  First I am a complete novice and need answers in plain and simple terms. I am trying to get the users manual for my Samsung galaxy s4 phone. Samsung "help" sent me a link to click but when I received it it was in Spanish tho the doc I'd said "english". The Samsung support line timed me out because I couldn't type fast enough when I told them I received it in Spanish. I explored the translator and didn't see how to translate a doc. Asked Google how to get the manual they gave a different doc I'd and sent it to clipboards. How can I read it? Now what? Tried to send this message and asking me for a tag and I have no idea what that means so I just clicked one. That's why I need the manual so desperately. • Fastest Way to generate 1,000,000+ random numbers in python

  I am currently writing an app in python that needs to generate large amount of random numbers, FAST. Currently I have a scheme going that uses numpy to generate all of the numbers in a giant batch (about ~500,000 at a time). While this seems to be faster than python's implementation. I still need it to go faster. Any ideas? I'm open to writing it in C and embedding it in the program or doing w/e it takes. Constraints on the random numbers: A Set of numbers 7 numbers that can all have different bounds: eg: [0-X1, 0-X2, 0-X3, 0-X4, 0-X5, 0-X6, 0-X7] Currently I am generating a list of 7 numbers with random values from [0-1) then multiplying by [X1..X7] A Set of 13 numbers that all add up to 1 Currently just generating 13 numbers then dividing by their sum Any ideas? Would pre calculating these numbers and storing them in a file make this faster? Thanks!

  How do YOU debug a Scala program? I mean YOU as in the person posting the Answer :) Please answer only from personal experience, not from stuff you've heard or read on the Internet. You should not believe everything you read on the Internet, especially tales of complex open-source software configurations that actually work :-) The are many Java tools which claim to support Scala in some way or another, but I have so far struck out in trying to get any one of them to actually let me set a breakpoint in Scala code and step through it. These are big, major open-source IDEs I'm talking about here. The main problem in getting a debugger to work seems to be the "version hell" with fast-changing IDEs, Plug-Ins, JDKs, and the Scala language itself. Hence, the more detailed re-statement of the question is appropriate: What is the exact version number of the IDE, Plug-In, JDK, Scala, and even Operating System, that you are successfully using?   Hi, Trying to implement some nested loops that are spitting out good old nested html table data. So the question is; What is the best way to loop through lists and nested lists in order to produce easily maintainable code. It can get quite narly quite fast when working with multiple nested tables or lists. Should I make use of a HTML helper, or make something with the ViewModel to simplify this? A requirement is if there are no children at a node there should be an empty row on that spot with some links for creation and into other parts of the system.

• Replacing keywords in text with php & mysql

  Hello, I have a news site containing an archive with more than 1 million news. I created a word definitions database with about 3000 entries, consisting of word-definition pairs. What I want to do is adding a definition next to every occurence of these words in the news. I cant make a static change as I can add a new keyword everyday, so i can make it realtime or cached. The question is, a str_replace or a preg_replace would be very slow for searching 3 thousand keywords in a text and replacing them. Are there any fast alternatives?

  Using the following to load images base on two ids one is the and bookid and the out is the client. My folder structures is this. root path = flipbooks subfolders under flipbooks are books and clients in subfolder books I have and .net page title tablet. the tablet code behind checks the bookid of client and render a the tablet page with images in a flipbook fashion. because we have over 15000 records and flipbooks already created and stored in the database. I don't move the client folder under the books subfolders. I need the code below to get to the client subfolder in the query string and help to change this would be helpful. The result now is http://www.somewebsite.com/books/client/images/someimage1.jpg[^] I need the results to be http://www.somewebsite.com/client/images/someimage1.jpg[^]. I tried moving the tablet.aspx file to the root flipbooks and it works but i have provide a user name and password each time. This need to be access by the public and my root is protected. Don't want to have to change permission. • How to disable Eclipse's behavior of maximizing editor when double clicking a tab?

  I recently updated my Eclipse (now running 20100218-1602), and I've found whenever I click around quickly between tabs on the tab bar, it will sometimes maximize the editor and hide the PHP Explorer to the left. After researching a little, this appears to be a feature of double clicking a tab. So I guess it's my fault, I'm sure I'm clicking around too fast and mistakenly double clicking a tab, but it happens often enough on what I'd consider a normal editing session that I've come to absolutely loathe it, and even after the usual googling due diligence cannot figure out how to turn it off. From this post (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/594659/eclipses-tab-double-click-on-visual-studio) someone mentions the Window.AutoHideAll shortcut, however that seems to only be for assigning keyboard shortcuts--this is a mouse click thing. But maybe it's a clue. I can't find anything relevant under Eclipse - Preferences - PHP. I don't think it's specific to PHP because if I switch to the Java perspective, double clicking a tab hides the Package Explorer. Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks!

• Advice about testing an application before release?

  I would like to get some tips from peer developers about how you go about testing an application you developed, prior to release to QA. Keep in mind, this is a small scale application (requirements are verbal), and so doing formal testing processes wont work, especially, since your boss told you to develop this app quick, push it out the door. Despite the time restraints, I would like to make sure it is bug free, however, numerous times in the past, I have had the app sent back to me because clicking the "Reset" button, messes up the other controls alignment etc. I know there are people out there that develop small scale apps fast, and send them out with minimal bugs. • Jquery toggle with two elements

  I am using a toggle on a graphic to slide out a contact form. The problem is, the contact form can cover up the graphic element on low resolutions. I thought a solution would be to include a "close this" inside the form, that would use the same toggle effect. When I add the close this element to the code, instead of working in tandem with the original graphic element, it starts the chain back over, and slides the contact form even further out. • Can NTFS-Search(An OSS project) scan any file on NTFS volume?

  I want to apply NTFS-Search to our project. Our project have to find the files which we specified.(fast and exactly!) But I'm not sure the program(NTFS-Search) works well. What if the file specified is system file? What if the file is being opened by a process with NO_READ_SHARE_MODE? Do you think NTFS-Search can find any files? I don't know about NTFS filesystem well. • Whats the best way to deal with backups for my php/mysql application

  I'm creating php application for my client and now thinking what would be the best way to do backups, automatically if possible? I don't have much experience in this area and in case something goes wrong, or if I need to migrate, I would like to have fast way of getting it all back online. I understand "something goes wrong" is a very wide term, but lets say that someone hacks my site and wipes out database and all the files. My app. is written in php/mysql and I got access to cpanel (hosted with justhost.com if that makes any difference :). I used Joomla and it has JoomlaPack that does complete backup almost automatically and in case site fails, its easy to revert, or migrate if necessary. Is there anything like that for my configuration that would make reverting/migration, easy?

  I am retriving this content from ajax <div id="content"> click on image to close<img id="img_id"> </div> jQuery code to close div: $("#img_id").live('click',function(){ $("#content").slideUp('fast'); }); Once I click on image div closes. But in IE6 nothing happens. I don't know why IE6 doesn't take live click event, or if the problem is with image id. Once image clicked (live click event not triggered in IE6) What would be the reason?

• How can i test my DB speed? (Learning)

  I have design a database. Theres no columns with indexing, nor any code for optimizing. I am positive i should index certain columns since i search them a lot. My question is HOW do i test if any part of my database will be slow? ATM I am using sqlite and i will be switching to either MS Sql or MySql based on my host provider. Will creating 100,000 records in each table be enough? Or will that always be fast in sqlite and i need to do 1mil? Do i need 10mil before a database will become slow? Also how do i time it? I am using C# so should i use StopWatch or is there a ADO.NET/Sqlite function i should use?

I need a database solution that is: Fast for sorting Simplistic (no users, preferably no additional structures like multiple tables etc.) Concurrent (if possible) Multi-platform File based (not stored in memory primarily) Centralized I will be programming in Go. As I understand, I believe I need what is called a Document Orientated Database, because I am storing objects, identified by keys.   I'm in this project: A web page that's gonna be used by the front-end company people to query and update data from a SQL DB. I'm working with visual studio and the code behind (C#) is almost done, so the interactions between SQL and C# and ok. My original idea was to work with ASP.NET which is familiar to me, but that's not gonna be possible. I have to switch to PHP. So, today is my first day learning PHP, checking http://php.net/manual/en/index.php and a lot of things seem quite similar to ASP.NET so I guess it won't be that hard. Anyways, some questions popped up quite fast as I wanted to script something else than a "hello world" . Is there an easy way to get/send C# variables from my class using a php page? I've read soemthing about using XML in order to do so, but still I'm scratching my head, is there another, easier, way to do this?

• Loading more than 10 images on iPhone??

  I'm trying to add more than 10 pictures on ScrollView. But if the variable 'i' is bigger than 10, 'UIImage *image' is empty. The imageName seems to correct. But I don't know why it does not load image. Does anybody sees the problem?? And one more thing. If I do like that, does iOS controls memory automatically? I mean it's kind of wasting memory if all (more than 10) images are loaded on memory even they are not displayed. I've heard that iOS loads images only displayed on screen and free images those are not displayed. Is that right? Thanks for reading.

• NoSQL for concurrent reads/writes

  After getting some performance issues for an application using a MySQL database, I'm thinking of using NoSQL solutions. My architecture is as follows: One application receives messages from the network at a high throughput (i.e. 50000 messages/sec). Each message is stored in the DB, so it's important for the write rate to be as fast as the arrival rate. Then, I also have some PHP pages that accesses the DB to get the data stored by the other application. It's important for me that the retrieved data is as relevant as possible (i.e. not old data, let's say not more than 5 seconds old). Also, the data is not critical, so I don't need any security mechanism to avoid losing the data. I see there are a lot of NoSQL solutions, but I don't know if they are all relevant. Could you please provide me some directions. Thanks

• Should I learn Haskell or F# if I already know OCaml?

  I am wondering if I should continue to learn OCaml or switch to F# or Haskell. Here are the criteria I am most interested in: Longevity Which language will last longer? I don't want to learn something that might be abandoned in a couple years by users and developers. Will Inria, Microsoft, University of Glasgow continue to support their respective compilers for the long run? Practicality Articles like this make me afraid to use Haskell. A hash table is the best structure for fast retrieval. Haskell proponents in there suggest using Data.Map which is a binary tree. I don't like being tied to a bulky .NET framework unless the benefits are large. I want to be able to develop more than just parsers and math programs. Well Designed I like my languages to be consistent. Please support your opinion with logical arguments and citations from articles. Thank you.

If I select another one the selection is resetted and the new one changes its background. • Recommend a local LDAP store for development

  Our project uses an LDAP repository for storing users. In production this will be Active Directory. For development, we seem to have a couple of options: Install an AD LDS instance that everyone uses Install an AD LDS instance on every developer machine We're trying to keep the 'F5' experience as lightweight as possible, so installing things or relying on a central AD store aren't my favorite ideas. There are other LDAP servers, like Open LDAP. I was hoping there might be an LDAP server that simply talks to an XML file. This would allow us to store the XML file in source control and have something that is fast and works. Our nightly builds would still use AD to pick up any differences, but the hope is since we're using LDAP it should Just Work. Can you recommend an LDAP implementation that works well for zero-config shared-nothing development?

• After C++ - Python or Java?

  I'm fast approaching the point in my coding where I would like to quickly write object oriented code in languages other than C++ for a variety of reasons. After a lot of research, my choices have pretty much narrowed down to Python and Java. I'm leaning towards Python because of its relationship to C, but with Java, from what I can see, I get a good introduction to using and creating test suites with Eclipse - there is also Processing which is pulling me towards Java. I'm not the kind of guy to tackle two languages at once, so which one would you recommend and why? What I want at the end is to have an additional language I can use for rapid development. Ease of learning isn't important to me as I'm willing to put in the time regardless. Ability to use the new language widely is.
