• how to check the first time user of my App in android?

  hi all, In my App, first it shows a splash screen. after that another activity, then my main activity must be show. this is my design plan. the second activity(i.e before main activity) must be show for the first time user of the app. if he/she closes the app.splash screen will redirect to main activity automatically. how to do this ? Any Idea? i am developing my app for android phones.

• UITextField showing trash instead of characters

  There's quite a strange thing happening to text fields in application I'm developing (see image below).  [1]: http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/1449/zrzutekranu20100506godz.png At some point in the application I'm using    - (void) viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated { [super viewWillAppear:animated]; [[(TextFieldView*)[self view] usernameTextField] becomeFirstResponder];    } Which results in the above image. If it's called in viewDidAppear - everything is fine. The funny thing about this error is that it breaks ALL text fields throught the application. Has anyone ever encountered such an error? Might it be related to openGL use?

• Is it ok to store large objects (java component for example) in an Application variable?

  I am developing an app right now which creates and stores a connection to a local XMPP server in the Application scope. The connection methods are stored in a cfc that makes sure the Application.XMPPConnection is connected and authorized each time it is used, and makes use of the connection to send live events to users. As far as I can tell, this is working fine. BUT it hasn't been tested under any kind of stress. My question is: Will this set up cause problems later on? I only ask because I can't find evidence of other people using Application variables in this way. If I weren't using railo I would be using CF's event gateway instead to accomplish the same task.

  I am developing a django project. I created some apps, some of those are related to User model, for instance, I have a feeds app that handles user feeds, and another app that deals with extra user data like age, contacts, and friends. for each of these, I created a table that should be connected to the User model, which I using for storing and authenticating users. I found two ways to deal with this issue. One, is through extending User model to be like this: ModelName(User): friends = models.ManyToMany('self') ..... Two, is through adding a foreign key to the new table like this: ModelName(models.Model): user = models.ForeignKey(User, unique=True) friends = friends = models.ManyToMany('self') ...... I can't decide which to use in which case. in other words, what are the core differences between both?

• Silverlight caching HTTP POST which results in a 404

  Situation: I am developing a Silverlight-Application which needs Component based on a local HTTP Listener. The HTTP-Listener can't be 'required' to be installed and running when the Application starts, so the Application does the following: Handshake via HTTP POST If Connection failed open a Click-Once Setup to install the component. So far so good.... now the Problem is: If the HTTP POST for the Handshake fails, because the Listener is not running the POST is cached.... and the following Connection Attempts after the Service is running fail, because the HTTP POST is still in Cache after the first try. NOTE: This is NOT a policy-problem. I'm using SL4 PS: I allready tried adding a random parameter to the URL like First try: Second try: didn't work :-(

  Hello, my friend has a Real Estate company that receives a lot of phone calls everyday. He wants to have a solution such that when somebody call to his company, the operator sees all the information about the person who is calling based on the database he have right now and the caller ID. Is there a ready made software or solution that can do the job?? Since I'm a software engineer myself, I would never mind developing something from scratch or built on a ready made system (with a team of course), but I need some direction on how to start?? • Forcing a method to be non-transactional in JPA (Eclipselink)

  Hi, I am developing an application using Eclipselink and as part of the app I need to be able to manipulate some of the objects which involves changing data without it being persisted to the database (i merging/changing objects for some batch generation processes). I am reluctant to change the data in the Entity objects, as there is a risk that even though i have not marked the methods as @Transactional, this method could in the future be inadvertantly called from within a transactional method and these changes could be persisted. So my question is, is there anyway to get around this? Such as force a method to always be non-transactional regardless; terminate any transactionality as soon as the method is started; etc. I know there is a .detach() method that can detach the objects from the Entity Manager, however, there are many objects and this seems like a potentially error prone fail-safe on my code.

• Is MDI Form focused?

  I've had so much luck developing my application... until now. My application's main form is a MDI parent, and I didn't think of adding any MDI children in my tests until tonight. To my surprise, the MDI parent seems to never "get focus" now. The Focus event and the OnFocus method are never called! I mean... it appears focused but none of the in-code focusing events/methods work. Instead a MDI child reports the focus. How do I fix this?

  PLEASE READ THE FULL QUESTION BEFORE POST YOUR ANSWER Hello guys! I'm currently developing a "Extremelly customized Installer Application" in C# for installing a old classic ASP application. It'll be used during the 2.0 version is developed (ASP.NET MVC with C#). As its so different from the efault install packages, I've made it as normal windows application, not as setup application (a setup application don't let us customize so much as I need). And here is the problem: As its a windows application, I must "Release" it and send the compiled .EXE with the .DLLs, I must not "Publish" because if i do so, the published .EXE will "install the installer" and not my application. I need a way to verify and install the .NET Framework 3.5 like a bootstrap package prerequisite used in publishing option, but remember that I'm not publishing, I'm doing a "Release" build.   I'm developing a new aspnet website with 200k images in a /Images/ -folder. Many operations in Visual Studio is slow because it access the folder, adding a web service takes 10 minutes. The images is not checked into scm (svn). How should I structure the tree of code, to improve performance in VS? It would also be neat if not all developers needed to copy 200k images to their local disk to be able to develop on the site. Images as DB blobs is not an option.

• Strategy for desugaring Haskell

  I'm developing a virtual machine for purely functional programs, and I would like to be able to test and use the the wide variety of Haskell modules already available. The VM takes as input essentially terms in the untyped lambda calculus. I'm wondering what would be a good way to extract such a representation from modern Haskell modules (eg. with MPTC's, pattern guards, etc.). I did a little research and there doesn't seem to be a tool that does this already (I would be delighted to be mistaken), and that's okay. I'm looking for an approach. GHC Core seems too operationally focused, especially since one of the things the VM does is to change the evaluation order significantly. Are there any accessible intermediate representations that correspond more closely to the lambda calculus?

• Is it a good idea to close and open hibernate sessions frequently?

  Hi, I'm developing an application which requires that state of entities be read from a database at frequent intervals or triggers. However, once hibernate reads the state, it doesn't re-read it unless I explicitly close the session and read the entity in a new session. Is it a good idea to open a session everytime I want to read the entity and then close it afterwards? How much of an overhead does this put on the application and the database (we use a c3p0 connection pool also)? Will it be enough to simply evict the entity from the session before reading it again?

  I have a site, e.g. site.com I would like users to be able to access it in their locale at site.com/somecity This is similar to craigslist, but they do it with subdomains e.g. sfbay.craigslist.org Using Apache HTTP server. MySql for DB. If you can provide a brief explanation and perhaps links to more thorough discussions, I would be quite interested in learning.   I'm developing commercial CMS running on Google App Engine. I'm thinking of selling it in two ways: 1) Software as a service (SaS). The CMS running in my App Engine account (as single app), hosting the sites of all customers. A turn-key solution for "end user" customers. 2) Licence for running the CMS in customer's own App Engine account. Targeted for digital agencies for reselling as SaS. Being not a lawyer myself, I don't trust my abilities to read between the lines of TOS jargon. Counting on the general knowledge of SO community, my question is: do the above scenarios violate the App Engine Terms of Service?

• How to analyse Dalvik GC behaviour?

  I am developing an application on Android. It is a long running application that continuously processes sensor data. While running the application I see a lot of GC messages in the logcat; about one every second. This is most probably because of objects being created and immediately de-referenced in a loop. How do I find which objects are being created and released immediately? All the java heap analysis tools that I have tried(*) are bothered with the counts and sizes of objects on the heap. While they are useful, I am more interested in finding out the site where temporary short-lived objects get created the most. (*) I tried jcat and Eclipse MAT. I couldn't get hat to work on the Android heap-dumps; it complained of an unsupported dump file version.

• Is node.js ready for production use?

We need HTTPS and gzip compression - perhaps a front end nginx server could provide this? What's missing from node.js that would make developing a web app difficult? • Any reason why I shouldn't use couchdb for message passing or realtime activity streams?

  While using ampq or xmpp (rabbitmq or ejabbered that could have couchdb as backends) seems like a good fit to deliver real time updates about friend state in a social gaming platform where updates are small but frequent, I can't help but think why wouldn't couchdb be a good platform to deliver such updates? The main advantage I could think of is its ability to filter updates based on friends and availability of changes api, which makes developing such an application and managing it (including replication) quite easy compared to ampq or xmpp where you have to think about how to manage the pubsub nodes and who is subscribed to them at any point in time. However, I can't help but think this is too good to be true, I can't find information on what couchdb's shortcomings are. Somehow, it feels like using MySQL for message passing which is why I am hesitant to using it. Anyone have any experience in using couchdb for such applications? would you recommend another platform to use?

The next step is to package that program and deploy it to an application server. Some clients program will submit requests to the server who will call the tool that I wrote. Lately, we will add more tools to the server and he has to dispatch the requests to the right tool. Which application server fits my needs ? I have looked for Tomcat, Jetty and Glassfish but it seems that they are only used for web application. Is it possible to use those servers in some context different from web context? Which package archive should i use (jar, war) ? Any advice?

  Hello, I'm developing an project, which consists in a webservice and a client application. It's a fair simple scenario. The webservice is connected to a database server, and the client consumes from the webserver in order to get information retrieved from the database. The thing is: 1. The client application can only display data after a previous authentication; 2. All the data transferred between Web Service and clients must be confidential; 3. Data integrity shouldn’t be compromised; I'm wondering what is the best way to achieve these requirements. The first thing I thought about, was sending the server a digital signature containing a client certificate, to be stored in the server, and used as comparison for authentication. But I investigated a little about webservice security, and I'm no longer certain that this is the best option. Can anyone give me an opinion about this? TIA

• Is a Service Bus a good option to communicate with multiple external servers?

  We are developing an application that communicates, via web services or TCP/IP sockets, with multiple servers (up to 50 different external companies). Basically, the exchanged messages are the same (XML), but depending on the inputs of our application we should call 1 or more external servers. The benefits we would expect of introducing a Service Bus in the architecture would be: 1- Remove the need to manage all point-to-point configurations (all the 50 endpoints); 2- Simplify the communication layer of our application by having only one server to talk to; Is a Service Bus a good architectural option for this scenario? What is the best (simplest) Service Bus for this kind of communication? I read a few MSDN articles on Azure Service Bus Relay, but it didn’t seem to fit our needs. Am I wrong? Thanks for your help.

• UITableView cellForRowAtIndexPath occasionally not called?

  I'm developing a graphing application that on the main navigation/tab view displays a UIView that renders a graph using openGL. Beneath that view is a UITableView that displays the list of elements on the graph, and an add button. Occasionally, when the user clicks on another tab, and then returns to the graph view tab, the table view does not get redrawn. I have a [tableView reloadData] method being called in the navigation controllers' (also the table view's delegate and data source) viewDidAppear method. numberOfSectionsInTableView and numberOfRowsInSection get called, but cellForRowAtIndexPath does not despite both latter methods returning positive values. This is an intermittant problem, only happening some of the time, but it's not clear what (if anything) influences this. Does anyone have any ideas?
