  • Will TSQL become useless because of new ORMs? [closed]

    By introducing LINQ to SQL, I found myself and my .NET developer colleagues gradually moving from TSQL to C# to create queries on the database. Entity Framework made that shift almost permanent. Now it's nearly 2 years that I use LINQ to SQL and LINQ to Entities and haven't used TSQL that much. Yesterday, a colleague encountered a problem (he had to create a SP) and we went to help him. But we all found that our TSQL knowledge was diminished for sure, and a simple SP that seemed trivial to us 2 or 3 years ago, was a challenge to be solved yesterday. Thus it came to my mind that while TSQL's life is attached to SQL Server, and logically as long as SQL Server lives and doesn't change it's SQL language, TSQL would also live, practically it might die, and soon very few people might know it. Am I right? Do existence of ORMs like Entity Framework threaten TSQL's life and usability?

  • Web Frameworks caring about persistence?

    I have noticed that Play! Framework encompasses persistence strategy (like JPA etc...) Why would a web framework care about persistence ?! Indeed, this would be the job of the server-sides components (like EJB etc...), wouldn't this? Otherwise, client would be too coupled with server's business logic. UPDATE: One answer would be : it's more likely used for simple application including itself the whole business logics. However, for large applications with well-designed layers(services, domain, DAO's etc..), persistence is not recommended within web client layer since there would be several different web(or not) clients.

  • Slideshows in elastic or fluid layouts?

    Hi folks, I'm building a new WordPress TwentyTen child theme using the ElastiCSS framework ( http://elasticss.com/ ) and am trying to figure out the best way of using some sort of dynamic content slideshow. What is the best way to implement a slideshow in a fluid or elastic layout such that it remains proportional to the other items in the content area? Should I even bother trying to obtain that? Or should I use like four different sizes in conjunction with something like the Less framework ( http://lessframework.com/ )? Thanks!   • I need recommendations on free, open source, PHP-based business intelligence widget frameworks [on hold]

    I'm a PHP developer on Linux, and my manager wants a business intelligence dashboard. He wants to see in real-time our profit/loss stuff in fancy charts, based on our software sales. I could code it all from scratch and use Google Charts API or some other charts API to help me. However, I wanted to know if there was a free, open source, PHP-based business intelligence package out there, or some sort of widget framework that I could start with. That way, I can build the BI widgets inside that framework and not have to do everything from scratch. I apologize ahead of time if this is the wrong stackexchange where to place this query. A quick Googling turns up Rusher. Has anyone heard of this / does anyone use it? If there are no popular ones, then why not? Is it too difficult to make something like this reusable, and they need heavy customization? In my own implementation I found a lot of boilerplate that could be shoved into a framework.

  • Any good web frameworks for asynchronous multiplayer games?

    I'm trying to craft a site for web-based (original) board games, and my client (currently written in Actionscript, but that's highly fungible) works fine - I can play solitaire games in the client - but it has nothing to connect to. What I'm looking for is a server framework for handling accounts/authentication and game tracking: something that would let players log in, show them a list of their current games, let them invite friends to new games, let them make moves in the games they have open, etc. I'm flexible on language; obviously I'm going to have to write a lot of server code to handle the actual game logic, but that should be straightforward enough. I'm more concerned with how to handle the user (and game) DBs, though suggestions for a good server framework for communicating with the DBs (and serving up, most likely, JSON for client communications) are also welcome. Right now my leaning is towards Ruby (probably with Rails) but as far as I can determine it would be a pretty good chunk of effort to set up the necessary databases, so having something even higher-level would be really useful to me.

  • How should I implement the repository pattern for complex object models?

    Our data model has almost 200 classes that can be separated out into about a dozen functional areas. It would have been nice to use domains, but the separation isn't that clean and we can't change it. We're redesigning our DAL to use Entity Framework and most of the recommendations that I've seen suggest using a Repository pattern. However, none of the samples really deal with complex object models. Some implementations that I've found suggest the use of a repository-per-entity. This seems ridiculous and un-maintainable for large, complex models. Is it really necessary to create a UnitOfWork for each operation, and a Repository for each entity? I could end up with thousands of classes. I know this is unreasonable, but I've found very little guidance implementing Repository, Unit Of Work, and Entity Framework over complex models and realistic business applications.

    I am using Entity Framework as my ORM in an ASP.Net application. I have my database already created so ended up generating the entity model from it. What is a good way to organize files/classes in the data access layer. My entity framework model is in a class library and I was planning on adding additional classes per Entity(i.e per database table) and putting all the queries related to those tables in their respective classes. I am not sure if this is a right approach and if it is then where do the queries requiring data from multiple tables go? Am I completely wrong in organizing my files based on entities/tables and should I organize them based on functional areas instead.

  • How to convert a DataSet object into an ObjectContext (Entity Framework) object on the fly?

    Hi all, I have an existing SQL Server database, where I store data from large specific log files (often 100 MB and more), one per database. After some analysis, the database is deleted again. From the database, I have created both a Entity Framework Model and a DataSet Model via the Visual Studio designers. The DataSet is only for bulk importing data with SqlBulkCopy, after a quite complicated parsing process. All queries are then done using the Entity Framework Model, whose CreateQuery Method is exposed via an interface like this public IQueryable<TTarget> GetResults<TTarget>() where TTarget : EntityObject, new() { return this.Context.CreateQuery<TTarget>(typeof(TTarget).Name); } Now, sometimes my files are very small and in such a case I would like to omit the import into the database, but just have a an in-memory representation of the data, accessible as Entities. The idea is to create the DataSet, but instead of bulk importing, to directly transfer it into an ObjectContext which is accessible via the interface. Does this make sense? Now here's what I have done for this conversion so far: I traverse all tables in the DataSet, convert the single rows into entities of the corresponding type and add them to instantiated object of my typed Entity context class, like so MyEntities context = new MyEntities(); //create new in-memory context ///.... //get the item in the navigations table MyDataSet.NavigationResultRow dataRow = ds.NavigationResult.First(); //here, a foreach would be necessary in a true-world scenario NavigationResult entity = new NavigationResult { Direction = dataRow.Direction, ///... NavigationResultID = dataRow.NavigationResultID }; //convert to entities context.AddToNavigationResult(entity); //add to entities ///.... A very tedious work, as I would need to create a converter for each of my entity type and iterate over each table in the DataSet I have. Beware, if I ever change my database model.... Also, I have found out, that I can only instantiate MyEntities, if I provide a valid connection string to a SQL Server database. Since I do not want to actually write to my fully fledged database each time, this hinders my intentions. I intend to have only some in-memory proxy database. Can I do simpler? Is there some automated way of doing such a conversion, like generating an ObjectContext out of a DataSet object? P.S: I have seen a few questions about unit testing that seem somewhat related, but not quite exact.

    I've just came across Lighting Fast CMS, which seems to be very promising Django based content management system. Documentation seem to be very good, even though it is still in beta stage. It also has very nice buildout based installation. Also core Components of it seem to be nicely decoupled. Does anyone have any experiences with it yet? How much one can customize it with extensions? How's extension development in general compared to Drupal or Plone? I'm hoping that I could do some projects with it instead of Plone or Drupal.   • Why a very good PHP framework - Qcodo (or Qcubed - its branch) - is so unpopular?

    I am wondering why this framework (QCodo) is almost forgotten and totally unpopular. I've started using it a few years ago and it is the only thing that keeps me with PHP. Yeah ... its development is stuck (that's why there is now more active branch Qcubed) but it is still very good piece of software. Its main advantages: Event driven (something like asp.net) no spaghetti code Powerful code generation good ORM follows DRY very simple AJAX support is fun to write Since then I wanted to be trendy and checked Django but I cannot write normal request-based web application (it just doesn't feel right). Don't believe? chess.com is written with it and surely there are plenty others. My 2 questions are: Have you heard of it (PHP people)?   • Python/Django: Which authorize.net library should I use?

    I need authorize.net integration for subscription payments, likely using CIM. The requirements are simple - recurring monthly payments, with a few different price points. Customer credit card info will be stored a authorize.net . There are quite a few libraries and code snippets around, I'm looking for recommendations as to which work best. Satchmo seems more than I need, and it looks like it's complex. Django-Bursar seems like what I need, but it's listed as alpha. The adroll/authorize library also looks pretty good. The CIM XML APIs don't look too bad, I could connect directly with them. And there are quite a few other code snippets. What's the best choice right now, given my fairly simple requirements?
