  • AWS EC2 Oracle RDB - Storing and managing my data

    - by llaszews
When create an Oracle Database on the Amazon cloud you will need to store you database files somewhere on the EC2 cloud. There are basically three places where database files can be stored: 1. Local drive - This is the local drive that is part of the virtual server EC2 instance. 2. Elastic Block Storage (EBS) - Network attached storage that appears as a local drive. 3. Simple Storage Server (S3) - 'Storage for the Internet'. S3 is not high speed and intended for store static document type files. S3 can also be used for storing static web page files. Local drives are ephemeral so not appropriate to be used as a database storage device. The leaves EBS which is the best place to store database files. EBS volumes appear as local disk drives. They are actually network-attached to an Amazon EC2 instance. In addition, EBS persists independently from the running life of a single Amazon EC2 instance. If you use an EBS backed instance for your database data, it will remain available after reboot but not after terminate. In many cases you would not need to terminate your instance but only stop it, which is equivalent of shutdown. In order to save your database data before you terminate an instance, you can snapshot the EBS to S3. Using EBS as a data store you can move your Oracle data files from one instance to another. This allows you to move your database from one region or or zone to another. Unfortunately, to scale out your Oracle RDS on AWS you can not have read only replicas. This is only possible with the other Oracle relational database - MySQL. The free micro instances use EBS as its storage. This is a very good white paper that has more details: AWS Storage Options This white paper also discusses: SQS, SimpleDB, and Amazon RDS in the context of storage devices. However, these are not storage devices you would use to store an Oracle database. This slide deck discusses a lot of information that is in the white paper: AWS Storage Options slideshow

  • Unit testing installation of services

    - by skiphoppy
Our installer program is going to be installing a number of system services, under both Windows and UNIX, using JavaServiceWrapper. There will be a class responsible for creating JavaServiceWrapper config files, installing the services, etc. Can I have some suggestions on how to unit-test this class?

  • What's the best way to keep java app data stored redundantly in a file?

    - by Bijan
If I have systems that are based on realtime data, how can I ensure that all the information that is current is redundantly stored in a file? So that when the program starts again, it uses this information to initialize itself back to where it was when it closed. I know of xstream and HSQLDB. but wasn't sure if this was the best option for data that needs to be a literal carbon copy.

  • Yet Another SQL Strategy for Versioned Data

There is a popular design for a database that requires a built-in audit-trail of amendments and additions, where data is never deleted, but merely superseded by a later version. Whilst this is conceptually simple, it has always made for complicated SQL for reporting the latest version of data. Alex joins the debate on the best way of doing this with an example using an indexed view and the filtered index.

  • Hospital fined $1m for Patient Data Breach

    - by martin.abrahams
As an illustration of the potential cost of accidental breaches, the US Dept of Health and Human Services recently fined a hospital $1m for losing documents relating to some of its patients. Allegedly, the documents were left on the subway by a hospital employee. For incidents in the UK, several local government bodies have been fined between £60k and £100k. Evidently, the watchdogs are taking an increasingly firm position.

  • ESXi5 - management services crashes - vms running

    - by Frederik Nielsen
I have a setup with two ESXi5 servers. We are(were) running with a ISCSi box to server disk for the VM's - however we are in the progress of migrating away from it, because the storage os disk is bad. Now, one of the ESXi hosts has been running for ~20hrs, and it seems like the management services just crashed on that host.. The vms are still running - so it's not really serious. However, I want to fix it. Should I be worried? Will the VM's keep running? The hosts does respond on pings. I am running a vcenter to administrate the hosts. Thanks in advance.

  • Soapui mocking services which return json

    - by eeek
Microsoft Ajax can expose webservices which respond with json or xml depending on configuration. I would like to mock these services using soap ui. Using the wsdl I can do this to mock the services in the case where xml is returned, however how can I mock the response when JSON is returned?

  • How can you replicate each row of an R data.frame and specify the number of replications for each ro

    - by wkmor1
    df <- data.frame(var1=c('a', 'b', 'c'), var2=c('d', 'e', 'f'), freq=1:3) What is the simplest way to expand the first two columns of the data.frame above, so that each row appears the number of times specified in the column 'freq'? In other words, go from this: >df var1 var2 freq 1 a d 1 2 b e 2 3 c f 3 To this: >df.expanded var1 var2 1 a d 2 b e 3 b e 4 c f 5 c f 6 c f

  • Local service accounts

    - by Jeremy
Normally we create service accounts in Active Directory, and if we install things like SQL Server, etc, we set the software services we set them to use those service accounts. The service accounts don't have the ability to be used to log into a workstation interactively. For Proof of concepts, we're installing SQL Server and other software on Virtual windows 7 workstations that aren't part of a domain, so we are creating local accounts that will be used by windows services. Is it possible to stop those users from appearing as options on the login screen?

  • Cloud services can't be reached from complex customer infrastructure

    - by Nock
We have several services running on a cloud, they all are hosted on Windows Server 2012 R2, have public IP address and specific port. Some of our customers can't reach them because for "some reason" the ports are cut between a firewall between them and us. (some customers are using a shared internet connection in a multi tenant office and they can't change firewall communication) Well, you get it, we don't have the possibility to make all the firewall "allowing" the communication. My customers all runs Windows 7 at least. What is the best counter solution in such case, using Microsoft (Windows Server) technologies? The best would be some kind of tunneling communication or VPN, but the customer should also be able to access his/her enterprise resources. Bby the way, today we using IPSec using Windows Firewall to secure the communication, is IPSec tunneling a solution for us? Otherwise, is there a service in Windows to enable some kind of VPN between a client and a server but only for a given set of servers?

  • Path of Replication

    - by geeko
I'm currently developing a replication system to keep data in-synch between an arbitrary number of servers. Some of these servers exist in one cluster on one LAN. Others exist somewhere else in the world. I'm wondering what are the pros/cons of different paths that we choose to flow replicated data on between servers? In other words, what are the different strategies to load balance the replication process ?

  • How frequent are network partitions on cloud services?

    - by roja
Much is made of the CAP trade-off for data storage where conflicts can be introduced if there is a network partition. My question is there any evidence that this is a problem that arises with any significant frequency in modern cloud IAAS services e.g.; EC2, Azure, Rackspace. Is it a problem which, despite being a theoretical roadblock in constructing idealised distributed systems is, in fact, a non-issue for all practical concerns? Has anyone experienced a network partition within one of these systems (within a single data-centre?) If so would you be willing to share any details?

I m working on wso2 admin services. I get url as http://localhost:9763/services/AuthenticationAdmin?wsdl for AuthencticationAdmin. Now, when I hit the login operation, with admin,admin,127.0.0.1, I get true as return. ESB console shows logged in. Now, when I hit logout operation, I dont get any response. Also I notice that header of the response does not contain any session ID. 0down voteaccept My ESB is 4.6.0. login request : <soapenv:Envelope xmlns:soapenv="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" xmlns:aut="http://authentication.services.core.carbon.wso2.org"> <soapenv:Header/> <soapenv:Body> <aut:login> <!--Optional:--> <aut:username>admin</aut:username> <!--Optional:--> <aut:password>admin</aut:password> <!--Optional:--> <aut:remoteAddress>127.0.0.1</aut:remoteAddress> </aut:login> </soapenv:Body> </soapenv:Envelope> login response <soapenv:Envelope xmlns:soapenv="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/"> <soapenv:Body> <ns:loginResponse xmlns:ns="http://authentication.services.core.carbon.wso2.org"> <ns:return>true</ns:return> </ns:loginResponse> </soapenv:Body> </soapenv:Envelope> In the response, when I hit login I see, at bottom I only get 6 elements in header as follows : > Date Tue, 25 Jun 2013 14:31:42 GMT > > Transfer-Encoding chunked > > #status# HTTP/1.1 200 OK > > Content-Type text/xml; charset=UTF-8 > > Connection Keep-Alive > > Server WSO2-PassThrough-HTTP Now, I dont get session ID. Can you please point out where m I going wrong? My scenario is that I want to login to WSO2 and then hit some other admin service operation.
