• SQL Server: Granting db_datawriter on all databases

  I want to manage permissions and access to a SQL Server database server on a development machine. I've created a local windows group (called DBReaderGroup) and assigned various people to it. The group was created as a SQL Server login successfully: create login [MYMACHINE\DBReaderGroup] from windows My goal is to grant this group read/write access to all databases (which are constantly being added and dropped). Is it possible to configure the right settings so that SQL Server manages this? My biggest challenge is that each time a db is created, I have to update the "User Mapping" settings for this group on the new database. Am I missing something simple?

• showSettings callback in Flex?

  I am pretty new to flex, so forgive me if this is an obvious question. Is there a way to open the Security.showSettings (flash.system.Security) with a callback? or at least to detect if it is currently open or not? My flex application is used for streaming audio, and is normally controlled by javascript, so I keep it hidden for normal use (via absolute positioning it off the page). When I need microphone access I need to make the flash settings dialog visible, which works fine, I move it into view and open the dialog. When the user closes it, I need to move it back off the screen so they don't see an empty flex app sitting there after they change their settings. thanks :)

• How to disable hiddev96 in linux (or tell it to ignore a specific device)

  I'm having problems with a CentOS 5.0 system when using a certain USB device. The problem is that the device advertises itself as a HID device and linux is happy to try to provide support for it: In /ver/log/messages I see a line that reads: hiddev96: USB HID 1.11 Device [KXX USB PRO] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1 My question comes down to: Is there a way to tell linux to not use hiddev96 for that device in particular? If yes, how? If not, what are my options - can I turn hiddev96 off completely? UPDATE I should probably have been a bit more specific about what is going on. The machine is running Centos 5.0, and on top of it I'm running VMWare workstation with Windows XP - which is where the USB device is actually supposed to operate. All works fine for other USB devices (i.e. VMWare successfully connects the USB device to the guest OS and the OS can use it, but for this particular device VMWare connects it to the guest OS, but the OS can't read/write to it) Every attempt locks up the application that is trying to communicate with the device. I've reason to believe that it is because the device is a HID device and there's some contention between the Linux host and the Windows guest OS in accessing the device. • IPhone UIView:Is it possible to enable userinteraction only on subviews?

  Hi guys, I created a viewcontroller that displays a button which is used to slide a view onto the screen. The idea is to place for instance three such viewcontrollers onscreen, resulting in three buttons at the bottom of the screen providing navigation. The viewcontrollers get stacked, so to the top one is now overlaying the other views and therefore the other buttons. Only the top viewcontroller's button is working in this situation, where I would like all three of them to be clickable. I tried disabling userinteraction on the view and enabling it on the buttons only, but it looks like the superview settings overrule the subview settings. Any ideas?

  Where can I find some good pointers on best practices for running ASP.NET MVC on IIS6? I haven't seen any realistic options for web-hosts who provide IIS7-hosting yet. Mostly because I don't live in the U.S. So I was wondering on how you best build applications in ASP.NET MVC and make it easily available to deploy on both IIS6 and IIS7. Keep in mind that this is for standard web-hosts, so there is no access to ISAPI-filters or special settings inside IIS6. Are there anything else one should think about when developing ASP.NET MVC-applications to target IIS6? Any functions that doesn't work? UPDATE: One of the bigger issues is the thing with routes. The pattern {controller}/{action} will work on IIS7, but not IIS6 which needs {controller}.mvc/{action}. So how do I make this transparent? Again, no ISAPI and no IIS-settings, please.

But When trying to run this ActiveX control from the browser in client machine (using Wshell), It was not getting invoked since "Run Activex Controls and Pluggins" are disabled in my browser. So I changed the browser settings to enable mode and Then the Activex control gave me the expected output. • XML Validation in ASP.NET MVC during load

  I'm writing an ASP.NET MVC 2 application where one of the backing stores I plan to support is XML. I have a POCO that represents the settings for the site, along with an XML file to contain these settings. My question is what is the best way to validate this data as it is read from disk in to the POCO? I know I can use an XSD, or maybe use the Data Annotations library to mark up the POCO, and use reflection to validate the data, but is there another way, perhaps in .NET 3.5 or MVC to do this? I've spent some time Googling this issue, and want to be sure I'm doing it in the best manner. Thanks in advance!

  I am trying to come up with a testing methodology for our django-celery project. I have read the notes in the documentation, but it didn't give me a good idea of what to actually do. I am not worried about testing the tasks in the actual daemons, just the functionality of my code. Mainly I am wondering: How can we bypass task.delay() during the test (I tried setting CELERY_ALWAYS_EAGER = True but it made no difference)? How do we use the test settings that are recommended (if that is the best way) without actually changing our settings.py? Can we still use manage.py test or do we have to use a custom runner? Overall any hints or tips for testing with celery would be very helpful.

  I recently installed a new copy of Ubuntu 9.10 (Kernel 2.6.31-14) on to my Hp Pavilion dv6t, so I can setup a Linux development environment. The install went flawlessly and I proceeded with Ubuntu's udate manager's long list of updates (292 in all). I also setup a swap file and activated a Nvidia 185 driver for the Nvidia 260m GPU on the machine. After all this was done I restarted the computer and booted into Ubuntu this time with a newer 2.6.31-19 Kernel which was installed from the update manager. • Why doesn't Maven's mvn clean ever work the first time?

  Nine times out of ten when I run mvn clean on my projects I experience a build error. I have to execute mvn clean multiple times until the build error goes away. Does anyone else experience this? Is there any way to fix this within Maven? If not, how do you get around it? I wrote a bat file that deletes the target folders and that works well, but it's not practical when you are working on multiple projects. I am using Maven 2.2.1. • Referencing Environment Variables in web.xml

  I'm pre-packaging a JSP web-app that relies on some file path settings found within web.xml. These settings are unknown at packaging time, because they reference a path the customer will set when deploying the entire application (of which the web-app is a management interface). It seems that the easiest way to avoid tokens and file modifications in my installer script, is to ask the user for an install location, set this location as an environment variable (e.g JAVA_HOME), and have web.xml always reference that variable. Is there a way to reference an environment variable value from within web.xml? Google searches lead to the J2EE method of SETTING environment variables from ejb xml files. • MVC DateTime binding with incorrect date format

  Asp.net-MVC now allows for implicit binding of DateTime objects. I have an action along the lines of public ActionResult DoSomething(DateTime startDate) { ... } This successfully converts a string from an ajax call into a DateTime. However, we use the date format dd/MM/yyyy; MVC is converting to MM/dd/yyyy. For example, submitting a call to the action with a string '09/02/2009' results in a DateTime of '02/09/2009 00:00:00', or September 2nd in our local settings. I don't want to roll my own model binder for the sake of a date format. But it seems needless to have to change the action to accept a string and then use DateTime.Parse if MVC is capable of doing this for me. Is there any way to alter the date format used in the default model binder for DateTime? Shouldn't the default model binder use your localisation settings anyway?

• Supplying a callback to Jeditable

  Summary: When I try supplying a onsubmit or onreset callback to Jeditable, I get Object [function] has no method 'apply' errors. How I got here: I've been working on a rails plugin to supply Jeditable and jWYSIWYG for in-place WYSIWYG editing. Development is driven by a Rails project I'm working on which asks for specific functions. One of the options I added was the ability to trigger Jeditable's edit mode using a button instead of clicking on the editable text itself, following the pattern suggested in this answer. The next step, though, is to hide the button while in edit mode, and reveal it again when leaving edit mode. The hide is easy enough; I just added a line to the triggering function which sends .toggle() to the button. Reveal is trickier. I figure I need to .toggle() again on submit or cancel, and helpfully, Jeditable offers onsubmit and onreset callbacks. However, when I try using those callbacks, I get this Object [something] has no method 'apply' errors. What I'm trying: Because this is in the context of a Rails helper, the actual mechanics are a little more involved than this, but the upshot is that I'm trying to follow this pattern, handing Jeditable this in the args: "onsubmit":"showTrigger", and then including this script: function showTrigger(settings, original) { $(".edit_trigger[id='element_id']").toggle(); } However, on submitting changes or canceling an edit, I get the error Object showTrigger has no method 'apply' ...as described above. I also tried sending in a function directly as the "onsubmit" argument (i.e. "onsubmit": "function(settings, original){$(\".edit_trigger[id='element_id']\").toggle();}" and then I just get Object function(settings, original){$(\".edit_trigger[id='element_id']\").toggle();} has no method 'apply' instead. There must be something wrong with how I'm handing in this callback. Any ideas? ETA: This answer suggests to me that somehow I'm providing a string to Jeditable when it expects a function instead. However, because I'm working within the context of a Rails helper, I'm not at all sure how to fix that - the "showTrigger" bit is set as a Ruby variable in the helper, and although window.showTrigger() is defined when the window is loaded, I don't know how to designate that function within a Ruby variable such that it will be recognized as a function at page load time.

• Push notifications work for Ad Hoc, but not when downloaded from the Apple store.

  My app just got approved for the apple store. I downloaded it an installed it on my iPhone - but it looks like push notifications are broken! I was successfully testing push notifications in production using an adHoc provisioning profile. I had no problems. The only thing I did differently when I submitted to apple was using an app store distribution profile. The application never asks me (or anyone else who has downloaded it) if I want to receive push notifications. Consequently, the phone never talks to my server to send the push token (because application:didRegisterForRemoteNotificationsWithDeviceToken: is presumably never called). Also the application does not appear in the settings app under the notification settings. What could I be doing wrong??

• Set maven to use archiva repositories WITHOUT using activeByDefault?

  I am very close to finally having a working setup with archiva and maven. The last thing that's really boggling me, is how to set up my internal and snapshot repositories - without using a profile which contains activeByDefault set to true. I am using a SUPER super pom - a company-wide pom which contains distributionManagement information for releases. I was thinking that I could specify the repositories in this pom, and configure the authentication settings in settings.xml? Can I use repositories tag without a profile? There should be no "profile" for my internal and snapshot repositories, as they will never change... What I'm trying to steer clear from, is using a "default" profile, which is active all the time. I hear activeByDefault is NOT a best practice and I don't intend to use it. With that said, how should I go about doing this? My internal repo is a mirror of the maven central repo, so I would like to lock down my developers to ONLY use our internal artifact server. Remember - I do NOT want a profile with activeByDefault set to true. I cannot stress this enough! Should I use Maven mirrors? Should I "add" additional repositories? If I take the repositories tag instead of the mirrors tag, will maven force builds to use ONLY my archiva settings, instead of the default maven central? Or is what I seek to accomplish able to be done using only the mirrors tag in maven? I know how to configure repo credentials when using repositories tag, but not with mirrors. How is this done? Is providing credentials for anything in mirrors tags the same as for anything in repositories tags? Am I missing something obvious? I've had it up to here with getting things up and running using maven. I know it will be worthwhile in the end, but it is surely causing me a ton of aggravation and resources seem to be sparse. Either that, or people are content using it however they please without regard to best-practices. Thank you

But I have problems to run unittest under pydev. I guess it's something related to run configurations of pydev, so I made several trials, but with no success. Once I got messages like this: ImportError: Could not import settings 'D:\django_projects\MyProject' (Is it on sys.path? Does it have syntax errors?): No module named D:\django_projects\MyProject ERROR: Module: MyUnittestFile could not be imported. Another time I got messages like this: ImportError: Could not import settings 'MyProject.settngs' (Is it on sys.path? Does it have syntax errors?): No module named settngs 'ERROR: Module: MyUnittestFile could not be imported. I use pydev 1.5.6 on eclipse and windows xp. Any ideas for this problem?

• cu3er background issue

  I'm using a set of PNGs to run my cu3er slides. They keep the transparency, until the transition and then they're boxed with a white background. • can't jQuery 3d party dialog to do what i want :)

  i'm using NyroModal, a 3rd party jQuery based dialog script. According to these settings, I should be able to do this: $.nyroModalManual({ type : 'ajax', url : '/url', 'ajax' : { url : '/url', data : 'somedata=1' } }); However I receive an error "$.ajax() is not defined". How could this be? p.s. If I run console.debug($.ajax()) right before the nyroModalManual part, it shows the XMLHTTPObject nicely, so I'm probably doing something wrong in the settings... I just need to be able to pass data.

• .NET SettingsProvider/ApplicationSettingsBase caching

  I'm looking at some code that uses the .NET System.Configuration.SettingsProvider and ApplicationSettingsBase to handle configuration. We have a class that derives from SettingsProvider that uses a database as the data store, and then we have other settings classes that inherit from ApplicationSettingsBase, and have the [SettingsProvider(typeof(MySettingsProvider))] attribute. The problem is that we're using these settings classes in multiple applications, but they seem to permanently cache the configuration values, the first time they are loaded. The issue is that if a setting is changed in one application, the other applications will not get the setting until the next restart, because they are cached everywhere. My question is: is there a way to force the SettingsProvider implementation, or the classes derived from ApplicationSettingsBase to not cache values, and re-query the datastore every time the setting is accessed? A valid answer might be that these classes were not intended to be used in multi-application environments...
