• VMWare Network bug in multiple VMWare Workstation versions if using a hardcoded IP address

  I'm having a very tricky problem with some of my VM sessions being unable to reach the Internet or even ping the gateway. I have just set up a new VM Workstation (7) on a W2K8 64bit server (I'll be converting to ESXI 4 once I can find a decent book on it, so for the meanwhile I use workstation). I have imported a number of VM's and setup some new ones on the server.In short the problem with some of the VM's being unable to reach the Internet is that they can't reach the gateway. I've looking at a number of things and can pretty safely rule out the following: Switch, Router, DHCP Server, DNS, Client IP configuration, Routes and typos. The problem is that some of the new clients cannot reach the gateway if their IP address is hardcoded, they can't even ping it by IP address. That rules out DNS and DHCP. Now, if I allow them to get their IP address by DHCP they can reach the gateway and Internet without issue. The interesting thing on this, is that this behavior occurs even if I leave the DNS information hardcoded under TCP/IP settings. It doesn't work unless the IP and gateway are handed out by DHCP even though the same information IP info is being used by the host. Fundamentally from the standpoint of the clients, they are trying to reach the exact same gateway using the exact same IP information regardless of whether they are hardcoded or assigned by DHCP. Here's an example of one client. IP Address 192.168.7.66 - Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 - Gateway 192.168.7.254 - DNS1 192.168.7.44 - DNS2 192.168.7.254. The issue occurs across six different microsoft operating systems, Windows 7 and Windows 2008 variants all have the issue. My W2K3, XP, Vista and W98 clients all work without issue with hardcoded IP addresses. I have tried things like rearranging the DNS order, flushing DNS and so on. It's not a routing or switch issue as the clients can work just fine if they get their IP by DHCP. It's not a paramater issue as the exact same paramaters are handed out by DHCP as I plug in by hand. It's not a DNS issue as clients cant reach other clients even with IP addresses only. I have run a tracert to the gateway by IP address and it times out on the very first hop before failing on hop3 with destination host unreachable. If I get the IP address by DHCP the tracert finds the gateway (and Internet) without issue. I have read a few other posts online in forums talking about this problem randomly occuring over the years in other VM versions as well, so I suspect some kind of long standing bug. Does anyone have any ideas on this? Is it possibly a bug with Windows 7 and W2K clients under VM?

• Subversion: What to do with branches, tags and trunk folders?

  A little background first: I'm a designer/developer and decided to use subversion for a personal project. I'm the only one working on this project. I've setup a Beanstalk account and installed Versions on Mac. Locally I have MySQL and PHP running through MAMP. First thing I did in Versions is click the 'checkout' button. I selected my webroot folder and a folder has been created with three subfolders: branches, tags, trunk. I don't understand what to do with this. My code lives in the webroot and a bunch of subfolders and I can't move my code to any of the three folders without breaking things. So, my question is, how do I tell Versions that my code is in the webroot folder and not in the folder it created itself?

• Windows 7 BSOD, safe mode working,

  I need help getting my dualboot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 to work, and since I'm not to experienced with computers I've been pretty dumb. Here's what I've done, quite shortend though: First removed a Ubuntu 10.04 partion, and replaced bootloader using EasyBCD Installed Ubuntu 12.04 on same partion as before Decided I need more space so I shrinked my C: partion (Windows partion) using Here, after rebooting my computer, I was stuck a grub rescue, when booting up the computer I fixed that by using SuperGrubDisk Rescatux and then using my Windows Vista install disk to repair the computer (computer is using Windows 7) I know re-installed Ubuntu 12.04 on the linux partion and got the GRUB-bootloader working Then, after using my computer for several hours, I installed beta drivers (version 304.79) for my GeForce GTS 240 and then rebooted my computer. At the first boot (after reboot) my computer just crashed, and here I am When trying to boot Windows 7 now I get a Blue Screen Of Death. I can though boot in to safe mode with everything working. I have uninstalled the beta drivers and installed the same one as before but still the same problem. I have tried all the commands in Bootrec.exe and none is working. I can't neither find an OS when using Bootrec.exe/ScanOs. I have also tried running: sfc/scannow and that comes out clean. Short: My harddrive and files seems to be intact but when booting I get bluescreen. I can though boot in to safemode with everything working.   A .NET 3.5 solution ended up with this warning when compiling with msbuild. Sometimes NDepend might help out but in this case it didn't give any further details. Like Bob I ended up having to resort to opening each assembly in ILDASM until I found the one that was referencing an older version of the dependant assembly. I did try using MSBUILD from VS 2010 Beta 2 (as the Connect article indicated this was fixed in the next version of the CLR) but that didn't provide any more detail either (maybe fixed post Beta 2) Is there a better (more automated) approach?

• Getting PATH right for python after MacPorts install

  I can't import some python libraries (PIL, psycopg2) that I just installed with MacPorts. I looked through these forums, and tried to adjust my PATH variable in $HOME/.bash_profile in order to fix this but it did not work. I added the location of PIL and psycopg2 to PATH. I know that Terminal is a version of python in /usr/local/bin, rather than the one installed by MacPorts at /opt/local/bin. Do I need to use the MacPorts version of Python in order to ensure that PIL and psycopg2 are on sys.path when I use python in Terminal? Should I switch to the MacPorts version of Python, or will that cause more problems?   I'm using google chrome beta version, recently i found all my saved authentications get lost when closing the window and reopen. It is not saving any passwords or "stay signed in" or "remember me in this computer". This applies for gmail, facebook, yahoo, etc. the issue is only with chrome, while firefox and IE are still ok. Is it something i messed up, or is it just chrome?

• Tracking unique versions of files with hashes

  I'm going to be tracking different versions of potentially millions of different files, and my intent is to hash them to determine I've already seen that particular version of the file. Currently, I'm only using MD5 (the product is still in development, so it's never dealt with millions of files yet), which is clearly not long enough to avoid collisions. However, here's my question - Am I more likely to avoid collisions if I hash the file using two different methods and store both hashes (say, SHA1 and MD5), or if I pick a single, longer hash (like SHA256) and rely on that alone? I know option 1 has 288 hash bits and option 2 has only 256, but assume my two choices are the same total hash length. Since I'm dealing with potentially millions of files (and multiple versions of those files over time), I'd like to do what I can to avoid collisions. However, CPU time isn't (completely) free, so I'm interested in how the community feels about the tradeoff - is adding more bits to my hash proportionally more expensive to compute, and are there any advantages to multiple different hashes as opposed to a single, longer hash, given an equal number of bits in both solutions?

  I want a test- and development-environment for web using Apache, PHP and MySQL. I need to be able to test a single web-application with multiple versions of PHP (5.2, 5.3, etc) and multiple versions of MySQL (5.0, 5.1, 5.5, etc). It shall be hosted on a FreeBSD server. My idea is to compile each version into a directory structure and running them on separate portnumbers. For example: opt/apache2.2-php5.2-mysql-5.0 (httpd on port 8801, mysql on port 8802) (directory contains each software, compiled and linked towards eachother) opt/apache2.2-php5.3-mysql-5.1 (httpd on port 8803, mysql on port 8804) (and so on) Any thoughts or suggestions of the best way to setup this type of environment?

  We created an application that uses Office 2007 (Excel 2007) to read in data from an Excel worksheet. However. I noticed that when I want to deploy the application on a system with Office 2003 installed, it crashes because other PIA's (and other dll's) need to be referenced for this version of office. Do I need to compile different versions of my application to be able to support different versions of Office or is there a more ellegant solution for this problem?   I have been looking in to doing some test driven development for one of the applications that I'm currently writing(OLE wrapper for an OLE object). The only problem is that I am using the express versions of Visual Studio(for now), at the moment I am using VB express but sometimes I use C# express. Is it possible to do TDD in the express versions? If so what are the bast was to go about it? Cheers. EDIT. By the looks of things I will have to buy the full visual studio so that I can do integrated TDD, hopefully there is money in the budget to buy a copy :).   Upon the uploading of an image in my application, 4 different sizes are created and saved using CarrierWaves version functionality. However, I am converting all of these versions to JPEG. The source file that is uploaded remains unchanged. So I can upload a TIFF file, and CarrierWave will create :large, :medium, :small, and :thumb versions. My problem is that these files all still end in .tif. Yet they are indeed JPEG files, as I've verified this with the file command. How can I write the filenames correctly for each version, and ensure that CarrierWave will report each version's name correctly?

• Click-Once deployment is leaving multiple versions (yes, more than 2)

  I've got a click once application that is leaving all old versions on my disk. It's an internal corporate application that gets frequent updates, so this is a disaster for rapidly inflating our backup size. According to the docs and other SO questions, it is supposed to only leave the current and previous versions on disk. However, each time I deploy the project and upgrade a client, I get another copy of all exe/dll/data files. I'm making no changes whatsoever to the application, just pushing deploy again in Visual Studio. Any ideas? Updates: The problem seems to happen on both Windows 7 and XP. 64 bit windows and 32. I've done a diff of the folders where the version is installed and the following files are different: MyApp.exe.manifest MyApp.exe.cdf-ms MyDll1.cdf-ms MyDll2.cdf-ms No actual executable files are different, nor the MyApp.manifest, MyDll1.manifest, etc.
