  • Are there reasons why the java/spring/hibernate stack aren't popular in the web 2.0 space?

    I am really impressed with the java/spring/hibernate stack, and really want to dive in. Just curious, why are so many people using rails when java/spring/hibernate are tried and true? I guesss its because of the convention over configuration and time to launch? (spring has really gone the annotation route so less xml though). I realize this is subjective, but just looking for some thoughts on this.

  • Can the Windows Media Player COM control play AVI files from memory (instead of from a file)?

    I have a C# app, and I'm looking at using the Windows Media Player COM control to play animation and audio. So far, the only way I see of programatically controlling what the control is playing is to set its URL property to point to some file (I assume there's some way to pass in a playlist). Is there any way the WMP can render an AVI that is entirely in-memory, like a MemoryStream or something? If so, can WMP skip from one AVI to the next seamlessly (i.e. no glitch in either the audio or the video as it transitions from one to the next)? If WMP only plays files, is there some way to cue up a list of the files in advance of play start? If so, can WMP be made to skip from one file to the next without a brief interruption? Any knowledge or links to knowledge would be much appreciated.

    Apache Wicket ( http://wicket.apache.org/ ) and Apache Tapestry ( http://wicket.apache.org/ ) are both component oriented web frameworks - contrary to action based frameworks like Stripes - by the Apache Foundation. Both allow you to build your application from components in Java. They both look very similar to me. What are the differences between those two frameworks? Has someone experience in both? Specifically: How is their performance, how much can state handling be customized, can they be used stateless? What is the difference in their component model? What would you choose for which applications? How do they integrate with Guice, Spring, JSR 299? Edit: I have read the documentation for both and I have used both. The questions cannot be answered sufficently from reading the documentation, but from the experience from using these for some time, e.g. how to use Wicket in a stateless mode for high performance sites. I need individualized error messages like the following one: suche.elements.methode.options.validators.strlen.options.messages.stringLengthTooLong = "Der Suchbegriff '%value%' ist zu lang!" This works well for strlen and regex, but how do I set it up for "required" elements? I tried stuff like suche.elements.methode.options.validators.notempty.options.messages.isEmpty = "Der Suchbegriff darf nicht leer sein!" but this throws exceptions.

    Hi, Following on from my earlier question, I am still having issues with loading the xml file into Zend_Navigation. I am now getting the following error message: <b>Fatal error</b>: Uncaught exception 'Zend_Navigation_Exception' with message 'Invalid argument: Unable to determine class to instantiate' in C:\www\mysite\development\website\library\Zend\Navigation\Page.php:223 I've tried to make my navigation.xml file look similar to the example on the Zend Documentation, However I just can't seem to get it to work.     Given a EF-Code First CTP5 entity layout like: public class Person { ... } which has a collection of: public class Address { ... } which has a single association of: public class Mailbox { ... } I want to do: PersonQuery.Include(x => x.Addresses).Include("Addresses.Mailbox") WITHOUT using a magic string. I want to do it using a lambda expression. I am aware what I typed above will compile and will bring back all Persons matching the search criteria with their addresses and each addresses' mailbox eager loaded, but it's in a string which irritates me.   • Way to automate setting of MergeOptions

    I am looking for an automated way to iterate over all ObjectQueries and set the merge option to no tracking (read only context). Once i find out how to do it i will be able to generate a default read only context using a T4 template. Is this possible? For example lets say i have these tables in my object context SampleContext TableA TableB TableC I would have to go through and do the below. SampleContext sc = new SampleContext(); sc.TableA.MergeOption = MergeOption.NoTracking; sc.TableB.MergeOption = MergeOption.NoTracking; sc.TableC.MergeOption = MergeOption.NoTracking; I am trying to find a way to generalize this using object context. I want to get it down to something like foreach(var objectQuery : sc){ objectQuery.MergeOption = MergeOption.NoTracking; } Preferably I would like to do it using the baseclass(ObjectContext): ObjectContext baseClass = sc as ObjectContext var objectQueries = sc.MetadataWorkspace.GetItem("Magic Object Query Option); But i am not sure i can even get access to the queries.   • Moving to .net 4 results in System.Transactions Critical: 0

    Hi I have fully working project in .net 3.5SP1, with EF 1 ORM. I tried to upgrade to .net 4. No issue while upgrading... Then i ran the project and got a NullExecptionError, with no stack trace... and no way to debug.   • .NET CF -- Set Form height based on InputPanel state

    Hi, So, I've got a C# project for Windows Mobile phones and I'm trying to work with the InputPanel. Specifically, I've got one form with a stack of Labels and TextBoxes that collect user input. I have an InputPanel that alerts me when the user opens the SIP. Everything works fine so far. When I get messages that the SIP status has changed, I want to change the height of the Form, which doesn't seem possible. Here's my event handler for my InputPanel: void m_InputPanel_EnabledChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { // :( this assignment operation doesn't work and it doesn't this.ClientSize = inputPanel1.VisibleDesktop.Size; // doesn't work this.Size = inputPanel1.VisibleDesktop.Size; // assignment operation works, but isn't very useful this.visibleHeight = inputPanel1.VisibleDesktop.Height; this.InitializeUI(); } When I say that the assignment operation doesn't work, I mean that the values don't change in the debugger. I can understand that maybe I can't change the size of a Form, but I can't understand why trying to change it wouldn't throw an exception, or give a compiler error. I have my Form WindowState set to Normal instead of Maximized, but it doesn't make a difference. Also, I have read http://www.christec.co.nz/blog/archives/42 this page that tells me how I'm supposed to do this, but I can't easily put all of my controls in a Panel because I'm using a bunch of custom stuff to do alpha background controls.

  • If I want to play the same sound 10 times per second, must I have 10 copies of that sound in memory?

    I have a sound that needs to get played 10 times per second. The sound is 1 second long. So it does overlap like 10 times. However, as far as I understand the Finch sound library, I would need 10 different instances of a sound in place so that I can play it 10 times at almost the same time. When I have just one instance, the sound would stop and play from the beginning on every iteration, but not overlap with itself. How to do that?

I have configured a bean which I intend to use as a factory bean. <bean id="jsServicesFactory" class="x.y.z.JSServicesFactory" /> It is a very basic class - which has 4 getter methods. One example is public final PortletRegistry getPortletRegistry() { PortletRegistry registry = (PortletRegistry) JetspeedPortletServices .getSingleton().getService("PortletRegistryComponent"); return registry; } I have a 2nd bean which uses this factory beans to set one of its properties <bean id="batchManagerService" class="x.y.z.BatchManagerService"> ... <property name="portletRegistry"> <bean factory-bean="jsServicesFactory" factory-method="getPortletRegistry" /> </property> ... When I start my server in RAD, this all works perfectly. However when I deploy to Linux I sometimes get the following error ERROR org.springframework.web.context.ContextLoader - Context initialization failed org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'batchManagerService' defined in ServletContext resource [/WEB-INF/context/root/batchManagerContext.xml]: Cannot create inner bean 'jsServicesFactory$created#70be70be' while setting bean property 'portletRegistry'; nested exception is org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'jsServicesFactory$created#70be70be' defined in ServletContext resource [/WEB-INF/context/root/batchManagerContext.xml]: Instantiation of bean failed; nested exception is org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanDefinitionStoreException: Factory method [public final org.apache.jetspeed.components.portletregistry.PortletRegistry x.y.z.JSServicesFactory.getPortletRegistry()] threw exception; nested exception is java.lang.NullPointerException I have tried adding depends-on="jsServicesFactory" to my bean batchManagerService but it didn't work. The additional query: SELECT COUNT(1) AS `zend_paginator_row_count` FROM `content` The normal query: SELECT `content`.`id`, `content`.`name` FROM `content` LIMIT 2 PHP: $adapter = new Zend_Paginator_Adapter_DbSelect($table->select()->from($table, array('id', 'name'))); $paginator = new Zend_Paginator($adapter); Could I merge the two querys into one (for better performance)?

    Hi all, Supose you have a form with a button that starts/stops a thread (NOT pausing or interrupting, I really need to stop the thread !) Check out this code: Constructor() { m_TestThread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(ButtonsThread)); m_bStopThread = false; } ButtonClick { // If the thread is not running, start it m_TestThread.Start(); // If the thread is running, stop it m_bStopThread = true; m_TestThread.Join(); } ThreadFunction() { while(!m_bStopThread) { // Do work } } 2 questions (remember CF): - How can I know if the thread is running (I cannot seem to access the m_pThreadState, and I've tried the C++ GetThreadExitCode(), it give false results) ? - Most important question : if I have stopped the thread, I cannot restart it, most probably because the m_TestThread.m_fStarted is still set (and it is private so I cannot access it) ! And thus m_TestThread.Start() generates an exception (StateException). Stopping the thread with an Abort() doesn't solve it. If I put my m_TestThread = null; it works, but then I create a memory leak. The GC doesn't clean up either, even if I wait for xx seconds. Anybody has an idea ? All help highly appreciated ! Grtz E

  • problem parsing with XMLReader (using ReadSubTree)

    Hello. Im trying to build a simple XML to Controls parser in my CF application. In the code below the string im trying to parse looks like this: "<Panel><Label>Text1</Label><Label>Text2</Label></Panel>" The result i want with this code would be a Panel with two labels. But the problem is when the first Label is parsed the subreader.Read() returns false in the ParsePanelElementh method, and so it falls out of while statement. Since im new into XMLReader i must be missing something very simple.   • How to add entity object to adequate entity set with object context in EF?

    I have a problem when I add an entity object with ObjectContext.AddObject method because I can't retrieve that object with LINQ querying my ObjectContext.Person entities. I know that this new added object is stored somewhere, because it is used to update database after SaveChanges method. That's bothers me because I want to update my datagrid DataContext without saving changes unless I really want to do it. It doesn't help if I add the same object to DataContext list myself directly.

    I'm using Kohana 2. I would like to catch a database exception to prevent an error page when no connection to the server can be established. The error displayed is system/libraries/drivers/Database/Mysql.php [61]: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 110 The database server is not reachable at all at this point. I'm doing this from a model. I tried both public function __construct() { // load database library into $this->db try { parent::__construct(); } catch (Exception $e) { die('Database error occured'); } } as well as try { $hoststatus = $this->db->query('SELECT x FROM y WHERE z;'); } catch (Exception $e) { die('Database error occured'); } ...but none of them seemed to work. It seems as if no exception gets passed on from the main model. Is there another way to catch the database error and use my own error handling?
