sizes of RAM, of virtual memory and of swap for 32-bit OS

If I understand correctly, a 32-bit OS (Ubuntu) can only address 4GiB memory, so RAM with size larger than 4Gib will only be used 4Gib of itself and the rest is a waste. I am now confused about this situation for RAM with similar one for virtual memory and for swap. with virtual memory being swap + RAM, if the size of the virtual memory exceeds 4Gib, will the exceeding part be a waste for the 32-bit OS? if I now have to choose the size for my swap partition, is it a factor to consider that the 32-bit OS can only address 4GiB memory? Does the size of swap have to be chosen with respect to the 4Gib addressible limitation? Will the swap exceeding 4GiB always be a waste? is virtual memory equal to RAM and swap? or can virtual memory use space on the hard drive outside the swap partition? Thanks and regards!

The last time I saw a BSOD (Blue screen of death) was when Windows 7 tried to sleep in Parallels 3 which hadn't implemented ACPI for windows 7. Apart from that I can't recall the last time I had a blue screen. Has driver signing finally stopped frequent kernel panics?

I share my VIM configuration file between several computers. However, I want some settings to be specific for certain computers. For example, font sizes on the high-res laptop should be different to the low-res desktop. And more importantly, I want gVIM on Windows to behave more windowsy and MacVim on OSX to behave more maccy and gVIM on Linux to just behave like it always does. (That might be a strange sentiment, but I am very used to switch mental modes when switching OSes) Is there a way to make a few settings in the .vimrc machine- or OS-dependent?

Hello, I looked a bit but didn't see any duplicate of this so my question is which free(open source) OS do you use on servers and why do you use that OS? Background I have a VPS at Linode. There is a broad range of options for which OS I can put on it including both 32 and 64bit OSs. I just use it to run my small blog and for hosting random files. It's very low traffic. I have been using 64bit Arch Linux on my VPS and though I love the OS for general usage, for a server the constant breakage is troublesome. So I'm considering trying something new and am looking for suggestions.

I'm using windows 7, Now I need to install Ubuntu 11.04 to the my lap top, I want keep win7 in my lap, I'm planing to keep dual boot system on my lap, I want to install Ubuntu on separate partition, I have deleted my windows empty partition to allocate the space to Ubuntu but when I'm proceeding with installation in Ubuntu, I couldn't recognize the empty partition, Ubuntu shows my full hard disk space one 50GB partition to install, I couldn't recognize the 50GB partition, can anyone tell me how to install Ubuntu on my lap. What does an ACPI BIOS configure during boot?

When a PC boots with an ACPI BIOS, what does it exactly do? I understand that the point of ACPI is to allow the OS to control hardware resources and power management but before the OS is loaded does ACPI configure just the devices needed to boot and then let the OS configure the rest? If the OS wants to re-asign hardware resources does it store this information in the ACPI tables so that the next time the system is booted it assigns them how the OS wants? The ACPI driver asks the PCI bus driver (Pci.sys) to enumerate devices on it's bus once the OS is loaded, how are these devices configured whilst the PC is booting when it doesn't have other bus drivers? Any help with any of the above questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What I wanna know is, is there any way to save (or maybe sync with Windows Live account) installed app list, and install these saved applications in future - RTM version of OS? I mean, somehing like on Apples' devices - icloud features function that I'm talking about. You can install apps on iPhone and sync with iCloud account. Then you can re-install these apps on another device, which signed in with your login into icloud.

recommendations for a lightweight linux distribution for a test server

I'm planning on setting up a test server to experiment with some application servers (tomcat/jboss/...) and with some portals. Now the machine I've set aside for this is lightweight CPU/GPU wise(Atom D510, 4 gigabyte ram, 500 GiB hdd, onboard GPU). But it should suffice for most things, I'm more interested in the stability of JBoss/Tomcat for my purposes than the stability. However I'm having a bit of trouble picking an appropriate distribution size/performance/setup time wise/security wise since it seems I can't sneeze without another distribution popping up. I've been thinking about going for Fedora since I've read that that distribution has been optimized for Atom, but I'm not really familiar with it. My experience with Linux has mostly been limited to Ubuntu and some tinkering with puppylinux. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty using the command line. I'm not planning on starting a discussion per se, mostly the pros/cons that people have encountered with some distributions

What should I encrypt in Debian during install?

I have seen various guides and recommendations on web about how best to do this but nothing that clearly explains the best way and why. So I understand there is a need for part of Debian during install to be un-encrypted on its own partition to allow it to boot. Most info I have seen is call this /boot and set the boot flag. Next I believe the best approach is to create another partition out of all the rest of the disk space, encrypt this, then on top of that create a LVM and then within the LVM create my various partitions , name them , select size, and file system type. Can I include /swap in the encrypted LVM part ? Is this approach sound? If so what are the partitions I should use (this is going to be a minimal server install with a view to install as and when what I need for a dev server)? Finally how does the installer know what to put in each partition I define ? I appreciate there are more than one question but any help and suggestions would be appreciated. Do I need more RAM for programming if I switch to a 64 Bit OS?

Hi, Given that today (for performance reasons?) variables are usually aligned to the "bit-width" (I wanted to use "word-width" here, but on x86 a "word" is still 16 bits right?) of the processor, would switching from a 32 bit OS to its 64 bit version double the RAM usage? Would this then in turn mean that to do the same work a 32 bit OS can do with 4 GB RAM (well, the 3.x GB actually...) with a 64 bit OS I would need 8 GB of RAM for programming? Please note that I'm only talking about everyday x86 computers here.

C drive should only contain OS. Myth or fact?

So, I have a 500GB HDD @7200RPM. It is split as: C: 97GB D: 179GB E: 188GB My belief is to keep OS ONLY in C:\ and any adamant programs that won't go anywhere apart from C:\ [because this speeds up the PC during startup process] and install programs in D:\ so that in case I have to reinstall the OS, I will have the programs readily available after reinstall. But I have begun to think this approach is flawed because if C:\ is formatted, I will lose registry values and stuff that goes in %appdata% and so it is no use keeping programs in D:/ drive because they will be useless after all. Should I go ahead and install ALL of my programs in C:\ and then use D:\ and E:\ for storing my data like photos, text files, java files n all? How will this impact the performance of the HDD? I only have 3 programs in D:\Program Files so it will be easy to reinstall them :)

Related to my older question: Get xp product key from boot Thanks for the help on that one. So, in the end, i couldn't get into my harddrive because i didn't have the available hardware to hook it up to another computer to get the old activation key. So, instead, i entered another activation key (i know, naughty) in hopes that there would be a way to retrieve the old one, restore point or something afterwords. What legal ways can I get xp re-activated after a repair when I don't have any record of my activation key? for those who think im just trying to crack it, your wrong: Got a virus, which stopped me from getting into windows Got AVG Anti Virus, which stopped me from getting into safe mode Got a 2 year old, who decided to rip-off and chew my activation sticker on my computer (nice one). Repaired windows installation thinking i wouldn't be asked to re-enter the activation key, to find that i was.

DOS application to allow remote management of files over serial link

Harken back to the days of DOS. I have an embedded DOS handheld device, and I'm looking for a tool to manage the files stored on it. I picture an application I can launch on the device that opens COM1 up for commands to get a directory listing, send/receive files via x/y/zmodem, move/delete files, and create/move/delete directories. A Windows application can then download a recursive file listing and then manage those files (for example, synchronizing with a local directory). Keep in mind that this is DOS -- 8.3 filenames, 640K of RAM and a 19200bps serial link (yuk!). I'd prefer something with source in case we need to add additional features (for example, the ability to get a checksum of a file for change detection). Now that I've written this description, I realize I'm asking for something like LapLink or pcAnywhere. Norton no longer sells DOS versions of pcAnywhere and LapLink V for DOS seems pricy at $50. Are you aware of any similar apps from those good old days?

Windows XP freezes completely

Lately my Win XP SP3 started to make problems. From time to time it freezes completely. Which means that the system does not react to mouse and keyboard. Keyboard led indicators also do not react to CAPS-, SCROLL-, NUM- LOCK keys. The problem is that I don't understand what causes this behavior and it seems to happen randomly. System event log also does not contain any clues. I'm thinking this could be some driver/hardware problem, but I don't know which. Are there any tools that would help me figure out the cause of this problem? Does anybody have any clue how can I fix this?

Redirecting or routing all traffic to OpenVPN on a Mac OS X client

I have configured an OpenVPN (2.2.1) server on an Ubuntu virtual machine in the Amazon elastic compute cloud. The server is up and running. I have installed OpenVPN (2.2.1) on a Mac OS X (10.8.2) client and I am using the openvpn2 binary to connect (in opposition to other clients like Tunnelblick or Viscosity). I can connect with the client and successfully ping or ssh the server through the tunnel. However, I can't redirect all internet traffic through the VPN even if I use the push "redirect-gateway def1 bypass-dhcp" option in the server.conf configurations. When I connect to the server with these configurations, I get a successful connection, but then an infinite series of error messages: "write UDPv4: No route to host (code=65)". Traffic routing seems to be compromised because I am not able to access anything anymore, not even the OpenVPN server (by pinging 10.8.0.1 for instance). This is beyond me. I am finding little help on the web and don't know what to try next. I don't think it is a problem of forwarding the traffic on the server since, first, I have also took care of that and, second, I can't even ping the VPN server locally through the tunnel (or ping anything at all for that matter). What does it mean to install two OS's alongside each other?

I currently have Windows 7 installed on my PC. However, I just tried out Ubuntu via booting from a disc and I love it. I want to install it onto my HDD, but I don't want to get rid of Windows 7. I know HOW to do this, but I am a little unsure what the consequences might be. What does it mean to install Ubuntu alongside Windows? Do they share the same resources? Also, I have my HDD already partitioned into two sections, a 70 GB section where Windows is installed and then another 400 GB section where all my data is stored. There is currently 26 GB free on the 70GB partition. I know Ubuntu doesn't take up much space. However, if I install Ubuntu in that space, will I still be able to install programs on Windows in the future? My main concern is that I am going to short-change my hard drive space for future installations. EDIT: I guess another big question I have is if I install a program on one OS, will the other be able to use it?

My ever-growing interest in computers is making me ask deeper questions, that we don't seem to have to ask anymore. Our computers, at boot, as far as I understand it, are in text mode, in which a character can be displayed using the software interrupt 0x10 when AH=0x0e. We've all seen the famous booting font that always looks the same, regardless of what computer is booting. So, how on earth do computers output graphics at the lowest level, say, below the OS? And also, surely graphics aren't outputted a pixel at a time using software interrupts, as that sounds very slow? Is there a standard that defines basic outputting of vertices, polygons, fonts, etc. (below OpenGL for example, which OpenGL might use)? What makes me ask is why OS' can often be fine without official drivers installed; how do they do that? Apologies if my assumptions are incorrect. I would be very grateful for elaboration on these topics!

How to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux on Apple Macbook Pro MacBookPro4,1

I have a one year old Mac Book Pro that I am trying to get RHEL 5.4 installed on via bootcamp. No matter what I do I can't get the installer to boot. I have tried multiple DVD's and even verified the install works on a new Mac Book Pro. Most of the time the installer simply locks up. I usually use Linux text with all-generic-ide on the boot line. I removed the ide parameter and I just used linux text. The results I get are that a bunch of kernel messages appear then the background turns blue and a thin text box pops up saying its loading ata..... something it disappears too fast for me to read. Then the machine freezes. I pressed the alt function keys to see if I could look at the system log, here is what it says: Alt-f3 says "trying to mount CD device hda" Alt-f4 says status error: hda: lastFailedSense Hda: Failed opcode was: unknown Hda: Lost interrupt Hda: Drive not ready for command Ide-cd: command 0x3 timed out Above this junk it looks like it found the partition because it knew it was 20 GB and listed as /dev/sda3. I think it has something to do with the CD drive, is that possible? Thanks again for the support. PS I posted in the apple support forums ( Apple.com Support Discussions Boot Camp Installation and Storage) and didn't get an answer.

VFS and FS i-node difference

What is the difference between VFS i-node and FS (e.g. EXT) i-node? Is it possible that EXT i-node is persistent (contains/points to data blocks), but VFS i-node is created just in i-node cache after read/use of EXT i-node? Or the VFS i-node is just an image of FS i-node (it's the same) and i-nodes in those systems, which are not working with i-nodes (e.g. FAT, NTFS) has to be emulated (HOW?) to allow VFS work with those FS like they would support i-nodes?

Windows 8 RP: Sync Apps' list

I'm testing windows 8 RP. Installed tens of apps from market. What I wanna know is, is there any way to save (or maybe sync with windows live account) installed app list, and install these saved applications in future - RTM version of OS? I mean, somehing like on Apples' devices - icloud features function that I'm talking about. You can install apps on iPhone and sync with iCloud account. Then you can re-install these apps on another device, which signed in with your login into icloud.

DosBox Booting From HDD Image, FreeDOS Image created with qemu-img.

I'm having trouble booting a HDD image with DosBox. I've only gotten either read errors, or boot failures. The HDD image is a verified working FreeDOS installation, created with qemu-img. The image has been formatted FAT32, and it's working as expected with QEMU. The Image is only 1G in size, and is a flat raw image. I have been able to mount it with Linux, for ease of file transfer. I even was able to boot with DOSEMU, After I mounted the image under Linux. I would love to somehow just boot from the raw image file, but I would have no problem booting from a mount. I just can't get anything to happen, and I have read the Documents over. I have verified DosBox is working as expected, with its included DOSlike environment. I would appreciate any help, as I just don't have much of DosBox experience.

Toshiba recovery disc doesn't give me all partition options

I'm trying to install Windows XP on a new machine, by way of the original Toshiba XP recovery disc. (I can use a recovery disc on not-the-original machine can't I?) When I boot up with the disc in, I get to a point when it asks me how I want to install. I select the 'existing partition' option. It then gives me a dialog saying it will install into the SYSTEM partition, which is tiny. Obviously I don't want to overwrite SYSTEM, so how can I install XP on one of my empty partitions (already created)? I know it's possible to install the OS from the CD on a separate machine (just tried in a virtual one). Maybe I can move the partitions around if it just selects the first one?

Multiple Screens, Multiple OS

Hey, Around two days ago I saw someone working on a computer and alt-tabing to different OSs. Basically he had 3 "screens", one with Fedora, one with Windows XP, one with Mac OSX. How is that possible? I dont think it was a virtual machine.... sounds friggin awesome though.
