• Strange problem of wifi keeps droping every minute on Ubuntu 12.04

  I am running ubuntu 12.04 on my samsung laptop but the wifi connection keeps dropping every minute. I have another dell laptop which also has ubuntu 12.04 but wifi works fine on that. And if I use my samsung laptop at office as its my office laptop wifi works fine. So, I don't understand what the problem is. I have googled it and found solution like set ignoring IPv6 setting but that still does not make any difference. So I don't understand where the problem is if its with my network provider or its with my laptop. I can't blame my network provider as wifi works fine on my other devices including Ipad, mobiles and dell laptop. Even I can't say clearly that its problem with my laptop as wifi works fine in my office. Previously I had ubuntu 13.04 on my samsung laptop and I was having the same issue so I uninstall it and install 12.04 and issues is still the same.

  Using the library GLFW, I can create a fullscreen window using this line of code. glfwOpenWindow(Width, Height, 8, 8, 8, 8, 24, 0, GLFW_FULLSCREEN); The line for creating a standard window looks like this. glfwOpenWindow(Width, Height, 8, 8, 8, 8, 24, 0, GLFW_WINDOW); What I want to do is letting the user switch between standard window and fullscreen by a keypress, let's say F11. It there a common practice of toggling fullscreen mode? What do I have to consider?

• Developing a search algorithm

  I want to create a basic search engine, and I want you to give me some ideas how to filter out the best results for my visitors. I have three fields regarding a product the user can search in: Title Category Description I came up with these ideas and I ask you to either competently criticize them or add to them. If the search term occurs in all three fields it should be among the first results. If it is in two of the fields it is below the results of 1. Combine the amount of occurences and output a value in per cent. For instance if in all fields together the term clock appeared 50 times and in all fields together there are 200 words, then the per cent value is 50/200*100 = 25%. Another product entry amounts to say 20% so product one having 25% is listed before product two having 20%.

• Help to understand directions of sprites in XNA

  If I want to move a sprite to the right and upwards in a 45 degree angle I use Vector2 direction = new Vector2(1,-1); And if the sprite should move straight to right Vector2 direction = new Vector2(1,0); But how would I do if I want another directions, lets say somewhere between this values? I have tested with some other values, but then the sprite either moves to fast and or in another direction than I expected!? I suspect it's about normalize!? Another thing I have problem with to understand. I'm doing a simple asteroids game as a task in a class in C# and XNA. When the asteroids hit the window borders, I want them to bounce back in a random direction, but I can't do this before I understand how directions and Vector2 works. Help is preciated! Thanks!

• How do I connect the seams between my terrain?

  I'm using c++ and D3D11 and I'm trying to create a (pretty) large terrain, lets say 4096x4096, maybe larger. I've got the basics of terrain creation and already split it up into chunks. But, when I'm rendering them (every chunk has its own vertex and index buffer, as well as its own heightmap), there are still little pieces missing between them. I read a lot about LOD(Level Of Detail) and GMM(Geometry Mipmap), but I can't really implement the theory I read. At the moment, it looks like this: I could really use some help, everything is welcome. If you have some good tutorials on any of this, please share them.

• alternatives for google adwords? [on hold]

  I'm making tests on my landing page, and trying to get some traffic using google adwords. Everytime I make a change or add a new keyword, I have to wait for two or three days for google to aprove the keywords. I'm in Italy, don't know if this happens anywhere else. But is really upsetting. Note: they keywords are things like fortran, SaaS, python... So, I'm looking for an adwords alternative that is fast. That is, if I change the keywords, I can start getting traffic as soon as possible without the long approval time. PD: I've found many alternatives to adwords, but they don't say anything about how fast your adds and keywords are approved which is my major problem right now. That, and price.

  I'm not very familiar with Ubuntu or Linux, but I'm a programmer, and some people told me that you can just go ahead and modify your system. So my question is, how do you go on about that? For instance, If I'm interested in modifying the behavior of the button or the desktop icons, or whatever it is: How do I get the source code? I guess I need the package name and download it. But how can I get the package name? Let's say I want the button package, where do I look to get the package name? is there a list on a website or a help file? • Rotate an object given only by its points?

  I was recently writing a simple 3D maze FPP game. Once I was done fiddling with planes in OpenGL, I wanted to add support for importing Blender objects. The approach I used was triangulization of the object, then using Three.js to export the points to plaintext and then parsing the result JSON in my app. The example file can be seen here: https://github.com/d33tah/tinyfpp/blob/master/Data/Models/cross.txt The numbers represent x,y,z,u,v of a single vertex, which combined in three make a triangle. Then I rendered such an object triangle-by-triangle and played with it. I could move it back and forth and sideways, but I still have no idea how to rotate it by some axis. Let's say I'd like to rotate all the points by five degrees to the left, how would a code doing it look like?

• Should I try to write simple key-value storage by myself?

  I need a key-value storage in a simplest form we can think of. Keys should be some fixed-length strings, values should be some texts. This key-value storage should have an HTTP-backed API. That's basically it. As you can see, there is no big difference between such storage and some web application with some upload functionality. The thing is - it'll take few hours (including tests and coffee drinking) to write something like this. "Something like this" will be fully under my control and can be tuned on demand. Should I, in this specific case, not try to reinvent bicycles? Is it better to use some of existing NoSQL solutions. If yes, which one exactly? If, say, I'd needed something SQL-like, I won't ask and won't try to write something by myself. But with NoSQL I just don't know what is adequate and what is not.

• Newly updated ubuntu not loading in moniter.

  I just recently upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 to Ubuntu 12.10. I installed the update and tried to boot from the newly installed version. As I booted in it would pop up the loading screen and then I would lose signal and it would say that there was no signal on my monitor. How do I fix this because I really want to use the new version but if it's not going to work I'll just forget about it. I can however boot into the old install and I works fine.

This is hard because I don't have any work experience nor have I done any programming-related studies. It's also not legal for me to do any freelancing jobs as I'm under the age of 18.   I got a hosting account at HOSTGATOR. it was a shared account and i had three websites present over there. now, i have upgraded my account to VPS at HOSTGATOR and i want to transfer only ONE website over the new VPS. say, mydom.net. this website includes wordpress installation and other custom pages and setup can somebody please guide me How can I transfer the web to my new account? with speed, accuracy, and such that my website remains in working condition.. what will I do about wordpress? simply copy it will work?(I dont thnk so), if not how can I move it?   I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and I found a weird behaviour in the multi-workspace management. Let's say that I have a couple of terminals opened in one workspace, and that I want to do something else in another workspace. I move to that workspace and then I click on the terminal icon. Immediately I am taken to the initial workspace. This is similar to the multiple workspace behaviour in Os X and it is entirely undesirable. How can I disable the application-workspace association in 12.04? Thanks

  I'm studying OOP PHP and working on a small personal project but I have hard time grasping some concepts. Let's say I have a list of items, each item belongs to subcategory, and each subcategory belongs to category. So should I make separate classes for category (with methods to list all categories, add new category, delete category), class for subcategories and class for items? Or should I make creating, listing and deleting categories as methods for item class? Both category and subcategory are very simple and basically consist of ID, Name and parentID (for subcategory).

• Could multiple uses of the same word in image alt tags hurt SEO?

  Let's say on an e-commerce site that sells unique pens, on a particular pen's product page, the image of the pen has an alt tag of "unique red-striped pen"... and another product has "unique blue-spotted pen", etc. The key words across all products being "unique" and "pen", which would also be helpful when it comes to SEO. However, if the person just goes to the general "unique pens" category page and sees a list of thumbnail images, each with the words "unique" and "pen" in the alt tag, would that potentially have a negative impact with regards to SEO by having the words too many times?

• Is there a pattern to restrict which classes can update another class?

  Say I have a class ImportantInfo with a public writable property Data. Many classes will read this property but only a few will ever set it. Basically, if you want to update Data you should really know what you're doing. Is there a pattern I could use to make this explicit other than by documenting it? For example, some way to enforce that only classes that implement IUpdateImportantData can do it (this is just an example)? I'm not talking about security here, but more of a "hey, are you sure you want to do that?" kind of thing.

  Small team of developers doing their work here and there. We have a team leader, and is sole responsible for uploading updated source files from the development server to the production server. So let's say, so if an updated files needs to be uploaded to the prod server, that concerned developer shall notify the team lead about it, and then the team lead will update the files to the prod server. So no developer has an access to the prod server except for the team lead. That's our current setup. Now, what we want to do is to give developers a way for uploading their updated files to the server without the team lead intervening in the process.   I'm really curious right now. I'm a Python programmer, and this question just boggled me: You write an OS. How do you run it? It has to be run somehow, and that way is within another OS? How can an application run without being in an OS? How do you tell the computer to run, say, C, and execute these commands to the screen, if it doesn't have an OS to run in? Does it have to do with a UNIX kernel? If so, what is a unix kernel, or a kernel in general? I'm sure OSes are more complicated than that, but how does it work? • Is it legal to develop a game usung some version of D&D, something similar to Baldurs Gate?

  For a while now I've been thinking about trying my hand at creating a game similar in spirit and execution to Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale and offshoots. I'd rather not face the full bulk of work in implementing my own RPG system - I'd like to use D&D rules. Now, reading about the subject it seems there is something called "The License" which allows a company to brand a game as D&D. This license seems to be exclusive, and let's just say I don't have the money to buy it :p. Is it still legal for me to implement and release such a game? Commercially or open-source? I'm not sure exactly which edition would fit the best, but since Baldurs Gate is based of 2nd edition, could I go ahead an implement that? in short: what are the issues concerning licensing and publishing when it comes to D&D? Also: Didn't see any similar question...

  I have two identical table ie all the columns are identical and one of the datatype is Text, one is varchar(255) and the rest are int. Lets say the table name is 'AAAAA'. Table AAAAA was processed and backed up earlier this month. Both the tables were storing data and now the second table is only storing data. I need to find unmatching records from the second table (BBBBB) which is storing data right now and add those records to Table AAAAA. Your help will be highly appreciated. I tried to use 'EXCEPT' but it does not support text datatype.

• Why does Ubuntu Freezes on ASUS K42DY laptop with RADEON HD6470M Graphics Card?

  Hi,I have an ASUS K42DY laptop with AMD Phenom II x2, 8 GB Ram , 500 GB Hard Drive and has a didicated ATI RADEON HD 6470M Graphics Card and I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bit on it. I have installed GNOME 3 and also followed this Make Ubuntu look like Mac OS X. I have also installed apps from the software center, getdeb & playdeb all of which worked fine. However, I noticed that Ubuntu freezes after inactivity let's say 1-3hrs. I have already set power setting to never standby or hibernate. This is completely annoying because all I can do is log-out via ctrl+alt+del or manually shut down and reboot my laptop. What should I do? By the way, this happens on all shells Unity, Gnome (even with the basic) and Cairo Dock.I set Swap Space at 8GB during installation. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!
