• Log oddities: 404s for client-garbled image URLs

  I've noticed some odd 404s which appear to be broken URL rewriting code: Our deep zoom view generates images URLs like this: /media/204/service/dzi/1/1_files/7/0_0.jpg I see some - well under <1% - requests for slightly altered URLs: /media/204/s/rvice/d/i/1/1_files/7/0_0.jpg These requests come from IP addresses all over the world (US, Canada, China, Russia, India, Israel, etc.), desktop and mobile users with multiple user-agents (Chrome, IE, Firefox, Mobile Safari, etc.), and there is plenty of normal activity in the same session so I'm assuming this is either widespread malware or some broken proxy service. I have not seen them from anything other than images, which suggests that this may be some sort of content filter. Has anyone else seen this? My CDN logs show the first request on June 8th ramping up from several dozen to several hundred per day.

• Making fonts render similarly across browsers

  I am building a website for a client, and we had hoped to use plain text, not images in the navigation bar. The font we are using is Century Gothic (I believe that this font is available on the majority of PCs and Macs) The problem is, that on different browsers the font renders significantly differnt. In Chrome we got it looking the way we want, but in firefox the text is smaller and bolder. Aside from writing browser specific javascript to alter the font properties, are there any other options to standardize the way the fonts are rendered cross-browser. Perhaps some library or API? Maybe its a matter of being more specific in declaring font properties? Honestly I am stuck and need help.

  I need to put a "Bookmark us" in my website. But as I searched using Google all the results conclude that no way to do "Bookmark us" for Chrome/Chromium browsers. So I want to either: 1- Hide the content from chrome/chromium browsers. or at least, 2- Show a message if the user's browser is chrome/chromium after clicking that buttong. • How long should my Html Page Title Really be?

  How long should my text within my <title></title> tags really be? I know Google cuts it off at some point but when? When I used IIS7's SEO Toolkit 1.0 I get error stating my title should be under 65 characters. I have a book by Bruce Clay that states I should use from 62-70 characters and roughly 9 +/- 3 words. I also have used SenSEO's Firefox Add-on and it states I should use a max of 65 characters or roughly 15 words. What is the max really? I have 2 sources saying 65 and 1 saying 72 but Bruce Clay is generally kept in high regard.

• Keyboard doesn't work with Tor Browser

  I use the actual Tor Browser 2.3.25-14 and Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander). I start Tor in the command-line window (./start-tor-browser). The cable less keyboard and mouse (Logitech) are working, the Vidalia control panel opens, after having connected to the Tor network, the Tor Browser window (Firefox) opens automatically. The onion is green, everything ok. But the keyboard doesn't work in the Tor Browser window, the mouse, yes, does work. When I close Tor with the Vidalia control panel and open another application, the keyboard works again. Is there somebody who can help me or at least understands the problem? Thanks a lot!

• Global menu stopped working for most applications

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 32 bits and I had been enjoying global menus and HUD since the beginning. However, for some strange reason, I stopped having global menus for most applications and thus no HUD fun anymore. Actually, the only two applications where I continue to have global menus are Thunderbird and Firefox, so not sure if it has something to do with these two... I've already browsed through some similar reports and already tried the following: checking if indicator-appmenu was installed. tried to use Unsettings to switch on and off, with reboots in the middle, global menus. logged in with a different user to see if it was some configuration of my user. also checked, using dconf-editor that, com ? canonical ? indicator ? appmenu ? menu-mode = "global" Any hint/help would be appreciated! • Default file manager changed, can't change back

  (Using ubuntu 11.04) I tried to open a torrent file in chrome, and it asked for my default application, so I clicked Transmission, and then I got an error: "Failed to execute default file manager, Failed to execute child process "transmission" (No such file or directory)." Now if I click on any shortcut on the unity bar, such as the trash folder or the icon for my portable hard drive, I get this error, as well as with any download or folder from chrome or firefox. I can't seem to figure out how to fix this, as there seems to be no easy way to do it.

• Will Unity allow users to change the color/appearance of the top-Panel?

  I'm very excited by the functional design principles and keyboard shortcuts that are being implemented for Unity. And function of use is more important to me than looks. However, after experiencing the aesthetic beauty of the display of the top panel in gnome-shell, I was wondering if users would be able to alter the color of Unity's top panel? IMHO it does not look as good as the gnome-shell implementation (or mac OS X/iPad). I think if an alternate color/appearance were chosen for the panel, it would make a big difference aesthetically. Is there a way to make it Black like gnome-shell? Or are the color choices limited to theme-designs as pointed out in this answer? For efficiency and clarity, the Panel should be better differentiated from application controls. The panel should be a different color because it has a "constant (always present) state," unlike application controls. For contrast and easy-recognition, I would like to make the Panel black (like gnome-shell) but make the application controls (e.g., those of Firefox) "Inverted"

• What's the best Wireframing tool?

  I'm looking for something similar to iPlotz or Mockup. I've found the Pencil Project, but it requires xulrunner-1.9 (which seems to be incompatible with xulrunner-1.9.2) in order to run as a standalone application. It can be used as a firefox plugin... but it is a bit slower. The error on my desktop (Ubuntu 10.04) is: Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.1 and 1.9.2.* Does anyone know other software? Edit: Open-source software is preferred, and it doesn't matter whether or not it's free.

• Ubuntu GUI crash when LightDM enters, unable to login

  This issue happened spounteniously, i don´t know what could have cause it as i wasn´t using the PC when it happened. I ruled out any messing around with the setting as the user doesn´t know how to enter the BIOS, doesn´t have the sudo password and was only using firefox and libreoffice when it happened. After the plymouth sequence i get this error. https://www.dropbox.com/s/uf1xdkqkw9alvcu/IMAG0252.jpg And this option: https://www.dropbox.com/s/tpivkgjkx2spa3v/IMAG0253.jpg I follow each option and nothing happens after that. The issue persist after rebooting. I choose the other options to see if anything happens, i either get back to option 1 or doesn´t show anything anormal. (I have pictures i someone wants to know) What i found weird is that event though the error is possitioned in the chip, however ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04 run fine in a live CD I saw that some people are having issues when LightDM has a non default wallpaper, but i use a default one. • How to make browser offer "remember password"

  What properties login form needs to have to trigger "remember password" for all (or most) browsers? Background: For years I have been using Opera, and the rule has been that almost anything that looks like login form triggers this feature. Now I'm exploring other browsers, and surprisingly find that one of login forms I visit most often, Roundcube login page, does not trigger this feature neither in Chromium nor Firefox (tried various versions and page setups of RC). Since it's on my VPS, I could patch it up and eventually even send that to RC development team, but I have the unnerving feeling that this must have been solved over and over, and it's just me being blind or something. So again: is there any consensus between browser developer as to when this featue should be triggered? Is there a best practice for webmasters to tell the browser "this is the login page"? Or are all browsers doing their own heuristics?

• Inconsistent mouse cursor status while typing

  I have noticed that when I type in some programs, Text Editor, Terminal, Bluefish, Gnome Baker, etc. the mouse cursor disappears while I am typing. In other programs like Firefox and LibreOffice, it does not. I am not an application programmer, but I imagined it has to do with their cross-platform nature and the way they are compiled or the toolkits they use. Then I noticed that Gnome-Do behaves the same way, the cursor stays on screen while typing. Why is there inconsistent handling of the mouse cursor, while typing, across different applications? Thank you.

• How does one pronounce "cron" as in "cron job"?

  Before someone ban-hammers this question as they do with all other pronunciation questions, let me explain its relevance. Verbal communication among co-workers and partners is important; today I was on a conference call with people discussing what I thought was something to do with "Chrome", as in Google Chrome. I pronounce the "cron" in "cron job" with a short O, much like "tron", "gone," or "pawn", but this individual pronouced it with a long O, as in "hone", "bone", or "stone" (notice the e at the end of all those!). Is there a standard pronunciation? Or is this a matter of opinion. For example, there's nothing ambiguous about the pronunciation of "Firefox", but debate is raging over "potato" and "tomato".

• Installing chrome gives an error: "dependency is not satisfiable"

  I just installed ubuntu on my laptop, everything works fine, but I'd like to use chrome instead of firefox. I downloaded the .deb file from the chrome website, and when I open it, the install buton inside the software center is inactive (I can't click it) and it's telling me dependency is not satisfiable: libcurl3 I did a search for libcurl3 in the Software Center, the three results I'm getting are already installed. Any ideas how to fix this? I also tried installing chromium-browser, but that's not working out neither. • How to fix corrupted desktop icons and fonts?

  I love Linux, but am a real novice. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32bit alongside Windows XP. The installation seems to work just fine except for the desktop. The icons & font becomes corrupted to the point that it looks like Chinese. After surfing with Mozilla Firefox for a long time, the same problem begins with the web pages. I want to be free of Windows, but must solve this problem first. Can you help? Thank you.

• Keyboard shortcuts don't work continuously

  First I had the problem of the keyboard layout resetting itself on each reboot from DE (german) to EN (us). I followed the advice of using dconf in order to make the DE layout my personal default (see Keyboard layout switches to English each time I reboot). However, after that, my shortcuts didn't work properly anymore. In Firefox, Kile etc. everything works fine while in Nautilus, copying/erasing/pasting is impossible even when I change the keyboard layout back to En (us). Also, I'm not even able to select multiple items using the cursor in Nautilus while every acts normal on the desktop. It's quite confusing. I've read about a similar bug (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1226962) but since German is a latin language there is no appropriate solution given for my problem. Any help is really appreciated here. Edit: The third reboot resolved the problem so the shortcuts finally work in Nautilus again. Still, selecting multiple objects using the cursor isn't possible.
