  • Hudson as passive server

  • HTML or Alternate markup for wiki site?

    In choosing an editor for my wiki-like site, I'm debating whether to allow HTML or a custom alternate markup (maybe like wikipedia/wikimedia's or BBCode). HTML benefits: Easy for users to deal with (copying and pasting, learning) Somewhat future proof Many more editing tools available, usually WYSIWYG too Alternate markup benefits: On the server side I don't have to worry about parsing malicious javascript or styles or HTML that I don't allow Can be easy to learn Can be easier to decipher if not HTML-savvy Am I missing something, what's the best solution?

  • When to use a namespace or a struct?

  • How to run red5 apps on a remote server?

    I've got a really nasty problem... I wrote a red5 app and so on and it is running perfectly on my local computer. Now the problem occurs = How can I make this program work on a remote server? Local : OSX 10.5 - red5 0.63 Server: CentOS 5 - red5 0.90 Maybe its because of the version difference... but I can't test red5 0.90 locally becaus it won't start up -.-' and I can't install the 0.63 on the server because of missing dependencies (and broken links to them...)

  • Java SSH2 libraries in depth: Trilead/Ganymed/Orion [/other?]

    I have been searching for a pure Java SSH library to use for a project. The single most important needed feature is that it has to be able to work with command-line git, but remote-controlling command-line tools is also important. A pretty common choice, e.g. used in the IntelliJ IDEA git integration (which works very well), seems to be Trilead SSH2. Looking at their website, it's not being maintained any more. Trilead seems to have been a fork of Ganymed SSH2, which was a ETH Zurich project that didn't see releases for a while, but had a recent release by its new owner, Christian Plattner. There is another actively maintained fork from that code base, Orion SSH, that saw an even more recent release, but which seems to get mentioned online much less than the other 2 forks. Has anybody here worked with any of (or, if possible, both) of Ganymed and Orion and could kindly describe the development experience with either/both? Accuracy of documentation [existence of documentation?], stability, buggyness... - all of these would be highly interesting to me. Performance is not so important for my current project. If there is another pure-Java SSH implementation that should be used instead, please feel free to mention it, but please don't just mention a name...describe your judgment from actual experience. Sorry if this question may seem a bit "do my homework"-y, but I've really searched for reviews. Everything out there seems to be either a listing of implementations or short "use this! it's great!" snippets.

  • Is undefined behavior worth it?

    Many bad things happened and continue to happen (or not, who knows, anything can happen) due to undefined behavior. I understand that this was introduced to leave some wiggle-room for compilers to optimize, and maybe also to make C++ easier to port to different platforms and architectures. However the problems caused by undefined behavior seem to be too large to be justified by these arguments. What are other arguments for undefined behavior? If there are none, why does undefined behavior still exist?

  • Nice, clean, simple way of getting a dataset from ASP.NET to plain HTML jQuery or JavaScript library

    I know this is a probable open ended question, and I have tried looking around so much over the last year or two... maybe I am looking for a perfect place that doesn't exist! of course it's all about perception no less.. Anyway, just to clarify what I am trying to do and why: I want to be able to use (primarily for the moment) ASP.NET or services thereof to get a dataset - whatever the source data, I can obviously get a dataset of rows/Columns. I want to be able to, as simply as possible, get that data over to the client via xml/json/whatever, to then use in a "variety" of ways. "Variety" of ways meaning I would like to "easily" bind that data to say a grid, or a combo dropdown or just simply render to a textbox - BUT by referencing the dataset as I would say on the serverside. Now I know this all sounds simplistic, and I know there are lots of complications.. so I have tried the following so far over the last year or so: ExtJS - very good, nice solid framework, but just found it a bit too much to use in everyday basic apps - great if I was building a whole application with it Yahoo YUI - not looked recently, but I guess some of the concepts with ExtJS were similar? JQuery - of course to get data etc, it was ok, and I guess there are so many 3rd party plugins, that a mix and match might work? Adobe SPRY - ironically this was as close to getting a dataset style structure to Javascript/client, although it seemed to drop off/go quiet..? I maybe wrong.. I did have a very cursory play with Tibco GI and another one I cannot remember the name of! but again, it felt like it was great to build a whole app perhaps? Anyway, I am very amazed by all of the technologies coming out, and really not biased one way or the other, I really just want a very simple way of getting data from the server, and having a basic/very flexible way of working with that data in the client without using server technologies.. I need to keep the server flexible as I may need to use PHP, or java technologies not just .NET So again, sorry for the rambles, but if anyone out there has had a simple experience, or would like to share some ideas, it would be very welcomed!!     I'm using a jQuery plugin that has its functions defined as such: $('#mydiv').pluginAction({ someproperty: val, format: 'mm hh', labels: ['yes', 'no', 'maybe'], labels1: ['never', 'always'] }); In my HTML page, I have multiple DIVs that have the same properties for format, labels, labels1, but different values for someproperty. Is there some type of JavaScript notation I can take advantage of to shorten the definition so that I don't have to have duplicate code?

  • Deploying only changed portions of a war to Tomcat

    I'm deploying my application to Tomcat, which currently involves uploading a ~40MB war file to a remote server. Often the changes within the war only affect jars and static content which account for maybe 2 - 3MB's. Is there some tooling I can integrate with my Ant script that can accurately detect the changes to the war and give me a smaller subset to upload?

  • Pause and resume thread drawing to SurfaceView

    I am developing a chess game for Android (http://androidchess.appspot.com), using SurfaceView for the chessboard. I have a drawing Thread, that draws the chessboard in a loop. The problem is that when there are no active animations (this is more that 90% of time), it makes no sense to waste CPU and battery for drawing. How should I solve this? Maybe somehow pausing and resuming the drawing Thread?

  • How to communicate between Client and Server in a Client-Server Application?

    I would like to implement an Client-Server Application, where the business-logic, security validations and a database are at the server and the user interface are at the client. I would like to implement clients in different languages i.e. one in WPF/.NET, one Swing/Java , one in Android/Java and maybe one HTML/JavaScript client. The server will be on Internet, so I would like to be able to have encrypted communication. The client will send some lists of items to be added to the database, or update items, and do some transactions. The server will check if the items are already updated by another client, or update the item, add new items or delete items. How do I solve the communication between clients and the server in such a system? I have been thinking about: http/https webserver, and sending messages in JSON or XML and use Web Sockets for bi-directional communication. Use http in a RESTful way, except when WebSockets are needed. But I guess there are better solutions for native desktop applications than http? CORBA - I have just heard about it, and it's old and complex. Not much talk about it these days. XMPP/Jabber - I have just heard about it and I don't know if it fits me at all. EJabberd seams to be a popular implementation. AMQP - I have just heard about it and I don't know if it fits me at all. RabbitMQ seams to be a popular implementation. Windows Communication Foundation, Java RMI, Java Message Service - but are they language independent? I guess some of these alternatives are on different levels, maybe I can have i.e xmpp or amqp in web sockets over https? What technologys are used for this problem in companies today? and what is recommended to use? I have no experience of them other than webservers and http. Please give me some guidance in this jungle. What are the pros and cons of these technologies in my situation?

  • How does assembly language interact with something like the Internet?

    So I was thinking about languages the other day, and it struck me that any program written in a compiled language that interacts with the Internet is then translated into assembly that has to interact with the Internet. I've just begun learning a bit of x86 assembly to help me understand C++ a bit better, and I'm baffled by how something so low-level could do something like access the Internet.     I have an array of structs in ColdFusion. I'd like to sort this array based on one of the attributes in the structs. How can I achieve this? I've found the StructSort function, but it takes a structure and I have an array. If this is not possible purely in ColdFusion, is it possible in Java somehow (maybe using Arrays.sort(Object[], Comparator))?
