  • JAVA-SQL- Data Migration - ResultSets comparing Failing JUnit test

    I CANNOT get this JUnit Test to pass for the life of me. Can somebody point out where this has gone wrong. I am doing a data migration(MSSQL SERVER 2005), but I have the sourceDBUrl and the targetDCUrl the same URL so to narrow it down to syntax errors. So that is what I have, a syntax error. I am comparing the results of a table for the query SELECT programmeapproval, resourceapproval FROM tr_timesheet WHERE timesheetid = ? and the test always fails, but passes for other junit tests I have developed. I created 3 diffemt resultSetsEqual methods and none work. Yet, some other JUnit tests I have developed have PASSED. THE QUERY: SELECT timesheetid, programmeapproval, resourceapproval FROM tr_timesheet Returns three columns timesheetid (PK,int, not null) (populated with a range of numbers 2240 - 2282) programmeapproval (smallint,not null) (populated with the number 1 in every field) resourceapproval (smallint, not null) (populated with a number 1 in every field) When I run the query that is embedded in the code it only returns one row with the programmeapproval and resourceapproval columns and both field populated with the number 1. I have all jdbc drivers correctly installed and tested for connectivity.   • Difficulty restoring a differential backup in SQL Server, 2 media families are expected or no files

    I have sql backups copied from server A to server B on a nightly basis. We want to move the sql server from server A to server B without much downtime, but the files are very large. I assumed that performing a differential backup and restore would solve the problem with the databases. Copy full backup from server A to copy to server B (10+gb) Open SQL Server Managment Studio on server B Right mouse on databases Restore Database Type in the new DB-name Choose "From Device" and browse to the backup file Click Okay. This is now resorting the original "full" backup. Test new db with dev application - everything works :) On original database rightmouse on DB Tasks Backup... Backup Type = Differential, Backup to disk, add a new file, and remove the old one (it needs to be a small file to transfer for the smallest amount of outage) Copy the diff backup onto the new db Right mouse on DB Tasks Restore Database This is where I get stuck. If I add both the new differential file, and the original backup to the restore process I get an error The media loaded on "M:\path\to\backup\full.bak" is formatted to support 1 media families, but 2 media families are expected according to the backup device specification. RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. But if I try to restore using just the differential file I get System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The log or differential backup cannot be restored because no files are ready to rollforward. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) Any idea how to do it? Is there a better way of restoring backups with limited downtime?

    Hi there, I have a question regarding the transaction log backups in sql server 2008. I am currently taking full backups once a week (Sunday) and transaction log backups daily. I put full backup in folder1 on Sunday and then on Monday I also put the 1st transaction log backup in the same folder. On tuesday, before I take the 2nd transaction log backup I move the first transaction log backup from folder1 an put it into folder2 and then I take the 2nd transaction log backup and put it in the folder1. Same thing on Wed, Thurs and so on. Basicaly in folder1 I always have the latest full backup and the latest transaction log backup while the other transaction log backups are in folder2. My questions is, when sql server is about to take, lets say 4th (Thursday) transaction log backup, does it look for the previous transac log backups (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) so that this new backup will only include the transactions from the last backup or it has some other way of knowing whether there are other transac log backups. Basically, I am asking this because all my transaction log backups seem to be about the same size and I thought that their size will depend on the amount of transactions since the last transaction log backup. Example: If you have a, lets say, full backup and then you take a transac log backup and this transac log backup is lets say 200 MB and now you immediatelly take another transac log backup, this last transac log backup should be considerably smaller than the first one because no or almost no transaction occured between these two backups, right? At least, that's what I've been assuming. What happens in my case is that this second backup is pretty much the same size as the first one and I am wondering if the reason for that is because I moved the first transac log backup to a different folder so now sql server thinks that all I have is just a full backup and it then gets all the transactions that happened since the full backup and puts it in the 2nd transac log backup. Can anyone please explain if my assumptions are right? Thanks...

  • SQL Server 2008 login problem with ASP.NET application: Failed to open the explicitly specified data

    I am running SQL Server 2008 Express Edition on Windows Server 2008 with an ASP.NET application which must access the server. The ASP.NET application is associated with an application pool that runs on the NetworkService account. This account in turn has a Login and User record on SQL Server in the required database. When I attempt to run the ASP.NET website I get a blank page and when viewed in the error log, I seem to be getting this information event record: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database. [CLIENT: myLocalMachine] The connection string has Trusted_Connection=True; and the required database specified. When I explicitly specify the user name and password I get another login error stating the password is incorrect, even though the same un/pw combination works through SQL Server Management studio. The NETWORK SERVICE account seems to have all the required privileges for the database. Also, I made a test ASP.NET website project which does a simple select from a table in that database, and using the same config file I am not getting the error and it seems to work. Is it something to do with trust levels then, because the original ASP.NET web app references various DLLs including open source libraries. Also, the application does not seem to be able to write to the event log itself, throwing a security exception, even though everything in the config files, including machine.config states the app is in full trust.

  • Latency between IIS and SQL on same physical, two VMs

    I have a single server (2x4 core CPUs, 32GB ram), that is a Windows Server 2012 Hyper V host, and it hosts two guest VMs (also Windows Server 2012 instances). One of them is a web server, the other is a SQL server. When hitting a page that loops over 50 records, there is noticeable latency. I capture/report the timings of each iteration on the loop, and each iteration is about 20-30 milliseconds. Of course, this amounts to over a second of latency for the whole loop. I thought maybe SQL needed to be tuned, but running profiler on it, the queries are showing almost 0 duration, so it seems the bottleneck is in transit between the two VMs. I have both VMs configured to use the actual NIC (vs. using a VNIC), so maybe that's part of my problem. Also, this is a classic ASP site, so it's using the SQL OLE DB provider, and I'm wondering if that is part of the problem. This is a new server setup, from an existing Windows 2003/IIS6 server setup where both web and DB run on the same server instance (no virtualization). On that setup, there is no such latency when looping over the cursor like this. But there are so many variables, I'm not sure where to start ruling things out.

    I am dealing with electronic personal health information (ePHI or PHI) and HIPAA regulations require that only authorized users can access ePHI. Column-level encryption may be of value for some of the data, but I need the ability to do like searches on some of the PHI fields such as name. Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) is a feature of SQL Server 2008 for encrypting database and log files. As I understand it this prevents someone who gains access to the MDF, LDF, or backup files from being able to do anything with the files because they are encrypted. TDE is only on enterprise and developer versions of SQL Server and enterprise is cost-prohibitive for my particular scenario. How can I get similar protection on SQL Server Standard? Is there a way to encrypt the database and backup files (is there a third-party tool)? Or just as good, is there a way to prevent the files from being used if the disk were attached to another machine (linux or windows)? Administrator access to the files from the same machine is fine, but I just want to prevent any issues if the disk were removed and hooked up to another machine. What are some of the solutions for this that are out there?

After some research I found some info : Usually this error means that the SQL Server Service Principal Name (SPN) was not configured, and NTLM was not being used as an authentication mechanism. SQl services are runing under different domain accounts. So, I asked the domain admin to create SPNs for the servers, SQL service accounts for beoth source and destination using name and FQDN. enabled computer name and service accounts for delegation.   • Upgrading from SQL2000 database to SQL Express 2008 R2

    Hi, We have a web application which uses a MSSQL 2000 backend database. We are currently paying a ridiculous amount for Shared Hosting, with the database costs alone costing us $150 per month (MSSQL 100mb extra space is $40 per month). Our database size is 896.38 MB I am looking at getting a Virtual Private Server and upgrading the database to a MSSQL2008 Express database. I am aware that the Express version is limited to a 10GB database (with R2), and is constrained to a single CPU. I have also been offered SQL Server 2008 Web Edition for $19/per month, but I cannot find many details on the difference between Express and Web. Any suggestions here? What I would also like to know is: If we upgrade the database to MSSQL 2008 database, is there any issues with possible data transformations in the future? I.e. Is it possible to download and mount it with SQL Server 2008 Standard edition? I'm more concerned about how to get data in and out of the database through SQL Management tools. Are there any other issues that I might face? Thanks, Mike

  • Intermittent unavailability of an instance in a failover cluster while a standby node is offline in

    Hi everyone. I've got a small failover cluster that I run for the websites my company has. During a RAM upgrade of the standby server, our websites started to show errors about not being able to access the database server. I verified that the instance was indeed up and the server accessable via remote desktop. I also tried a SQL connection to it and it worked, but that might have been after it became available again. This happened on and off until we were able to roll back the hardware changes that were in progress on the standby server and we were able to bring it back up. There was nothing of interest in the SQL Server log, but there is a continous log for the whole duration of the problem, so there was no restart of the SQL Server service. The event viewer is of more interest, since it shows events relating to the heartbeat network card, but I don't know how that would affect the availability of the server, since the standby node is offline. I'd appreciate any help you can provide, it's not very redundant if the setup depends on the standby server being up. :) Here are the event logs from the time of the problem, I include all of them since I can't seem to see what could possibly be the cause of the problem. So I did some googling on this error and saw the suggestion to try shrinking my other dbs to free up some space. So I did so on the 4.1gb db and now when I go to 'properties' for that db it says it is taking/using ~2.4gb. So I should have space now I figure, but whenever I try to restore the ~250mb database now I still get the error message above.. I tried restarting as well but that wasn't helpful. Any idea what the issue is?

  • Can't connect to MS SQL Server database using SSMS

    I have a database on line with Godaddy (who uses SQL Server 2005). They provide basic management tools, but tell you that for more advanced tools you can connect directly using SSMS. I followed their instructions to ensure my online database will accept remote connections, and can apparently log in using SSMS with success (after giving my hostname and access data). However: Now from in SSMS, when attempting to expand the "Databases" folder tree, I get the following error: Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Sdk.Sfc) An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) The server principal "cmitchell" is not able to access the database "3pointdb" under the current security context. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 916) The irony is that 3pointdb isn't my database. It is just another in a long list of databases that show up when I access my Godaddy backend. From SSMS, I selected the default database to be the name of my database, which it did locate on the list when I browsed. Still same error message. It is trying to connect to a database that isn't mine! :( Godaddy support, after a bit of testing, said the problem isn't on their end. it's on mine. – Charles

  • Unable To Install SQL Server 2008 On Windows 7 & Windows XP

    Hi Guys, you are my final hope of salvation! For the last five hours I've been trying to install SQL Server 2008, first on Windows 7 and then Windows XP. Both have had the same issue. Even before the installation starts, an error message appears saying: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installation has failed. SQL Server 2008 Setup requires .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to be installed. I have installed everything in the hope of getting past this. the service pack it refers to has even been installed and I can see them in the control panel! I have installed Framework 2.0, Framework 2.0 SP1, Framework 3.5, Framework 3.5 SP1, Windows Installer 3.5 and Windows Installer 4.0. Even installed the Service Pack for SQL Server 2008.... But, nothing, works! Does anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong or what could be wrong? I'm seriously close to the end of my tether, I've even sent Steve Ballmer an email with my frustration. I would seriously appreciate some help with this. Many thanks!
