  • Windows 7 upgrade licensing

    I'm having trouble wading through Microsoft's marketing information. Does anyone know if Windows 7 x86 to Windows 7 x64 is a valid upgrade path? I know you can't actually use the built-in "upgrade" installation path; this is more of a licensing question. Although that may have answered my own question: is this idea even possible? Or do "upgrade" versions of Windows function only when executed from inside the OS, and not when doing fresh installs? Thanks!

    I need the Abode CS 4 software for only 50 days. Unfortunately it allows me a trial of only 30 days. Here's what I plan to do. I have two partitions on my computer - one with vista and one with win 7. Can I first install Adobe s/w trial on Vista and after 30 days install it on Win 7. Will it work and is it legal to do so?   • Accessing the Local System Account to accept a software licence

    Hi All, I have a server at the moment running ColdFusion which is being used to access a windows whois program on the server. Each time I call this command via ColdFusion (using cfexecute) the command times out. I believe the issue is because the first time a user runs the .exe file they are asked to accept the licence. ColdFusion is currently set to run under the Local System account and I am just wondering if it is possible to somehow log into this account and run the program manually via the console so that I can accept the licence. I guess my only other option is to change the account ColdFusion runs under, but I would rather not do this.

  • Microsoft CALs for Domain Controller

    I am designing a network and I've come to the point of specifying out the number of CALs required for this network. Microsoft licensing has always confused me, it's just not always clear to me. I plan to have 1 2008 std domain controller, another 2008 server (not a domain controller) and 200 Windows 7 devices connected to the domain for domain services. The 200 W7 devices will all authenticate to the domain controller with the same domain account. (this is a special type of network, not a user workstation network) Therefore, do I need to purchase 200 CALS for the 200 devices, or can I purchase say 10 CALS (user CALS) as the amount of unique user accounts is very low.   • Is there a precedent for the license on a compiler restricting the kind of development you can use it for?

    It was recently let slip that the new EULA for Delphi XE3 will prohibit Client Server development with the Professional edition without the additional purchase of a Client Server license pack. This is not to say the Professional version will lack the features, but the license will specifically prohibit the developer from using the compiler for a specific class of development, even with 3rd party or home grown solutions. So my question is if there is a precedent of a compiler or similar creative tool prohibiting the class of work you can use it for. Specifically a commercially licensed "professional" tool like Delphi XE3. Also, would such a restriction be legally enforceable? I know there have been educational edition or starter edition tools in the past that have restricted their use for commercial purposes, but those were not sold as "professional" tools. Also I know that a lot of computing software and equipment will have a disclaimer that it is not for use in "life support equipment" or "nuclear power" but that is more of avoiding liability than prohibiting activity. Seems like I recall Microsoft putting a restriction in FrontPage that you couldn't use it to create a web site that reflected poorly on Microsoft, but they pulled that restriction before it could be tested legally.

    Ø       Some of you may wonder why we changed the product name from Oracle Enterpraise Taxation Manament (ETM) to Oracle Enterprise and Policy Management(ETPM).   When Oracle added a limited use license for Oracle Policy Automation to the Oracle Enterprise Taxation Management license, the license was re-named to Oracle Enterprise Taxation and Policy Management.  Ø     When referring to versions 2.2 and prior, the proper name is Oracle Enterprise Taxation Management (ETM) Ø     When referring to versions 2.3 and later, the proper name is Oracle Enterprise and Policy Management (ETPM) Ø     To take advantage of the limited use license for Oracle Policy Automation, customers must transition from the ETM license to the ETPM license.  However, they can remain on their ETM license if they are not going to take advantage of Oracle Policy Automation features.

    I want to use a GPL'd library in my C# application, but not necessarily release my own code under the GPL. If I understand correctly linking against a GPL'd library using dynamic linking and not distributing the library in question means I can license my own app in any way I want (the users of my software would then be required to install the library themselves). Please correct me if I'm wrong. My question is: how can I link against a DLL this way in C#? Do I only need to use C#'s using directive and add the DLL as a reference to the compiler? Is the distribution of the resulting bytecode legal?

    I rewrote some parts of Mercurial (which is licensed under GNU GPL v2) in C#. Naturally, I looked a lot into original Python code and some parts are direct translations from Python to C#. Is is possible have "my code" licensed under different terms or to even make a part of a closed-source commercial application? If not, can I re-license "my-code" under LGPL, open-source it and then use this open-sourced C# library in my closed-source commercial application?

Can I modify the looks of the image in the program as long as I don't change anything in the file that contains the icon?     Im automating my mac installation using 'puppet'. as a part of it I need to install several programs that come in a .dmg format. I use the following to mount them: sudo /usr/bin/hdiutil mount -plist -nobrowse -readonly -quiet -mountrandom /tmp Program.dmg The problem is that some .dmg files come with a license attached, and so script is stuck accepting the license. (there is no stdin/out when running with puppet, so I can't manually approve it to continue). Is there a way to pre-approve or force-approve the license?
