  • Python or Ruby in 2011.

    - by Sleeper Smith
What I'm really asking is, in the current services and technologies provided, which is a more "useful" language? Which one has more opportunity? Some background info first. I'm a .net C# dev for 5 years. Having done a few projects on Amazon AWS, I'm looking to start a few projects of my own. But Azure's too expensive, and AWS has too much management overhead. My current choice is Google App Engine and Python. Logical enough. But what I want to ask here is this: In Linux world, which is more useful? Recently heard about Heroku for Ruby. How viable is this? Looking at the pricing model indicates that it's more expensive. Which one has more up-to-date and exciting open source projects? For instance Trac is just plain out dated compared to Redmine. One of the big reason pulling me for Ruby is Redmine. Implementations? IronPython/IronRuby/JRuby etc etc. Which one is more standardised and more implementation agnostic? Which one is easier to port between Windows/Linux? Anyway, your input and thoughts are greatly appreciated. thanks.

  • Sunspot_Rails Rake Aborted When Running Reindex

    - by Walter Chen
I'm getting the following output after running rake sunspot:reindex. I'm a novice at Rails. I want to add sunspot_rails to my project to add search functionality (with the hope of deploying the project with Heroku). I'm using Rails 3. I followed the instructions here: https://github.com/outoftime/sunspot/blob/master/sunspot_rails/README.rdoc. My various other attempts to diagnose the problem included: installing sunspot in addition to sunspot_rails. I ended up with sunspot_rails v. 1.2.0 and 1.2.1 so I uninstalled 1.2.1 because I have sunspot_rails 1.2.0. installed the nokogiri gem which I understand is a dependency for sunspot_rails. installed libxml2 separately following the instructions here to install nokogiri: http://www.engineyard.com/blog/2010/getting-started-with-nokogiri/ ** Invoke sunspot:reindex (first_time) ** Invoke environment (first_time) ** Execute environment ** Execute sunspot:reindex rake aborted! undefined local variable or method counter' for [removed pound]<Class:0x10359aef8> /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-3.0.3/lib/active_record/base.rb:1008:inmethod_missing' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/sunspot_rails-1.2.0/lib/sunspot/rails/searchable.rb:235:in solr_index' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-3.0.3/lib/active_record/relation/batches.rb:71:infind_in_batches' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-3.0.3/lib/active_record/base.rb:440:in __send__' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-3.0.3/lib/active_record/base.rb:440:infind_in_batches' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/sunspot_rails-1.2.0/lib/sunspot/rails/searchable.rb:234:in solr_index' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/sunspot_rails-1.2.0/lib/sunspot/rails/searchable.rb:184:insolr_reindex' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/sunspot_rails-1.2.0/lib/sunspot/rails/tasks.rb:57 /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/sunspot_rails-1.2.0/lib/sunspot/rails/tasks.rb:56:in each' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/sunspot_rails-1.2.0/lib/sunspot/rails/tasks.rb:56 /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:636:incall' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:636:in execute' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:631:ineach' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:631:in execute' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:597:ininvoke_with_call_chain' /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/monitor.rb:242:in synchronize' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:590:ininvoke_with_call_chain' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:583:in invoke' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2051:ininvoke_task' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2029:in top_level' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2029:ineach' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2029:in top_level' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2068:instandard_exception_handling' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2023:in top_level' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2001:inrun' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:2068:in standard_exception_handling' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:1998:inrun' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.7/bin/rake:31 /usr/bin/rake:19:in `load' /usr/bin/rake:19 This is what I have in class I'd like to search: searchable do text :fname text :mname text :lname, :default_boost => 2 end Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • dublicate display of Posts from controller - conditions and joins problem - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
I have built a blog application using Ruby on Rails. In the application I have posts and tags. Post has_many :tags and Tag belongs_to :post. In the /views/posts/index.html view I want to display two things. First is a listing of all posts displayed 'created_at DESC' and then in the side bar I am wanting to reference my Tags table, group records, and display as a link that allows for viewing all posts with that tag. With the code below, I am able to display the tag groups and succesfully display all posts with that tag. There are two problems with it thought. /posts view, the code seems to be referencing the Tag table and displaying the post multiple times, directly correlated to how many tags that post has. (i.e. if the post has 3 tags it will display the post 3 times). /posts view, only displays posts that have Tags. If the post doesn't have a tag, no display at all. /views/posts/index.html.erb <%= render :partial => @posts %> /views/posts/_post.html.erb <% div_for post do %> <h2><%= link_to_unless_current h(post.title), post %></h2> <i>Posted <%= time_ago_in_words(post.created_at) %></i> ago <%= simple_format h truncate(post.body, :length => 300) %> <%= link_to "Read More", post %> | <%= link_to "View & Add Comments (#{post.comments.count})", post %> <hr/> <% end %> /models/post.rb class Post < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :body, :title has_many :comments, :dependent => :destroy has_many :tags, :dependent => :destroy cattr_reader :per_page @@per_page = 10 end posts_controller.rb def index @tag_counts = Tag.count(:group => :tag_name, :order => 'updated_at DESC', :limit => 10) @posts=Post.all(:joins => :tags,:conditions=>(params[:tag_name] ? { :tags => { :tag_name => params[:tag_name] }} : {} ) ).paginate :page => params[:page], :per_page => 5 respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @posts } format.json { render :json => @posts } format.atom end end

  • Using MongoDB with Ruby On Rails and the Mongomapper plugin

    - by Micke
Hello, i am currently trying to learn Ruby On Rails as i am a long-time PHP developer so i am building my own community like page. I have came pritty far and have made the user models and suchs using MySQL. But then i heard of MongoDB and looked in to it a little bit more and i find it kinda nice. So i have set it up and i am using mongomapper for the connection between rails and MongoDB. And i am now using it for the News page on the site. I also have a profile page for every User which includes their own guestbook so other users can come to their profile and write a little message to them. My thought now is to change the User models from using MySQL to start using MongoDB. I can start by showing how the models for each User is set up. The user model: class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :guestbook, :class_name => "User::Guestbook" The Guestbook model model: class User::Guestbook < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user has_many :posts, :class_name => "User::Guestbook::Posts", :foreign_key => "user_id" And then the Guestbook posts model: class User::Guestbook::Posts < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :guestbook, :class_name => "User::Guestbook" I have divided it like this for my own convenience but now when i am going to try to migrate to MongoDB i dont know how to make the tables. I would like to have one table for each user and in that table a "column" for all the guestbook entries since MongoDB can have a EmbeddedDocument. I would like to do this so i just have one Table for each user and not like now when i have three tables just to be able to have a guestbook. So my thought is to have it like this: The user model: class User include MongoMapper::Document one :guestbook, :class_name => "User::Guestbook" The Guestbook model model: class User::Guestbook include MongoMapper::EmbeddedDocument belongs_to :user many :posts, :class_name => "User::Guestbook::Posts", :foreign_key => "user_id" And then the Guestbook posts model: class User::Guestbook::Posts include MongoMapper::EmbeddedDocument belongs_to :guestbook, :class_name => "User::Guestbook" But then i can think of one problem.. That when i just want to fetch the user information like a nickname and a birthdate then it will have to fetch all the users guestbook posts. And if each user has like a thousand posts in the guestbook it will get really much to fetch for the system. Or am i wrong? Do you think i should do it any other way? Thanks in advance and sorry if i am hard to understand but i am not so educated in the english language :)

  • Heroku Push Problem part 2 - Postgresql - PGError Relations does not exist - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
Ok so got through my last problem with the difference between Postgresql and SQLite and seems like Heroku is telling me I have another one. I am new to ruby and rails so a lot of this stuff I can't decipher at first. Looking for a little direction here. The error message and PostsController Index are below. I checked my routes.rb file and all seems well there but I could be missing something. I will post if you need. Processing PostsController#index (for 99.7.50.140 at 2010-04-23 15:19:22) [GET] ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid (PGError: ERROR: relation "tags" does not exist : SELECT a.attname, format_type(a.atttypid, a.atttypmod), d.adsrc, a.attnotnull FROM pg_attribute a LEFT JOIN pg_attrdef d ON a.attrelid = d.adrelid AND a.attnum = d.adnum WHERE a.attrelid = '"tags"'::regclass AND a.attnum > 0 AND NOT a.attisdropped ORDER BY a.attnum ): PostsController#index def index @tag_counts = Tag.count(:group => :tag_name, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 20) conditions, joins = {}, :votes @ugtag_counts = Ugtag.count(:group => :ugctag_name, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 20) conditions, joins = {}, :votes @vote_counts = Vote.count(:group => :post_title, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 20) conditions, joins = {}, :votes unless(params[:tag_name] || "").empty? conditions = ["tags.tag_name = ? • Stop output of image if no record - paperclip - Ruby on rails

    - by bgadoci
    I have just installed paperclip into my ruby on rails blog application. Everything is working great...too great. I am trying to figure out how to tell paperclip not to output anything if there is no record in the table so that I don't have broken image links everywhere. How, and where, do I do this? Here is my code: class Post < ActiveRecord::Base has_attached_file :photo, :styles => { :small => "150x150"} validates_presence_of :body, :title has_many :comments, :dependent => :destroy has_many :tags, :dependent => :destroy has_many :ugtags, :dependent => :destroy has_many :votes, :dependent => :destroy belongs_to :user after_create :self_vote def self_vote # I am assuming you have a user_id field in `posts` and `votes` table. self.votes.create(:user => self.user) end cattr_reader :per_page @@per_page = 10 end View <% div_for post do %> <div id="post-wrapper"> <div id="post-photo"> <%= image_tag post.photo.url(:small) %> </div> <h2><%= link_to_unless_current h(post.title), post %></h2> <div class="light-color"> <i>Posted <%= time_ago_in_words(post.created_at) %></i> ago </div> <%= simple_format truncate(post.body, :length => 600) %> <div id="post-options"> <%= link_to "Read More >>", post %> | <%= link_to "Comments (#{post.comments.count})", post %> | <%= link_to "Strings (#{post.tags.count})", post %> | <%= link_to "Contributions (#{post.ugtags.count})", post %> | <%= link_to "Likes (#{post.votes.count})", post %> </div> </div> <% end %>

  • Ruby: Parse, replace, and evaluate a string formula

    - by Swartz
I'm creating a simple Ruby on Rails survey application for a friend's psychological survey project. So we have surveys, each survey has a bunch of questions, and each question has one of the options participants can choose from. Nothing exciting. One of the interesting aspects is that each answer option has a score value associated with it. And so for each survey a total score needs to be calculated based on these values. Now my idea is instead of hard-coding calculations is to allow user add a formula by which the total survey score will be calculated. Example formulas: "Q1 + Q2 + Q3" "(Q1 + Q2 + Q3) / 3" "(10 - Q1) + Q2 + (Q3 * 2)" So just basic math (with some extra parenthesis for clarity). The idea is to keep the formulas very simple such that anyone with basic math can enter them without resolving to some fancy syntax. My idea is to take any given formula and replace placeholders such as Q1, Q2, etc with the score values based on what the participant chooses. And then eval() the newly formed string. Something like this: f = "(Q1 + Q2 + Q3) / 2" # some crazy formula for this survey values = {:Q1 => 1, :Q2 => 2, :Q3 => 2} # values for substitution result = f.gsub(/(Q\d+)/) {|m| values[$1.to_sym] } # string to be eval()-ed eval(result) So my questions are: Is there a better way to do this? I'm open to any suggestions. How to handle formulas where not all placeholders were successfully replaced (e.g. one question wasn't answered)? Ex: {:Q3 = 2} wasn't in values hash? My idea is to rescue eval()... any thoughts? How to get proper result? Should be 2.5, but due to integer arithmetic, it will truncate to 2. I can't expect people who provide the correct formula (e.g. / 2.0 ) to understand this nuance. I do not expect this, but how to best protect eval() from abuse (e.g. bad formula, manipulated values coming in)? Thank you!

  • Installing Paperclip - "undefined method `has_attached_file` for" - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
I just installed the plugin for Paperclip and I am getting an error message "undefined method has_attached_file for. Not sure why I am getting this. Here is the full error message. NoMethodError (undefined method `has_attached_file' for #<Class:0x10338acd0>): /Users/bgadoci/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/will_paginate-2.3.12/lib/will_paginate/finder.rb:170:in `method_missing' app/models/post.rb:2 app/controllers/posts_controller.rb:50:in `show' For some reason it is referencing the will_paginate gem. From what I can find, it seems that either there is something wrong w/ my PostsController#index or perhaps a previously attempt at installing the gem instead of the plugin (in which case I have read I should be able to remedy through the /config/environments.rb file somehow). I didn't think that previous gem installation would matter as I did it in an old version of the site that I trashed before installing the plugin. In the current version of the site I show that the Table has been updated with the Paperclip columns after migration. Here is my code: PostsController#index def index @tag_counts = Tag.count(:group => :tag_name, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 20) conditions, joins = {}, :votes @vote_counts = Vote.count(:group => :post_title, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 20) conditions, joins = {}, :votes unless(params[:tag_name] || "").empty? conditions = ["tags.tag_name = ? • Ruby on rails model and controllers inside of different namespaces

    - by Nelson LaQuet
OK. This is insane. I'm new to RoR and I really want to get into it as everything about it that I have seen so far makes it more appealing to the type of work that I do. However, I can't seem to accomplish a very simple thing with RoR. I want these controlers: /admin/blog/entries (index/show/edit/delete) /admin/blog/categories (index/show/edit/delete) /admin/blog/comments (index/show/edit/delete) ... and so on And these models: Blog::Entry (table: blog_entries) Blog::Category (table: blog_categories) Blog::Comments (table: blog_comments) ... and so on Now, I have already gone though quite a bit of misery to make this work. My first attempt was with generating scaffolding (I'm using 2.2.2). I generated my scaffolding, but had to move my model, then fix the references to the model in my controller (see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/903258/ruby-on-rails-model-inside-namespace-cant-be-found-in-controller). That is already a big of a pain, but hey, I got it to work. Now though form_for won't work and I cannot figure out how to use the url helpers (I have no idea what these are called... they are the automatically generated methods that return URLs to controllers associated with a model). I cannot figure out what their name is. My model is Blog::Entries. I have tried to mess with the route.rb's map's resource method, but no luck. When I attempt to use form_for with my model, I get this error undefined method `blog_entries_path' for #<ActionView::Base:0xb6848080> Now. This is really quite frustrating. I am not going to completely destroy my code's organization in order to use this framework, and if I cannot figure out how to accomplish this simple task (I have been researching this for at least 5 hours) then I simply cannot continue. Are there any ideas on how to accomplish this? • How to execute a Ruby file in Java, capable of calling functions from the Java program and receiving primitive-type results?

    - by Omega
I do not fully understand what am I asking (lol!), well, in the sense of if it is even possible, that is. If it isn't, sorry. Suppose I have a Java program. It has a Main and a JavaCalculator class. JavaCalculator has some basic functions like public int sum(int a,int b) { return a + b } Now suppose I have a ruby file. Called MyProgram.rb. MyProgram.rb may contain anything you could expect from a ruby program. Let us assume it contains the following: class RubyMain def initialize print "The sum of 5 with 3 is #{sum(5,3)}" end def sum(a,b) # <---------- Something will happen here end end rubyMain = RubyMain.new Good. Now then, you might already suspect what I want to do: I want to run my Java program I want it to execute the Ruby file MyProgram.rb When the Ruby program executes, it will create an instance of JavaCalculator, execute the sum function it has, get the value, and then print it. The ruby file has been executed successfully. The Java program closes. Note: The "create an instance of JavaCalculator" is not entirely necessary. I would be satisfied with just running a sum function from, say, the Main class. My question: is such possible? Can I run a Java program which internally executes a Ruby file which is capable of commanding the Java program to do certain things and get results? In the above example, the Ruby file asks the Java program to do a sum for it and give the result. This may sound ridiculous. I am new in this kind of thing (if it is possible, that is). WHY AM I ASKING THIS? I have a Java program, which is some kind of game engine. However, my target audience is a bunch of Ruby coders. I don't want to have them learn Java at all. So I figured that perhaps the Java program could simply offer the functionality (capacity to create windows, display sprites, play sounds...) and then, my audience can simply code with Ruby the logic, which basically justs asks my Java engine to do things like displaying sprites or playing sounds. That's when I though about asking this.

  • Using AJAX to display error message Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
    I have built a blog using Ruby on Rails. New to both. I am implementing AJAX pretty effectively until I get to the error handling portion. I allow for comments on posts and do this by rendering a comment partial and remote form in the /views/posts/show.html.erb page. Upon successful save of a comment the show page is updated using views/comments/create.js.rjs and displays a flash notice. I am simply trying to flash a notice when it doesn't save. Searched around and worked this a bit on my own. Can't get it to fly. Here is my code: /views/posts/show.html.erb <div id="comments"> <%= render :partial => @post.comments %> <div id="notice"><%= flash[:notice] %></div> </div> <% remote_form_for [@post, Comment.new] do |f| %> <p> <%= f.label :body, "New Comment" %><br/> <%= f.text_area (:body, :class => "textarea") %> </p> <p> <%= f.label :name, "Name" %><br/> <%= f.text_field (:name, :class => "textfield") %> </p> <p> <%= f.label :email, "Email" %><br/> <%= f.text_field (:email, :class => "textfield") %> </p> <p><%= f.submit "Add Comment" %></p> <% end %> /views/comments/_comment.html.erb <% div_for comment do %> <div id="comment-wrapper"> <% if admin? %> <div id="comment-destroy"><%=link_to_remote "X", :url => [@post, comment], :method => :delete %></div> <% end %> <%= h(comment.body) %><br/><br/> <div class="small">Posted <%= time_ago_in_words(comment.created_at) %> ago by <%= h(comment.name) %> <% if admin? %> | <%= h(comment.email) %> <% end %></div> </div> <% end %> /views/comments/create.js.rjs page.insert_html :bottom, :comments, :partial => @comment page[@comment].visual_effect :highlight page[:new_comment].reset page.replace_html :notice, flash[:notice] flash.discard CommentsController#create def create @post = Post.find(params[:post_id]) @comment = @post.comments.create!(params[:comment]) respond_to do |format| if @comment.save flash[:notice] = "Thanks for adding this comment" format.html { redirect_to @post } format.js else flash[:notice] = "Make sure you include your name and a valid email address" format.html { redirect_to @post } format.js end end end

  • Compiled ruby fails to find curses

    - by Hamish Downer
I'm attempting to install the sup MUA but I'm having trouble. When I try to run it, it can't find curses: /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `gem_original_require': no such file to load -- curses (LoadError) ... I am installing on a server running CentOS 5. I have compiled ruby and rubygems from source, and then installed sup using rubygems. I followed this article to compile ruby. I have found having a similar problem on ubuntu. The fix suggested there is to install libcurses-ruby, but I can't find a similarly named package in CentOS. I have installed the ncurses-devel package, as that was required for installing sup using gem. I have also installed the ncurses, cursesx and rbcurse gems, but none of these have fixed the problem. The article above about compiling ruby said you had to recompile the zlib extension, after doing: cd ext/zlib sudo ruby extconf.rb --with-zlib-include=/usr/include --with-zlib-lib=/usr/lib cd ../.. sudo make sudo make install So I've tried a few variants in ext/curses. The top few lines of ext/curses/extconf.rb are require 'mkmf' dir_config('curses') dir_config('ncurses') dir_config('termcap') So I've tried a few variants of setting paths: sudo ruby extconf.rb --with-curses-include=/usr/include --with-curses-lib=/usr/lib --with-ncurses-include=/usr/include --with-ncurses-lib=/usr/lib --with-termcap-lib=/lib sudo ruby extconf.rb --with-curses-include=/usr/include --with-curses-lib=/usr/lib --with-termcap-lib=/lib and re-doing the make, but to no avail as yet. Any ideas to move it forward are welcome.

  • Error when pushing to Heroku - ...appear in group - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
I am trying to deploy my first rails app to Heroku and seem to be having a problem. After git push heroku master, and heroku rake db:migrate I get an error saying: SELECT posts.*, count(*) as vote_total FROM "posts" INNER JOIN "votes" ON votes.post_id = posts.id GROUP BY votes.post_id ORDER BY created_at DESC LIMIT 5 OFFSET 0): I have included the full error below and also included the PostControll#index as it seems that is where I am doing the grouping. • Login or Register (Ruby on rails)

    - by DanielZ
Hello stackoverflow, I'm working on an Ruby on Rails application (2.3.x) and i want to make a form that lets the user login or register. I want to do this in the same form. I have a JS function that replaces the form elements like this: Login form: <% form_for @user do |f| %> <div id="form"> <%= f.label :email, "E-mail" %> <%= f.text_field :email %> <%= f.label :password, "Password" %> <%= f.password_field :password %> <%= link_to "I don't have an account, "#", :id => "changeForm"%> <%= f.submit "Login" %> </div> <% end %> The id "changeForm" triggers a JS function that changes the form elements. So if you press the url the html looks like this: <% form_for @user do |f| %> <div id="form"> <%= f.label :name, "Name" %> <%= f.text_field :name %> <%= f.label :email, "E-mail" %> <%= f.text_field :email %> <%= f.label :password, "Password" %> <%= f.password_field :password %> <%= f.label :password_confirmation, "Password confirmation" %> <%= f.password_field :password_confirmation %> <%= link_to "I do have an account, "#", :id => "changeForm"%> <%= f.submit "Register" %> </div> <% end %> I added the neccesary validations to my user model: class User < ActiveRecord::Base attr_reader :password validates_presence_of :name, :email, :password validates_format_of :email, :with => /\A([^@\s]+)@((?:[-a-z0-9]+\.)+[a-z]{2,})\Z/i validates_confirmation_of :password But what happens when you fill in the email / password you get the errors that the name is missing and that the password fields aren't confirmed. So i could do some nasty programming in my user model like this: #if password_conf or the name are present the user has tried to register... if params[:user][:password_confirmation].present? || params[:user][:name].present? #so we'll try to save the user if @user.save #if the user is saved authenticate the user current_session.user = User.authenticate(params[:user]) #if the user is logged in? if current_session.user.present? flash[:notice] = "succesvully logged redirect_to some_routes_path else #not logged in... flash[:notice] = "Not logged in" render :action => "new" end else #user not saved render :action => "new" end else #So if the params[:user][:password_confirmation] or [:user][:name] weren't present we geuss the user wants to login... current_session.user = User.authenticate(params[:user]) #are we logged_in? if current_session.user.present? flash[:notice] = "Succesvully logged in" redirect_to some_routes_path else #errors toevoegen @user.errors.add(:email, "The combination of email/password isn't valid") @user.errors.add(:password," ") render :action => "new" end end end Without validations this (imho dirty code and should not be in the controller) works. But i want to use the validates_presence_of methods and i don't want to slap the "conventions over configurations" in the face. So another thing i have tried is adding a hidden field to the form: #login form <%= f.hidden_field :login, :value => true %> # and ofcourse set it to false if we want to register. And then i wanted to use the method: before_validation before_validation_on_create do |user| if params[:user].login == true #throws an error i know... validates_presence_of :email, :password validates_format_of :email, :with => /\A([^@\s]+)@((?:[-a-z0-9]+\.)+[a-z]{2,})\Z/i else validates_presence_of :name, :email, :password validates_format_of :email, :with => /\A([^@\s]+)@((?:[-a-z0-9]+\.)+[a-z]{2,})\Z/i validates_confirmation_of :password end end But this doesn't work because i can't access the params. And login isn't a attribute for the user object. But i thought that in this way i could validate the email and password params if the user wants to login. And all the other attrs if the user want to register. So all i could think of doesn't work how i want it to work. So my main goal is this: 1 form for login/register with the use of the validation methods in the user model. So if we want to login but don't fill in any information = give validation errors. And if the user wants to login but the email/password combination doens't match give the "@user.errors.add(:email, "the combination wasn't found in the db...")". And the same goes for user register... Thanks in advance!

  • Resolving NameErrors -- Getting NameError on RAILS_END in rails_end.rb When using desert plugin and

    - by dr
What's an effective approach to debug NameErrors in Rails? I'm trying to use the desert plugin (0.5.0) and the edge version of Community_Engine. I've started from scratch and gone through the installation instructions. When I attempt to start my server, I get this error: "Constant RAILS_END from rails_end.rb not found (NameError)". Problem is I cannot find rails_end.rb, nor can I find a google reference to this file or error. I've verified that the required gems are installed and current. I've dug around google and desert, but haven't found any reference to this constant. Any ideas? Which is the best Git library in Ruby to use? Git, Grit, Rugged, Other? Background: I'm the current maintainer of TicGit-ng which is a distributed offline ticket system built on git, and I've read and heard over and over again that Grit is the one I should use because it supersedes the Git gem, but there seems to be either a lack of documentation or a lack of features because myself and others have failed in trying to switch from the deprecated-but-functional Git to the newer Grit gem.

  • What is a practical way to debug Rails?

    - by Joshua Fox
I get the impression that in practice, debuggers are rarely used for Rails applications. (Likewise for other Ruby apps, as well as Python.) We can compare this to the usual practice for Java or VisualStudio programmers--they use an interactive debugger in a graphical IDE. How do people debug Rails applications in practice? I am aware of the variety of debuggers, so no need to mention those, but do serious Rails programmers work without them? If so, why do you choose to do it this way? It seems to me that console printing has its limits when debugging complex logic.
