• SEO Benefits of adding a Tumblr feed to site

  A client of ours has a CMS driven Blog in his hotel site - he would like to use the blog to add depth top his site and add seo benefits relating to the blogs content. The current blog is a basic header / text field and doesn't contain any tagging / meta features. Unfortunately we dont have a .net developer in our team to alter the existing blog and add meta / tagging and there isn't budget to hire one - so I considered using a Tumblr blog - setting it up externally - giving it a blog.hotelname.com address and feeding it into the existing page via tumblrs js - which basically does a document.write into the page - which we can style. I understand from a previous post (Poor CMS blog vs Tumblr embed as a general rule most search engines ignore JS created content - but will the above approach act as an improvement on the existing system for now - as the blog will be setup externally with its own url and also feed into the existing site?   Previously I created a website for promo codes and coupons. That have hundreds of external links to the Retailer's websites and I used rel="nofollow" tag. But my site SEO rank was very very... bad especially on Google. So then I removed the rel="nofollow" tag, but no improvement. The only difference between this site and my other sites is "External links". My other sites have good ranking on Google. Now I'm creating a site for reviews. So this is also similar situation for me. I just want to know about how does SEO react with external links? and then what possibly happened in my case?

• Software bug/defect classification

  We're trying to come up with terms that better describe our bugs/defects. To us, the term 'bug' or 'defect' is too generic and doesn't accurately reflect what is happening. For example, instead of saying that there is a bug (in the general sense), we'd rather say what type of bug (an error, or enhancement, or improvement, etc.). What names do you use for describing 'bugs'? We found http://www.softwaredevelopment.ca/bugs.shtml which has some pretty good classifications. How do you classify them?

• What effect does using itemprop="significantLinks" on anchors have for SEO?

  So as I've described in a previous post about span tags within head tags, I'm practicing application of microdata via http://schema.org. Anyone who's browsed the documentation there knows that there's a lot of need for improvement for more clear understandings on use for each property. My question on this post is more about the "significantLinks" property and how it effects SEO for on page, in content anchored text. Does anyone have any more information regarding whether its good to use for link optimization? I understand what schema.org means that it's to be used on "non-navigational links" and those links should be relevant to the current page's meaning. But will using this property hurt SEO or make SEO better for each page? Thanks in advance, as by answering this with accurate information you are helping not just me, but many people who are trying to make their customers more successful through helping their rank for relevant keywords to their business, bringing them more search engine traffic.

  I am wondering what are the chances of a career shifter (mid 20's), who have maybe 3-6 months programming experience vs. younger fresh IT/Com Sci graduates. You see, even though I really love programming (Java/J2EE), but nobody gives me a feedback when I apply online. maybe because they preferred IT/ComSci graduates vs a career shifter like me.. So can you advice on how to improve my chance on being hired. How can i get a real-job programming experince if nobody is hiring me. I can make my own projects (working e-commerce site blah blah) but it is still different from the real job. And my codes are working but it still needs a lot of improvement and no one can tell me how to improve it because no one sees it (because I'm doing it alone?). • Ubercart for 'serious' ecommerce?

  Im big Drupal fan, and some very high profile sites use Drupal which also suggests that its a good system. Can the same be said for Ubercart? Ive used it for some small e commerce sites purely because I know Drupal. It seems to lack some basic features and also relies on javascript. I dont know of any high profile e commerce sites using it. My productivity would take a big hit if I had to learn a new e commerce platform and also if I couldn't use my favorite CMS with it, but do I have a choice? If not I guess I can hope that Drupal 7's Commerce module will be an improvement. Thanks

• How can I make a case for "dependency management"?

  I'm currently trying to make a case for adopting dependency management for builds (ala Maven, Ivy, NuGet) and creating an internal repository for shared modules, of which we have over a dozen enterprise wide. What are the primary selling points of this build technique? The ones I have so far: Eases the process of distributing and importing shared modules, especially version upgrades. Requires the dependencies of shared modules to be precisely documented. Removes shared modules from source control, speeding and simplifying checkouts/check ins (when you have applications with 20+ libraries this is a real factor). Allows more control or awareness of what third party libs are used in your organization. Are there any selling points that I'm missing? Are there any studies or articles giving improvement metrics?

• Paren-free PHP? [on hold]

  I stumbled upon the idea for paren-free ecmascript (https://brendaneich.com/2010/11/paren-free/), which is inspired by Go language. And it's simple, clean and cool - if you make braces required instead of recommended (and they are recommended everywhere anyway: http://www.php-fig.org/psr/psr-2/), then parenthesis are unneeded around control structure “heads”. It would work exactly the same in PHP. So, a piece of PHP code could look like this: if $someVar == 42 { doSomething(); } or: foreach $someArray as $key => $value { echo "$key: $value"; } It's a small, but nice step towards a nicer, cleaner syntax and removing unnecessary parts. The question is - would PHP community be willing to see the languange move in that direction? Would it be considered an improvement by majority, or are we too used to typing those parenthesis and unwilling to see any change in PHP syntax?

  Re-Sharper is an excellent aid to producing good code in either C# or VB.NET. Recently through using Resharper and StyleCop, I have found three area where ReSharper needs to be improved. When Resharper removes a redundant else, there needs to be a blank line added. Currently there is no provision to specify this. Please vote for this! Why not offer the same for a static constructor?  Please vote for this! • Temenos WealthManager: performance benchmark on Exadata

  Temenos WealthManager is at work in financial institutions of all sizes. No matter the size, each of Temenos’ customers has one requirement in common: a need for fast technology. This led Temenos to conduct a performance benchmark, running its WealthManager platform on Oracle Exadata Database Machine. During the study, Temenos executed high-intensity financial engines two- to three-times faster than its previous internal benchmarks and/or largest customer throughput. The company also demonstrated greater than two-times the average improvement in response times for six-times the number of users and data volumes. Further, Temenos secured a two-times gain in service-level agreements for batch and user-oriented workloads via dedicated or parallelized processing windows. Last year Temenos also communicated the availability of its T24 core banking system and how the benchmark run demonstrated the ability of Oracle’s Exadata platform to comfortably support the highest banking volumes for T24.   In my quest to keep my fingers on the pulse of MDM, I recently found a pretty interesting article.  The article was published in Information Week and provides some interesting statistics from a recent survey conducted by the analyst firm, The Information Difference.  Let's take a look: Of the 130 organizations surveyed, 53% have live operational MDM implementations 81% of those with live operational MDM implementations report broad success - a huge improvement over 2011's 54% 64% developed a business case prior to their MDM deployment, while a daring 32% went ahead without a business case.    The article goes on to talk about the shift in vendors from focusing on customer data and product information management to one that is oriented around multi-domain master data management as well as other realities around MDM.  Take a look at the article. • Archiving your contact form data.

  I get TONS of email from customer. Over time, this email helps me to determine what areas in our product collection are opportunities for enhancement or improvement. I store the email that comes from my blog contact form in folders and then search through them looking for trends periodically. It occurred to me that, while I need to get the emails because many of them are actionable, it would be great if I could use reporting and analysis tools against the collection. • Running external commands improved a bit

  Hi all, today we would like to show you one small improvement related to running external commands (e.g. generating documentation, running framework commands etc.) which will be available in NetBeans 7.3. First, have a look at the screenshot: As you can see, the first line represents the command that is being executed. In case of any error, this command can be easily copy & pasted to the console for deeper investigation (and proper bug reports ;). Also please notice that the Output window now supports background colors. That's all for today, as always, please test it and report all the issues or enhancements you find in NetBeans Bugzilla (component php, subcomponent Code).
