• Can I encrypt value in C# and use that with SQL Server 2005 symmetric encryption?

  To be more specific, if I create a symmetric key with a specific KEY_SOURCE and ALGORITHM (as described here), is there any way that I can set up the same key and algorithm in C# so that I can encrypt data in code, but have that data decrypted by the symmetric key in Sql Server? From the research I've done so far, it seems that the IDENTITY_VALUE for the key is also baked into the cypher text, making things even more complex. I'm thinking about just trying all the various ways I can think of, ie hashing the KEY_SOURCE using different hash algorithms for a key and trying different ways of encrypting the plain text until I get something that works. Or is that just futile? Has anyone else done this, any pointers? UPDATE Just to clarify, I want to use NHibernate on the client side, but theres a bunch of stored procedures on the database side that still perform decryption.

• Good learning resources for JNDI implementation (JBoss 5)

  I have been working with JavaEE/EJB3 web apps for about half a year now. Until recently, I haven't had to touch a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff, just the meat of the code. I have been wrestling with JNDI problems, and though I've solved a couple of them, I'm pretty much just doing the whole cargo cult copy-paste routine. It would really help me to better understand JNDI; my understanding of it right now can be summarized as "it's that thing these classes sometimes do to find other classes." My question is, has anyone had success learning JNDI/EJB3/related topics from a book or online content? I've googled for it but the stuff that comes up is old or specific to a certain framework I'm not using. I'm looking for something that's either JBoss-specific or generic enough to be useful anyway.

  I am weak in SQL and need some help working through some logic with my proc. Three pieces: store procedure, table1, table2 Table 1 stores most recent data for specific IDs Customer_id status_dte status_cde app_dte 001 2010-04-19 Y 2010-04-19 Table 2 stores history of data for specific customer IDs: For example: Log_id customer_Id status_dte status_cde 01 001 2010-04-20 N 02 001 2010-04-19 Y 03 001 2010-04-19 N 04 001 2010-04-19 Y The stored proecure currently throws an error if the status date from table1 is < than app_date in table1. If @status_dte < app_date Error Note: @status_dte is a variable stored as the status_dte from table1 However, I want it to throw an error when the EARLIEST status_dte from table 2 with a status_cde of 'Y' is less than the app_dte column in table 1. Keep in mind that this earliest date is not stored anywhere, the history of data changes per customer. Another customer might have the following history. • Handling Custom Protocols

  I'm looking to respond to an event from a web browser, hopefully any web browser. I'm working solely on windows and I came to the conclusion a custom protocol (I.E. myprot://collection/of/strings) is the best approach here (any objections?). But, handling an instance of this protocol seems to be a little less straight-forward. All I need is that collection of strings auto-magically passed to my already running application! (the app will only respond to these links while in a specific waiting state) So answer me this, if you can, Whats the 'popular' method of handling them or better yet Whats the 'best' (subjective - I know) way to do it? Although your answers don't need to be specific to my language, I am using Delphi for development. Thanks!

  I'm developing an ActiveX EXE that exposes an specific class to a third-party software. This third-party software instanciates an object of this class and uses its methods. Strangely, this third-party software destroys its object of my exposed class as soon as it calls an specific method, but I have no idea why this happens. The only clue I have is that this method is the only one that returns a value. All the other ones are simple 'subs' that do not return any value, and when they are called nothing wrong happens. I'm using VB6. Do you guys have any idea of why it's happening?

• Passing single attributes to associated factories

  I'm looking for a way to pass fields into the factories of associated models without having to explicitly call the factory itself. For example, lets say I have some factories like so: Factory.define :person do |person| person.name "Default Bob" person.sex "M" person.house {|p| p.association(:house)} end Factory.define :house do |house| house.color "Red" house.has_ac true house.suburb {|h| h.association(:suburb)} end Factory.define :suburb do |suburb| suburb.name "Little boxes" end This is fine and all, but if I want to use factories to create someone in a specific house in a specific suburb I have do this: sub = Factory(:suburb, :name => "Blue town") house = Factory(:house, :color => "Blue", :suburb => sub) person = Factory(:person, :name => "Bill", :house => house) While this isn't bad in this small case, my actual models sometimes have 7 or 8 associations, and when I want to create an object whose associations I only care about a single attribute, the code for this starts to get really heavy. Is there somewhat I can pass attributes to nested Factories without having to recall the Factory itself?

• New hire expectations... (Am I being unreasonable?)

  I work for a very small custom software shop. We currently consist me and my boss. My boss is an old FoxPro DOS developer and OOP makes him uncomfortable. He is planning on taking a back seat in the next few years to hopefully enjoy a “partial retirement”. I will be taking over the day to day operations and we are now desperately looking for more help. We tried Monster.com, Dice.com, and others a few years ago when we started our search. We had no success. We have tried outsourcing overseas (total disaster), hiring kids right out of college (mostly a disaster but that’s where I came from), interns (good for them, not so good for us) and hiring laid off “experienced” developers (there was a reason they were laid off). I have heard hiring practices discussed on podcasts, blogs, etc... and have tried a few. The “Fizz Buzz” test was a good one. One kid looked physically ill before he finally gave up. I think my problem is that I have grown so much as a developer since I started here that I now have a high standard. I hear/read very intelligent people podcasts and blogs and I know that there are lots of people out there that can do the job. I don’t want to settle for less than a “good” developer. Perhaps my expectations are unreasonable. I expect any good developer (entry level or experienced) to be billable (at least paying their own wage) in under one month. I expect any good developer to be able to be productive (at least dangerous) in any language or technology with only a few days of research/training. I expect any good developer to be able to take a project from initial customer request to completion with little or no help from others. Am I being unreasonable? What constitutes a valuable developer? What should be expected of an entry level developer? What should be expected of an experienced developer? I realize that everyone is different but there has to be some sort of expectations standard, right? I have been giving the test project below to potential canidates to weed them out. Good idea? Too much? Too little? Please let me know what you think. Thanks.   Hi All I was wondering if someone knows a way to invoke a specific maven module build from IntelliJ that will also build ( or use already compiled classes ) from depended modules. So for instance if I would like to build the module "Model" in the picture and only it , it seems reasonable for me to click the package step on it. But what is actually does it invokes the mvn package step inside this specific module rather than "mvn -am -pl module-name" from the root module , which also builds all the dependencies. So is there something that I just don't know ?

  Inside of a phase listener class that runs during the "RESTORE_VIEW" phase, I have some code like this: public void afterPhase(PhaseEvent event) { FacesContext fc = event.getFacesContext(); NavigationHandler nh = fc.getApplication().getNavigationHandler(); nh.handleNavigation(fc, null, "/a/specific/path/to/a/resource.jspx"); } Navigation to the new URL doesn't work here. The request made will just receive a response from the original JSPX that was navigated to. Code like this works fine: public void afterPhase(PhaseEvent event) { FacesContext fc = event.getFacesContext(); NavigationHandler nh = fc.getApplication().getNavigationHandler(); nh.handleNavigation(fc, null, "OUTCOME_DEFINED_IN_FACES_CONFIG_XML"); } Also the first snippet will work with an IceFaces Faces provider, but not Sun JSF 1.2 which is what I need to use. • Best library to parse HTML with Python 3 and example?

I need to parse some HTML, to essentially extra values between specific HTML tags and am confused at my array of options, and everything I find is suited for Python 2.x. I've read raves about Beautiful Soup, HTML5Lib and lxml, but I cannot figure out how to install any of these on Windows. Questions: What HTML parser do you recommend? How do I install it? • Are there any widely-agreed upon guidelines for rating your language knowledge on a scale?

  The question was imagined after a co-worker was complaining for an hour about some guy who could not answer basic Java questions on an interview after self-identifying himself as "8 out of 10" on Java. While that was an obvious fib, I personally always had major trouble defining my specific language skills on a sliding scale unless I'm given specific guidelines (remember 40 standard libraries by heart? Able to solve 10 random Project Euler problems in <30 mins each? Can write implementation of A, B and C data-structures from scratch in 30 mins? Know 30% of standard? Can answer 50% of questions on StackOverflow pertaining to the language?) So, I was wondering - is there some sort of commonly accepted methodology for translating such tangible benchmarks into "rate yourself on a language between 1-10"? "Kernighan gets an A, God gets a B, everyone else gets C and less" type jokes are not helpful :)

• How many address fields would you use for a UK database?

  Address records are probably used in most database, but I've seen a number of slightly different sets of fields used to store them. The number of fields seems to vary from 3-7, and sometimes all fields are simple labelled address1..addressN, other times given specific meaning (town, city, etc). This is UK specific, though I'm open to comments about the rest of the world too. Here you need the first line of the address (actually just the number) and the post code to identify the address - everything else is mostly an added bonus. I'm currently favouring: Address 1 Address 2 Address 3 Town County Post Code We could add Country if we ever needed it (unlikely). What do you think? Is this too little, too much?

  I have a default properties file, and some deployment specific properties files that override certain settings from the default, based on deployment environment. I would like my Ant build script to merge the two properties files (overwriting default values with deployment specific values), and then output the resulting properties to a new file. • SQL - Two foreign keys that have a dependency between them

  The current structure is as follows: Table RowType: RowTypeID Table RowSubType: RowSubTypeID FK_RowTypeID Table ColumnDef: FK_RowTypeID FK_RowSubTypeID (nullable) In short, I'm mapping column definitions to rows. In some cases, those rows have subtype(s), which will have column definitions specific to them. Alternatively, I could hang those column definitions that are specific to subtypes off their own table, or I could combine the data in RowType and RowSubType into one table and work with a single ID, but I'm not sure either is a better solution (if anything, I'd lean towards the latter, as we mostly end up pulling ColumnDefs for a given RowType/RowSubType). Is the current design SQL Blasphemy? If I keep the current structuree, how do I maintain that if RowSubTypeID is specified in ColumnDef, that it must correspond to the RowType specified by RowTypeID? Should I try to enforce this with a trigger or am I missing a simple redesign that would solve the problem?

• jQuery: Self Executing Plugin?

  I am working on expansion of my jQuery plug-in authoring knowledge, just playing around with my own ideas for learning benefits. So i was wondering how you guys tackle the need of plugin executing without any user specific input. So I have a need for plug-in that executes right away after document is ready, without any user's specific input just as long as doc is loaded, so the only way I see how to execute plug-in on it's own is to attach handler to ready listener that executes my function which I extended the jQuery with. And because this needs to be self enclosed, part of the code, I attach handler to event listener within the function. So how else could one tackle this? Any take at this is appreciated.   How can I select all elements within an HTML document with a specific class and specific element type? I'm trying to select all anchors with the class title loggedin from an HTML document (and then open them within the browser). These are within parragraphs with the class title. They are leafs in the following DOM tree: + body + div class='content' + div id='siteTable' class='sitetable linklisting' + div class='thing id-t3_xxxx xxx xxx link' + div class='entry unvoted' + p class='title' + a class='title loggedin ' Where x indicates variable content. (I'm looking to do this in raw JavaScript, ie, not in jQuery.)

• On site load, how do you wrap all images in a link dynamically using Javascript?

  I have barely any experience working with DOM and using Javascript, and I have a very specific task that I'm trying to accomplish. Let's say I have an image in my HTML: <img src="foo.jpg" /> When the site loads, I want to take that image (all images in the document, actually), and wrap them in a link: <a href="http://www.foobar.com"><img src="foo.jpg" /></a> What could I use to accomplish this? Google hasn't turned up much for me with regards to this specific task. On load, I can access and iterate all the images in the document... but I'm not sure where to go from there in order to wrap the image in a link.

• translating specifications into query predicates

  I'm trying to find a nice and elegant way to query database content based on DDD "specifications". In domain driven design, a specification is used to check if some object, also known as the candidate, is compliant to a (domain specific) requirement. For example, the specification 'IsTaskDone' goes like: class IsTaskDone extends Specification<Task> { boolean isSatisfiedBy(Task candidate) { return candidate.isDone(); } } The above specification can be used for many purposes, e.g. it can be used to validate if a task has been completed, or to filter all completed tasks from a collection. However, I want to re-use this, nice, domain related specification to query on the database. Of course, the easiest solution would be to retrieve all entities of our desired type from the database, and filter that list in-memory by looping and removing non-matching entities. But clearly that would not be optimal for performance, especially when the entity count in our db increases. Proposal So my idea is to create a 'ConversionManager' that translates my specification into a persistence technique specific criteria, think of the JPA predicate class. The services looks as follows: public interface JpaSpecificationConversionManager { <T> Predicate getPredicateFor(Specification<T> specification, Root<T> root, CriteriaQuery<?> cq, CriteriaBuilder cb); JpaSpecificationConversionManager registerConverter(JpaSpecificationConverter<?, ?> converter); } By using our manager, the users can register their own conversion logic, isolating the domain related specification from persistence specific logic. To minimize the configuration of our manager, I want to use annotations on my converter classes, allowing the manager to automatically register those converters. JPA repository implementations could then use my manager, via dependency injection, to offer a find by specification method. Providing a find by specification should drastically reduce the number of methods on our repository interface. In theory, this all sounds decent, but I feel like I'm missing something critical. What do you guys think of my proposal, does it comply to the DDD way of thinking? Or is there already a framework that does something identical to what I just described?
