• Winlogon Application Error [closed]

  This error is happening to 6 out of 32 computers. I have created a base image from scratch using Ghost Enterprise, but error still shows on the same machines. It happens at the log on prompt and after doing a soft reset the message goes away, but it comes back eventually. -Error message- The Instruction at "0X74eF400e" referenced Memory at "0X00000000" The memory could not be "Written". Winlogon.exe - Application Error Any reason why this is happening? I have tried to run a memTest but everything shows okay.

  I ran this command on the server that has the share of code that my local IIS site set to (Via UNC to that share): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320268 Drive:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\caspol.exe -m -ag 1 -url "file:////\\computername\sharename\*" FullTrust -exclusive on (obviously I replaced Drive with C, and the actual computername and sharename with the one I'm sharing out). But when I run the ASP.NET site, I am still getting this runtime exception: Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file.   How can I find out which keyboard shortcuts are defined inside the Start menu? And what shortcuts they are assigned to? Platform: Windows XP SP2 64 bit. Example: I open my main Visual Studio solution with a shortcut key, Ctrl+Alt+M. This is setup by having a shortcut inside the Start menu with: Target: "D:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" D:\dproj\MSQall\MSQuant\MSQuant.sln Shortcut key: Ctrl+ALT+M If a new shortcut is added and its shortcut key is also set to Ctrl+Alt+M then there are now two shortcuts with the same shortcut key (conflict). To prevent this it would be nice to know which shortcut keys are already assigned and to which shortcuts.

  I'd like to be able to have the windows 7 start menu link to folders and not link to the stupid libraries. • Burn Image context menu item missing in Windows 7

  My understanding is that in Windows 7 if I right click an ISO image I should have an option Burn Image, or if I double click an ISO I should get a dialog to let me burn the image.... Not happening for me, any idea's why? Edit: 29th April. I do have isoburn.exe in my system32 directory, and it works just fine if I launch it manually from cmd. However I simply do not have the context menu when I right click on a iso file. So my more specific question is, does anyone know how to simply restore this context menu item, an entry in the registry perhaps? (but where and what)

  I am trying to install Windows XP Mode from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx (the Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool has given me the green for proceeding) Even though my Windows has been activated a year or so ago, the download button leads me to a splash screen saying "Windows validation required". I am next forced to download a WindowsActivationUpdate.exe which, after downloading some mysterious "update", fails with the error message "Update installation failed, error information 0x80070002" (rough translation from German). I've tried running it both normally and as Administrator. What could be the problem?

• users unable to add registry keys to HKCU

  I may not have this 100% correct so need some clarification. Are normal users on a 2003 terminal server allowed to add registry keys the their own HKCU section in the registry, or are they only allowed to edit existing ones? The reason I ask is that we have 3 keys that we need to add for each user on login. I thought it would be as simple as having a straightforward batchscript run that silently adds the keys for the user. Here is what I used: regedit.exe "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\example.reg" When the user runs this batch scipt, they see nothing as you would expect, but the keys are not added. If I simply run the .reg file as the user, it asks if I want to add the key, but then has an error saying there was an error accessing the registry. Do I need something a bit more complex to accomplish this task.   I discovered this when I tried to use EasyBCD to well, edit by bcd, but it said "The current file is in use and cannot be opened by EasyBCD..." • ssh crashes connecting using host names on windows

  On a new install of Windows Server 2008, I attempting to use ssh to connect to another host. I have installed putty/openssh. This works without a problem when trying a command such as: ssh 192.168.0.2 However, this will crash when trying something like: ssh testserver with the error as follows in the windows event viewer: Faulting application ssh.exe, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x40843497, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791a76d, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0004bbb8, process id 0xe94, application start time 0x01cb873195e795d5. • Why do Windows 7 & 8 have different default behaviour when trying to modify contents of protected folder

  Here's the situation: I have a Windows 7 PC and a Windows 8 PC and I'm logged in as the same domain user on both machines. My domain user is in the local Administrator group on both. When I run cmd.exe on each machine and then attempt to do this (also on both machines) mkdir "c:\Program Files\cheese" the Windows 8 PC gives an "Access Denied" error, while it works fine on the Windows 7 PC. I understand that C:\Program Files is a protected folder and I'm not interested in a debate on the morals of writing to such a folder directly. But I am interested in understanding what exactly has changed in Windows 8 to cause this. I don't seem to be able to find anything that acknowledges or explains this change in behaviour in Windows 8.

  I am creating a custom boot disk for work using Windows PE 3.0. I need to be able to tell what drive the system was booted from. it may be a CD, or a USB Flash drive. In the past, I have looked for a file on the root of the drive that holds some of our custom configuration. however that is getting a bit messy. Basically, in addition to Windows PE, the drive or disk also has other scripts and tools. I need to remount that USB drive or DVD to the U:\ Drive, to keep thing consistent. Basically, Diskpart.exe Select Volume $X assign Letter=U Exit I just need to figure out how to determine that nasty little $X.

• Large .tmp files in C:\Windows\Temp

  I have a Windows 2008 server which functions as a web service server, and every other week or so, the C:\Windows\Temp folder is filled with large (between 40-300 meg) files with names like: ~DF5D73.tmp, ~DFA95.tmp, etc. They appear My webservices on the server don't create any files with that type of name, and the contents don't appear to help identify them. Process Explorer indicates that w3wp.exe is currently using several of the files, but I can't imagine specifically where they're coming from. I took the fault module (hostv32.dll) and scanned it with avast but it found no threat. I also ran a SFC /scannow from an elevated command prompt and it didn't find any corrupted files. This problem is in all two user accounts in this computer (Windows 7). There was one time where task manager seemed to work, but when I closed it and opened it again, it crashed. Any reason/solution to this problem?

• OpenSCAD keeps crashing when I raise my precision past $fn=29?

  Out of the blue, OpenSCAD decided to stop working for me on designs that previously rendered just fine. After playing around I found out that any time I use a precision greater than $fn=29 the program crashes with the message "openscad.exe has stopped working". I can use any precision 29 and below, but the second I adjust it to even 30 the program crashes. This is a major problem as before I was using a precision of 100, and without it the design's moving parts do not work on print. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program several times and haven't been able to fix the problem. I have watched the CPU during the calculations and it never reaches more than 35%. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this problem? I also have not changed computers or even the code. Thanks! I am using Windows 32 bit, Version 2013.06. The default version from the website.

  I use firefox as my default browser. IE and chrome are used as secondary browsers. Apart from these, i need to have a alternate browser. I tried opera, but when installing it, opera automatically imported all my bookmarks and other profile data from firefox folder. I really had a hard time safely deleting these files that opera made a copy, without harming the original files which firefox uses. I don't want this to happen. Here's the situation: Now, i want to install other browser or re install opera. How do i make the firefox profile folder to be accessed only by firefox.exe and me(the administrator)? Can this be done via security tab under folder properties?

  How to access Windows Registry from DOS? I need to access registry from DOS, while I boot from DOS bootable disk. I've searched all the internet, and found only Offline NT Password and Registry Editor, which can not be used in DOS, as I understand. Also I've found RegView (from many mirrors), which isn't working too (I've tried many instructions). Is there any easy-in-usage tool, like reg.exe, which is able to load registry hives, so that I can change registry values?? Or any working instructions ?? Note: I already have a bootable drive, which can read/write to NTFS drives. Thanks in advance!

• How can I make Windows Media Player ignore global hotkeys in Windows 7?

  I have Windows 7 and a Logitech G15 keyboard. One of the programs with the Logitech G15 allows you to control media players such as Winamp with the playback keys on the keyboard. Problem I'm having is that, even though I have told this program to not control Windows Media Player, every time I use it to pause Winamp, it then hits plays (or unpauses) Windows Media Player. Even more annoying given that Windows Media Player isn't even running as an active GUI program and instead as a background process, so I hear the sound of whatever the last video it was I playing. If I end-task wmplayer.exe it spins right back up but at least now it has no knowledge of a video to play, but this is annoying. How can I either a) Have Windows Media Player in Windows 7 completely unload when I close it, or b) Have Windows Media Player in Windows 7 ignore any sort of global hotkeys?

  I have the same problem with this topic! How to resolve BackgroundContainer.dll error on startup? The thing is i did everything that says in answer but i)I found nothing when i started regedit.exe and searched (F3 or CTRL+F) for BackgroundContainer.dll ii)I made a full scan with AntiVirus Scanner like Microsoft Security Essentials/ Defender and also i scaned my PC with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware,but i found nothing. • How can I create a pen drive that I can boot from, and then install Win98 from?

  I have a HP Compaq t5515 thin client computer with a flash disk and USB port. I want to put Win98 onto it, replacing whatever is on there now (I think it is some Linux-based thing). I can find stuff about putting Win98 onto a pen drive and running from that, but I can't find any info about installing Windows 98 from a pen drive onto a sep[arate system. Is it just a matter of making the pen drive bootable to DOS copying the contents of a Win98 installation CD onto the pen drive booting the HP machine from the pen drive running SETUP.EXE from the pen drive? Any pointers appreciated. TIA

• reg delete gives me "access is denied" but regedit delete is ok

  I need to delete a key from a command line. So I wanted to use reg delete "the key to be deleted" /f but I get ERROR: access is denied. From the same login session (the same user) I am able to delete the key without any troubles from regedit.exe that is not run as administrator. I cannot use runas command to execute reg that I believe would be to solution because in fact I want to use reg to delete registry entry for administrator profile so runas works again.   I have recurring BSODs that really have me scratching my head. Here's a look at the errors: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT 0x1A (ntoskrnl.exe) - I've seen this 9 times since April 2012 NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM 0x24 (Ntfs.sys) - this one's new, happend 4 days ago BAD_POOL_HEADER 0x19 (win32k.sys) - also new, happened 7 days ago My system specs: Intel Core i5 2500K @ 3.30GHz ASUS Sabertooth P67 Motherboard (Rev 2) * RMA'd my Rev 1 due to recall 16GB (4 x 4GB) Kingston HyperX 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM 2 x 640GB Western Digital Caviar Black 64MB SATA HDD EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTS450 1GB PCI-E 2.0 Graphics Card I've got Windows 7 Home Premium and it's completely patched. I'm also running Microsoft Security Essentials, which is up-to-date and always present. I've run MemTest86+ from a USB drive for up to nine hours, giving my RAM a total of 6 passes, and it didn't detect a single error. I've used chkdsk in Windows 7 to scan the C:/ drive on boot (twice) and it found no problems. How can I find out what's causing all these blue screens?

• How do I circumvent Spotify's updater for my regular users in Windows?

  I run a Windows Vista machine where I have Spotify installed. My account is the only account with administrator rights on the machine, which means only I can update Spotify. This means that any other user on the machine won't be able to run Spotify if there is an update that I haven't installed. Is there any way to circumvent this? EDIT: I tried setting up a task in the Task Scheduler to start spotify.exe with administrative rights any time someone logged in, which I hoped would allow an update, but it didn't, so I'm open to new suggestions.

• Windows 7 taskbar items not grouping properly

  I don't understand the Windows 7 taskbar behaviour. For some programs it will not group the running instances, or will groups some of them but not all. I have set taskbar items to "always combine", but this has not helped. It seems to possibly be two issues: with an app that has a different taskbar icon when running than for its launcher; and for VisualStudio, when starting by double clicking a project it groups separately from when starting the IDE from the .exe. Is there any way to force the items to combine? I quite like the Win7 taskbar, and would like it to work consistently...
