• Loading Fact Table + Lookup / UnionAll for SK lookups.

  I got to populate FactTable with 12 lookups to dimension table to get SK's, of which 6 are to different Dim Tables and rest 6 are lookup to same DimTable (type II) doing lookup to same natural key. Ex: PrimeObjectID = lookup to DimObject.ObjectID = get ObjectSK and got other columns which does same OtherObjectID1 = lookup to DimObject.ObjectID = get ObjectSK OtherObjectID2 = lookup to DimObject.ObjectID = get ObjectSK OtherObjectID3 = lookup to DimObject.ObjectID = get ObjectSK OtherObjectID4 = lookup to DimObject.ObjectID = get ObjectSK OtherObjectID5 = lookup to DimObject.ObjectID = get ObjectSK for such multiple lookup how should go in my SSIS package. for now am using lookup / unionall foreach lookup. Is there a better way to this.

  Hi: I have three tables: Suppliers, Parts and Types. I need to join all of them while discriminating columns with the same name (say, "id") in the three tables. I would like to successfully run this query: CREATE VIEW Everything AS SELECT Suppliers.name as supplier, Parts.id, Parts.description, Types.typedesc as type FROM Suppliers JOIN (Parts JOIN Types ON Parts.type_id = Types.id) ON Suppliers.id = Parts.supplier_id; My DBMS (sqlite) complains that "there is not such a column (Parts.id)". I guess it forgets table names once the JOIN is done but then how can I refer to the column id that belongs to the table Parts?

  Hi! We're drawing up the database structure with the help of mySQL Workbench for a new app and the number of joins required to make a listing of the data is increasing drastically as the many-to-many relationships increases. The questions: Is it really that bad to merge tables where needed and thereby reducing joins? Is there a better way then pivot tables to take care of many-to-many relationships? We discussed about instead storing all data in serialized text columns and having the application make the sorting instead of the database, but this seems like a very bad idea, even though that the database will be heavily cached. What do you think? Thanks!

  I have an Oracle function that dynamically creates an XML document, and returns it in a SYS.XMLTYPE value. I want to run a query from SQL Developer that calls that function and prints the document (either via a select, or dbms_output - I don't care). But all the examples/documentation seem to refer to querying XML columns in tables, and I can't seem to get the syntax right for my particular usage. I'd like something like this: declare x SYS.XMLTYPE; begin x := my_package.my_function(); select x.getclobval() from x; -- doesn't work! end; How can I print out the value of the XML type variable 'x' in the above code?

• problem with parsing string from excel file

  hi, i have ruby code to parse data in excel file using Parseexcel gem. I need to save 2 columns in that file into a Hash, here is my code: worksheet.each { |row| if row != nil key = row.at(1).to_s.strip value = row.at(0).to_s.strip if !parts.has_key?(key) and key.length 0 parts[key] = value end end } however it still save duplicate keys into the hash: "020098-10". I checked the excel file at the specified row and found the difference are " 020098-10" and "020098-10". the first one has a leading space while the second doesn't. I dont' understand is it true that .strip function already remove all leading and trailing white space? also when i tried to print out key.length, it gave me these weird number: 020098-10 length 18 020098-10 length 17 which should be 9....

• Flex 4 how to layout spark controls in an html table type way

  I have a group of controls and I want to organize them in a table like fashion. I want 1 row and 6 columns. Col 1,3,4,5,6 should all auto size to the contents and col 2 should take up the remaining available space. When the size of the group changes, only col2 width should change. I also want to be able to set the alignment of each cell. How can I do this in flex 4? I found a reference to mx:constraintColumns but this seems to be used with the canvas and in flex 4 adobe suggests not using canvases. Is there something similar in flex 4? I'm looking for something along the lines of Grid/Grid.ColumnDefinitions in silverlight.

• K&R Exercise 1-21 - Mental incomprehension.

  The "impossible" K&R exercise. "Write a program entab that replaces strings of blanks by the minimum number of tabs and blanks to achieve the same spacing. Use the same tab stops, say every n columns. Should n be a variable or a symbolic parameter?" The problem I'm having is, I'm unsure about how to even do this correctly. I know it's not very explanatory, but that's pretty much the problem here. Most of the examples I've seen have counted a number of blanks, and replaced those series with a tab, but this isn't what its asking, I reckon I understand what its asking, but currently feel unable to do this. Could anyone help :)

• Most optimal order (of joins) for left join

  I have 3 tables Table1 (with 1020690 records), Table2(with 289425 records), Table 3(with 83692 records).I have something like this SELECT * FROM Table1 T1 /* OK fine select * is bad when not all columns are needed, this is just an example*/ LEFT JOIN Table2 T2 ON T1.id=T2.id LEFT JOIN Table3 T3 ON T1.id=T3.id and a query like this SELECT * FROM Table1 T1 LEFT JOIN Table3 T3 ON T1.id=T3.id LEFT JOIN Table2 T2 ON T1.id=T2.id The query plan shows me that it uses 2 Merge Join for both the joins. For the first query, the first merge is with T1 and T2 and then with T3. For the second query, the first merge is with T1 and T3 and then with T2. Both these queries take about the same time(40 seconds approx.) or sometimes Query1 takes couple of seconds longer. So my question is, does the join order matter ?

• Walking a hierarchy table with Linq

  I have a table with two columns, GroupId and ParentId (both are GUIDS). The table forms a hierarchy so I can look for a value in the “GroupId” filed, when I have found it I can look at its ParentId. This ParentId will also appear in the GroupId of a different record. I can use this to walk up the hierarchy tree from any point to the root (root is an empty GUID). What I’d like to do is get a list of records when I know a GroupId. This would be the record with the GroupId and all the parents back to the root record. Is this possible with Linq and if so, can anyone provide a code snippet?

  Hi I have 2 tables A and B with the following columns Table A - id,bId,aName,aVal Table B - id,bName where A.bId is the same as B.id. I want a result set from a query to get A.id, A.aName, B.bName where A.bId=B.id OR A.id, A.aName, "" when A.bId=0. In both cases, only those records should be considered where A.aVal LIKE "aVal" Can someone please help me with the query? I can use left join but how do I get the blank string if bId=0 and B.bName otherwise? Thanks

  What is the most performant way of displaying a table of data in Flex? Are there alternatives to the native Flex Datagrid Component? Alternatives that are noted for their rendering speed? Are there other ways to display a table? I have a datagrid with roughly 70 lines and 7 columns of simple text data. This is currently created and loaded in memory. This is being refreshed rapidly (about 800 msec) and there is a slight lag in other animations when it is rendering the table... So I am trying to cut down this render time.

  I ran into an issue by introducing floating point columns in the MySQL database schema that the comparisons on floating point values don't return the correct results always. 1 - 50.12 2 - 34.57 3 - 12.75 4 - ...(rest all less than 12.00) SELECT COUNT(*) FROM `users` WHERE `points` > "12.75" This returns me "3". I have read that the comparisons of floating point values in MySQL is a bad idea and decimal type is the better option. Do I have any hope of moving ahead with the float type and get the comparisons to work correctly?

  Hi, I have a database with lets assume two columns (service_date & invoice_amount). I would like to create an SQL query that would retrieve and group the data for each financial year (July to June). I have two years of data so that is two financial years (i.e. 2 results). I know I can do this manually by creating an SQL query to group by month then run the data through PHP to create the financial year data but I'd rather have an SQL query. All ideas welcome. Thanks

• Button in Update Panel doing full postback?

The list is a global variable, and on page_load I set that to the gridview's datasource and databind it. However, anytime I click the 'add a user' button, or the button to remove the user from the list. I tried putting the gvAssociatedUser.Datasource = associatedFaculty and the line below inside the Page.IsPostBack check, that prevented the page from working. I tried every combination of settings of the update panel for ChildrenAsTriggers and UpdateMode, and none of them worked. I know this is something simple, but all the combinations I've tried won't get it to work. How can I make this thing work?

  Hi, Should be simple but I couldn't find the answer, I would like to place components horizontally instead of vertically. What I'm trying to achieve is a rich:toolbar with 2 or more rows. I've been trying to do that with a toolbar that has a panelgrid and two panelgroups like this: <rich:toolbar...> <f:panelgrid columns="1"...> <f:panelgroup id="row1" .../> <-- Should be horizontal placement <f:panelgroup id="row2" .../> <-- Should be horizontal placement <f:panelgrid/> <rich:toolbar/> So how do I make the panelgroup layout horizontal (Or should I use something else?)   I have a user model and a role model with a has_and_belongs_to_many reliationship. The join table is roles_users (two columns - the PK of the user and the role) and has no corresponding model. I want to have a method that returns all users with a given role. In SQL that'd be something like SELECT u.id FROM role.r, roles_users ru WHERE r.role_id = #{role.id} AND r.role_id = ru.role_id I see that Rails' activerecord has a find_by_sql method, but it's only expecting one results to be returned. What is the "Rails Way" to give me a list of users with a given role e.g. def self.find_users_with_role(role) users = [] users << # Some ActiveRecord magic or custom code here..? end

  I have a few webcombo boxes that are hierachial: Continent Country When the form loads everything works fine, when I change the continent the first time, the country repopulates correctly. However if I change the continent a second time I receive an error: Specified argument was out of the range of valid values.Parameter name: The DataValueField of ValueField was not found in the Columns collection. Can anyone tell me why? P.S. If user 1 is friend of user 2 then the next rows are inserted into FRIEND_LIST 1,2 2,1 I want to get the friends and friends of friends of an specific user. The select should return columns a, b, c. a: user_id b: friend_id c: username (username of friend_id ) If 1 is friend of 2 and 3. 2 is friend of 3, 4 and 5 3 is friend of 5,6,7 Then the query to get 1's friends and friends of friends should return: 1 2 two 1 3 three 2 1 one 2 3 three 2 4 four 2 5 five 3 1 one 3 5 five 3 6 six 3 7 seven Can I get this rows with a single query?

  Is there a way to query the creation date of a table in SQLite? I am new to SQL, overall. I just found this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1171019/sql-server-table-creation-date-query. I am assuming that sqlite_master is the equivalent to sys.tables in SQLite. Is that correct? But then my sqlite_master table only has the columns "type", "name", "tbl_name", "rootpage" and "sql". If this is not possible in SQLite, what would be the best way to implement this functionality by myself?

• What is the cost in bytes for the overhead of a sql_variant column in SQL Server?

  I have a table, which contains many columns of float data type with 15 digit precision. Each column consumes 8 bytes of storage. Most of the time the data does not require this amount of precision and could be stored as a real data type. In many cases the value can be 0, in which case I could get away with storing a single byte. My goal here is to optimize space storage requirements, which is an issue I am facing working with a SQL Express 4GB database size limit. If byte, real and float data types are stored in a sql_variant column there is obviously some overhead involved in storing these values. What is the cost of this overhead? I would then need to evaluate whether I would actually end up in significant space savings (or not) switching to using sql_variant column data types. Thanks, Elan

  Hello I have a MySQL database that I replicate from another server. The database contains a table with this columns ID, FileName and FileSize In the table there are more than 4'000'000 records. I want to make fast a search in FileName (varchar) column I found that I can use for this Sphinx search engine. The problem is that I want to restrict searches by filetype. Do I have to and how (trigers?) to extract file extensions for all rows? May be I have to create another table (because this one is replicated) and join them in 1:1 relation? Can you give me some advices please :)
