  I have a method that I am trying to unit test. This method takes a parameter as an ArrayList and does things with it. The mock I am trying to define is: ArrayList<String> mocked = mock(ArrayList.class); which gives a [unchecked] unchecked conversion" warning. ArrayList<String> mocked = mock(ArrayList<String>.class); gives me an error. Anyone care to enlighten me as to what I am doing wrong?

• Entity Framework in layered architecture

  I am using a layered architecture with the Entity Framework. Here's What I came up with till now (All the projects Except UI are class library): Entities: The POCO Entities. Completely persistence ignorant. No Reference to other projects. Generated by Microsoft's ADO.Net POCO Entity Generator. DAL: The EDMX (Entity Model) file with the context class. (t4 generated). References: Entities BLL: Business Logic Layer. Will implement repository pattern on this layer. References: Entities, DAL. This is where the objectcontext gets populated: var ctx=new DAL.MyDBEntities(); UI: The presentation layer: ASP.NET website. References: Entities, BLL + a connection string entry to entities in the config file (question #2). Now my three questions: Is my layer discintion approach correct? In my UI, I access BLL as follows: var customerRep = new BLL.CustomerRepository(); var Customer = customerRep.GetByID(myCustomerID); The problem is that I have to define the entities connection string in my UI's web.config/app.config otherwise I get a runtime exception. IS defining the entities connectionstring in UI spoils the layers' distinction? Or is it accesptible in a muli layered architecture. Should I take any additional steps to perform chage tracking, lazy loading, etc (by etc I mean the features that Entity Framework covers in a conventional, 1 project, non POCO code generation)?   I am a fan of Martin Fowler's (deprecated) model-view-presenter pattern. I am writing a Scala view class containing several button classes. I would like to include methods to set the action properties of the buttons, to be called by the presenter. A typical code fragment looks like this: private val aButton = new JButton def setAButtonAction(action: Action): Unit = { aButton.setAction(action) } This code is repeated for each button. If Java/Scala had the C preprocessor, I would create a macro to generate this code, given the button name (no lectures on the evils of the C preprocessor, please). This code is obviously very verbose and repetitive. Is there any better way way to do this in Scala, perhaps using traits? Please hold the lectures about scala.swing. I looking for a general pattern here.

• Java EE Website Planning Questions

  I'm a .NET programming who is soon moving to the Java EE world. I have plenty of experience with .NET web technologies, web services, WebForms and MVC. I am also very familiar with the Java language, and have written a few servlets and modified a couple of JSP pages, but I haven't touched EE yet. I'd like to set up a public website using Java EE so I can familiarize myself with whats current. I'm thinking just a technology playground at this point with no particular purpose in mind. What Java technologies are the current hotness for this sort of thing? (For example, if someone asked me what I'd recommend learning to set up a new .NET site, I'd say use ASP MVC instead of WebForms and recommend LINQ-to-SQL as a quick, simple and widely used ORM.) So, what I'd like to know is: Is there a recommended technology for the presentation layer? Is JSP considered a good approach, or is there anything cleaner/newer/more widespread? Is Hibernate still widely used for persistence? Is it obsolete? Is there anything better out there? (I've worked with NHibernate some, so I wouldn't be starting from scratch.) Is cheap Java EE web hosting available? What should I know being a .NET web developer moving to the Java world?

  My application contains a set of model classes. e.g. Person, Department... The user changes values for instances of these classes in the UI and the classes are persisted to my "project" file. Next time the user can open and edit the project. Next version of my product may change the model classes drastically. It will still need to open existing projects files (I will know how to handle missing data). How is it best to persist my model classes to the project file? The easiest way to persist classes is Data contract serialization. However it will fail on breaking changes (I expect to have such). How to handle this? use some other persistence, e.g. name-value collection or db which is more tolerance ship a "project converter" application to migrate old projects. This requires to either ship with both old and new models or to manipulate xml, which is best?

• Maven: Multiple class with the same path implemented in different jar

  I'm running into trouble with having multiple class with the same path (i.e. same name, same package!!!). For some reason, gwt-dev comes with its own version of org.apache.xerces.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl and javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory. At the same time, spring also depends on these classes but from different jar. I don't know what should be, but look like xalan & xml-api are the two dependencies that spring depends on (these dependency are optional) Funny thing is that eclipse can run the same code (it's a unit test) without problem, but surefire cannot. So I guess the problem is due to the way each runner consider the priority of each jar. Now come to the question: How can I setup my POM so that I can sure that when ever any code running inside my app, then class from a jar will be selected over class from other jar? Thanks.

• Google app engine: Poor Performance with JDO + Datastore

  I have a simple data model that includes USERS: store basic information (key, name, phone # etc) RELATIONS: describe, e.g. a friendship between two users (supplying a relationship_type + two user keys) I'm getting very poor performance, for instance, if I try to print the first names of all of a user's friends. Say the user has 500 friends: I can fetch the list of friend user_ids very easily in a single query. But then, to pull out first names, I have to do 500 back-and-forth trips to the Datastore, each of which seems to take on the order of 30 ms. If this were SQL, I'd just do a JOIN and get the answer out fast. I understand there are rudimentary facilities for performing joins across un-owned relations in a relaxed implementation of JDO (as described at http://gae-java-persistence.blogspot.com) but they sound experimental and non-standard (e.g. my code won't work in any other JDO implementation). Is this really my best bet? Otherwise, how do people extract satisfactory performance from JDO/Datastore in this kind of (very common) situation? -Bosh

  We're using Hudson on Windows to build a .NET solution and run the unit tests (NUnit). Hudson is thereby used to start batch files that do the actual work. I am now trying to set up a new test that is to run on a build slave and will run very long. The test should use the binaries produced by the upstream build. I have searched the Hudson documentation but I cannot find how to pass upstream build artifacts to downstream slaves. How do I do this?

• Spring can't find a lib and webapp doesn't start up in tomcat 6

  I've this problem using STS: I'm building a simple Spring app, just to try out features like MVC and persistence. Now I've created something very simple, out of a bunch of tutorials for Spring 3, that I'm using. The application fails with this, during server startup: Code: org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'org.springframework.web.servlet.mvc.annotation.DefaultAnnotationHandlerMapping#0': Initialization of bean failed; nested exception is org.springframework.beans.factory.CannotLoadBeanClassException: Cannot find class [org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.annotation.AnnotationSessionFactoryBean] for bean with name 'mySessionFactory' defined in ServletContext resource [/WEB-INF/spring/appServlet/servlet-context.xml]; nested exception is java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.annotation.AnnotationSessionFactoryBean but I've org.springframework.orm in web-inf/classes folder (I even tried putting it in web-inf/lib). As I copied these libs there, the came out in Web App Libraries folder. Building this project in STS works fine as this dependency is set up in build path throught project properties, but how do I transfer the libs to the web app? (I'm using Tomcat 6 as it is the server I'm going to use sometime in the future for production). Is this a config problem of my XML? Or am I just missing the right way to put this lib? (I encountered the same problem before, but adding the needed lib in classes worked it out).   Does anyone have a clue why those two lines would cause that linker error? std::ifstream ifs("filename.file"); boost::archive::binary_iarchive iarchv( ifs ); Error 8 fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'F:\dev\project\build\win32-unit\tests\Debug\framework_core_tests.lib' ramework_core_tests framework_core_tests The same happens with any Boost::Archive type. Its trying to link against a library of the same name as my executable for some reason when that project doesn't nor never existed and is not defined as a library to link against in my project files.

• Is there a recommended command for "hg bisect --command"?

  I have an emergent bug that I've got to track down tomorrow. I know a previous hg revision which was good so I'm thinking about using hg bisect. However, I'm on Windows and don't want to get into DOS scripting. Ideally, I'd be able to write a Python unit test and have hg bisect use that. For some reason I still get the YSOD, and I don't understand why the object collection is not already populated. But I want to use a free driver to do my work. The purpose of my job is to transfer daily (weekly) an Oracle 11g database with data from an existing database MS ACCESS 2007. And I thought to use a procedure (Hibernate EJB) Java to be launched automatically every week to do the data transfer. Is this is the best solution ? Configuration : sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver v???   I'm looking for an example of how to split-out comma-delimited data in a field of one table, and fill in a second table with those individual elements, in order to make a one-to-many relational database schema. • Is the REST support in Spring 3's MVC Framework production quality yet?

  Hi all, Since Spring 3 was released in December last year, I have been trying out the new REST features in the MVC framework for a small commercial project involving implementing a few RESTful Web Services which consume XML and return XML views using JiBX. I plan to use either Hibernate or JDBC Templates for the data persistence. As a Spring 2.0 developer, I have found Spring 3's (and 2.5's) new annotations way of doing things quite a paradigm shift and have personally found some of the new MVC annotation features difficult to get up to speed with for non-trivial applications - as such, I am often having to dig for information in forums and blogs that is not apparent from going through the reference guide or from the various Spring 3 REST examples on the web. For deadline-driven production quality and mission critical applications implementing a RESTful architecture, should I be holding off from Spring 3 and rather be using mature JSR 311 (JAX-RS) compliant frameworks like RESTlet or Jersey for the REST layer of my code (together with Spring 2 / 2.5 to tie things together)? I had no problems using RESTlet 1.x in a previous project and it was quite easy to get up to speed with (no magic tricks behind the scenes), but when starting my current project it initially looked like the new REST stuff in Spring 3's MVC Framework would make life easier. Do any of you out there have any advice to give on this? Does anyone know of any commercial / production-quality projects using, or having successfully delivered with, the new REST stuff in Spring 3's MVC Framework. Many thanks Glen

• How to increase PermGen memory for eclipselink StaticWeaveAntTask

  We are using Eclipselink and need to weave the code in order for lazy fetching to work property. During the weave process I'm getting the following error: weave: BUILD FAILED java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space I have the following tasks within my ant build file: <target name="define_weave_task" description="task definition for EclipseLink static weaving"> <taskdef name="eclipse_weave" classname="org.eclipse.persistence.tools.weaving.jpa.StaticWeaveAntTask"/> </target> <target name="weave" depends="compile,define_weave_task" description="weave eclipselink code into compiled classes"> <eclipse_weave source="${path.classes}" target="${path.classes}"> <classpath refid="compile.classpath"/> </eclipse_weave> </target> It has been working great for a long time. Now that the amount of code to be woven has increased I'm getting the PermGen error. I would like to be able to up the amount of perm space. If I was doing a compile I would be able to up the perm space via a compiler argument such as <compilerarg value="-XX:MaxPermSize=256M"/> but this does not appear to be a valid argument for eclipselink weaving. How can I up the perm space for the weave?

• Messages not forwarded to error queue when exception is thrown in handler (it works on my machine)

  e are using NServicebus 4.0.5 with sql server(sql server 2012) as transport. When the handler throws an exception, NSB does not retry or move the message to the error queue. Successful messages make it to the audit queue but the failed/errored ones don't! . Interestingly, all this works on our local machines(windows 7 ,sql server localdb) but not on windows server 2012 (sql server 2012). • Is there anyway to bring web @Context into JUnit (CXF+Spring)

  I am trying to create unit test environment to test RESTFul services (cfx+spring) in my dev environemnt. To test RESTFul Services, I require @Context within JUnit test cases. @Context should contain HttpRequest, HttpSession, ServletContext, ServletConfig and all other webserver related information. I have setup the JUnit for the above, but when I run, @Context is coming as null. This could be because there is no webserver running and there is no @Context. I am just doubting whether there is a way to created sample web @Context and pass to JUnit. Any other ideas are welcome to bring web @Context into JUnit test cases. Thank you, Sudheer

  namespace MyNamespace { static const double GasConstant = 1.987; Class MyClass { // constructors, methods, etc. }; }; I previously had GasConstant declared within the MyClass declaration (and had a separate definition in the source file since C++ does not support const initialization of non-integral types). I however need to access it from other files and also logically it seems like it should reside at the namespace level. My questions is, what effect does static const have in this case? Clearly const means I can't assign a new value to GasConstant, but what does a static member at the namespace mean. Is this similar to filescope static effect, where the member is not accessible outside of the unit?
