• MySQL indexes: how do they work?

  I'm a complete newbie with MySQL indexes. I have several MyISAM tables on MySQL 5.0x having utf8 charsets and collations with 100k+ records each. The primary keys are generally integer. Many columns on each table may have duplicate values. I need to quickly count, sum, average, or otherwise perform custom calculations on any number of fields in each table or joined on any number of others. I found this page giving an overview of MySQL index usage: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysql-indexes.html, but I'm still not sure I'm using indexes right. Just when I think I've made the perfect index out of a collection of fields I want to calculate against, I get the "index must be under 1000 bytes" error. Can anyone explain how to most efficiently create and use indexes to speed up queries? Caveat: upgrading Mysql is not possible in this case. Using Navicat Light for db administration, but this app isn't required.

  I've read in some posts that having duplicate partitioning key can have a performance impact. I've two tables like: CREATE TABLE "Test1" ( CREATE TABLE "Test2" ( key text, key text, column1 text, name text, value text, age text, PRIMARY KEY (key, column1) ... ) PRIMARY KEY (key, name,age) ) In Test1 column1 will contain column name and value will contain its corresponding value.The main advantage of Test1 is that I can add any number of column/value pairs to it without altering the table by just providing same partitioning key each time. Now my question is how will each of these table schema's impact the read/write performance if I've millions of rows and number of columns can be upto 50 in each row. How will it impact the compaction/repair time if I'm writing duplicate entries frequently?

  I have a query SELECT assetid, type_code, version, name, short_name, status, languages, charset, force_secure, created, created_userid, updated, updated_userid, published, published_userid, status_changed, status_changed_userid FROM sq_ast WHERE assetid = 7 which doesn't work and throws ERROR: operator does not exist: character varying = integer LINE 4: FROM sq_ast WHERE assetid = 7 I can get it to work by doing SELECT assetid, type_code, version, name, short_name, status, languages, charset, force_secure, created, created_userid, updated, updated_userid, published, published_userid, status_changed, status_changed_userid FROM sq_ast WHERE assetid = '7' Please note the quoting of the 7 in the WHERE clause... I am deploying an huge application and I cannot rewrite the core... similarly I don't want to risk changing the type of the column... I'm no Postgres expert... please help... Is there an option for strict casting of columns???

  I attempted to install the gmaps4rails gem. I added gem 'gmaps4rails' to my Gemfile, and ran 'bundle install. It said that my bundle installed successfully. I can find "Using gmaps4rails (0.8.8)" with 'gem list'. I added the specified columns to my users table with rake db:migrate and added acts_as_gmappable and the gmaps4rails_address method to my User model. Visiting pages that involve the user model gives me "undefined local variable or method 'acts_as_gmappable'"error. Is there something that I am missing? For greater context, the code I am using is from the Rails 3 Tutorial. OS X 10.6.6 ruby 1.8.7 rails 3.0.7 passenger 3.0.7

  server side is PHP + zend framework. problem: i have huge of data appox 5000 records and no of columns are 5 in input.txt file. i like to read all data into memory only once and send some data to the every browser request. but if i update that input.txt file then updated data must be auto synchronized to that memory location. so i need to solve that problem by using memory caching technique.but caching technique has expire time.but if input.txt is updated before cache expire then i need to auto synchronize to that memory location. now i am using zend framework 1.10.is it possible in zend framework. can anybody give me some line of code of zendfrmawork i have no option to use memchached server(distributed). Only zend framwork.

  Hi! Is it smart to keep arrays in table columns? More precisely I am thinking of the following schema which to my understanding violates normalization: create table Permissions( GroupID int not null default(-1), CategoryID int not null default(-1), Permissions varchar(max) not null default(''), constraint PK_GroupCategory primary key clustered(GroupID,CategoryID) ); and this: create table Permissions( GroupID int not null default(-1), CategoryID int not null default(-1), PermissionID int not null default(-1), constraint PK_GroupCategory primary key clustered(GroupID,CategoryID) ); UPD: Forgot to mention, in the scope of this concrete question we will consider that the "fetch rows that have permission X" won't be performed, instead all the lookups will be made by GroupID and CategoryID only Thoughts?   Hello, I want to be able to store -11.99 and +11.99 kind of values in mysql db I am thinking of decimals instead of varchar. But reading mysql site I found out that its incompatible with older versions of mysql As a result of the change from string to numeric format for DECIMAL storage, DECIMAL columns no longer store a leading + or - character or leading 0 digits. Before MySQL 5.0.3, if you inserted +0003.1 into a DECIMAL(5,1) column, it was stored as +0003.1. As of MySQL 5.0.3, it is stored as 3.1. For negative numbers, a literal - character is no longer stored. Applications that rely on the older behavior must be modified to account for this change. So what should be the data type, If I have to give up varchar and make it compatible with older versions too?

  Hello, In MySQL I have a table called "meanings" with three columns: "person" (int), "word" (byte, 16 possible values) "meaning" (byte, 26 possible values). A person assigns one or more meanings to each word: person word meaning ------------------- 1 1 4 1 2 19 1 2 7 <-- second meaning for word 2 1 3 5 ... 1 16 2 Then another person, and so on. There will be thousands of persons. I need to find for each of the 16 words the top three meanings (with their frequencies). Something like: word 1: meaning 5 (35% of people), meaning 19 (22% of people), meaning 2 (13% of people) word 2: meaning 8 (57%), meaning 1 (18%), meaning 22 (7%) ... Is it possible to solve this with a single MySQL query? (If this problem is a classic one and has been answered elsewhere, I would appreciate if you could give me a link to the solution.) • DbMetal chokes on repeated foreign key references in SQLite - any ideas?

  I've been struggling to get DbMetal to process my SQLite database. I finally isolated the problem. It won't allow a table to have two foreign key references to the same column. For example, a SQLite database with these two tables will fail: CREATE TABLE Person ( Id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY, Name TEXT NOT NULL ); CREATE TABLE Match ( Id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY, WinnerPersonId INTEGER NOT NULL REFERENCES Person(Id), LoserPersonId INTEGER NOT NULL REFERENCES Person(Id) ); I get this error: DbMetal: Sequence contains more than one matching element If I get rid of the second foreign key reference, no error occurs. So, this works: CREATE TABLE Match ( Id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY, WinnerPersonId INTEGER NOT NULL REFERENCES Person(Id), LoserPersonId INTEGER NOT NULL ); But I really need both "person" columns to reference the person table. I submitted a bug report for this, but I could use a workaround in the meantime. Any ideas?

• Favouriting things in a database - most efficient method of keeping track?

  I'm working on a forum-like webapp where I'd like to allow users to favourite an item so that they can keep track of it, and also so that others can see how many times an item's been favourited. The problem is, I'm unsure on the best practices for databases, which includes this situation. I have two ideas in my head on how to do this: Add an extra column to the user table and store things like so: "|2|5|73|" Add an extra table with at least two columns, one for referencing an item, the other for referencing a user. I feel uncomfortable about going for the second method as it involves an extra table, and potentially more queries would be required. Perhaps these beliefs aren't an issue, as I have little understanding of databases beyond simply working with table layouts and basic queries.

I'm looking for Redistributable to our enterprise customers. We control the hardware so it doesn't have to work perfectly on every device. Display strings and numbers in columns with headings. Scrollable, but no paging. Don't row editing. Need to add and delete rows. User re-sizable column widths, and a way to persist that. Work with .NET CF 2.0 or 3.5 on Windows CE 6.0 Any suggestions on grids or toolkits?

• Any good GUI tool to easily create stored procs SQL server 2008 ?

  The templates for stored-procs in SSMS do not auto-populate all input columns, again there is manual work involved. I am looking for something like right-click on table and say CREATE stored-proc, and then it allows to pick a template, based on which it can populate the parameters etc. and give check-box in GUI (like table designer, you can easily add/remove a column). Some support for change management with table undergoing alter or otherwise would also be helpful. Currently we manually write all stored-procs, which i think we should be able to save time and labor with automation. Any suggestion on other free 3rd party tools ?

• Using LinqSql, stored procedure returns datatype image problem

  Hello! I´ve got a problem when using LINQ to execute a stored procedure and return its values. One of the column that the stored procedure returns is of datatype image and contains a pdf in binary form.(this because the database is deployed on sql server 2000, otherwised i would choose a blob) When including the stored procedure in my linq class its generates that my pdf columns is datatype int in the designer class. I´ve work around the problem and manually changed the datatype in representation of the stored procedure in the designer class. But when adding/removing items in the linq class the designer file re-generates and my changes are lost. Are there any better solution for my problem??

• View bound to paged collection view not updating all of the time.

  I new to silverlight and trying to make a business application using the mvvm pattern and ria services. I have a view model class that contains a PagedCollectoinView and it is set to the item source of a datagrid. When I update the PagedCollectionView the datagrid is only updated the first time then after that subsequent changes to the data to not reflect in the view until after another edit. Things seem to be delayed one edit. Below is a summarized example of my xaml and code behind.   Hi, I have a table with 6 columns containing HTML content with some markups in it and now when moving to a new designed site most of this HTML code has to be deleted. More or less all tags except and . Is there a nice way of doing this, identify all tags end delete them within the data? I'm sure there are no < symbols in the test so a regular expression would maybe work? • Managing important runtime business logic with regard to a codebase

  I'm working on a project which will end up have a lot of application information stored in the form of records in a database. In this case, it's the configuration of data views: which grid columns to show/hide default filters to apply to each grid view column titles sorting subtotaling ... This information is a big part of the value of the application and is essential to it's function. The data will be altered by admins a fair amount, so it's not static and it wouldn't be appropriate to have to deploy a new version of the app every time the data changes. The question is, Where should this data be stored? It will definitely live in the database because that's how it's accessed, but I feel like it needs to also be kept with the version controlled codebase because it's an integral part of functioning of the application. Has anyone dealt with an issue like this before? What did you end up doing?

  Hi, i'm using NHibernate with Sdf database. In my hibernate.cfg.xml file i've set: <property name="hbm2ddl.auto" value="update"/> But this does not seem to work at all. "Update" attribute should make NHibernate generate missing tables and columns during application launch, but it does not happen. If i want missing tables geenrated I have to set hbm2dll.auto property to "create" which is not an option for me since it drops existing db content beforehand. I experienced the same problem with PostgreSql problem. Am I missing something?

  I have a DataGridView in a VB.NET app that I have limited to cell selection only. The control has two columns, the first is not editable, the second is editable. I have a ContextMenuStrip that provides some additional functionality and I am able to make it appear when an editable cell receives a right click and is not in edit mode. Based on an example in a Microsoft forum, I am able to now show the context menu when an editable cell receives a right click while also in edit mode. Now I have a little challenge: I have to pre-process data to show my Waterfall Chart properly. I have to do it before my grid is show. • Google analytics-style custom report builder UI

  I'm looking for a reporting engine/UI that can be integrated into a product, which has a UI along the lines of Google Analytics' Custom Reports builder. Is anyone aware of such a thing? The data is in our case is not page views/visitors/etc, but is similar in nature, in that there are limited entities or types of data, but each entity has many attributes/columns and many different ways of aggregating data (or in GA-style speak, metrics and dimensions). The analytics-style UI is very intuitive and allows many reports to be created in powerful ways, without having to know SQL. I have preference for a web-based tool (seeing that it is 2010 and this is a web app -- I mention only because it seems the vast majority of reporting tools still have only a non-web-based creation tool).

Right now, I make two trips to the server: one for getting the records, and the other for counting the total number of records. What is/are the best way(s) to combine these queries to avoid multiple DB trips?
