  The title pretty much says it all. My experience w/ubuntu is VERY limited. I did find the system test feature and ran an audio test. It found my device as Intel 82801DB-ICH4. I wasn't getting anything. I tried a couple of things and don't really even remember what I tried, but I started getting audio (not just beeps) from the system's internal speaker. Any ideas? (I can't rule out a hardware problem. This box sat under my bed for a couple of years and it's first life was in an environment FULL of cement dust.)H

• SQL 2008 Mirroring, how to failover from the mirror database?

  I have configured a database mirroring setup in SQL 2008 using the High-safety, Synchronous mode, without automatic failover. I don't have a Witness instance. Regarding high availability, I understand Mirroring is a better strategy than Log Shipping (faster and smoother failover), and cheaper than Clustering (because of license and hardware costs). According to the MS docs, to do the failover you need to access to the Principal database and in the "Mirror" options click the "Failover" button. But I want to do this from the Mirror database, because what would be the benefit as all this setup is being done in case the Principal server knocks down? Evidently I am missing something. If Mirroring is not a solution for server downtime (as would be Clustering, if I understand correctly), then which practical (i.e. real world examples) cases would benefit from Mirroring for high-availability purposes?   I want to permanently disable a touchpad in Windows running on my laptop, since firstly, I use a mouse, and secondly, when I work, I often touch it accidentally what causes definite inconviniences. I tried the following approaches to disable it but with no result: Turned it off through BIOS — there's no such function there; Turned it off through the touchpad configuration utility — there's no such function there; Turned it off through the device manager — the disable button is inactive; Turned it off through a hotkey (Fn + F1 in my case) — the hotkey doesn't work; Uninstalled the proprietary driver — Windows automatically downloaded the standard driver; Uninstalled the standard driver and turned off the automatic driver download function (Win + R ? "systempropertiesadvanced" ? Hardware ? Device Installation Settings) — all the same, Windows downloaded and installed the driver. How can I disable a touchpad? Windows 7; the Alps touchpad.

• Fullscreen Video stutters on second monitor laptop

  Fullscreen video on my new 1080p monitor is choppy when it comes from my laptop. The same video plays when not full screen. This goes for all video(Flash/MKV, etc), regardless of video resolution. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series card in my Thinkpad Edge, Turion X2 2GHz. The computer plays 1080p fine. Things I've tried: Updating Drivers Switching cables Turning Hardware Acceleration Changing video players process priority Rebooting Turning of laptop screen Turning off unused processes Nothing Works. What is the likelyhood that my laptop cannot power a 1920x1280 display?

• Windows 8 will only recognize the Blu Ray ROM, if the install disk is present at boot time

  If I have the install disk in the blu ray ROM drive at boot time and subsequently remove the disk and replace it with blu ray media everything functions as I'd expect. However, if I have no media present, or another disk in the drive at boot time, then windows 8 does not seem to recognize that the blu ray player is even present in the computer. It is not present in the 'my computer' screen, device manager does not show the player, and scanning for new hardware yields nothing. It seems that the driver is installed and working as expect, what is it about having the windows 8 install disk in the drive or not that would cause this kind of behavior?

• GNU/Linux: SAS-disk detected as /dev/sg7 - not as /dev/sdb

  I have just installed a SAS disk into a Debian server. It was detected correctly and everything was fine. Then I moved the SAS disk to a different Debian server, the same hardware model and running same version of Debian, but here the SAS disk is detected as /dev/sg7 and not /dev/sdb. smartctl -a /dev/sg7 works fine, but fdisk and cat hang. I tried putting the SAS disk in another slot: Same problem. How can I force the SAS disk to be detected as /dev/sdb? # uname -a Linux maxwell 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.41-2+deb7u2 x86_64 GNU/Linux

• What are the "software" requirements for a 3D video?

  Today, looking for the technical explanations about MPEG4, I saw that it can implement the VRML rendering for a 3D video. This makes me wondering about the "software" requirements to make or to see a 3D video. I mean, assuming that I have all the "hardware" requirements(3D monitor, VGA, 3D-camera, etc), what should I need to make and see 3D videos looking over the "software" side? Must I need to make it on MPEG4 instead MPEG1 or MPEG2 because of the VRML support? May I need a specifc 3D codec to open and see 3D videos?? Until today, I believed that a 3D video was just a regular/ordinary video composed of 2 "overlapping layers". PS: This is the first time I'm researching about technical explanations/references about MPEG standards and 3D videos, any help or basic explanations will help.

• Intel Xeon vt-d query

  Does Xeon westmere ep (xeon 56xx series) have vt-d (=iommy / direct io) or does intel TXT (Intel® Trusted Execution Technology) include vt-d? I'm at a loss. I've been researching current processors for an important project for some time now. I need to know, if the xeon 5600s (Westmere EP) include vt-d (iommu/directed io/pci passing) because the system will run virtualized guests. This enables direct hardware access eg. pci passthrough, in xen for example. It seems that the 5600s TXT should incorporate vt-d and that xeon 5600s should include vt-d as they are ramped up 5500s, but there is no conclusive answer anywhere. Intel's processor comparison only states that 5500s have vt-d and no TXT and 5600s have no vt-d but TXT. I'd be really grateful if anybody could clear this up and possibly even provide a citation. • Rate limiting an internet connection per user

  I've got a friend who has a "rent-by-room" property and includes internet access as part of this. However some tenants are somewhat hogging the internet (i.e. constantly downloading). I was wondering if anyone knows of a fairly easy way of rate limiting each connection to make the system more equitable. A preferred solution would be a cheap piece of hardware or some sort of Linux "appliance". I would rather not have to get an iptables headache if this is avoidable.

He doesn't want to hear anything about VPS hosting and all the issues and expenses related to owning a server. • Is there any way to play Netflix (stream) in Windows Media Player 11?

  Googling for a solution yields a ridiculous page on eHow that instructs to insert a DVD from Netflix. But I am not interested in the DVD option. I am only interested in streaming and unfortunately none of my browsers (IE, FF, Chrome) uses the hardware acceleration built into my video card. The only way I can play non-choppy video on my PC is via Windows Media Player, but WMP doesn't list Netflix as one of the supported online stores for some reason. Any idea or trick how stream Netflix on WMP 11 instead of a browser?

• High CPU usage on Linux machine

  I have a piece of java code running on two different machines, but on one of the linux machines, the code uses alot of CPU (close to 100% cpu usage). On the other machine the same code uses less cpu (under 3 to 4%). The machine where cpu usage is high, is a more powerful machine, more CPU and and more memory. This has started happening recently and performance on the machine with high cpu usage has degraded significantly. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas why something like this could happen, possible causes behind this etc. any guesses? No recent changes in hardware were made, no recent code updates... Thank you.

• powertop keeps telling me to turn off the same thing, over and over

  I am running an ubuntu lucid laptop on battery. I want to make my power last as long as possible. Aswell as the normal things like turn down screen brightness, and turn off wifi, I'm using powertop. It will sometimes tell me things, e.g.: Suggestion: Enable USB autosuspend by pressing the U key OK, I press the U key to do that. However a few minutes later it will give me the same suggestion, it's as if it never enabled USB autosuspend the first time. It does this for other things aswell, not just USB autosuspend. e.g. it'll give me this message frequently: An audio device is active 100.0% of the time: hwC0D1 LSI ID 1040 Q - Quit R - Refresh A - Turn HD audio powersave on Is there anything I can do to make these choices 'stick'? Or do I have some unfortunatle hardware that won't obey linux? (If so, is there any way to confirm this?)

  I'm trying to use the RBC9 SpaceNavigator TEST x64 build drivers for my SpaceNavigator 3d joystick so that it can work as a normal joystick in games like Quake. Unfortunately, I get the error "This version of windows requires all drivers to have a valid digital signature" and in the "Device status" in device manager, I get "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)". Is there a way to work around this issue?

  I have windows 7(64) installation setup on a Boot Camp partition on my MacBook Pro 13". I also access this partition through VMware hosted by OS X (snow leopard). Every time I switch between VMware and Boot Camp windows says that it needs to be re-activated because of hardware or driver changes. I've tried wmware KB KB 1003426 to no avail.   I'm trying to configure port forwarding for Apache 2.2 installed on Windows XP SP3 with ZTE ZXV10 W300 router. The computer has a static IP 192.168.1.2. Port forwarding is configured as following: Enable true Name Apache Protocol TCP (also tried TCP and UPD) WAN Host Start IP Address empty WAN Host End IP Address empty WAN Connection stream WAN Start Port 8080 WAN End Port 8080 LAN Host IP Address 192.168.1.2 LAN Host Start Port 8080 LAN Host End Port 8080 Port 8080 is open for both TCP and UPD in Windows Brandmauer. Apache configuration: Listen 192.168.1.2:8080 Router Firmware: Hardware Version V1.0.01 Software Version V8.0.02T03_CFA Boot Loader Version V1.1.2 The provider is COMSTAR. I'm not sure but it's said they flash routers with modified firmware. I have also tried to set up Bitcomet port forwarding on port 13514 and failed.

• Windows SBS 2011 DNS Role (service) failing & needing restarting

  Have a Windows SBS 2011 with Exchange that is handling all DNS for the network. Since getting a 3rd party (Hardware & Support) to setup a recieving FTP service and restricting Exchanges memory useage for another 3rd party product (Stock software) the local network seems to periodically 'lose the internet connection'. Delving deeper I found that the DNS service is somehow failing/stopping without the actual service on the server reporting such (nothing in event logs). A simple restart of the 'DNS Role' on the server solves the problem. The manager onsite reports that he has to do this most days in the afternoon - yet not at the same time and other days it works fine without a restart being required. I'm unable (lacking sufficient SBS2011 knowledge) to diagnose this further, ideally I would like the DNS Role to report (and log) the failure, then automatically restart itself.

• Windows XP loses drive letter for existing partition on disk

  Hi, apologies if this has already been asked - I couldn't spot anything exactly the same. I'm looking for help on the fact that Windows XP has suddenly decided to stop assigning a drive letter to the second partition on my laptop's disk. I haven't added or changed hardware and I keep everything pretty clean in terms of software installed. I've partitioned the disk into a system partition on C: and a user partition on d: but lately, when booting or coming out of hibernation or sometime from stand-by, Windows will lose it's d: mapping. If I notice and remap it from MMC, everything will be perfectly happy and will keep going. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Kev

• Classic ASP on large memory server

  I have a client with a large ASP app that apparently is fairly memory intensive. I’m helping them migrate to new hardware they have running Win2k8 R2. They have 4 physical servers with 32gb of RAM each. I’m making the assumption that ASP apps run as a x32 process. So I see that we have two options: On the application pool enable web gardens. Use the physical servers as VM hosts and split the box into say 4 web servers each. Any thoughts on which path will provide us better performance? I’m just not really sure how ASP will handle a machine with lots of memory, and I’m worried it won’t really be able to address the memory well. (you can ignore all the obvious stuff like increased maintenance of 16 web servers vs 4, or the flexibility virtualization gets us over physical servers, etc)

• Keep-Alive header not sent from Tomcat 5.5 http connector?

  Hi, We're currently using a hardware load balancer, which then goes to Apache and that then goes to Tomcat 5.5 via the AJP connector. We've decided to dump apache for various reasons - In our current system it doesnt provide any advantage. However when I look at the headers sent when we do this, the "Keep-Alive: timeout=15 max=96" header doesnt get sent when you use the tomcat http connector Interestingly, i can find no documentiation on "keepalivetimeout" for tomcat5.5, but i can for tomcat6. But neither can i find evidence that tomcat5.5 doesnt support this setting. here's my connector: <Connector port="8090" maxHttpHeaderSize="8192" maxThreads="400" minSpareThreads="150" maxSpareThreads="300" enableLookups="false" connectionTimeout="2" maxKeepAliveRequests="400" disableUploadTimeout="true" /> So; Is there any way I can specify the keepalive timeout if we use the http connector with tomcat 5.5, and force this header entry to be sent? • Duplicate incoming TCP traffic on Debian Squeeze

  I have to test a homebrew server that accepts a lot of incoming TCP traffic on a single port. The protocol is homebrew as well. For testing purposes, I'd like to send this traffic both : - to the production server (say, listening on port 12345) - to the test server (say, listening on port 23456) My clients apps are "dumb" : they never read data back, and the server never replies anyway, my server only accepts connections, and do statistical computations and store/forward/service both raw and computed data. Actually, client apps and hardware are so simple there is no way I can tell clients to send their stream on both servers... And using "fake" clients is not good enough. What could be the simplest solution ? I can of course write an intermediary app that just copy incoming data and send it back to the testing server, pretending to be the client. I have a single server running Squeeze and have total control over it. Thanks in advance for your replies.

• How to fully use the 4G in my Laptop under Ubuntu 9.10 - 32-bit

  I have a Toshiba A100, which I upgraded to 4G of RAM. The hardware startup indeed shows 4G of RAM, and I recently installed Windows 7, just to see how it behaves on it. So far so good, it displays 4G of RAM. Not that I tried to use it all, but it displays it. Previously under XP, I also would see 4G of RAM. But under Ubuntu 9.10 (32 or 64 bits), it only displays 2.9 G of RAM. And my kernel is the "pae" compiled one, which is supposed to do the trick to work around the 32-bit CPU limitation. How can I get Ubuntu to fully use my 4G of RAM ?

• Windows 2008R2 two node failover cluster creation fails

  We have just installed two Windows 2008R2 Enterprise machines with identical hardware. When running the cluster validation everything is ok. When creating the cluster it fails with the following error: An error occurred while creating the cluster. An error occurred creating cluster 'CLUSTER04'. The parameter is incorrect The logfile on the first node where we are running our config from, does not show any errors. On the second node we get: The Cluster service is shutting down because quorum was lost. This could be due to the loss of network connectivity between some or all nodes in the cluster, or a failover of the witness disk. I've double checked and all communication between the servers are fine. Even when creating a one node cluster it gives the error. There are other failover clusters we have setup without any issues.

• Format an external hard disk

  I am trying to format an external hard disk to FAT32 (I need it to work with some hardware that expects it to be in FAT32). When I am trying to format it via windows the only option I'm getting is to format it to NTFS. Another strange thing is that when I am trying to format one of my own partitions (on the hard disk that is running the OS) I can do it only in NTFS while another partition my OS can format in both NTFS and FAT32. What can cause such a behavior and how can I format the external hard disk to FAT32?

• "broken" windows xp after disc replacement

  Windows xp pro OEM was installed on my machine, Disk was failing so I cloned it to a new disk (larger one). Now windows said that the hardware has changed significantly and I need to re-activate, and I would gladly do (got the product number on a sticker on the machine) - only that for running the activation process I need to be logged-in, but when I try to login it just automatically logs me out again :( I know my credentials are O.K. because I can connect to the machine remotely and also use sysinternals tools such as PsExec or PSList etc. on it from a remote machine by specifying user and pasword. Login via safemode does not work any differently then in normal mode... I tried to run rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk (as suggested in several places on the net) using PsExec but it did not seem to help... Is there any way out of this evil circle? [ can't log in because not activated - cant activate because not logged in ]
