  I have a node.js application running behind an Apache mod_rewrite proxy configured in a .htaccess file like this: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} =mydomain.com [OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} =www.mydomain.com RewriteRule (.*) http://localhost:3000/$1 [QSA,P] When I now do a redirect (e.g. express' res.redirect()) inside my node.js application (which runs on port 3000), the user is always redirected to http://localhost:3000/ (which is in fact exactly what is defined above but not the desired behaviour). Is there any way around this?

  Chrome: Bookmark Sentry, a free Chrome extension, takes the hard work out of checking your bookmark file for bad links and duplicates. Install it, forget about it, and get scheduled reports on the state of your bookmarks file. It’s that simple. Once you install the extension, open the options to toggle some basic settings to your liking (like the frequency of the scan, how long you want it to wait for a response, and whether you want it to look for bad links and/or duplicates). Once it finishes scanning you’ll get a report indicating the status of the links (why they are marked as missing or duped) and the ability to selectively or mass delete them. The only caveat we’d share is that it will tell you links behind any sort of security are unavailable. If you bookmark pages that you use for work, behind your corporate firewall for example, if the scanner runs when you’re not authenticated then it won’t be able to reach them. • Best suited multi-function printer for Linux usage from a few choices

  I want a cheap multi-function printer for Linux usage. I'm looking for rock solid scanning and printing that works with big images. I'd prefer drivers that are available in Debian, or other drivers that are open source, but will settle for proprietary drivers if they are well contained and clean. Some choices I have are: Samsung SCX-4300 HP LaserJet M1120 MFP Samsung SCX-4500 Canon i-SENSYS MF4010 Brother DCP-7040 I am also interested in opinions what printer communication language is best for Linux usage for cheap printers. PostScript is nice, of course, but low-end PostScript printers often have problems when printing complex (large) PostScript files. It seems Samsung printers use SPL for communication, HP uses XQX and ZJS, then there's ofcourse PCL.

• Determining Performance Limits

  I have a number of windows processes that pass messages between them hat a high rate using tcp to local host. Aside from testing on actual hardware how can I assess what my hardware limit will be. These applications are not doing CPU intensive work, mostly decomposing and combining messages, scanning over them for special flag in the data etc.. The message size is typically 3k and the rate is typically ~10k messages per second. ~30MB per second between processing stages. There may be 10 or more stages depending. For this type of application, what should I look to for assessing performance? What do I look for in a server performance wise? I am currently running an XEON L5408 with 32 GB ram. But I am assuming cache is more important than actual ram size as I am barely touching the ram.

• Why do people crawl sites without downloading pictures?

  Let me show you what I mean: IP Pages Hits Bandwidth 85.xx.xx.xxx 236 236 735.00 KB 195.xx.xxx.xx 164 164 533.74 KB 95.xxx.xxx.xxx 90 90 293.47 KB It's very clear that these person are crawling my site with bots. There's no way that you could visit my site and use <1MB bandwidth. You might say that there's the possibility that they could be browsing the site using some browser or plug-in that does not download images, js/css files, etc., but the simple fact of the matter is that there are not 90-236 pages that are linked from the home page (outside of WP files), even if you visited every page twice. I could understand if these people were crawling the site for pictures, but once again, the bandwidth indicates that this isn't what is happening. Why, then, would they crawl the site to simply view the HTML/txt/js/etc. files? The only thing that I can come up with is that they are scanning for outdated versions of WordPress, SQL injection vulnerabilities, etc., which makes me inclined to outright ban the IPs, but I'm curious, is it possible that this person is a legitimate user, or at the very least, not intending to be harmful?

• Desktop installation fails on Dell Precision T1600 with Nvidia Quadro card?

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop on a Dell Precision T1600, however, I get a blank screen with only a blinking cursor in the top left hand corner (this is after the grey screen with the small Ubuntu logo at the bottom). If I remove the Nvidia Quadro 2000 card and plug a monitor into the built-in VGA port, then the installation works fine. Also, I've tried an Nvidia Quadro 2000D by PNY, but I get the same problem. Has anyone installed Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop on a Dell Precision workstation?

• Test your internet connection - Emtel Mobile Internet

  After yesterday's report on Emtel Fixed Broadband (I'm still wondering where the 'fixed' part is), I did the same tests on Emtel Mobile Internet. For this I'm using the Huawei E169G HSDPA USB stick, connected to the same machine. Actually, this is my fail-safe internet connection and the system automatically switches between them if a problem, let's say timeout, etc. has been detected on the main line. For better comparison I used exactly the same servers on Speedtest.net. The results Following are the results of Rose Hill (hosted by Emtel) and respectively Frankfurt, Germany (hosted by Vodafone DE): Speedtest.net result of 31.05.2013 between Flic en Flac and Rose Hill, Mauritius (Emtel - Mobile Internet) Speedtest.net result of 31.05.2013 between Flic en Flac and Frankfurt, Germany (Emtel - Mobile Internet) As you might easily see, there is a big difference in speed between national and international connections. More interestingly are the results related to the download and upload ratio. I'm not sure whether connections over Emtel Mobile Internet are asymmetric or symmetric like the Fixed Broadband. Might be interesting to find out. The first test result actually might give us a clue that the connection could be asymmetric with a ratio of 3:1 but again I'm not sure. I'll find out and post an update on this. It depends on network coverage Later today I was on tour with my tablet, a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (model GT-P7500) running on Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and did some more tests using the Speedtest.net app. The results are actually as expected and in areas with better network coverage you will get better results after all. At least, as long as you stay inside the national networks. For anything abroad, it doesn't really matter. But see for yourselves: Speedtest.net result of 31.05.2013 between Cascavelle and servers in Rose Hill, Mauritius (Emtel - Mobile Internet), Port Louis, Mauritius and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia It's rather shocking and frustrating to see how the speed on international destinations goes down. And the full capability of the tablet's integrated modem (HSDPA: 21 Mbps; HSUPA: 5.76 Mbps) isn't used, too. I guess, this demands more tests in other areas of the island, like Ebene, Pailles or Port Louis. I'll keep you updated... The question remains: Alternatives? After the publication of the test results on Fixed Broadband I had some exchange with others on Facebook. Sadly, it seems that there are really no alternatives to what Emtel is offering at the moment. There are the various internet packages by Mauritius Telecom feat. Orange, like ADSL, MyT and Mobile Internet, and there is Bharat Telecom with their Bees offer which is currently limited to Ebene and parts of Quatre Bornes.

• Can I make Apache drop a connection when matching a URL?

  Using mod_rewrite I can construct a rule to respond with a clean error code (e.g. 404 not found, 410 gone, or 403 unauthorised) when a page is requested that I don't want to serve. But frequently I get completely erroneous requests from hackers scanning my website for vulnerabilities or possibly cross-site scripting attempts. For these customers I do not want to return a clean error - I'd rather do something else like immediately drop the connection with no response or, alternatively, hold the connection open for a lengthy period of time to frustrate the automated process. Any ideas how to accomplish this with Apache? I've read that nginx has the ability to immediately terminate a connection when a particular pattern is matched.

  I try to run a game under dosbox, but it has no sound, and in the terminal dosbox says: MIXER:Can't open audio: No available audio device , running in nosound mode. ALSA:Can't subscribe to MIDI port (65:0) nor (17:0) MIDI:Opened device:none Update I changed the ports to 128:0 in the dosbox config file and now it says ALSA:Client initialised [128:0] MIDI:Opened device:alsa but still no sound :(

  I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my acer netbook D255E, its currently running a crucial SSD 256G 500read 333write and a 2G RAM card with the crappy Intel Atom processor. i'm fairly new to Ubuntu and I cant get the system to even acknowledge I plugged the Arduino Uno microcontroller connected to the USB port. can anyone offer a solution to this, I've read up on a few how-tos online on my desktop but they're all for older versions of ubuntu.

  I got EXTREMELY lucky last week and won an HP Mini 311 notebook from a Microsoft Tag Twitter contest. I did my required tweet to enter last Tuesday, and one hour later received notification that I had won the weekly drawing. Apparently you can tweet up to 500 times (I pity the followers of those who do that), so it was really lucky that I won, and I sympathize with those who had been really trying. I was vaguely aware of those pastel-y triangle-y square things that look like someone put one of Don Johnson’s Miami Vice outfits through a shredder, and knew that the company I work for (one of the world’s largest consumer products companies) was looking into putting them on our products, packaging and advertising, but didn’t know much more about the technology. I thought they were just an improvement over bar codes, and would be used in retail store scanners, but I was mistaken. These tags are meant to be scanned by consumers using their mobile phones, to get instant access to information, websites, reviews, etc. Scanning a tag can open a web page, import a contact card, or dial a phone number, play a video… Tag reader software can be installed on Windows Mobile, iPhone, Symbian, Blackberry, Android, J2ME, and other phones (and I suspect that it will be available for Windows Phone 7 also :). There are built-in tracking, metrics and analysis tools, to help companies using Tag make decisions about their marketing expenditures. (And they don’t have to look Miami Vice-y – They can be customized to reflect the personality of the person or a brand.) Looks like interesting stuff.   I was scanning my Mac OS X with sophos antivirus and opened the console. I see this over and over again. How do I tell whatever it is to stop trying to launch tuncfg? • XNA 4.0 2D sidescroller variable terrain heightmap for walking/collision

  I've been fooling around with moving on sloped tiles in XNA and it is semi-working but not completely satisfactory. I also have been thinking that having sets of predetermined slopes might not give me terrain that looks "organic" enough. There is also the problem of having to construct several different types of tile for each slope when they're chained together (only 45 degree tiles will chain perfectly as I understand it). I had thought of somehow scanning for connected chains of sloped tiles and treating it as a new large triangle, as I was having trouble with glitching at the edges where sloped tiles connect. But, this leads back to the problem of limiting the curvature of the terrain. So...what I'd like to do now is create a simple image or texture of the terrain of a level (or section of the level) and generate a simple heightmap (of the Y's for each X) for the terrain. The player's Y position would then just be updated based on their X position. Is there a simple way of doing this (or a better way of solving this problem)? The main problem I can see with this method is the case where there are areas above the ground that can be walked on. Maybe there is a way to just map all walkable ground areas? I've been looking at this helpful bit of code: http://thirdpartyninjas.com/blog/2010/07/28/sloped-platform-collision/ but need a way to generate the actual points/vectors.

• Splitting a texture atlas into seperate images

  I'm doing a port of an existing game and the designer no longer has all of the original art; he only has the resulting texture atlases he used when developing for iPad. The tool I'm using won't support these files so I need to break them back out into separate PNG files. I'm hoping someone knows of a software tool that does this. PC software would be preferred in this case, but Mac would suffice.

• Having trouble with EPSON Stylus SX130 scanner

  I am trying to scan files with an EPSON Stylus SX130 on windows 7 x64. When i plug in the printer, windows automatically find drivers for printing, but not for scanning. So i go to the manufacturer website to download the drivers, select windows 7 64-bit and download drivers for EPSON Scan. The install works fine, but when i try to scan a file (eg: from paint or Windows fax and scan), the folowing message pops up and freezes the application : the progress bar plays the animation forever and the application does not respond. I then have no choice to kill the application with the task manager. Do you have an idea of what's going on ? How can i fix the problem, ie: how do i get the scanner actually scan files without freezing ? I tried to install the driver from the CD given in the printer package, and got the same problem. The only help i found so far (the error seems somewhat related) is this : Install a xp virtual machine and run it in there
