  • Use Dropbox as Offsite Enterprise Backup Solution [on hold]

    For my small company, I'm using Tomahawk Backup as the enterprise offshore solution, as it covers files, databases and Exchange (brick level). The problem is the price... it costs more than 10x the price of Dropbox (and others) for the same space (120GB), and doesn't have de-duplication. So I'm wondering: assuming there is no problem with backing up files only (ie copying the exchange store file and the db files to the Dropbox folder), would Dropbox be suitable as the offsite backup solution?   • How to set CA cert file for LDAP backend server in smbpasswd configuration

    I am having a problem with smbpasswd, an LDAP backend server and SSL/TLS certificates. The client machine that I run smbpasswd on is a Debian Etch machine, and the Ldap server is Sun DS running on Solaris. All the following occurs on the client. When I disable SSL, by setting "ldap ssl = no" in smb.conf, the smbpasswd program works without errors. When I set "ldap ssl = start tls", the following messages are printed by smbpasswd and there is a long timeout period before any password is asked by it Failed to issue the StartTLS instruction: Connect error Connection to LDAP server failed for the 1 try! ..... long delay ..... New SMB password: Retype new SMB password: Failed to issue the StartTLS instruction: Connect error Connection to LDAP server failed for the 1 try! smbpasswd: /tmp/buildd/openldap2-2.1.30/libraries/liblber/io.c:702: ber_get_next: Assertion `0' failed. Aborted I conducted some tests with "ldapsearch -ZZ". It was not working at first, but after I added the TLS_CACERT line to /etc/ldap/ldap.conf, /etc/libnss-ldap.conf and /etc/pam_ldap.conf, it started working. So relevant TLS sections in all those files are: ssl start_tls tls_checkpeer no tls_cacertfile /path/to/ca-root.pem TLS_CACERT /path/to/ca-root.pem But the smbpasswd program continued giving the error. I tried creating /etc/smbldap-tools/smbldap.conf file with following content (after consulting debian docs for smbldap-tools package) But as I see, smbpasswd comes with samba-common package and does not use the configuration for smbldap-tools utilities. verify="optional" cafile="/path/to/ca-root.pem" My question is: How can I set which SSL CA Certificate is used by smbpasswd program ?

  • Is there an easy way to transfer PDF, Mobi, epub, ebooks to the iPad to read yet?

    Besides the 2 ways by using email or putting the PDF on a website (but it is a trouble to go to page 180 by repeated scrolling), is there an easy way to transfer the .PDF, .mobi, .epub to iPad to read, preferably to Kindle or iBooks on the iPad, so that we can add notes or hightlight or bookmark the pages? Exchange 2007 - mailbox role Exchange 2007 client access, transport role I am trying to monitor the following performance counter on my exchange 2007 server (mailbox role) MSExchange Database(Information Store)\Database Page Fault Stalls/sec But I cant find the counter anywhere. I have checked the version of exchange an its 8.3.6 I looked on the other server in case I had it mixed up, but its not here either. Can anyone shed some light ?

Is anyone aware of any whitepaper/document/tutorial or other that they'd recommend we look into? We can't seem to find much.     Looking to do my first offline defrag this weekend on Exchange 2003. Our Exchange DB is on E drive and server1 is the temporary location where there is sufficient space. Dismount the store and change to c:\program files\exchsrvr\bin Does this look like the correct command to run? eseutil /d "e:\exchdata\priv1.edb /t"\\server1\exchtemp\tempdfg.edb" Is there anything I should be aware of such as backups running at the same time etc?

In particular, are the "Read" and "Execute" permissions a problem?     The scenario is like this. Bob has a computer. It crashed. Now he only has the hdd. The hdd is in ext3 format. He go to his office and told the sys admin John to mount this hdd and put the mount point in his home directory. John used the following fstab entries. # Bobs harddisk /media/TAPE4/Bobs-hdd.img /home/bob/myhdd/windows ntfs ro,loop,offset=32256 0 0 /media/TAPE4/Bobs-hdd.img /home/bob/myhdd/linux ext3 ro,loop,offset=14048810496 0 0 /media/TAPE4/Bobs-hdd.img /home/bob/myhdd/extra ntfs ro,loop,offset=28015335936 0 0 Bob was happy. He could access his old extra and windows. Specially the Documents and Settings in windows was helpful for him. But he found a problem. He is a web developer and all his websites are in linux/home/bob/public_html directory. When he tried to access that public_html directory he got permission_denied. So he executed ls -ln drwxr-xr-x 2 1000 1000 4096 Nov 9 2011 Desktop drwxr-xr-x 3 1000 1000 4096 Aug 12 2011 Documents drwxr-xr-x 3 1000 1000 4096 Aug 21 2011 public_html John thinks 1000 is the first uid on a linux system. As he is the admin of the current system. He created his account first. so Johns uid was 1000. Bob also setup his private system and crated his account first. So Bobs uid was 1000 too. So thats an expected behavior. But problem remains. How can Bob access those websites in public_html?

  • Removed recipients number limitation still affects on Exchange 2003

    We have an Exchange 2003 cluster in wich we have limited the number of recipients in the past. We deleted it but it's still affecting our service. I have moved the services to the other node (it's an active/pasive cluster) so i guess i have restarted with this procedure the "Microsoft Exchange Information Store service" as is required to limit it (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996677(v=exchg.80).aspx). anyone have any idea why the limitation is not deleted?

  • Can't Mount Databases in the Recovery Storage Group in Exchange 2003

    After restoring some mail stores, mounting them in the recovery storage group errors out. So far a repair with eseutil (which the log says was successful) and a server reboot has been tried. A defrag is currently running on the mail store I need to go through this again to post the exact error codes, so I will be updating this question. But I thought someone who does this a lot might have a "More times than not..." answer in the meantime.

  • Rsync --backup-dir seems to be ignored

    I want to use rsync to backup a directory from a local location to a remote location, and store changed files in another remote location. I did use: rsync -rcvhL --progress --backup [email protected]:/home/user/Changes/`date +%Y.%m.%d` . [email protected]:/home/user/Files/ The --backup-dir stays empty, while it should be filled. Is it possible what I try to accomplish, and am I doing something wrong? Thanks

  • Browsing Bombs After a Short While

    After a reboot, my internet connection lasts perhaps a half hour or so before tanking. I can ping (by both IP and hostname), but I cannot browse. If I restart the "Network Store Interface Service", my connection comes back. What could be failing with that service or its dependent services that would kill my ability to browse? For some system info, I'm using a Sony Vaio with a fully-patched Windows Vista install and with an Intel 3945ABG wireless adapter.

    Seriously, I'm lost in all that sales mumbo-jumbo. Let's say I want 1 or 2 users to be able to remotely log on to a server, run Word, Visual Studio, Firefox, and whatever. Do I gain anything at all if I install Remote Desktop Services? Or do I just install Desktop Experience feature pack, enable remote desktop and voila, nobody will ever notice the difference? Here's what TechNet says about Remote Desktop Session Host: A Remote Desktop Session Host (RD Session Host) server is the server that hosts Windows-based programs or the full Windows desktop for Remote Desktop Services clients. Users can connect to an RD Session Host server to run programs, to save files, and to use network resources on that server. Users can access an RD Session Host server by using Remote Desktop Connection or by using RemoteApp. The good old simple remote desktop can also host a full Windows desktop for remote clients so that they can run programs, save files and do all that stuff. Why do they write about it like it's such a great new invention, besides that they want to sell it? RDSH doesn't seem all that different at all. What do I install when I install RDSH, since all those features are already there in Windows? What's even more confusing is that you need to take special care when you want to install applications to an RDSH so that they will be usable by many concurrent users. Why? All the modern applications install the program files in one directory, store some common settings in the ProgramData folder and the HKLM hive, and store user specific settings in the Users folder and the HKCU hive. They are designed to be usable by many users on the same machine. 2 or 2000 users can use them concurrently without any efforts. I can sign in with 2 users to a server with only remote desktop enabled, and both of us can run Word or anything without any problems, can't we? So what changes if I set RDSH to install mode, or what happens if I don't? Why is the feature to switch between install and execute mode there at all? Yes I know of some advantages in Remote Desktop Services, like there's no 2 user limit, it supports virtualization, video acceleration and stuff, it has a whole infrastructure with gateway, web access, connection broker, etc. But I don't need those, so if you take these away, how are these two technologies different? From the articles it seems like they are completely different technologies, whereas it looks to me that they are completely the same at the core, and Remote Desktop Services just adds some additional features, but doesn't reinvent anything.

  • WMI query to check setting "Reversible Encryption" in Windows XP

    In Windows XP, there are two settings in Group Policy I'm looking at: Password must meet complexity requirements Store password using reversible encryption Both of these settings are under Local Computer Policy/Computer Config/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Account Policies/Password Policy. For the first one, I have found the setting in RSOP_SecurityEventLogSettingBoolean class in WMI. However, I can't find the latter. Does anybody know in which class in WMI can I read that particular setting?

  • Windows Domain Chaos - Any Solving Approach

    we are running an old Window 2003 Server as Domain Controller (DC2003). To safely migrate to Windows 2008 R2 we added a 2008 R2 (DC2008R2) to the domain as domain controller (adprep etc.). After dcpromo on DC2008R2 everything seemed to be ok. The new DC appeared under the "Domain Controlelrs" node. It wasn't checked at this time, if DC2008R2 can REALLY act as domain controller. Later we tried to shutdown DC2003 and ran into a total mess with non functional Exchange and Team Foundation Services. After that I got the job to fix... First i thought it could be an Problem with DC2008R2. So I removed it as Domain Controller and installed a new Windows 2008 R8 Server DC2008R2-2. I ran into similar Problems. I tried a bunch of stuff, but nothign helped. I won't list it, maybe I made an mistake, so I'm willing to redo it with your suggestions. To have a starting point I tried the best practise analyser whicht ended up with 24 "Compatible" and 26 "Not Compatible" tests. From these 26 tests 19 read the same. (I'm translating from german, so that may to be the exact wording) Problem: Using the Best Practise Analyser for Active Directory Domain Services (Active Directory Domain Services Best Practices Analyzer, AD DS BPA) no data can be be gathered using the name of the forest and the domain controller DC2008R2-2. I appreciate any suggestions, this really bothers me.
