• Opening Word documents from IE LAG Windows 7 IE8

  Hi, I'm having a lot of trouble opening documents from a network share in word using IE. The documents are located in a network share which is mapped to a virtual directory. The documents are accessed by URLs that link to the virtual directory. There is now a huge lag (sometimes up to a minute or two!) from when clicking on the link to the document opening in word. The 'loading disc' in IE just keeps spinning and nothing happens. Sometimes a pop up box appears with 'opening file - (address)' but it still takes ages. I've tried setting in the registry to open the files directly in ie but to no avail. Anyone have any ideas? Steve

• Ubuntu12.04 - launched applications, not staying in same desktop

  My question is why a launched application, if it has loading time like netbeans, eclipse jdeveloper etc. If i go to desktop3 and launch an application and then go to desktop 2 while I wait, then when it has loaded the application will launch in desktop2. Is there anyway to change this? I find it highly annoying since i on startup would like to launch 3-4 big applications, leave my computer while loadingf, and then return. But i cant leave since i have to launch them sequential instead of simultaneous... Help please :-)

• How do I recover files from a corrupt VDI file?

  Is it possible to repair a corrupt VDI file? The OS on the VDI (XP) doesn't boot at all, it just hangs at a black screen. I was getting file errors before on its last boot, but now its not working at all. Sector viewer shows 'Invalid partition table Error loading operating system Missing operating system'. I tried mounting the file from the host OS, but it just says that the drive isn't formatted. I don't need to be able to run the VDI, but I do need some files that are on it. Is there any way to recover files from the corrupt VDI file?

• Tomcat "connection interrupted" with ssl

  I can access Tomcat on port 8080, but not on 8443. When I try o get there, this is the error I get in Firefox: The connection was interrupted The connection to the.fqdn.com:8443 was interrupted while the page was loading. This is my connector: <Connector port="8443" protocol="org.apache.coyote.http11.Http11NioProtocol" SSLEnabled="true" maxThreads="150" scheme="https" secure="true" clientAuth="want" sslProtocol="TLS" keystoreFile="C:\temp\keystore.jks" keystorePass="changeit"/> I have the CA key in the jre's cacerts file. The server cert was generated using EJBCA and should be signed properly. Any suggestions on what is going on?

• Load images in parallel - supported by browser or a feature to implement?

  Hi all: I am not a pro in web development and Apache server still remains a mystery to me. we've got a project which runs on LAMP, pretty much like all the commercial hosting plans. I am confused about one problem : does modern browsers support image loading in parallel? or this requires some special feature/config set up from server side? Can this be done with PHP coding or by some server-side configuration? Is a special content delivery networking needed for this? The benchmark demonstration will be the flickr website. I am too suprised to see how all image thumbnails are loaded in a short time after a search as if there were only one image to load. • Force Firefox 14 to free memory when opening/closing lots of popups

  I'm currently trying to run some tests on a web application using Selenium IDE with Firefox 14. The tests mainly consist in loading a page containing thousands of links and clicking on every of those links. Of course, each time a popup shows, I tell Selenium to close it and proceed with the remaining links. However, it seems that even if I close the popups, Firefox is not freeing memory. Usually, I end up with Firefox crashing after opening 1500 popups (around 2.5Gb of memory usage). Is there any way to force the browser to free memory? Maybe something I should set in about:config? Or is there a flaw with Selenium? Thanks.

• Postgres pgpass windows - not working

  DB: Postgres 9.0 Client: Windows 7 Server Windows 2008, 64bit I'm trying to connect remotely to a postgres instance for purposes of performing a pg_dump to my local machine. Everything works from my client machine, except that I need to provide a password at the password prompt, and I'd ultimately like to batch this with a script. I've followed the instructions here: http://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/static/libpq-pgpass.html but it's not working. To recap, I've created a file on the client (and tried the server as well): C:/Users/postgres/AppData/postgresql/pgpass.conf, where postgresql is the db user. The file has one line with the following data: *:5432:*postgres:[mypassword] (also tried explicit ip/dbname values, all asterisks, and every combination in between. (I've also tried replacing each '*' with [localhost|myip] and [mydatabasename] respectively. From my client machine, I connect using: pg_dump -h [myip] -U postgres -w [mydbname] [mylocaldumpfile] I'm presuming that I need to provide the '-w' switch in order to ignore password prompt, at which point it should look in the AppData directory on the server. It just comes back with "connection to database failed: fe_sendauth: no password supplied. Any insights are appreciated. As a hack workaround, if there was a way I could tell the windows batch file on my client machine to inject the password at the postgres prompt, that would work as well. Thanks.

• How do I set the umask for files and directories created from the GUI in MacOS X Lion (10.7)?

  I've set my umask in my .bashrc file to 007. Any files created on the command line after loading my bashrc file respects this setting. I want to be able to set the umask to 007 for any files created using non-command line apps. This document talks about setting the umask via launchd. And it kind of works. If I follow these directions I can change the default permissions on a GUI created file from rw-r--r-- to rw-rw---- but the directories still are not group writeable (i.e. I want them to be rwxrwx--- but they are rwxr-x--- instead) The analog on Linux would be /etc/login.defs as the place to set the umask. What do I change in order for the umask to be set properly (i.e. the way I want it)?

• How do I setup a local DNS server on Mac OS Lion?

  I had some serious lag to resolve website address and sometimes things simply wouldn't load (pages kept loading for 5+ minutes without even a timeout error). So I had setup a local dns server/cache using BIND on Leopard and Snow Leopard. Now that I have Lion, i have the same problem, but the instructions no longer apply to Lion and I can't find a way to do it. Has anyone attempted to do this? Are there viable alternatives for DNS servers on OS X 10.7? For those who are wondering I already tried several external DNS server. Only my computer has this issue on the network.

• Vmware server: Browser does not load user interface

  I have the latest vmware server isntalled on ubuntu 8.04 lts 64 bit. I access the user interface over this url, which matches my ip and port settings: https://10.1.1.99:11222/ui Sometimes it works in fierofox 3.6, but sometimes not. Same in Google Chrome. When it does not work, what happens is that the cert is checked, the browser is loading something, but the result is a white page. Sometimes the favicon of vmware (blue with 3 squares) appears, but only the white page. And sometimes it works. I reload many times, most of the time the whit epage appears again. On some days I succeed. But on many days not. I can give more info if someone tells me what is needed. Please help, we need this badly.

  I am having the same problem like Rails custom environment Resque.enqueue does not create jobs , but the solution there doesn't work for me. I'm using Resque for a couple of asynchronous jobs. It works just fine for the staging environment, but for some reason it stopped working on development environment. For example, if I run the following: $ rails c development > Resque.enqueue(MyLovelyJob, 1) Nothing is enqueued. I check Resque using resque-web If I run it on staging - it works just fine. $ rails c staging > Resque.enqueue(MyLovelyJob, 1) I have tried to duplicate the 2 environment, and they seem to use absolutely the same configurations (database.yml , config/environment , etc.), but development is still not working. • CentOS - Yum doesn't update anymore?

  I've been trying to use yum now, but for some reason, not even the search work anymore. I even tried putting packages I already downloaded in the search criteria and is the same. • Connect trough remote computer connection

I would like to access internet from my home computer (Windows 7 Pro x64), trough my server in Germany, so I can use a German IP, what I need some times. I have complete acces in to both computers, but I just don't know where to start. (My knwoledge is limited to software development :/ ) I'd like to know where to start, if I need to create a VPN and so.. Thanks in advance!   I am trying to load the .arx file for a particular program, once the User clicks on the customized tab in AUtoCAD. Requirements are: 1.When User Clicks on the customized tab, it loads the .arx 2.Runs the program 3.Unload the .arx file. I achieved Point 2 by acedRegCmds-(); I tried getting point 1 and 3 working, by using acedArxLoad(_T("C:\Example\Example.arx")); command, but it did not work. • Cisco access-list confusion

  I'm having troubles implementing access-lists on my asa 5510 (8.2) in a way that makes sense for me. I have one access-list for every interface i have on the device. The access-lists are added to the interface via the access-group command. let's say I have these access-lists access-group WAN_access_in in interface WAN access-group INTERNAL_access_in in interface INTERNAL access-group Production_access_in in interface PRODUCTION WAN has security level 0, Internal Security level 100, Production has security level 50. What i want to do is have an easy way to poke holes from Production to Internal. This seams to be pretty easy, but then the whole notion of security levels doesn't seam to matter any more. I then can't exit out the WAN interface. I would need to add an ANY ANY access-list, which in turn opens access completely for the INTERNAL net. I could solve this by issuing explicit DENY ACEs for my internal net, but that sounds like quite the hassle. How is this done in practice? In iptables i would use a logic of something like this. If source equals production-subnet and outgoing interface equals WAN. ACCEPT.

• Why is Firefox so slow and heavy?

  For some reason, when I go to links the pages seem slow and heavy. It also has a lot of lag spikes between page loads. Basically it seems to freeze then load it all at once fast. I'm currently using Firefox 25. But when I use the same Chrome version, it seems to be very fast and smooth page loading. The CPU it takes on average is about 400,000k. • Windows 7 x64 Hard Freezing (again)

  Awhile ago, my computer was randomly freezing a few minutes after booting, and I ended up replacing the CPU and mobo after testing the RAM and hard drive, I also couldn't find anything wrong with the video card. So after replacing the presumably faulty hardware, everything worked fine for about a month and a half. All of a sudden, My computer is randomly freezing a few minutes after loading up any intensive application (games, mostly). Most of the time it just freezes with the current frame until I hard reset, although once it printed a BSOD message stating that dxgmms1.sys was to blame. The only difference between these two episodes I can think of is that I can do word/internet/work without issue now, as opposed to the near uselessness my computer was rendered last time. For those of you who want to know, I tested my memory with memtest86 (for 64 bit machines). I can't figure out what could have started this latest round of issues, the event logger just states that a kernel-power event has occurred (like last time) but I think thats just a generic "this machine has rebooted after a sudden shutdown" message.

• How to update a keyboard layout DLL on Windows?

  Information about keyboard layout is stored in keyboard layout DLLs on Windows. One can make a custom layout using a tool like Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/goglobal/bb964665.aspx). It creates the dynamical library and also an installer which places the DLL at a right place and also puts necessary information to registry so the layout can be used. Now my question. How can one update his custom layout? One could uninstall the layout and install the new version which effectively replaces the DLL file. However this alone doesn't work because it seems that the old copy of the DLL stays loaded somewhere and is used when one sets the layout instead of loading new version. So is there a way how to tell the system that its “keyboard layout cache” is invalid? Of course I could reboot the whole system but I'd like to avoid it as it's annoying and seems to be poor design to reboot whole system just to reload a DLL.

• Why is the size of windows off by 226x238 if defined via the Window Rules?

  I have installed Sawfish 1.8.2 from source on my new Ubuntu 12.04 installation following the Debian instructions, but I had this problem also with the stock 1.5.3. Whenever I define dimensions in the Window Rules for a window, the size is off by exactly 226x238 pixels, which means that 100x100 turns into 326x328. That's a very odd behavior, given that Sawfish is saving and loading the dimensions of the windows correctly (if saved via the window menu). Some additional system information: $ uname -a Linux Dagon 3.2.0-24-generic-pae #39-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 21 18:54:21 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux $ sawfish --version sawfish version 1.8.2 nvidia proprietary driver, 9600GT Two monitors, 1920x1080 + 1440x900 in one session. Positionng the windows is working fine, only the dimensions are off by that odd number. Does somebody have an idea why?

  In my office, i have to schedule for moving a file from one computer to other computer (Both are using Elastix). My idea is using cron, scp, and rm to do this. So here are the script that i use: scp -r /home/data/* [email protected]:/home/data1 && rm -r /home/data/* That script did the copy, but not remove the source file. I already read this question: Hov to _MOVE_ files with scp? The problem is, the computer doesn't have an internet connection.   I have an SSL certificate which is valid for multiple (sub-) domains. In Apache I have configured this as follows: In /etc/apache2/apache2.conf NameVirtualHost <my ip>:443 Then for one named virtual host I have <VirtualHost <my ip>:443> ServerName ... SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile ... SSLCertificateKeyFile ... SSLCertificateChainFile ... SSLCACertificateFile ... </VirtualHost> Finally, for every other site I want to be accessible over HTTPS I just have a <VirtualHost <my ip>:443> ServerName ... </VirtualHost> The good news is that it works. However, when I start Apache I get warning messages [warn] Init: SSL server IP/port conflict: Domain A:443 (...) vs. Domain B:443 (...) [warn] Init: SSL server IP/port conflict: Domain C:443 (...) vs. Domain B:443 (...) [warn] Init: You should not use name-based virtual hosts in conjunction with SSL!! So, my question is: how should I be configuring this? Clearly from the warning messages I am doing something wrong (although it does work!), however, the above configuration was the only one I could get to work. It is somewhat annoying as the configuration files have an explicit dependence on my IP address.

• Apache on Windows random long wait times

  I have a development machine with Apache installed as a service on Windows. The installation is fresh out of the box, with no changes to configuration aside from adding the PHP module. From day one, I've had a problem that looks like this: Essentially, Apache is freezing for about 11 seconds before replying on random requests. This appears to happen more frequently when the host hasn't been connected to in a while, but this is not always the case. I've eliminated MySQL, PHP, and the specific application; this long wait problem will occur even when loading a static file such as favicon.ico. Thus, the only factor remaining is Apache, which is freezing for consistently around 10-11 seconds before replying. The problem is not the DNS problem that many people point to; as you can see, the DNS lookup is instant, and the problem occurs both on localhost and 127.0.0.1. Thanks for the time.

• How to disable 3G USB Modem internal storage from being loaded by linux kernel?

  Hi, I've got a problem with my 3G modem [Huawei E122]. It has internal storage and kernel assigns a device [/dev/sdX] to it. Because of that, every second time my machine will not boot - kernel panic - as my usb hdd gets assigned /dev/sdb instead of /dev/sda. I cannot use LABEL nor UUID in root= kernel parameter, as it is only available when using initrd, and I can't use it - I am using Debian on my router - mips architecture machine. I have to prevent this from happening, as my router has to start everyday and I have to be sure it works ok. I don't have physical access to restart it when something goes wrong. I don't use my modem internal storage, there's no SD card inserted. However kernel detects the reader and loads it. I can not prevent loading od usb drivers since my hdd is on USB as well. I will appreciate any ideas.
