• DLINK WBR-1310B Wireless Router seems to hang...

  I have a brand new DLINK-1310B Wireless Router (box never before opened, although I bought it the neighborhood computer junk store). I am using it at home (and in fact am using it this instant from a wireless laptop). When operative, I can ping it at 192.168.0.1, and I can log into it from the PC attached to by LAN and from the wireless PC at //192.168.0.1. In the course of the day since I've installed, it seems to have locked up 3 times. Each time the symptoms are my web browser (or other internet service) stops with a "No internet connection" error. Attempts to contact the router via 192.168.0.1 get no reaction, from either the wireless laptop or from the hardwired PC sitting next to it. It doesn't respond to pings to that address either. Rebooting fixes it. Its brand new. I've seen discussion in other questions about aging cheap electronics. Its too new to be aged. Anyboyd else seen this behavior with a DLINK-1310? Or do I just need to exchange it for another and try again? (I hate rolling dice, I bought the DLINK becuase a previous Linksys died of apparant heating problems). Remarkably, nobody talks about how much software is in a router. Is the stuff just buggy?

• VPN - Accessing computer outside of network. Only works one way

  I could use some help here. My ideal goal is to create a VPN for 2 macs that are in different locations so that they can share each others screens and share files. I basically want to do what Logmein's Hamachi does, but without the 5 user limitation. I have set up the VPN on my Synology NAS at my house using the PPTP protocol. I could also use OpenVPN. The good news is that I can use a laptop outside of my home network to access any computer on my network at my house. The bad news is that I can not do the reverse. I want to use a computer in my home network (same network as the VPN server) to access a computer outside of my network (which is connected via VPN successfully). My internal IP is 192.168.1.xxx PPTP VPN assigns my laptop that is outside of my network with 192.168.5.xxx, but when I try to access it remotely either with afp://192.168.5.xxx or vnc://192.168.5.xxx I can't connect using either. Is this something that I should be able to do or is VPN only one way? I've also tried openvpn with the same results. Thanks for any help! -Dan

• Assistance on setup to Connect an offsite server to the LAN via RRAS VPN - Server 2008 R2

  I have an office LAN protected using a Zyxel Zywall USG 300. I've set up an L2TP/ipsec VPN on that which accepts connections using a shared secret and I've tested this from multiple clients. I have a server offsite and want to set up RRAS to use a persistent connection to the VPN so that it can carry out network jobs even with no one logged in (I'm using it for Micorosft DPM secondary backup). If I create a vpn as if I were setting up a users laptop it can dial in no problem but if I set up a demand dial interface in RRAS it errors. I enable RRAS ticking only demand dial interface (branch office routing) Select network interfaces, right click and choose new demand dial interface Name the VPN ToCompany Select connect using VPN And then L2TP as the vpn type enter the IP address (double-checked for typos!) select Route IP packets on this interface specify static route to remote network as 10.0.0.0/24 with metric of 1 add dial out credentials (again double checked for typos and confirmed with other vpn connections click finish now I right-click on the new interface and choose properties and then the security tab I change Data encryption to optional select only PAP for Authentication (both as per manufacturer of Zywall) click advanced settings against type of vpn and set shared secret then I select the new interface, right-click and choose connect this dials and then errors with either 720 or 811 as the error codes. However, if I create a VPN by going to Network & Sharing center and setting up as if I was creating a VPN from my laptop to the office (say) it dials successfully so I know the VPN settings are correct and the machine can connect to the VPN. Suggests very strongly the problem is how I'm setting up RRAS. Can anyone help?

• SSD causing 100% CPU usage in Apache/PHP

  I wanted to increase the performance on my development laptop so I added an Intel 320 Series SSD as my primary drive. Everything is amazingly fast, as expected, except Apache/PHP. I develop Magento by using an Ubuntu 10.10 virtual machine. Information: Host OS: Win 7 Professional 64bit Guest OS: Ubuntu 10.10 32bit Processor: i7 Chipset QM55 SSD: Intel 320 Series 160gb 30% full HDD: Hitachi 320gb 50% full (in side bay using an adapter) Laptop: Lenovo T510 Using: Shared folders Apache Version: 2.2.16 PHP Version: 5.3.3-1 APC Version: 3.1.3p1 APC Memory: 128M Using tmpfs for cache, log, session directories in Magento In the VM running on the SSD (VM files and source files are on the same drive) loading a product page in the Admin takes on average 26.2 seconds and uses 100% CPU for nearly the entire time. In the VM running on the old HDD loading the same page takes on average 4.4 seconds. It mostly uses around 40-50% of the CPU while rendering the page. I have read this post: Performance issues when using SSD for a developer notebook (WAMP/LAMP stack)? It says to change some settings in the bios. I have turned any and all power management features off in the bios. I can't for the life of me understand why this would be happening.

  whenever I want to install a new vim script to the linux server I'm working in , my typical workflow is as the following: surf the plugin's homepage in vim online using fireXXXX download a right version of the plugin to my laptop by click some highlighted link upload the downloaded plugin from my laptop to linux server using winscp which is really inconvenient. I don't know what is the magic behind this : I mean for the same hyperlinki click it in web browser I can let you download it but use wget plus the hyperlink in linux commandline will end up with nothing but error indication. hyperlink in web browser . otherwise I can get the link in web browser and then use wget or some similar tool to actually do the downloding. I try new cool vim scripts quite often , so you can imagin my dismay when have to repeat the tedious action all the time. So if anyone of you knows some tips which can let me downloading the vim scripts in a more "professional" way, I'll appreciate it a lot. post edit : My problem is not find a tool like wget or curl . The problem I met is quite specific to use these tools to download vim script. let's take http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=30 as an example, it's the normal place where one can get the script, at least for me. but I can't find an working url from this page that can feed to wget .

• Delete ARP cache on Mac OS when moving from one Wifi network to the other

  I am facing wireless connectivity problems when I move from one Wifi network to the other. Here is how it happens: I am at my friends place. I connect to his Wifi. His Wifi router ip address is 192.168.0.1. Everything is fine I close my laptop, come back to my house, open my laptop and I connect to the Wifi Network at my place. Different ESSID, but the Wifi router address is the same 192.168.0.1. At this point I cant get to anything on the internet. To debug I try to see if I can ping the router (192.168.0.1), I cant. I get a no route to host. Meanwhile airport tells me Im connected to Wifi. I see the arp cache and I see a permanent entry for 192.168.0.1 ? (192.168.0.1) at 5c:d9:98:65:73:6c on en1 permanent [ethernet] This permanent bit looks problematic. I go ahead and delete the arp cache entry and all is fine with the world until I go back to my friends place where the same situation plays out. Now my question is, why the hell is this happening? If there is no way around it, can I run a script on Wifi connect/disconnect to clear out the arp cache? • LVM and cloning HDs

  Using Linux, I have several backup levels. One of them is a periodical sector by sector copy (using dd) of my laptop harddisk to an external USB disk. Yes, I have other backups too, like remote rsync. This approach (the disk dd) is OK when cloning a HDD with no LVM volumes, since I can plug the external disk anytime and mount the partitions simply mounting /dev/sdb* instead of /dev/sda*. Trivial and handy. Today I moved ALL my harddisk (including the /boot) to LVM. Everything works fine. I will stress it for a couple of days, and then I will do a sector by sector copy to my external harddisk. Now I have a problem, I guess. If in the future I plug the external USB HDD to recover any file, the OS will detect a duplicate LVM configuration, with the same name and the same UUID. Even doing a vgrename (which LVM would be renamed, the internal HDD or the external HDD?), the cloned UUID will not change. Is there any command to change name and UUID? Ideally I would clone the HDD and then change the LVM group name and its UUID, but I don't know how to do it. Another related issue would be... In the past I have booted my laptop using the external disk, using the BIOS boot menu and changing GRUB entries manually to boot from /dev/sdb instead of /dev/sda. But now my current GRUB configuration boots directly from a LVM logical volume, something like: set root='(LVM-root)' in my grub.cfg. So... What is going to happen with duplicated volumes? Any suggestion? I guess I could repartition my external harddisk and change backup strategy from dd to rsync, but this disk has windows installed too, and I really would like to have a physical "real" copy.

• What can I do to prevent system power downs?

  Yesterday I was given my brother's old laptop - core i7, 2.67GHz, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Win7 64 bit. It's a Sony Vaio Z11. Approx 18 months old. When running something computationally intensive, the fan starts up and after about 30 secs it just powers itself down with no warning. I guess it is overheating. There is nothing in the event logs to suggest what is causing it - the only thing I see is "the last system shutdown was unexpected" or something similar. This is a problem for me because I use a lot of number crunching apps, which pretty much makes it useless to me. I would like to know if there is anything I can do, other than the obvious things I've done already - open up and clean out dust, re-install the OS. According to my brother, this problem started about 6 months ago when it was already outside warranty. If it's just used for simple things - web browsing, word processing etc, the problem does not occur. Any ideas for what I can do to fix this ? Update: I found that the laptop has 2 hardware settings for graphics: Speed and Stamina - the Speed setting seems to use an nvidia GEforce GT 330M, while the Stamina setting uses an Intel chipset. With the setting on Speed, I can hear the fan the whole time, and the system powers down after a short while (5-10 mins) even just doing basic tasks (browsing this site for example), but doesn't shut down if I just leave it switched on. In this mode it also sometimes just freezes the screen and I have to power off myself. However on Stamina setting it only powers down when doing number crunching and never freezes the screen.

• Can I make my PC backup and then sleep on demand with WHS?

  I really hate the way that WHS backs up at a particular time in the morning. First of all I don't EVER want my computer turning on when I am not there. EVER. I have a Core-i7 laptop which literally could burn the house down quite easily if it were to turn on in a bag. I also don't ever want my PC to sleep unless I tell it to. I don't have hibernation or sleep enabled and this is the only way that WHS will sleep after a backup is complete. I know that Windows 7 has the ability to disable waking up when on battery power but it doesn't seem to work on my laptop. These are the possibilities (with wake timers left as default): 'Wake this computer for backup' ON - it turns on in my bag if i forget to turn it off - and stays on when the backup is complete. 'Wake this computer for backup' OFF - it backs up in the morning, but I need to leave the machine on all night. I say 'Backup Now' and then it backs up immediately. I can turn it off when its done if I'm still awake, but then that backup appears as 'locked' in the console and not 'automatically managed'. What I'd really like to do is : Click 'Backup and Sleep' and then go to bed. It will backup immediately and then sleep the PC. This backup must be 'automatically managed' and not appear as a 'locked backup' in my console Show me a confirmation that everything was backed up successfully (or not) when I turn it on. Is there any way to achieve this?

• How do I make wallpaper fit both monitors in dual monitor setup?

  I am deploying some custom corporate wallpaper as part of a Windows 7 rollout. Some people will be using dual monitors, and the additional monitors may be either 4:3 or widescreen. I want to use the same wallpaper on both screens (i.e. 2 copies of the same wallpaper, not stretched across both.) If I set the background to "stretch", it uses the aspect ratio of the primary monitor to stretch the wallpaper on both monitors. So, for example, if I have a dual monitor setup using a 4:3 TFT as primary and my (widescreen) laptop LCD as secondary - the image shows on the laptop LCD in 4:3, with a black stripe down either side. I've only noticed this as an issue with my "custom" wallpaper. Both the default MS wallpaper and the built in Lenovo wallpaper don't seem to have this issue. Is this by using "trickery" such as using an image larger than the largest resolution you will have and centering it? (i.e. so you crop out part of the image.) Or can this be done "properly"? I don't want to use 3rd party software to do this, but would happily do a bit of Powershell scripting if this would solve the issue. Thanks in advance, Ben

• Domain Controller died, now get authentication boxes in IE for SDL Tridion 2009

  We had a major network issue where our secondary domain controller (responsible for Win2k3 boxes) died and had to be rebuilt (I beleive this is what happened, I am a developer not network admin). Anyway, I am working remotely via VPN at the moment and since this happened, I am getting an authentication box when trying to access certain areas of SDL Tridion via IE (Tridion 2009 SP1 is IE only) it seems like somewhere my credentials are not being passed correctly or the ones cached on my laptop do not match the ones the Domain Controller has. This only seems to affect Windows 2003 servers. Our IT support thinks that the only way to sort it out is to connect my laptop directly to the network. I am not planned to go to the office for a few weeks at least and this issue means I have to work with Tridion via Remote Desktop. We thought changing the password on my account might work but this didn't help. So basically my question is, is there any way I can reset my credential cache without having to reconnect to the network? Or is it IE that is causing the problem perhaps, since I can RDP to servers and use Tridion 2011 instances in other browsers fine? I am on Windows 7 using SonicWall VPN client.

• Get Internal IP Address From DHCP Hostname

  I would like to try and get an internal ip address of one of the computers on my network. The reason for this is I have a little home server box downstairs but every time I want to SSH into it I have to open my router configuration and go on the DHCP client table and look at the IP address. For example I would like to be able to go ssh ell-sever instead of ssh 192.168.1.105 or whatever it happens to be. My network configuration is like so: Router downstairs that is connected to the Internet and is running a DHCP server My server computer (ell-server) is a headless pc connected to the router via ethernet cable. Running Ubuntu 11.04 Server Edition My laptop upstairs (ell-laptop) that is running Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop Edition connected wirelessly Other (irrelevant) computers - 2 x Windows XP, 1 x Xubuntu - all connected with cables. (It seemed to me the method of connection isn't useful information but I put it in anyway - just in case. If I have missed any information please tell me) Do I have to run a DNS server on one of my computers? If so which one? And does that mean I will have to run a DDNS client on each computer? Any ideas of how i can extract eg. the [root] lvm partition from the above testdisk report ? I am afraid that my disk was also corrupted.

• Windows 7 fails to connect to the internet a few minutes after startup

  Problem Earlier today, when I turned on my desktop computer, my internet connection works fine. Cryptocurrency miners connecting and hashing as usual and I can browse websites. But after a few minutes, my miner fails indicating that there is something wrong with my internet connection. Tried refreshing my browser and is stuck at "resolving host", and then presented me an error. After that, i can't browse sites anymore. But the weird thing is that the network icon in Windows 7 shows no signs of problems. Solutions Made Restarted my computer without doing anything: Problem persists. Tried using the network troubleshooter of windows: Reported no problems Stopped bonjour still no progress. Loaded windows using Last good config: still no progress. Restarted Modem: No change. Current Status I currently did a system restore to my system to a point before installing the latest update from Microsoft. Because earlier today, I installed some updates and after that, the problem started to appear. (After system restore, same problem.) Latest Programs installed before the problem MS Visual Studio 2013 (but internet still worked fine after the install). I hope someone could provide answers on this problem. It is my first time encountering this. EDIT: Additional Info OS: Windows 7 SP1 64-bit AV: Avast Free Antivirus Internet Connection Type: Ethernet It appears that my Laptop can't even connect to the machine thru Remote Desktop My laptop and phone on WiFi works fine and can connect to the internet. EDIT 2: Whenever I boot into Safe Mode, my Internet is fine.

• Will a 2.4Ghz WAP intefere with a 5.0Ghz WAP if placed directly next to each other

  This is mostly a curiosity question to people who know more about radio and wi-fi than I. The 2.4Ghz band is massively overpopulated near my house to the point of sometimes getting 1000ms pings to the router from only a few feet away. inSSIDer finds at least 10 broadcasting SSID's within around 15 seconds of starting, so this isn't a real surprise to me! Sometimes I can get good results by changing the channel to something like 3 or 8, but it's usually temporary as the others use Auto Channel and hop around. Now, the router I have is capable of 5.0Ghz, as is the laptop I type this on. Switching to 5.0Ghz gives superb results: I can download at ~90Mbps and get consistent 1ms pings. The problem is that only this laptop supports 5.0Ghz! My question: Would I still get decent 5.0Ghz performance if I place a 2.4Ghz access point directly next to my router? And, indeed, will 2.4Ghz continue working as 'normal'? Testing would be an obvious step, but I threw all my superfluous equipment out in a recent house move. My understanding is that I should get good performance, certainly in comparison to having two devices using the same frequency range, but I do believe there will be some impact by the virtue of them being directly next to each other. (Cabling is not an option due to it being a rented house)

• WiFi & GbE Slow while Both Active.

  I'm having a problem with my WiFi network connection when I use my wired GbE connection concurrently on my Laptop. I'm using my WiFi for Internet access, and general web surfing and I'm using my GbE connection to connect to my PlayStation so I can stream media. The WiFi connection is via a Linksys 610N connected to my Cable Modem. Where as the GbE connection is a direct connection from my Ethernet port to the Ethernet port of the PS3 via a Cat-5 cable (no router in between this connection). As soon as I connect the cable from the PS3 to my Ethernet port on my Laptop the WiFi connection slows to a halt, but then allows for a connection to the web as normal but at much slower speeds for the things like BitTorrent that stops completely. It seems to me that Windows can't handle both connections at once. It will have both active but it can only accept and send packets on one device at one time. I can get WiFi connections to work to go to websites and the like, but once I use my GbE connection to share media between my Laptop and my PS3 the Wifi connection dies out and I no longer have access to the internet. • Setting Up My Home Network

  I currently have five PCs at home, three running WinXP and two running Ubuntu. They are set up like this: ISP ----- Modem ---- Switch ---- Ubuntu1 -- B&W Printer | |--WinXP1 | |--WinXP2 Wireless |--Colour Printer | |---------Ubuntu2 |---------WinXP3 (laptop) The Ubuntu1 machine is set up as a PDC using Samba and runs fetchmail, procmail, dovecot to get my e-mail and allow me to access the e-mail via imap so I can read the e-mail on any PC. I'd like to set up the network like this: ISP ----- Modem ---- Ubuntu1 ---- Switch ------WinXP1 | | |--WinXP2 B&W Printer Wireless |--Colour Printer | |---------Ubuntu2 |---------WinXP3 (laptop) My questions are: How to configure Ubuntu1 to act as a firewall. How to configure Ubuntu1 to provide a consistant user authentication across the network, at the moment Samba provides roaming profiles for the XP machines but the Ubuntu2 machine has it's own user lists. I'd like to have a single authentication for both XP machines and linux machines so that users added to the server list will propagate to all PCs (i.e. new users can log on using any PC without modifying any of the client PCs). How to configure a linux client (Ubuntu2 above) to access files on the server (Ubuntu1), some of which are in user specific folders, effectively sharing /home/{user} per user (read and write access) and stuff like /home/media/photos with read access for everyone and limited write access. How to configure the XP machines (if it is different from a the Samba method). How to set up e-mail filtering. I'd like to have a whitelist/blacklist system for incoming e-mails for some of the e-mail accounts (mainly, my kids' accounts) with filtered e-mails being put into quaranteen until a sysadmin either adds the sender to a blacklist or whitelist. OK, that's a lot of stuff. For now, I don't want config files*, rather, what services / applications to use and how they interact. For example, LDAP could be used for authentication but what else would be useful to make the administration of the LDAP easier. Once I have a general idea for the overall configuration, I can ask other questions about the specifics. Skizz I have looked around for information, but most answers are usually in the form of abstract config files and lists of packages to install.

• Triple monitor setting in Linux with USB-HDMI adapter

  I'm trying to set up a triple monitor desktop at my office using Fedora 17, but it seems impossible, let me explain the setting: Laptop ASUS K53SD with 2 graphic cards, Intel and nVidia (Screen controled by Intel card) 24" Full HD monitor connected to the HDMI output (controlled by Intel card) 23" Full HD monitor connected to an USB-HDMI adapter (via framebuffer in /dev/fb2, apparently) VGA output (not used) controlled by nVidia card First of all, the USB-HDMI adapter works perfectly, it gives me a green screen (which means the communication is OK) and I can make it work if I set up a single monitor setting via framebuffer in Xorg. Here I leave the page where I got the instructions: http://plugable.com/2011/12/23/usb-graphics-and-linux Now I'm trying to set up the the two main monitors (laptop and 24") with the intel driver and the 23" with the framebuffer, but the most succesful configuration I get is the two main monitors working and the third disconnected. • Is VGA port hot-pluggable?

  In meetings, I often see people detaching the VGA connector from one running laptop and connecting it to another, while the projector is still on. Is this 100% risk free, and OK by design of the VGA standard? If there's a risk involved in hot-plugging VGA, can it be removed by turning off or suspending either laptop, display, or both? I see this being done all the time without causing disaster, so clearly I'm not interested in answers stating "we do it all the time, so it should be OK!". I want to know if there's a risk - real or in theory - that something breaks when doing this. EDIT: I did an internet search on the topic, and I never found a clear statement as to why it is safe or unsafe to hot swap VGA devices. The typical form is a forum question asking basically the same question as I did, and the following types of statements Yes it's hot swappable! I do it all the time! It involves some kind of risk, so don't do it! You're some kind of moron if you think there's a risk, so just do it! But no explanation as to why it safe or not... Joe Taylors answer below contains a link to a forum post and answers that basically give me the same statements as mentioned above. But again, no good explanation why. So I looked for an actual manual for a projector, and found "Lenovo C500 Projector User’s Guide". It states on page 3-1: Connecting devices Computers and video devices can be connected to the projector at the same time. Check the user’s manual of the connecting device to confirm that it has the appropriate output connector. • Emptying Windows temp folder is a good idea?

  Am using DELL Inspiron with Windows 7. As far as I know emptying the windows temp folder would be good. But I faced a strange behaviour around 8 months back, when I clear my windows temp folder. The next day onwards, my laptop starting displaying daily one or other errors and one day OS got crashed. Till now I am not sure whether OS got crashed due to clearing the windows temp folder or something else is problem. Here Windows temp folder mean "C:\Windows\Temp" This is the behind the story. Today, this temp folder "C:\Windows\Temp" contains 102 GB Most of the space occupied by the files starts with etilqs_*.*. I came to know that these files are generated due to WD SmartWare. Now my problem is:- Actually I want clean up this folder, since it occupies lot of space. If I clean up "C:\Windows\Temp" folder, will my laptop face the same kind of problem which I faced earlier OR Any new problems will occur? Please suggest me a good solution.

  Hi all, Background: We need to consolidate sales data across the country to do analysis Our Internet connection/IT expertise/IT investment is not quite strong, therefore full BI solution is out of question I tried several SaaS BI solution (GoodData, ZohoReports) and while they're good, they seem not to fully support what we need We're looking at 'bout 2 millions record for every 2 months My current approach Our (10) sites currently gathers data from all their branches and consolidate them into 1 Excel file with Pivot table and embed source data In HQ, I will request 10 sites to send back those Excel files periodically We will import those Excel to our MSSQL server There will be a master Excel file, that will also have the same pivot table (as those came from site Excel file), and datasource is the MSSQL server More details For testing, I currently use MSSQL 2008 Express on my laptop So far, I imported our transactions for the past 2 months and there are 2 millions+ row in 1 table in MSSQL (we just use 1 table, corresponding to our common pivot table structure). DB size is ~ 600 MB In the master Excel file, if not including the source data, it's just < 10MB. Including the source data will increase the size to 60 MB (so I supposed Office 2007 automatically zip the data ?) I try using the Pivot (drag-and-drop fields) and the performance so far is OK (my laptop specs: C2D T7200, 3GB RAM, Windows XP) So my question is : If we're looking at full year transaction (roughly 15 millions rows in MSSQL 2008 Express, 3.6 GB in size), is there any issue with that 15 million rows in 1 table in SQL Express ? Is there any performance issue with the pivot table at that time ? Can it still embed the source data ? (I google-ed but didn't find the maximum size of source data Excel 2007 can embed) Any other suggestions on how we can better do this ? Given that we can't afford the full BI solution, any light-weight/budget/SaaS BI that you can recommend ? Thanks

• How do I stop VLC from stealing my volume buttons

  when I press the volume buttons on my laptop, usually the system volume is changed. However, when I do this with VLC it "steals" the presses and adjusts it's own "volume" instead. The system volume is also changed. I can't find any way to turn this off in VLC. Does anyone know? Update: Sorry, some more details I should have included originally: VLC VERSION: 1.1.4 (and a few previous releases, back to about 1.1.0 or so, I think) OS: Win Vista Pro 32 HARDWARE: Dell 1720 laptop (the volume buttons are little buttons on the front of the unit, they may work something like "media" keyboard volume buttons) Update: The buttons seem to map to Ctrl+Alt+b and Ctrl+Alt+c (according to the shortcut key box in windows shortcut properties) but the VLC advanced preferences hotkeys screen doesn't list these as the keys it uses for volume. I changed it so there are no volume hotkeys in VLC settings - no luck it still steals the presses and adjusts the volume. Also, pressing Ctrl+Alt+b or c doesn't change my system volume, so who knows what windows or VLC are doing to recognise those volume buttons. :(

• Good references to know why has my computers stopped responding me

  Hello all! I´m a windows xp user (but not for much time...) and I usually see how my computer stop of responding me. The process is this: Firsly it became totally stopped or very slow for certain periods of 5 minutes. How could I do? After that it gets stopped (Even not totally because If I click on the bar I see a blinking response in the bar botton of the program I click on. It´s could be anything related with security (like the firewall or some virus)? Computer university: I usually experience this, using Matlab (R2007a) with System Generator (its respective compatible version) My personal laptop: It´s usually works well but when stopped periods became to appears I know in not much time it will became totally stopped. I usually see how Word 2007 get stopped and after a while my windows xp gets stopped. (well I can access to the the manage task pressing ctr+alt and...). The only solution I see is to kill program by program... My petition: Please, I need good references that help me how to think in order to avoid or to manage the problems previously described. Does anyone know usefull books or articles? • Router drops internet connection if I connect an additional pc

  Hey, I'm using a SMC2804WBRP-G router connected to my ADSL-modem. Usually there are two computers connected to this router: a win7 ultimate desktop(wired) and a macbook air (wireless). Both working absolutely fine and never caused any connection drops as far as I know. A new room mate moved in last month and each time she starts up her win7 home laptop the router looses the internet connection. The laptop is on a wired connection. The first time she connected to my router, the connection dropped every 2 mins. To find out whats wrong with her machine I disabled all unnecessary services etc. besides the anti virus software. That helped to eliminate almost all of those periodic connection drops. But the start up drop remained and I've got the feeling that the router is still loosing connection from time to time. I haven't had the time to find out what service caused the periodic drops. But I'm more concerned about is that start up drop. Can anyone point me in the right direction to look for the problem? I would be very thankful for any hints or tips!

• Windows 7 BSOD when changing power plan

  i have a strange problem. When i want to change the power plan on my laptop from High performance to Balanced, Windows freezes and i get bsod. The power plan settings are all default. Laptop specs: - Intel Core i3 330M/350M - Intel® HM55 Express Chipset - DDR3 1066 MHz SDRAM 8GB - ATI Mobility™ Radeon HD5730 1GB DDR3 VRAM - Intel SSD330 128gb - Windows 7 Home premium I've searched the internets but couldnt find a similar issue. BSOD first started when i installed this SSD and stopped when i've updated the chipset controller driver then started again yesterday when i wanted to change the power settings plan.Minidump file here. Any help with this weird issue appriciated, thanks. Edit: - i've ran Memory diagnostic tool, - Intel SSD diagnostics - and updated the firmware to 3.2.1. Non of these steps worked or shown signs of errors - but still got BSOD when changing power plan settings.
