.

  • First request too slow even if I have a load balancer in the back

    I have an Apache 2 on Centos + bind with a wordpress website on it (e.g example.com). I have also set up, on another server in a different contry a load balancer (varnish:80 + nginx 127.0.0.1:8080) for it - which task is to server all static content under /wp-content/. Using Simple DNS editor I added an A entry to cdn.example.com pointing to the server's IP. So no extra work from a 2nd dns server. Then using htaccess I redirect all requests to jpg|gif|css|js files to cdn.example.com. That works and all files are saved on the "cdn" server and served right away. My problem is that for the first time I enter on example.com (e.g after restarting the computer or closing the browser) the load time is 1 up to 3 seconds, while any subsequent page loads take only 300 to 600 miliseconds. I know it might be a DNS issue, but I have done a cache check on several websites and cdn.example.com indicates the right IP. Do you have any ideas where I should dig to solve this first-time slowness?

  • Extract first page from multiple pdfs

    Have got about 500 PDFs to go through and extract the first page of. They then need to go through some time consuming conversion process so was hoping to try and save some time by have a batch process to extract just the first page from the 500 pdfs and place it in a new pdf. Have had a poke around Acrobat but can find no real method of doing this for multiple files. Does anyone know any other programs or methods that this could be achieved? Free and open source are obviously more favourable :) EDIT: Have actually had some success using GhostScript to extract just one page. Am now looking at how to batch that and take the list of files and use those.

  • Creating different margins on the first page of a word template

    I have a letterhead template and I need the first page left margin to be larger than subsequent pages. I've seen the option of placing a text box or image box in the header to push the text but this ends up throwing off the tabs and bullet list indentation markers. I thought of setting up the first page using two columns and pushing the text to start on the second column but I can't seem to find a way to get the text to switch back to 1 column on the second page when it is created from text overflowing. Does anyone know how something like this is possible? Thanks in advance, Paul

  • Trouble getting PHP, Apache, and Zend talking to eachother (localhost)

    Hi guys, I've searched through several other questions, but haven't found my solution. THe main reason is that I'm not even sure if I have all these things properly installed. I have a hosting account, and have always just deployed everything into the internets, but I'm finally trying to figure out how to get my desktop set up right for learning Zend Framework. I have Apache Server 2.2, PHP, And Zend Framework installed. I'm trying to do this tutorial: http://akrabat.com/wp-content/uploads/Getting-Started-with-Zend-Framework.pdf The problem is when I click on the link: http://localhost/zf-tutorial/public I get an Error 404. If I type in http://www.localhost I get "It Works!" in the browser. I'm thinking this means I have Apache installed correctly, but am not pointing correctly to the Zend tutorial? Thanks for any help!

    Imagine I have an input file like this: INSERT INTO video_item_theme VALUES('9', '29'); INSERT INTO video_item_theme VALUES('19', '312'); INSERT INTO video_item_theme VALUES('414', '1'); And I wish to add 10000 to only the first range of numbers, so I end up with something like this: INSERT INTO video_item_theme VALUES('10009', '29'); INSERT INTO video_item_theme VALUES('10019', '312'); INSERT INTO video_item_theme VALUES('10414', '1'); My approach would be to prefix "1000" to one digit numbers, "100" Something like...: sed 's/[0-9]\{2\}/10&/g' ... isn't very helpful, since it changes each occurance of two numbers, not only in the first occurance of numbers: INSERT INTO video_item_theme VALUES('9', '10029'); INSERT INTO video_item_theme VALUES('10019', '100312'); INSERT INTO video_item_theme VALUES('100414', '1');

  • Can't copy paste on the first try

    When I try to copy and paste something from firefox to say notepad or word, it doesn't work on the first try. That is I go to firefox, select text, right click, select copy, then switch to notepad, right click, select paste, but it pastes not the thing which I copied just now, but whatever was in the clipboard before I copied. If after this I go back to firefox and copy that text again, and then go back to notepad, then it will paste correctly. So in order to copy paste something it takes me 2 tries. This doesn't always happen this way, but only sometimes. So sometimes I can paste on first try, but sometimes it takes me two tries. I am using firefox 7.0.1 and windows 7. Also it is not only with firefox, sometimes the same thing happens when I copy paste from other programs. What could be the reason, and how can I fix this?

    I would like to automate code-first database generation during the automated CI build of a web project in Team Foundation Server 2010. When run locally the tests create a code-first database specified by the connection string in the app.config of the tests project. How do I configure the TFS Build Configuration to mimic this behaviour on the TFS build server? Edit The problem, it turns out, was that the TFS build server was successfully running the test which was using the default connection string in the app.config which pointed to the local SQL Server, not where I expected it. The solution was to use SlowCheetah on the TFS server as a means to transform the App.config file using the QA transform as per this blog article.

  • Visual Studio compiles WPF application twice during build

    I have a WPF app in VS2008 that compiles twice during the build. The two CSC command lines are similar but with some differences. The first CSC command line does not have an /resource options, the second has two /resource options on the command line.     Every weekend brings creative ideas and accidents brings best unknown secrets in front of us. Just a day while working with complex SQL Server code in SSMS I came across very interesting shortcut which I have never used before and instantly fell in love with it. It is totally possible that you are familiar with this but for me it was the first time and I was surprised that I did know know this short cut so far. Shortcut key is CTRL+SHIFT+]. This key can be very useful when dealing with multiple subqueries, CTE or query with multiple parentheses. When exercised this shortcut key it selects T-SQL code between two parentheses. Let us see the examples to understand the same. In each of the examples I have put the cursor at the position displayed and pressed CTRL+SHIFT+] and it has selected the code between two corresponding parentheses. Cursor position 1 Cursor position 2 Cursor position 3 If you are a developer and have to code with complex queries, you will totally appreciate that this feature can save so much of the time for development. I often remember my experience as a developer when I have lost a lot of hours to just balance parentheses. As I said yesterday I found this shortcut accidently.   • ASP.NET Connections Fall 2011 Slides and Code

    Thanks everyone who came to my talks at ASP.NET Connections in Las Vegas!  There was a definite theme to my talks this year…taking advantage of JavaScript to build a rich presentation layer. I gave the following three talks: JsRender Templates – Originally, I was scheduled to give a talk on jQuery Templates.  However, jQuery Templates has been deprecated and JsRender is the new technology which replaces jQuery Templates. In the talk, I give plenty of code samples of using JsRender.  You can download the slides and code samples RIGHT HERE   HTML5 – In this talk, I focused on the features of HTML5 which are the most interesting to developers building database-driven Web applications. In particular, I discussed Web Sockets,  Web workers, Web Storage, Indexed DB, and the Offline Application Cache. All of these features are supported by Safari, Chrome, and Firefox today and they will be supported by Internet Explorer 10. In this talk, I discuss all of the bug fixes and new features which the developers on the Superexpert team have added to the Ajax Control Toolkit over the previous six months.   • Is functional intellisense and code browsing more beneficial than the use of dependency injection containers

    This question is really based on PHP, but could be valid for other dynamically typed, interpreted languages and specifically the methods of generating code insight and object browsing in development environments. We use PHPStorm, and find intellisense invaluable, but it is provided by some limited static analysis and parsing of doc comments. Obviously this does not lend well to obtaining dependencies through a container, as the IDE has no idea of the type returned, so the developer loses out on a plethora of (in the case of our framework anyway) rich documentation provided through the doc comments. So we start to see stuff like this: $widget = $dic->YieldInstance('WidgetA', $arg1, $arg2, $arg3, $arg4...)); /** * @var $widget WidgetA */ So that code insight works. In effect the comments are tightly bound, but worse they come out of sync when code is modified but not the comments: $widget = $dic->YieldInstance('WidgetB', $arg1, $arg2, $arg3, $arg4...)); /** * @var $widget WidgetA */ Obviously the comment could be improved by referencing a Widget interface, but then we might as well use a factory and avoid the requirement for the extra typing hints in the comments, and dic complexity / boiler plating. Which is more important to the average developer, code insight / intellisense or 'nirvana' decouplement?

    In this post, I will show you how to use external xml file with PowerShell. The advantage for doing so is that you can avoid other people to open up your PowerShell code to make the configuration changes; instead all they need to do is to change the xml file. I will refactor my site creation script as an example; you can download the script here and refactored code here. 1. As you can see below, I hard code all the variables in the script itself. $url = "http://ybbest" $WebsiteName = "Ybbest" $WebsiteDesc = "Ybbest test site" $Template = "STS#0" $PrimaryLogin = "contoso\administrator" $PrimaryDisplay = "administrator" $PrimaryEmail = "[email protected]" $MembersGroup = "$WebsiteName Members" $ViewersGroup = "$WebsiteName Viewers" 2. Next, I will show you how to manipulate xml file using PowerShell. You can use the get-content to grab the content of the file. [xml] $xmlconfigurations=get-content .\SiteCollection.xml 3.
