  I'm writing a jQuery application to allow analysis of data with the help of visual cues. My data is retrieved via XMLHttpRequest in the form of JSON. The visual cues include histograms, spark lines, and various other graph types. The idea is that the user is able to narrow their data via these various visual views. My question is thus - aside from the Google Charts API, does there exist a JavaScript way of presenting a Venn Diagram? Requirement: no Flash. Canvas is acceptable.

• Xrandr errors. BadName (named color or font does not exist)

  Hi, I've been looking and googling a lot, but I didn't find a solution to this problem. I was successfully using xrandr to extend my desktop in my work place with this little "script". #!/bin/sh xrandr --newmode 1920x1080 220.64 1920 2056 2264 2608 1080 1081 1084 1128 -HSync +Vsync xrandr --addmode VGA 1920x1080 xrandr --output VGA --mode 1920x1080 Everything was going well till one day that magically stop working. When I try to use it. I just get this message. X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist) The laptop display resizes in a strange way, but nothing happens with the extended monitor. I've restored gnome desktop default config. I changed the font config, I tried with other layouts and monitors, but always occur the same. So any Idea will be welcomed. My best regards.

  Very probably a noob question: For my application that uses an Oracle 8 DB, I am providing an SQL script to setup stuff like triggers, sequences etc., which can be copied and pasted into SQL*Plus. I would like the script to not stop with an error if a sequence that I am trying to create already exists. For a Trigger this can easily be done using "create or replace trigger ...", but for a sequence this does not work. Is there some alternative, like "if not exists mysequence then create sequence ..." (I tried this but it did not work :) ) Alternatively, if this is not possible, is there a way to do a "drop sequence mysequence" without SQL*Plus aborting the script if mysequence does not exist? Thanks. PS: I wish Oracle just had a simple Autoinc field type ... sigh.

  I ran a very basic query against one of our table and I noticed that the execution plan query processor is recommending that we create an index on a column The query is SELECT SUM(DATALENGTH(Data)) FROM Item WHERE Namespace = 'http://some_url/some_namespace/' After running, I get the following message // The Query Processor estimates that implementing the following index could improve the query cost by 96.7211%.   Hi My ASP.Net app is periodically getting the error 'Cannot find the object dbo."XXXX" because it does not exist or you do not have permissions' when it tries to execute a specific stored procedure that writes to the database. I have seen a few forum posts about this issue but the strange thing is that the method works fine almost all of the time, just every now and then I see it in my error logs. Can anyone tell me why this might works Ok most of the time but occassionally fire the error? Application is C# using Enterprise Library 4.1 Data Access. Database is SQL Server 2005 Cheers

  Hi everyone... i have a webservice that i want to test by typing the url in the address bar in the web browser localhost:1981/myProject/admin/autocomplete.asmx and when i do this it gives this compilation error CS0234: The type or namespace name 'Oledb' does not exist in the namespace 'System.Data' (are you missing an assembly reference?) i know this is because we added this in our web.config <add namespace="System.Data.Oledb"/> <add namespace ="System.Data"/> in the namespaces section..... when i call this web service through ajax it works but if i try to test it it gives this error. Is there any way to prevent this?

• are there any negative implications of sourcing a javascript file that does not actually exist?

  If you do script src="/path/to/nonexistent/file.js" in an HTML file and call that in a browser, and there are no dependencies or resources anywhere else in the HTML file that expect the file or code therein to actually exist, is there anything inherently bad-practice about doing this? Yes, it is an odd question. The rationale is the developer is dealing with a CMS that allows custom (self-contained) javascript files to be provided in certain circumstances. The problem is the CMS is not very flexible when it comes to creating conditional includes for javascript. Therefore it is easier to just make references to the self-contained js files regardless of whether they are actually at the specified path. Since no errors are displayed to the user, should this practice be considered a viable option?

  I'm finding that autotest has stopped working... $ autotest loading autotest/rails Autotest style autotest/rails doesn't seem to exist. Aborting. According to this blog post, the common reason for this error is that people don't have the autotest-rails gem installed. However, I definitely have that installed: autotest-rails (4.1.0) ZenTest (4.1.4, 4.1.3, 4.1.1, 4.0.0, 3.11.1, 3.11.0, 3.10.0, 3.9.3, 3.9.2) I haven't installed any new gems today or yesterday, though I might have done a gem update yesterday. Another issue I saw mentioned was incompatibility with Ruby 1.9, but I'm using MRI Ruby 1.8.6.

  Have built a small VB.Net app in VS2010. The connection string to the SQL Server is as follows: <connectionStrings> <add name="IWSR_DataDownloadWizard.My.MySettings.sqlConnection" connectionString="Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Data Source=SQLServer;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=IWSROL" providerName="System.Data.OleDb" /> </connectionStrings> Within the VS2010 environment AND on my machine, the connection works perfectly, however when I deploy to clients I get an error message of: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. I've tried to search the net for solutions, have seen a few instances of people saying to NOT use the Server Name but the IP Address instead (this doesn't work) and some saying to remove the "Provider=SQLOLEDB.1", again this doesn't work. Can anyone suggest a solution please? Further information: Development System is Windows7 using VS2010 Deployment systems are a combination of Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows 7 SQL Server is SQL2000 (soon to be SQL2005). TIA

  I always wondered why jQuery returns true if I'm trying to find elements by id selector that doesnt exist in the DOM structure. Like this: <div id="one">one</div> <script> console.log( !!$('#one') ) // prints true console.log( !!$('#two') ) // is also true! (empty jQuery object) console.log( !!document.getElementById('two') ) // prints false </script> I know I can use !!$('#two').length since length === 0 if the object is empty, but it seems logical to me that a selector would return the element if found, otherwise null (like the native document.getElementById does). F.ex, this logic can't be done in jQuery: var div = $('#two') || $('<div id="two"></div>'); Wouldnt it be more logical if the ID selector returned null if not found? anyone?

• Wordpress database query running slow - one of the columns doesn't exist!

  Hi there. I'm having some problems with the query that wordpress runs. That's the one: SELECT DISTINCT ID,post_title,post_date,post_content,MATCH(post_title,post_content) AGAINST ('S') AS score FROM wp_posts WHERE MATCH (post_title,post_content) AGAINST ('S') AND post_date <= 'S' AND post_status = 'S' AND id != N AND post_type = 'S' ORDER BY score DESC When I'm running this query in phpmyadmin it says that N column doesn't exist so clause "AND id != N" si not making any sense. I ran the query again without this clause and db behaved like fully optimized one. Please can someone give me a hint on that? My questions are: What this clause is used for? What wordpress is trying to find by running this and Can I modify core wordpress files to get rid of this clause? Any response or help greatly appreciated!!

  I have a data view webpart of some other list on my Dispform.aspx page. I have added edit and create new links in it. Create new item link is workin fine but when I m clicking on edit, its showing me error: No item exist at http:....listname/Dispform.aspx?ID=1&Source=http://...listname/Allitems.aspx. It may have been deleted or renamed by other user. I found this post related to it. http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointcustomization/thread/e368d7c7-8878-4f74-a62b-9ebad50c6b9a But now in my case the problem is I don't wanna customize Allitems.aspx, and what I have understood in the above post guys have suggested that to change the query string.I can only customize DispForm.aspx. Now the query string which is passing by default is ID=@ID from Allitems.aspx to DispForm.aspx...and I have to use this ID query string variable in my parameter if I m passing it on to the next page. • How do I bypass GUI in MFC app if command line options exist?

  I've got an existing simple MFC app that the user specifies the input file, output file, and then a "Process" button. I'd like to just add the capability so that the input/output files are command line parameters. But, if they exist, I don't want the GUI to show up. I just want the "Process" to execute. I see where I can get the command line parameters (m_lpCmdLine) but how can I bypass the displaying of the GUI? If I step into the app, it goes directly to winmain.cpp and displays the GUI without stepping into any of my code.

• SQLite - executeUpdate exception not caught when database does not exist? (Java)

  So I was purposely trying to break my program, and I've succeeded. I deleted the sqlite database the program uses, while the program was running, after I already created the connection. Then I attempted to update the database as seen below. Statement stmt; try { stmt = Foo.con.createStatement(); stmt.executeUpdate("INSERT INTO "+table+" VALUES (\'" + itemToAdd + "\')"); } catch(SQLException e) { System.out.println("Error: " + e.toString()); } The problem is, it didn't catch the exception, and continued to run as if the database was updated successfully. Meanwhile the database didn't even exist at that point since this was after I deleted it. Doesn't it check if the database still exists when updating? Do I have to check the database connection manually, every time I update to ensure that the database wasn't corrupted/deleted? Is this the way it is normally done, or is there a simpler/more robust approach? Thank you.

  I recently bought a UPS, however, the only outlets take this sort of connector: But, the other end of the cables is like this (right): The thing is, I really need to connect it to a power bar, so I need a cable that has one end like in the first photo, and the second end like this (right side): I've searched around for quite a while, and asked at a few shops, but cannot seem to find a cable that will fulfill this purpose. This seems crazy to me, as I would think that a UPS wouldn't only be able to be attached to devices that take the relatively obscure output seen on the right side of the second image I posted. Do I need to buy another UPS that has the proper connectors?? Please help!!

  BACKGROUND INFO: My Old Workstation Host: 32bit Ubuntu 9.04 running Sun Virtual Box 3.x hosting Windows-XP VM Guest for Windows Software app development (VS2008, etc) My New Workstation Host: 64bit Windows7 running VMWare Workstation 7 to host 32bit Ubuntu 9.10 for linux project work. NEEDS: I need to get my original Sun-VBox Windows-XP Guest running on my new Windows7 Workstation either imported into VMWare or running on the Windows version of Sun-Virtual box (I have the VM-Guest Backed up and copied to the new computer data drive. PROBLEM: I don't need to run VM's from Both Virtual-Machine Software packages at the same time... but I do need to run some older Virtual-Machines from Sun-Virtualbox on the same 64bit Windows7 host until I can migrate those VM's to VMWare. Before switching from Linux HOST to Windows HOST, I ensured to export the VirtualBox VM to an OVF "appliance" with intentions of importing into VMWare Workstation 7.. but VMWare gives me an error stating it can't import it QUESTION: Will installing Sun Virtual Box bash or interfere with my VMWare installtion?

• mysqld-nt.exe exist in task list, but actually it's not running?

  mysqld-nt.exe is showing in the task manager, but I cannot connect to it. I tried: telnet localhost 3306 And it fails to connect. So I restarted the server,and it's ok. This happens every day. Any ideas?   I keeping getting the error message from above on multiple computers that I administer. I wasn't sure if I should be posting this on SuperUser or ServerFault so my apologizes if it should go there... Basically, I have at least 5 computers of varying ages (some fresh out of the box!) throwing the above error. X:\ is one of our network drives that is mapped for users. Most of the time if you shut down the biggest application it will fix the problem, but it's becoming an increasing issue, and I can't keep running around fixing it manually. I have tried to do some research, but most of it just states the obvious without supplying a permanent fix. The machines are all running Win XP SP3, with at least 2gb of ram. Sorry for the delay in getting back to people... a lot of good questions. To respond back to people... It is a windows 2003 server that houses the file share. We have about 175 users, however i cannot state how many are actually accessing the information at a single moment. Considering that this is our largest file share, I would say that probably at least 100+. The files we work with are large, but not that big considering that we do a lot of graphical and video work. ~50mb. That being said, this is error occurs simply when trying to gain access to the server itself, not actual files. When I say close a program, I mean that it can be any program. It doesn't matter which program. It varies from machine to machine, and from day to day. Some days it is Firefox, some days it is Outlook, some days it is Excel. There doesn't seem to be a common bond behind which application could be causing the problem. Thank you for the articles, and the recommendation on paging files. I will have to look into that. None of our computers are set to hibernate, so I am going to rule that out.

This means that tomcat starts but nothing in that host gets deployed. • Matte or non-widescreen laptop? Do they exist?

  Does anyone know of any matte-screen laptops being sold now (15.6 or 17") in the UK? All I can find is the Dell Vostro 3500/3700 range, but there is a premium of around £200 over the price of their Inspiron range (for the 17" model), and I find it hard justifying the extra cost just to have a matte screen. I do not like glossy screens, but it seems the laptop industry has gone the way of "glossy is better - let's get rid of matte". I have read and heard from other developers that as long as there are no strong light sources to reflect off the screen, one can soon get used to a glossy screen, but I am yet to be convinced. I would also be interested if anyone knows of any non 16:9 screen laptops. I find this ratio too wide and not high-enough for the work I do. 16:10 or lower would be better. Any opinions would be appreciated. Alan

• Can a web server and XBMC HTPC co exist happily?

  I have a machine that is currently dedicated to running my home theatre. It is way more powerful than it needs to be, and spec wise would have no problem running both a few websites and an HTPC What I wanted to know is that is this was a reasonable thing to expect of a single machine? 90% of the time, all it's power would be just for the web server ( and the odd torrent) Currently it's running Windows, but I am pretty sure I will have to turn it into a Linux box Will I run into any problems? Is there anything I need to know before I start? Any prerequisites? The webserver will be required to run Ruby on Rails sites mainly, but might be called upon to run PHP for Wordpress also.
