In this talk, I discussed a Master/Detail application that runs on Android 2.2 devices and forward. I used the Actionbar compat Android library to allow the older devices to have an actionbar. I also used a SQLite database for my data. And just to add one last thing, I also incorporated the use of custom fonts. If you are interesting in looking at this sample application, I have uploaded it to my GitHub account here.   Yes I know that it shouldn't be abused and that C# is primariy used as a static language. But seriously folks if you could just dirty up some code, in the python style, or create some dynamic do hicky, would you? My mind is working overtime on this having spent a while loving the dynamics of python, is c# going over to the dark side through the back door? Is the argument for static typing a dead one with this obvious addition? Is the argument for less Unit testing a bit silly when we are all grown ups? Or has the addition of dynamics ruined a strongly static typed and well designed language?

  I have a query with a sum in it like this: SELECT Table1.ID, SUM(Table2.[Number1] + Table2.[Number2]) AS SumColumn FROM Table1 INNER JOIN Table3 ON Table1.ID = Table3.ID INNER JOIN Table2 ON Table3.ID = Table2.ID WHERE (Table2.[Something] = 'Whatever') GROUP BY Table1.ID, Table2.[Number1] , Table2.[Number2] and it gives me a table like this: ID SumColumn 67 1 67 4 70 2 70 6 70 3 70 6 80 5 97 1 97 3 How can I make it give me a table like this, where the SumColumn is summed, grouped by the ID column? ID SumColumn 67 5 70 17 80 5 97 4 I cannot GROUP BY SumColumn because I get an error (Invalid column name 'SumColumn'.) COALESCE doesn't work either. Thanks in advance. EDIT: Just grouping by the ID gives me an error: [Number1, Number2 and the other column names that I'm selecting] is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause.

  Lets say I have such a table: id|time|operation 1 2 read 2 5 write 3 3 read 4 7 read 5 2 save 6 1 open and now I would like to do two things: Divide all these records into two groups: 1) all rows where operation equals to "read" 2) all other rows. Sum the time in each group. So that my query would result only into two rows. What I got so far is: select sum(time) as total_time, operation group by operation ; Although that gives me many groups, depending on the number of distinct operations. How I could group them only into two categories? Cheers!

• Group readable cron jobs a security risk?

  Hi, I was just wondering, is using a cron job that is group readable a security risk? In this case, the script is chmod 755, and the group is basically a group of the sysadmins on the machine. The permissions seem to be fine, but I'm just wondering whether it's a bad idea to keep this script in a group or world readable place because it's a backup script that needs to be run as root.   Hi, since Teamspeak version 3 sends lots of packets per user and our provider is getting problems with his infrastructure above 20.000 packets per second we have to limit it that our servers are not going to be shut down. Red a lot about iptables but was not able to find the right rules. Could you give me an advise how to manage that the server is not going to send more than 19k packets per seconds?   Hi, I'm trying to make decisions on buying a new PC. I have most specifications (processor/graphic card/hard disk) pin-downed except for RAM. I am wondering what is the best RAM configuration for the amount of money I'm spending. As the question of best is subjective, I'd like to know how would I calculate the value of RAM sticks sold. 1.(sample)The value of amount of memory: 1) CORSAIR PC1333 D3 2GB = costs $80 2) CORSAIR PC1333 D3 4GB = costs $190 would it be better to buy 2 of item 1) instead of 1 of item 2) ?? Although I would normally choose to have 1 of 2) as the difference is only (190-(80*2)) = 30 as I would save 1 DIMM slot, What I need is the value per amount: 1) 80/ 2 = $40 per 1GB 2) 190/ 4 = $47.5 per 1GB 2. The value of frequency: 1) CORSAIR PC1333 4GB = costs 190 2) CORSAIR PC1600C7 4GB = costs 325 Im not even sure of the denominator ... $ per 1 ghz speed? 3. The value of latency: 1) CORSAIR CMP1600C8 8-8-8-24 2GBx3 (triple channel) = costs 589 2) CORSAIR CMP1600C7D 7-7-7-20 2GBx3 (triple channel) = costs 880 Im not even sure of the denominator ... $ per 1 ghz speed? Just for your information i'd like to get the best out of the money im going to spend to put on a 6 DIMM slot i7core motherboard.

• Instructions per cycle?

  I've been learning a little bit more about how processors work, but I haven't been able to find a straight answer about instructions per cycle. For instance, I was under the impression that a four core CPU could execute four instructions per cycle, so a four core CPU running at 2Ghz would execute 8 billion operations per second. Is this the case? I'm sure it's oversimplifying things, but if there's a guide or something else I can use to set myself straight, I'm definitely open to ideas.

• Throttling bandwidth on a per group basis

  I am wondering if it is possible to create a bandwidth shaping/throttling script that shapes traffic based on user group. That is, if user1, user2, are in user group group1, they will have 1mb/s download and 1mb/s upload, whilst if user3 and user4 are in group2, they will have 256kb/s download and 256kb/s upload. I've read a bit about this and I found some iptables and TC implementations of a per user solution, but I have not seen anything for a user group. Hopefully it can be simply implemented in form of a custom iptables rules and script running with TC or the like. Here is a script I was looking into that does a system wide throttle: http://atmail.com/kb/2009/throttling-bandwidth/ I assume it is possible to do user group throttling since it is possible for throttling on a per user basis.   If I have two columns, one with very high cardinality and one with very low cardinality (unique # of values), does it matter in which order I group by? • Why doesn't Oracle SQL allow us to use column aliases in GROUP BY clauses?

  This is a situation I'm generally facing while writing SQL queries. I think that writing the whole column (e.g. long case expressions, sum functions with long parameters) instead of aliases in GROUP BY expressions makes the query longer and less readable. Why doesn't Oracle SQL allow us to use the column aliases in GROUP BY clause? There must be an important reason behind it.

ElectricityReading.sum(:electricity_value, :group => "electricity_timestamp", :having => ["electricity_timestamp = '2010-02-14 23:30:00'"]) My data sets are extremely large, 100k upwards so I was wondering if its possible to use the find_each to batch this to help with memory overhead. I can write the batching manually use limit and offset I guess but I'd like to avoid that if the code already exists.

• Domain Controllers group not reflected in domain controllers credentials

  I set up a small testlab in vbox consisting of four servers. Two domain controllers dc01, dc02, one offline root ca and one online enterprise sub ca, ca01. All servers are based on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard. Everything works as excpected except one thing. If I issue a certificate template with read, enroll and autoenroll rights to the security group "domain controllers" it does not let dc01 or dc02 to enumerate or enroll for the certificate. I've restarted both domain controllers several times to update their credential tokens with the correct group memberhips. So I added dc01 to the "domain computers" group and gave that group read, enroll and autoenroll rights in the template, bam, the certificate was issued. So my question is, why isn't the domain controllers group memberhips reflected in the domain controllers (dc01 and dc02) credentials? Can I view the computers credentials somehow and how should I go about trying to resolve the issue?

Every user gets these policies correctly. The OU that is set is the root of the domain. (for testing purpose - I did that to eliminate hierarchy issues - did not help) Block Inheritance is disabled. Hence, we end up spending for something we might never put into the actual use it was intended for. You buy a pistol and when a burglar breaks in you fire the gun either to scare or disable the intruder. We hope we will never have to use these things; but we still buy them for the peace of mind that comes from knowing we can secure or protect our family and home.
