  • How to grow from single server setup

    I'm looking for resources on how to grow our server setup. We currently have one dedicated server with Rackspace in the UK of the following spec: HPDL385_G2_PrevGen HP Single Dual Core Opteron 2214 (2.2Ghz) 4GB RAM 2x 10,000 SCSI Drives in RAID 1 Our traffic is up to 550,000 UVs per month. The site runs off a PHP and MySQL setup. The database gets an absolute hammering, we have many complex queries joining multilpe tables. We are using APC for PHP caching. I'm getting to the stage where I've done as much DB and query optimisation as I can and wonder what the next step should be...... I've looked at memcache, but I've got the impression that his requires a large amount of RAM and ideally a dedicated box.... So is the next step to have two boxes; one for database, one for Apache? Or is there a step I've overlooked. Our load is usually around the 2 mark, but right now it's up at 20!

    Not sure if this belongs here or on SuperUser, feel free to move as appropriate. I've noticed the performance on my RAID0 setup seems to have degraded over the past months. The throughput is fine, but I think the random access time has increased or something. In use I generally see about 1-5mb/sec when loading stuff in Visual Studio and other apps and it doesn't seem like the CPU is bottlenecking as the CPU utilization is pretty low. I don't recall what Access Time used to be, but HD Tune is reporting 12.6ms Read throughput is showing as averaging about 125MB/sec so it should be great for sequential reads. Defrag daily and it shows fragmentation levels low, so that shouldn't be an issue. Additional info, Windows 7 x64, Intel raid controller on mobo, WD Black 500GB (I think 32mb cache) x2.

  • Machine check events logged

    In /var/log/messages, this error occurred: Sep 19 13:18:15 wdc kernel: [2772302.630416] Machine check events logged Shortly there after, the entire server became unresponsive. This is in the log of the Dom0 for a Xen Server (running the latest version on Debian Squeeze). Can anyone shed some light on what this error means? Should I be ordering new hardware? Edit: Also, it seems to imply it logged something, where can I find that?

  • Stack-based keyboard delay using Logitech MX3100 keyboard

    I've been using a Logitech Cordless Desktop MX3100 keyboard for quite a while. I've never really had any problems, except for the occasional typo. I noticed however that I tended make the typo "Laod" instead of "Load", quite a bit more often than any other typos. As it started to get on my nerves, I decided to do some testing. What I found out was than when I write lowercase "load", I'd never make the typo. All uppercase, or just uppercase L, I'd make the typo quite often. My actual (very scientific) testing is probably best described by showing the output: moatmoatmoat MoatMoatMoat loatloatloat LaotLaotLaot loafloafloaf LaofLaofLaof hoathoathoat HoatHoatHoat hoadhoadhoad HoadHoadHoad lortlortlort LrotLrotLrot What i found out was that whenever shift was depressed, typing an uppercase "L" would induce a significant lag if the next character was an "o", compared to the lag of the any other key: High "o" lag: LoLoLoLoLoLo No "a" lag: LaLaLaLaLaLa No lag for neither "o" nor "a": lolololololo lalalalalala By realizing this I regained a slight bit of sanity as I knew I wasn't coming down with a case of Parkinsons. I was actually typing correctly, the lag just interpreted it wrongly. Now, what really bugs me is that I can't fathom how this is occurring. What I'm actually typing, in physical order, is this: L - o - a - d, and yet, the "a" is output before the "o", even though "o" was pressed before "a". So while the keyboard is processing the "Lo" combo, the "a" gets prioritized and is inserted before the "o" is done processing, resulting in Laod instead of Load. And this only happens when typing "Lo", not when typing lowercase "lo". This problem could stem from the keyboard hardware, the receiver hardware or the keyboard software driver. No matter the fault location however, I can't imagine how this could be implemented as anything but a FIFO queue. A general delay, sure, I could live with that, albeit I'd be irritated. But a lag affecting different keys differently, and even resulting in unpredictable outcome - that just doesn't make any sense. I've solved the problem by just switching to a wired keyboard. I just can't shake it off me though; what kind of bug/error/scenario would result in a case like this? Edit: It's been suggested that I stop drinking Red Bull and stick to water instead. While that may actually help solve the issue, I'm really not looking for a solution as such. I'm more interested in an explanation of how this could happen, as I can't imagine any viable technical solution that could result in this behavior.

    Does anyone know of a program that would allow you to control multiple IR cameras via usb (computer jack) to rs232 (camera hardware)? We have a cameraswitcher, very low key, that I can press buttons and it willswitch the view of the camera from one to the next. currently I control the cameras by sellecting the cameras via a remote control for change of angles. Does anyone know anything that could give me some ability to do manual controls via my computer?. Please Advise, thanks!

  • SQL Server 2000 msdb database loading/suspect

    My SQL Server recently suffered a raid controller/hard drive crash. After getting my hard drive problem corrected I soon found that some of my databases were (suspect) namely msdb. I am not a DBA by any means however am somewhat familiar with the daily SQL activities that happen on my server. So I restored from backup, and tried to bring my msdb database online. It is now forever stuck in (Loading\Suspect) and I am unable to script backups for my important databases. I can recreate all of the backup plans etc if i can somehow get a working msdb. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am currently using: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Version: 8.00.194

  • How to remove iso 9660 from USB?

    I have somehow managed to write an iso 9660 image onto my USB drive, which makes all my computer think that the device is actually a CD. I have tried various methods of removing this partition, but nothing seems to work. I have tried fdisk, which says $ fdisk -l /dev/sdb Cannot open /dev/sdb parted crashes when I try to use it on this device. I have even tried $ dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb but it just hangs with no output (either on screen or on disk). However, when I plug the USB in, it does mount, and I can view (but not edit) the files on it. edit: now the result is $ dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb dd: opening `/dev/sdb': Read-only file system I have also tried re-formatting it on Windows, but it gets to the end of the format process and then says "Couldn't format the drive". How can I remove this partition and get my whole USB drive back to normal again?   • CentOS 5.7 keeps rebooting after fresh installation

    I have just installed CentOS 5.7 x86_64 on a new computer. The installation went on without any issues. But, after it finnished, the machine started to show an awkward behaviour: it restarts every time it tries to boot. It happens after all the services have been started. The screen just goes black and it shows an error message from the monitor: Input not supported. And then it reboots. I took a look at the logs, but I couldn't manage to find anything. Any help? Update Before doing the hardware diagnosis, as pointed out, I decided to make some tests. First, I changed the runlevel to 3, adding the 3 parameter at the end of the kernel command. Then, after logging in in text mode, I checked the xorg.conf file out for some problems regarding the screen resolution. There was nothing unexpected set. Well, if there had to be a problem with it, I couldn't start the X server at the command line, right? So, I typed startx and Gnome started! So, probably, it's not an issue with the screen resolution, I suppose. Then I selected the Log Out root... Gnome menu option and something odd happened: the screen went black, the Input not supported monitor error message was displayed and the system rebooted. Yes, the same problem I was having while trying to boot! After that, I decided to try yet another test: I removed the rhgb quiet parameters from the kernel command to see if some error would show up. Well, to my surprise, the boot went on without problems! The Gnome login screen showed up, I logged in and the session started. But then I selected the Shut Down... menu option and guess what? Same problem: black screen, same monitor error and the system rebooted. Yes, it rebooted, it did not shut down. I repeated both of the tests and the behaviours were the same. I really don't know what's going on. It seems to be an issue regarding the changing of the screen mode or something like that. Any ideas? Could this be a hardware problem? Or does it seem to be something regarding the system configuration?

    New Ubuntu User Needs Help!- version 9.10 does not communicate with laptop Hello folks, Several days ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my Acer Aspire 3100 laptop, running it alongside Widows Vista as a dual-bootable system. Creation of the Ubuntu boot CD went fine, and the installation onto my hard drive was flawless. Ubuntu opens and behaves as I would expect, except for one little problem. For reasons unknown to me, Ubuntu is not communicating with my laptop's networking hardware, and I have no internet connectivity, even when sitting directly under the wireless router at the local library (literally), which puts out a wickedly-fast signal that my Windows Vista OS auto-detects and immediately connects to. Up in the right side of the Ubuntu desktop, I click on the network icon and it does not show a wireless connection at all, even though I am only a few feet from the router. At home, where I use a dialup modem, I also see no means of getting online. My modem is an HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP,manufactured by CXT (Conexant Systems Inc., file version 4.0.13.0, and the driver version is 7.58.0.0). I desparately wish to convert to Ubuntu. I used Mac for ten years, and then Windows for ten years. Now, after 20 years, I want to live out my days as an open-source Ubuntu fanatic. I am ready to give the old status quo the boot! I am an advanced computer user, but I am not a programmer. I seek a solution that is user-friendly for normal people, something equivalent to a driver that I can easily install or activate that will allow Ubuntu to see my hardware and get me connected. Can anyone help me over this hopefully-little glitch so that I can move on in total Ubuntu bliss? My processor is a Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+ at 1.80 GHz, 1.50 GB RAM, and a 32-bit Operating System. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic, Service Pack 2. My current email is [email protected] if you have a workable solution that does not require programmer status to implement. Surely this must be a simple fix that I simply am overlooking, but being the new guy on the block, I have yet to be enlightened. Thanks for your help in coming up to speed!!     someone told me that this piece of network hardware (NAS) has a security setting such that it can only be accessed by hostname, not by IP address. I don't understand, as I thought DNS resolved the hostname to an address on the connecting client's side, then at protocol level always used the raw address, so how can this 'security' measure be possible?

I've tried several things, like grabbing the LIDE 60 driver for Vista64, but nothing has worked so far.... Any ideas? Doesn't look like Canon wants to support its "more-than-six-months-old" own hardware.... disappointing, really.

  • Ubuntu Server 10.04 Heavy Network Traffic causes disconnect

    I'm currently running a headless Ubuntu 10.04 server. Installed is the LAMP stack, Joomla, Virtualbox, phpvirtualbox, webmin and proFTP.. It resolves the IP address so I can access it remotely (either the apache2 webserver or the FTP) using DDClient. Any packages installed have been installed using apt-get. Webmin, although discouraged in Ubuntu Server, is used mostly to administer the webserver aspect. This issue also appeared when I was using Ubuntu Server 10.10. After periods of heavy network traffic, whether local or remote, the connect drops. I'm talking specifically about the transfer of files via FTP, SCP or Samba (the latter of which I seldom use). There is no response to ping or ssh. I can't FTP to the server nor can I load the website. There are times when the server has been on for a few days and everything runs fine because I haven't accessed it much, if at all (thus not much network traffic). I've gone through a few hardware changes although I don't believe this has cause the issue: this has been happening long before I made any changes. At first I thought it was my ISP-provided router blocking traffic because of some kind of misconfiguration (perhaps assuming it was some kind of DoS attack). I've changed routers and still found no success. I've checked syslog, dmesg and kern.log for warnings but have uncovered none. I've ran memtest via the GRUB2 menu at boot and once it turned up 4 errors. I ran again with individual sticks of RAM in various slots and everything turned up fine. I've looked through the BIOS settings and everything looks fine. I've tried unplugging unnecessary pieces of hardware (other internal hard drives, CD drives, floppy, PCI cards, etc). Any help or tips on how I can even begin to troubleshoot this would be very much appreciated. Please note that i've only started playing with servers as a hobby so my knowledge wouldn't be the most refined. I'm comfortable with command line and have the initiative to know how to look up something I can't do. Unfortunately I can't seem to find any issues like this. Additionally: If a solution can't be found some assistance to write a script that will cause the server to reboot automatically if, after x minutes, it gets no response to pinging somewhere like google. Admittedly that's not the cleanest solution should my internet end up going down but I can't think of what else to do.

But after running Windows Update(which finds drivers for the hardware on my laptop), I only had to install a few (the ones with Unidentified Device) I'm wondering if this is good enough? or would I skip some important drivers like Chipset Thermo management etc etc that could potentially cause harm to my laptop?

  • for what reason live USB linux images are not 100% persistent?

    I understand that during CD-R times non-persistence had a purpose, but what's the purpose now that pretty much everyone uses USB flash drivers? not to mention USB3 sticks are pretty much 4x faster than my HD raid. I'm writing this while taking a break going over the linux from scratch guide... And i'm still baffled that this is not the norm already with all live images. So, Is there any reason (besides historical) that i'm missing and that will bite me after I finish this ext3-rw image?
