• Apache port forwarding with ZTE ZXV10 W300 router (provider specific firmware)

  I'm trying to configure port forwarding for Apache 2.2 installed on Windows XP SP3 with ZTE ZXV10 W300 router. The computer has a static IP 192.168.1.2. Port forwarding is configured as following: Enable true Name Apache Protocol TCP (also tried TCP and UPD) WAN Host Start IP Address empty WAN Host End IP Address empty WAN Connection stream WAN Start Port 8080 WAN End Port 8080 LAN Host IP Address 192.168.1.2 LAN Host Start Port 8080 LAN Host End Port 8080 Port 8080 is open for both TCP and UPD in Windows Brandmauer. Apache configuration: Listen 192.168.1.2:8080 Router Firmware: Hardware Version V1.0.01 Software Version V8.0.02T03_CFA Boot Loader Version V1.1.2 The provider is COMSTAR. I'm not sure but it's said they flash routers with modified firmware. I have also tried to set up Bitcomet port forwarding on port 13514 and failed.

• Backup strategy for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V

  I am in the process of planning a Hyper-V deployment with SCVMM 2008 R2. I have several VMs on VMWare Player (temporary solution) for stuff like Sharepoint 2007, 2010, and a couple of other server apps. I want to develop a resilient backup plan for this. On the software side, Data Protection Manager 2010 will support all of the server apps I run (sQL Server 2008 R2, Sharepoint, Exchange, etc). But on the hardware side (storage), what is the best way to go? Drobo seems to have issues with Hyper-V juding by a few threads on here and doesn't support DPM 2010 (which is in beta anyway) but not even the 2007 version (see http://www.drobo.com/support/best_practices.php). What storage device would work well? Do I need a home server or just an external usb drive? Capacity wise, 2tb will probably be best so I can have a small archive and implement a round-robin system. What measures/software would you recomend, and why, to secure this server down and minimalize the attack vector? Webapplications aside ... This is what I have so far: iptables (for gen. packet filtering) fail2ban (brute force attack defense) ssh (chang default, port disable root access) modsecurity - is really clumsy and a pain (any alternative here?) ?Sudo why should I use it? what is the advantage to normal user handling thinking about greensql for mysql www.greensql.net is tripwire worth looking at? snort? • QoS / PBR Routing Questions

  I have a 50Mbs Satellite link and a 10Mbs Microwave link supplying a very remote location. Behind these links, I have a 6,400 seat network - with about 3,000 signed in at any one time. My goal is to send all of the Voip traffic (Google Chat, Magic Jack, Skype, Speakeasy, Vonage, Vonage PC, Yahoo) through the microwave link which has 100ms latency. The rest of the traffic can utilize any remaining bandwidth of the microwave link with excess being diverted to the higher latency (600ms) satellite connection. The problem I've had so far is that most automatic routing configurations weigh the bandwidth heavily for preference - and I'm only wanting latency considered. Additionally, I don't know if this can even be handled with the routing hardware I have at my disposal (Cisco 3640, 3745, & 3845). Any recommendations (or really good starting points) would be greatly appreciated.

• Ubuntu 10.04 with HD flash

  Just noticed that 10.04 is out. My media server has been packed away for a few months but I might dust if off and give 10.04 a shot but I thought I'd see if anyone has any success stories with HD flash in either Chrome or Firefox. I'm currently running Ubuntu 9.10 and it was a large enough pain to get VDPAU working with my Zotac Ion-ITX-C board (eventually found an mplayer PPA that had it compiled in) From reading the 10.04 docs it looks like this is standard now, but I'm wondering about streaming HD, from, say flash or Divx. I've never been able to get HD flash to play without it being extremely choppy, and I chalk this up to the lack of hardware assisted decoding like VDPAU (a guess). My board certainly isn't a competitor in CPU power or memory, which is why i've needed the HW accelerated decoding for HD vids in the past. Just wondering if anyone has had any success stories playing HD vid online (flash, divx or what have you)

• FTPS SSH Host Key after IP Address Change

  I have a Secure FTP (FTPS) server that my remote sites to upload files to daily via scripted routines that run. I have had issues in the past when upgrading hardware and deploying new servers causing the RSA Fingerprint to change for that server. Then all my remote sites can't connect until I have the old key removed (usually via ssh_keygen -r myserver.com). I now have to change the IP address for myserver.com and I wondered if there is anyway to proactively generate new host keys so that when the server address changes all my FTPS client remote sites don't break?

• Home network with Windows 7 as router

  Background: I have tried to use routers, but so far all of them can't handle the bandwidth, number of connections eventually limited by the hardware resources, so overall the home routers are decreasing the internet speed. I went through DD-WRT and stuff like that. Question: What I want is to use my Windows7 PC as router. It has 2 LAN cards. I'm going to connect to this router another desktop 2 pcs and notebook through wireless router. The main question is what is the most efficient way to turn this Windows7 box(and I need Windows for native NTFS support) into router with NAT/Routing/Firewall functionality? Is there any routing software recommended for this purpose or I should just use windows native "Internet Sharing"? I'm going to run SIP phones in the LAN, so I need friendly NAT(Full cone perhaps). Also I'm going to have FTP server on that Windows7 "server" PC. As firewall I'm thinking about Comodo. Need to drop all incoming, unless explicitly allowed.

  I have a Lenovo v570 with a Nvidia GeForce 410m with cuda. It came with windows 7 and everything works well. However I just got bored of windows 7 and I'm yearning for xp. I installed xp and got everything to work except the Nvidia driver. In their website there is only the windows 7 nvidia driver available. I searched http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/26388 and got a driver for the 400m series. I tried the software and it didn't work, message << THIS GRAPHICS DRIVER COULD NOT FIND COMPATIBLE GRAPHICS HARDWARE . • Wacom Bamboo tablet for Doctors

  My friend is a Skin specialist (Tricologist) and she has a computer with WinXP in her office. She asked me if I can recommend a hardware which would enable her to write on a graphics tablet that would appear on the screen. Her requirement is thus: There is a prescription paper, a sheet of paper (A4 size) which has a letter head (With the title of the Clinic, Doctor's name etc). The exact image of the paper is available on the Computer. She takes the pictures of the patient's head with a camera and pastes the photo over the sheet of paper. So the top half of the prescription paper will have the photo of the patient's head. In the second half, she wants to write the medication required. I have heard of Bamboo graphics tablet and I saw video in Youtube. But I am not sure if it would be the right solution for her. Can anyone please advise me on this?

  I am looking at a number of possible options for load-balancing. So far, I am constrained to the following options: DNS server load-balancer, balancing to a cluster of tomcat servers, with terracotta for session replication. Pros - don't have to buy new kit. Cons - DNS lb can keep directing to a broken server. Hardware load-balancer, direct to cluster of tomcat servers. Pros - could have second box for failover lb. Cons - expense. Apache server load-balancer. Pros - apache's lb polls for broken servers. Cons - apache server is single point of failure, plus need to buy another server. Are there any other options I should consider? Thanks. Update: Thanks for all the answers so far +1's all round. Not accepting an answer yet, to keep more ideas coming.

• Macbook Pro suddenly lagging video playback + Flash sites

  I have a Macbook Pro, OSx Lion, Intel Core2 Duo, 4GB Ram, NVidia Geforce 8600M GT 128 MB Ram, Intel x25m SSD. Approximately 4 years old. I've been running Flash sites and playing videos without any problems for years. Then suddenly 3 months ago, a flash site like http://thefwa.com is lagging in all browsers. Even mouseover animations - anything. Also video playback in e.g VLC and Quicktime is now lagging. Same videos I used before, I tried installing an older version of VLC without any luck. Playing back video in VLC utilizes the CPU almost 100%, and Flash sites like thefwa.com easily takes up 50-60%. It's as if the hardware acceleration stopped working, or the GPU lost its magic. UPDATE: Same issues also occurred on Snow Leopard Has anyone experienced something similar, or do you know what might be wrong?

• Device cannot be added on software-raid-1 array on Ubuntu 12.04

  Unfortunately all tutorials I have found online until now on how to setup software-raid-1 are outdated on ubuntu 12.40 My target is to setup it on a system with a secondary disk drive that is already running. Format is not an option! I am trying to follow and adapt from 11.10 to 12.04 the following tutorial: http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-set-up-software-raid1-on-a-running-lvm-system-incl-grub2-configuration-ubuntu-11.10-p2 On the above tutorial there is a successful command which creates a raid-1 array by setting the first disk drive with the installed system as missing: mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-disks=2 missing /dev/sdb1 But when the time comes to add the first main drive with the installed system on the raid-array with this command: mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/sda1 I receive an error message. The error message says that the device /dev/sda is (which makes sense) busy! Note: hardware raid solution is not available since the system is a laptop with two disk drives! Thank you

• Xenserver boot error

  I'm trying to get Xenserver 5.5 running on a spare computer here, hardware specs: Intel Q6600, 4GB Ram, and Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R motherboard Xenserver itself installs fine onto a 150GB sata hdd, however it fails to boot whatsoever, giving this garbled mess: http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/9918/biosi.jpg it's not frozen because if I press enter it just prints a different garble and it also says "could not find kernel image". The strangest thing is if I put that hdd in my desktop and assign it to a VMWare desktop vm (under the ESX profile no less) it boots perfectly... leading me to believe there are no problems with the install or the hdd itself. From what I can tell the error seems to be occuring completely seperately to Xenserver, in the bootloader extlinux?. If there was a motherboard compatibility issue I would think it would also have manifested during installation, and the fact the problem seems to be with the booting into Xen makes me doubt this. Any ideas guys? (I'm using Xen because it can do PCI passthrough without VT-d.)

• Load balancing and HTTPS strategies

  I am faced with the following problem: Servers get saturated since current load balancing strategy is based on client IP. Some corporate clients access our servers from behind large proxies so all clients appear with same IP to our load balancer. I think we are using some hardware load balancing device (can investigate further if necessary). We need to maintain session affinity (site is constructed in ASP), so all requests with same IP get routed to the same node. Since all the communication goes over the HTTPS, no request data (like session Id) is available to balancer as a client discriminator. Is there a way to use some other data besides the IP to distinguish between clients and route the clients even when coming from same IP to different nodes? Note: I need to maintain the traffic between the balancer and nodes safe (encrypted).

  I have a machine with Ubuntu 9.04 and a Broadcom BCM4306 wireless card which has been running quite happily for many months with the b43legacy driver that's suggested by Hardware Drivers. Suddenly, I'm now seeing crippling packet loss, varying between 30% and 90% when pinging the router. My WinXP machine is still quite happy even when sat next to the Ubuntu box, so I assume that it's not some new source of interference. What else is likely to have changed? How should I go about diagnosing and fixing this?

At a glance, this looks exactly like what Windows ReadyBoost attempts to do with software at the OS level: Pairing the benefits of a large hard drive together with the performance of solid-state flash memory. Does the Momentus XT out-perform a similar ad-hoc pairing of a decent hard drive with similar flash memory storage under Windows ReadyBoost? Other than the obvious "a hardware implementation ought to be faster than a software implementation", why would ReadyBoost not be able to perform as well as such a hybrid device?

  I have a scenario when i have to establish peer-to-peer preshared key based VPN to a vendor. This vendor uses Cisco EasyVPN with Cisco VPN 3000 as access concentrator. I am looking for a less inexpensive and possibly and open replacement to this to save my cost and also recommend to them. I have tried OpenVPN and thinking about vyatta.

  I've an x4540 Sun storage server running NexentaStor Enterprise. It's serving NFS over 10GbE CX4 for several VMWare vSphere hosts. There are 30 virtual machines running. For the past few weeks, I've had random crashes spaced 10-14 days apart. This system used to open OpenSolaris and was stable in that arrangement. The crashes trigger the automated system recovery feature on the hardware, forcing a hard system reset. • Cross platform support for network attached USB hubs?

  I am looking at network-attached USB hubs in order to run licensed software in a virtualized environment when hardware dongles are required. Are there any solutions that will work with both Linux and Windows? Most of the dedicated devices -- such as the Zonet ZUH2214 or the (oddly expensive) Digi AnywherUSB/2 -- appear to be Windows-only. Linux has the the USB/IP project, for which there appear to be Windows drivers, but the last "News" post on the site was in 2007, so I'm not entirely confident about the viability of the project. Has anyone out there found a solution that will work well in both environments?

• vmware server end of life, where to go now?

  We have some virtual machines on vmware server 2.x running on 64 bit hardware and quite happy with it. As vmware server will no longer be offered we are thinking to migrate to ESXi, which seems is free. We will have to install the specialized network cards but that's a minor problem. But once left alone with a quite silently discontinued product there is some resistance to vmware. VirtualBox seems to work: http://blogs.oracle.com/virtualization/2010/06/migrating_from_vmware_to_virtu.html What other free (of licencing cost) options are there? We have windows server 2003 32 bit VMs and also linux 32 and 64 bit VMs to migrate. So xen does not seem an option, which does not run microsoft OSes.

• No "Terminal Services" branch in "Group Policy Object Editor"

  Hi, We have several identical several servers in a hosting company. They run Windows 2003 R2 Std SP2 64bit. The servers are not in a domain. We have recently received a new server with the same configuration and hardware. However, the new server is different in some way. When we run "gpedit.msc /s" there are much less options in the tree than the other servers. Specifically we are missing the configuration of "Terminal Services". Many other items are missing under "Administrative templates" and "Windows components". • Apache hanging with MaxClients is reached

  My Apache 2.2 (preform MPM) is hanging when MaxClients is reached, rather than queueing up requests and serving them when child processes become free. When this happens, the web server is totally unresponsive until it is manually restarted. The server stack is Ubuntu 8, MySQL 5, PHP 5. Hardware is Dual Xeons (2.8) with 2GB of RAM. It serves 30,000 - 50,000 pageviews per day. Static images, CSS, and JS are offloaded to a separate server and PHP is cached using eAccelerator. The HTML output of many pages is cached to the filesystem. We've got the model 3 ones, but can't find the driver disc and using the Windows Hardware Installation Wizard gets me no where! Can you help me to find the driver? When I've used it at my old school it had a piece of software called the Digital Movie Creator, which I've heard you can use to make stop-motion films, which is what I want to do!
