• Can't customize the application switcher

  I'm trying to change the shortcut for switching applications from Alt+Tab to Ctrl+Tab, but changes in the System Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Navigation are being ignored. Even if I disable the Switch applications shortcut entirely, it still maps to Alt+Tab. At one point I had some keys remapped with xmodmap, but since then I have deleted that configuration and rebooted. My keyboard layout settings are all defaults. The OS is Ubuntu 12.04, with all software updated this afternoon. It would also be nice to have the variation of application switching that includes one icon per window, instead of one icon per application, since I am frequently switching between windows of an application and would rather not wait for the switcher to realize I want a different window of the current application. My other Ubuntu 12.04 install has the application switcher that I like, but I'm not sure how to choose between them on this install (which was set up by my university department). Thanks if anyone can help me with this.

  I've recently become responsible for choosing which source control and project management software to use for a company that employs me. Currently it uses Jira (project management) and Subversion (version control). I know there are many other options out there -- the ones I know about are all in this article http://mashable.com/2010/07/14/distributed-developer-teams/ . I'm leaning towards recommending they just stay with what they have as it seems workable and any change would have to be worth the cost of switching to say github/basecamp or some other solution. Some details on the team: It's a distributed development shop. Meetings of the whole team in one room are rare. It's currently a very small development team (three developers). The project management software is used by developers and a product manager or two. What are you experiences with version control and project management web applications? Are there any you would recommend and you think are worth the switching cost of time to learn new services / implementing the change? Edit: After educating myself further on the options it appears DVCS offer powerful benefits that may be worth investing in now as opposed to later in the company's lifetime when the switching cost is higher: I'm a Subversion geek, why I should consider or not consider Mercurial or Git or any other DVCS?

• xubuntu 12.04 screen regularly stops refreshing, refreshing resumes after un-/re-maximizing a window

  My screen frequently stops completely refreshing. I can make it resume refreshing by un-maximizing/re-maximize a window or by switching workspace (the un-/re-maximizing works every time. Switching workspace sometimes has to be done a couple of times). The immediate impression is that the system is frozen: there is apparently no reaction to anything I do but interestingly window title bar will change, if I switch application with (i.e alt+tab or browse through folders) I saw an identical issue in ubuntu 10.04, though a lot less frequent, I never saw this in ubuntu 12.04 (which I have been using the last 4-5 months). After switching to Xubuntu I'm seeing this again and more frequently. The specific reason I'm not sure this is a bug: I installed gnome-control-center which dragged in tons of packages. This was while trying to fix dual-screen setup. I believe the issue surfaced after this. I later meticulously removed every package from this batch (purge) in the hope that every setting would also be removed. But the issue has persisted. Another issue happened at the same time, it may be totally unrelated but it feels as if it is the same basic issue: the screen resolution of the greeter became less than the expected 1680x1050 and often after login there's just a blank and totally unresponsive wallpaper without panel so I have to force reboot. When the login is successful it's very clear that it works hard to determine the correct resolution which is achieved after a few blink to black screens. My questions: 1) Is this a settings issue or a bug? 2) How do I begin to research the issue - could I perhaps some way reset xubuntu/xfce to default. 3) If this is a bug where would be the most appropriate place report this? • Two Hidden NetBeans Keyboard Shortcuts for Opening & Toggling between Views

  The following are two really basic shortcuts for working with NetBeans editor windows that will be added to the Keyboard Shortcuts card for NetBeans IDE 7.2: Ctrl-Alt-PgUp/PgDown: Shortcuts for switching between editor types (e.g. Source, Design, History buttons). Switching between the editor types is a frequent operation sometimes, e.g., when using GUI builder, and while it can be done easily via mouse, or from View | Editors menu, it is very handy to know the shortcuts as well. Ctrl-PgUp/PgDown: Similarly, these are shortcuts for switching to next/previous opened document (tab). Note this is not like Ctrl-Tab that cycles in the last used order, but going through the tabs as they appear in the editor. Both shortcuts should fit into the "Opening and Toggling between Views" section. These are important to mention on the card because they are not visible anywhere else in the UI (as there are no menu items like "Go to next/previous editor type" or "Go to next/previous document"). • Sd card bigger than 2gb is not recognized in ubuntu 12.04

  When I insert a card up to 2gb it is immediately seen by the system but if try it with bigger one it's not seen. I presume the issue is not due to the card reader itself as it reads all cards under windows 7 but due to linux driver. I could see some people having similar issues but no solution. Any help appreciated. GParted doesnt see cards bigger than 2gb. • Clearing canvas with Canvas.drawColor()

  I'm attempting to change the background image of a custom View with some success. The image will change but the problem is that I still see traces of the old image. When I attempt to clear the canvas before drawing the new image, it doesn't appear to work. I create a bitmap to store the image. When changing the image, I call Canvas.drawColor() before drawing the new image but the old image persists. I've tried drawColor(0), drawColor(Color.BLACK), c.drawColor(0, PorterDuff.Mode.CLEAR), and none of the above works. As such, I had to post this for review from more experienced minds than mine. Win+P is not good enough, as it loops between four choices: Computer | Duplicate | Extend | Projector, and I want to toggle only between two monitors.   We need to perform some tasks when switching from one Subversion branch to another using TortoiseSVN. Is there any way to, say, call a batch file before and after the switch? The only thing I can find are pre-/post-update and commit hooks, but none of those get executed when switching between branches. EDIT: I am looking for client-side hooks. TortoiseSVN has client-side hook scripts for pre-/post-update and commit, but nothing (that I can find) for pre-/post-switch. Initially, I thought adding hooks for client-side pre-/post-update would be executed when switching between branches, but this does not seem to be the case.

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 64bit on MacBook Pro 15" 2010 (MacBookPro6,2) and I would like to use the integrated Intel graphics instead of the dedicated Nvidia graphics Ubuntu boots with on this machine. I am booting with UEFI, not REFIT or similar. I managed to switch to UEFI with the help of this page. This wiki page also contains tips on switching to Intel graphics which include some (for me) cryptic boot commands to grub. However if I follow the guide, my display stays just black. Currently, I am only looking for solution to use Intel graphics for Ubuntu to save power and keep my MacBook cool. Dynamic switching or stuff like that is not required.

• Connection Pooling is Busted

  A few weeks ago we started getting complaints about performance in an application that has performed very well for many years.  The application is a n-tier application that uses ADODB with the SQLOLEDB provider to talk to a SQL Server database.  Our object model is written in such a way that each public method validates security before performing requested actions, so there is a significant number of queries executed to get information about file cabinets, retrieve images, create workflows, etc.  (PaperWise is a document management and workflow system.)  A common factor for these customers is that they have remote offices connected via MPLS networks. Naturally, the first thing we looked at was the query performance in SQL Profiler.  All of the queries were executing within expected timeframes, most of them were so fast that the duration in SQL Profiler was zero.  After getting nowhere with SQL Profiler, the situation was escalated to me.  I decided to take a peek with Process Monitor.  Procmon revealed some “gaps” in the TCP/IP traffic.  There were notable delays between send and receive pairs.  The send and receive pairs themselves were quite snappy, but quite often there was a notable delay between a receive and the next send.  You might expect some delay because, presumably, the application is doing some thinking in-between the pairs.  But, comparing the procmon data at the remote locations with the procmon data for workstations on the local network showed that the remote workstations were significantly delayed.  Procmon also showed a high number of disconnects. Wireshark traces showed that connections to the database were taking between 75ms and 150ms.  Not only that, but connections to a file share containing images were taking 2 seconds!  So, I asked about a trust.  Sure enough there was a trust between two domains and the file share was on the second domain.  Joining a remote workstation to the domain hosting the share containing images alleviated the time delay in accessing the file share.  Removing the trust had no affect on the connections to the database. Microsoft Network Monitor includes filters that parse TDS packets.  TDS is the protocol that SQL Server uses to communicate.  There is a certificate exchange and some SSL that occurs during authentication.  All of this was evident in the network traffic.  After staring at the network traffic for a while, and examining packets, I decided to call it a night.  On the way home that night, something about the traffic kept nagging at me.  Then it dawned on me…at the beginning of the dance of packets between the client and the server all was well.  Connection pooling was working and I could see multiple queries getting executed on the same connection and ethereal port.  After a particular query, connecting to two different servers, I noticed that ADODB and SQLOLEDB started making repeated connections to the database on different ethereal ports.  SQL Server would execute a single query and respond on a port, then open a new port and execute the next query.  Connection pooling appeared to be broken. The next morning I wrote a test to confirm my hypothesis.  Turns out that the sequence causing the connection nastiness goes something like this: Make a connection to the database. Open a result set that returns enough records to require multiple roundtrips to the server. For each result, query for some other data in the database (this will open a new implicit connection.) Close the inner result set and repeat for every item in the original result set. Close the original connection. Provided that the first result set returns enough data to require multiple roundtrips to the server, ADODB and SQLOLEDB will start making new connections to the database for each query executed in the loop.  Originally, I thought this might be due to Microsoft’s denial of service (ddos) attack protection.  After turning those features off to no avail, I eventually thought to switch my queries to client-side cursors instead of server-side cursors.  Server-side cursors are the default, by the way.  Voila!  After switching to client-side cursors, the disconnects were gone and the above sequence yielded two connections as expected. While the real problem is the amount of time it takes to make connections over these MPLS networks (100ms on average), switching to client-side cursors made the problem go away.  Believe it or not, this is actually documented by Microsoft, and rather difficult to find.  (At least it was while we were trying to troubleshoot the problem!)  So, if you’re noticing performance issues on slower networks, or networks with slower switching, take a look at the traffic in a tool like Microsoft Network Monitor.  If you notice a high number of disconnects, and you’re using fire-hose or server-side cursors, then try switching to client-side cursors and you may see the problem go away. Most likely, Microsoft believes this to be appropriate behavior, because ADODB can’t guarantee that all of the data has been retrieved when you execute the inner queries.  I’m not convinced, though, because the problem remains even after replacing all of the implicit connections with explicit connections and closing those connections in-between each of the inner queries.  In that case, there doesn’t seem to be a reason why ADODB can’t use a single connection from the connection pool to make the additional queries, bringing the total number of connections to two.  Instead ADO appears to make an assumption about the state of the connection. I’ve reported the behavior to Microsoft and am awaiting to hear from the appropriate team, so that I can demonstrate the problem.  Maybe they can explain to us why this is appropriate behavior.  :)

I would like to learn about the best way to decide trailer length, structure, music/sound, and content.   Hi I am switching constantly between browsers (three different at the moment). So i was also switching default browsers to open my mail / new links etc... I also saw that with the command sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser the browsers have different priorities. So I had the idea that it could be possible that the default browser could be the browser/s that is/are actually open and running! And if two are running, the one with higher priority is chosen. • Ubuntu 13.10 japanese keyboard layout intercepts Caps Lock

  I've installed Ubuntu 13.10 (clean install on new machine), there are lot of changes for configuring keyboard layouts and I've tried to configure it as I've used earlier: Englis (US), Russian and Japanese (Anthy) with switching between them with Caps Lock key. (See screenshot) Caps Lock switching works fine between Russian and English and vice-versa, but with Japanese I can switch only TO Japanese (not FROM), in Japanese layout Caps Lock starting to work as usual Caps Lock (as a switch between small and BIG letters), so I need to use mouse to switch back to Ru or En layout. This happens ONLY with Japanese layouts (I've tried also simply "Japanese" and "Japanese (Kana)"), not with Chinese, Korean or anything else. I'm not sure who is blame for that, is it ibus-anthy or anything. Please help, I want to use Caps Lock to switch between all layouts.   Hello i just started using Ubuntu the other day i never used Linux or anything else besides windows before. I started learning HTML on windows 7 before switching to Ubuntu and know my HTML images are not working even after i made new images on Ubuntu and put the correct path and made sure the images are .png. After all that the site does not load the new images and the coeds are just fine i put my HTML files on cloud storage before switching to Ubuntu so its not the codes. Also i am using Mozilla Fire Fox.

• What tasks should an Architect NOT do or limit to be effective?

  There are plenty of questions/answers about what an architect does, but what should someone in an Architect role NOT do? What are the boundaries/limits to maintain to be an effective Architect? I'm thinking here of Architect vs Developer and Architect vs Project Manager For example, I'm finding myself in a role where my title is Architect but I am also the coding/development lead and project manager on multiple small enterprise projects. I'm struggling with all the task switching and now I want to limit task switching. Trying to wear every hat just isn't working. What tasks should an Architect not do at all? What tasks should an Architect limit? I do think an Architect needs to keep coding, but how to define an appropriate limit for coding work?

• is bumblebee supposed to be a "seamless" implementation?

  It is said that bumblebee is used to make Nvidia Optimus work on linux. The wikipedia Optimus description says that The switching is designed to be completely seamless and to happen "behind the scenes". However, after installing bumblebee, the recommended test seems to be to compare the operation of glxspheres with the operation of optirun glxspheres. The latter is faster than the former. If the switching is supposed to be seamless, why do we optirun to speed up graphics? Shouldn't it be automatic?

• Can't boot Ubuntu 12.10 graphics problem

  I can't boot since installing Ubuntu 12.10 When I try to run Ubuntu My computer never gets to the Ubuntu screen with the loading dots. I tried to run in recovery mode with safe graphics (failsafex) When I do this a message pops up saying "the system is running in low graphics mode", If I click okay I am asked what would I like to do and am given four options. I tried running low graphics for one session and then a message appears with a progress bar and says standby one minute while the display restarts. The progress bar never moves and if I click okay the whole process just restarts. I Don't know what to do from here I can't get into the OS. I'm not sure whether the problem is related to compatibility with my laptop monitor or my graphic card nvidia360m I had to install using a safe graphics mode. Can't install Ubuntu since 10.10 ----UPDATE--- I was able to get into a desktop environment By installing Nvidia-current however it is messy. I have a screen and I am able to see my desktop however there is no unity bar and none of the keyboard controls work. I can right click and create a folder on the desktop and then I can see inside that folder in a traditional browser window. There is still no top menu or unity bar. When I boot normally I don't get into the desktop environment and I get this message in tty 'GPU lockup switching to software FBCON' Okay, I've played around with tips the pages from comments. I've been able to consistantly get into a safemode desktop environment using the xorg & nouveau drivers. I've tried switching between the 5 different options in the Additional Drivers tab in Software Sources. The nVidia (proprietary, tested) driver gets beyond the GPU lockup on a normal boot and actually gets into a Desktop. The issue is then that there is no Unity bar, or top screen menu bar and the resolution is very low. I've tried switching to the (prop, tested) driver and then reinstalling Unity and Ubuntu-Desktop but that didn't work either.

• programs becoming unresponsive

  I have changed from Mint 13 to Ubuntu, complete fresh install. However I regularly get programs becoming unresponsive seems to be more after when switching between screens or work places. eg before i was using firefox have 2 pop up screens(no junk ones) bank login and an ebay chat, switching between them and then firefox faded to grey and I had to force close as it become unresponsive. Ubuntu is very nice to use, but I never had these problems using mint 13. Is this common, are there any fixes coming??

• CPU spikes cause audio stuttering in Audacious when browsing? (Lubuntu)

  My default audio player is Audacious, browser Google Chrome. I tried Firefox, and while I love it, the CPU load spikes when doing something as simple and small and switching a tab, which causes the audio playing to stutter (as sound is onboard and handled thru the CPU). Chrome doesn't do this as much, but there is the occasional stuttering when browsing, which is ridiculous, as not even Windows Vista does this. So I thought maybe it's something to do with how Lubuntu handles sound, I checked and only ALSA was installed. I tried installing PulseAudio, but, while the music "plays", nothing comes through the speakers. Immediately after switching back to ALSA the music pours out of them. So I was wondering if you had any idea what was going on here. I asked on Ubuntu Forums but apparently my problem is too complex, as it's been over a week since the last reply. Specs are: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ @ 2GHz 2GB Corsair 667MHz DDR2 RAM ATi HD Radeon 3650 (AGP) 512MB 500W Cooler Master PSU 80GB SATA II HDD (Vista is installed on 500GB drive) Biostar K8M800 Motherboard

• ubuntu 12.04 sound not working in applications

  I run Ubuntu on a DELL Vostro 3500 laptop. Everything was working perfectly since this morning, after an update... I can't play any multimedia sound anymore, that includes youtube and others, mp3 in Rythmbox, sound of video in VLC. I can see my device in the setting window and I can play tests sound, but nothing else. Any idea? EDIT: I'm switching very often from to HDMI output, which is deconnected right now. I've tried running VLC, and in the audio menu, you can choose the output so now I can listen to music via VLC but not with other programs. Looks like ubuntu is not totally switching the audio device after unplugging the HDMI cable. Is there any command line which can do so?

Try again" The OS X client tries to pre-authenticate (all this so far is over UDP) Something gets lost on our network and the KDC says, "Oops something went wrong" The OS X client switches to TCP and tries again. Over TCP, the KDC says, "You're using an encryption type I don't support" Note that in its padata records, the OS X client is always using "aes256-cts-hmac-sha1-96" as its encryption type. However, in its KDC_REQ_BODY record it lists the aes256-cts-hmac-sha1-96, aes128-cts-hmac-sha1-96, des3-cbc-sha1, and rc4-hmac encryption types. When the KDC comes back with KDC_ERR_ETYPE_NOSUPP, it uses rc4-hmac as its encryption type in its padata record. I know next to nothing about Kerberos, but it seems to me that the OS X client should go ahead and try the rc4-hmac encryption type. However, it does nothing after this. Adding record 'cn=spike,CN=Computers,DC=domain,DC=com' in 'domain.com' The failure point seems to be Computer account either already exists or DC is already Read/Write, however, I can search for 'spike' on the Active Directory server using Active Directory Explorer and it's not there. If I do the same search for the Linux and Windows PCs I added previously, I can find them.

• KVM recommendations

  I recently tried out a cheaper KVM solution, a dual monitor one with a USB hub and audio/mic support. It seemed the perfect KVM. However, these are my experiences. When using my keyboard via the PS/2 connection, none of my multimedia keys work (useful, because it has a volume control and my speakers do not, only on a wireless remote control.) I plugged the keyboard in via the USB port - and it seemed to work. However, I believe to switch the hub from PC to Mac, you need to use a keyboard combo, which is only supported when the keyboard is plugged in via PS/2 Sometimes the middle mouse button doesn't work when connected via PS/2. The multi monitor is VGA - I just found out by the looks of things my Mac Mini outputs DVI Digital only (though this is my fault!). Mac works with 2 screens, but switching and switching back can cause it not to display on the 2nd screen unless I go detect displays again. My question is - is there a KVM out there that supports these features? USB keyboard and mouse inputs will full multimedia keys support Dual monitor DVI connections Hotkey to change PCs and physical button USB hub Emulate screens attached when switching to a different computer Works with PC and Mac Audio / Microphone support Does one exist, that won't cost the world? So far the only one that seems to support all this (that I can tell) is this one. UPDATE I ended up buying the Aten CS1642. It's expensive, but it seems to work great!
