• Variable names for Contact Information bits

  I am in the middle of refactoring code and would like to get some ideas on variable naming so that my new names clearly represent the data they hold. I have a class called ContactMethod which makes sense to me; each instance is a different way to contact someone. My problem comes when naming the properties of ContactMethod. For example, one instance might be a Fax number of 555-555-5555 while another could be an Email address of [email protected]; I've got a property called contactMethodType to hold the values "fax" or "email", but I don't know what to call the "555-555-5555" or "[email protected]" part. Has anyone here created a good generic name for this piece of contact information? (PS - the old convention was to call it a "Phone" with fields "phoneType" holding the "fax"/"email" value and "phoneId" holding the number/address. Yuck.)

• Using Copyrighted Images

  I was thinking about developing a sidescrolling platformer very similar to an old Mario and Luigi game for NES. To start out I was thinking about taking the images from a site like this: http://www.mariouniverse.com/sprites/nes/smb3 Which clearly states a copyright. I was wondering how far I am allowed to take these images. I figure I'm probably allowed to use it for personal development, but what if I publish the game as an exe file and send it to some friends? I figured a definite no-no would be selling the game with the copyrighted images included. A secondary question would be whether or not I would be allowed to modify them slightly and then call them my own.

• What is the mentally retirement age as a programmer? [closed]

  Here in my city, computer science is still a relatively "young" degree started at most 20-30 years ago. So most of the "senior programmers" here are at most 40 years old. I have friends in London in their mid 40s are earning decent salaries by working for investment banks on various financial products. Some of them don't want to get "promoted" as project managers because they still have the passion in coding and they are probably making more money by coding. However, when you get older, you might loss creativity and might not unable to pick up new languages or frameworsk as fast as those who are decades younger than us. For those who are unwilling or unable to be migrated to be project managers. What should be the mentally retirement age?

• How to fix indicator icons from being cut off?

  A friend of mine just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and the icons for the indicator applets all appear cut off on both the bottom and the top. See picture above. Note that the icons in the old systray/notification area on my friend's panel all still display correctly, so it's a problem with indicator clearly. My question: How can this be fixed? (I have a 10.04 system that I did a fresh install on, and I don't have this issue, so I'm guessing it's an issue with upgrading. Thanks.

• Using git (or any version control) regarding migration from one language to another [on hold]

  I'm polishing an old project that i released some years ago, and the main purpose on that, is to arrange some folder structures and port the entire code from actionscript to haxe. All the game features, assets and design will remain the same. I have some doubts regarding versioning the project in this circumstance. Assuming that the only thing that will be drastically changed is the code migration, is it correct maintaining the new project changes on the same repository ? I was thinking in tagging it something like V1.1 or Branch the entire project. But i'm afraid that i'm gonna deviate from the versioning patterns. How can i use this version control issue in the best practice way ? Thanks.

  My site is getting a lot of traffic from an image (a company logo image) because this image is ranked 1st in Google search results for a company's title. (I have no idea how that happened.) This image is must for my website, but it is not relevant to the site content, so irrelevant people search for the image and find out about my site. I get interesting statistics: Pros: Total Visits & Avg. New Visits Cons: Avg. Page/Visit, Avg. Visit Duration, Bounce Rate I am confused if this image is helpful to my website. • How to upgrade to R 3.0.1 in Raring Ringtail?

  I need to install the new version of R to get around the 2^31 object size limit. Its not clear how to do so. I see that there is a user-contributed PPA here. But I'm not sure exactly how to install it -- I would add the PPA, then do sudo apt-get install R-base? Do I need to manually remove the old version? How do I make sure that the new version of R plays well with Rgedit, which I use as an editor? I see many packages built for the PPA, but I don't see ALL of them, and in particular it is missing many that I use. Can I upgrade without creating problems along the lines of the worries described above? How do I do it?

• How well supported is the ATI graphics on a Sony VAIO SA?

  This is the first time i will be buying a laptop/desktop to use as a Ubuntu platform with ATI. Now i did notice a while back that ATI drivers were not in cahoots with Linux as of yet. I am just wondering if any one is still experiencing ATI issues, or this is no longer the case. I am looking to spend money on a laptop Upgrade, but I don't want to spend a screw load of money just to find out I can only use windows and my Graphics driver does not work.   I know some of you have been waiting patiently, so I'm pleased to announce that the JET bundle is now available for download on the Oracle Technology Network. I've migrated most of the content from the old Sun wiki site, and got the download in a single handy location on OTN. Download JET now.  The version available is the current latest, which is 4.9.4. This version contains a number of updates, the most significant of which is the ability to specify slot locations instead of the traditional cXtYdZsN nomenclature. This is pretty useful when trying to Jumpstart multiple servers with SAS2.0 based HBAs, as they will have the WWN embedded in the cXtYdZsN name, and it's pretty difficult to guess what that will be until you've booted the server. • Where does Rails get it's datetime for creating records?

  I have a rails app with a data model called 'jobs' and i'm faced with a critical design choice crossroads. I don't know enough about Rails and it's inner workings to be able to say for sure what I should do despite a complete read of the rails and ruby docs. I want to be able to accurately display the age of a job record in days. So when a customer logs in, they can see that the job they submitted is 'x' days old. Where does a rails app on Heroku get it's time stamps? From Heroku? or the customers system clock? If a customer has a out of date system clock and submits a job, it could really mess up the sorting of their job list, not to mention me the overseer of job records. Any advice out there? EDIT: Just to be clear, i'm not asking how to list jobs by their date, but to which clock does a rails app on Heroku base it's records.

  As a Java developer, I am developing trying to use the clean code rules. But in my team we are facing a concrete problem: We have a business layer offering a service called "createObject", this service makes a lot of operation which can result to problem. E.g: parentObjectDontExist, objectAlreadyExist, dontHaveAuthorizationToCreate, operationFailed... and we want the UI using this service to display different information messages depending which error occurred. In old java dev, we should have create all signed exception type and throw it in createObject. As Clean code says, it is forbidden to use Exception for business logic AND signed exceptions are evil... Why not...But i don't know how to solved this problem and i don't want to use return code. • Remove drive partitions before Installing 12.04?

  I have an old box and want to switch to Ubuntu 12.04. It has two hard drives. The first is a 40 gig disk that runs Windows XP; the other is 80 gigs partitioned into 40, 20, and 20 gigs. I am prepared to abandon Windows altogether and everything stored on the drives. So my question is, do I just install from CD/DVD onto the C drive? Or onto one of the partitions in the other disk first and then uninstall Windows? What will happen to the partitions on the second disk, which I don't particularly see a need for? • Problems after upgrading to 14.04 (only background and pointer after login)

  After upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04 I could log in to my X session (albeit with really low graphics). While trying to fix the graphics, I managed to break the X session. Now, after typing my password in the unity-greeter, the items disappear and I can only see the desktop background and the pointer. This happens for every user. I can still log in in tty's. How can I solve this? Also, I cannot seem to be able to install nvidia-current as it tries to install nvidia-304 and it depends on old video-abi libraries. Is there a way to tell the package manager that nvidia-current should use a newer version?

• Moving a LAMP set up from 32 bit to 64 bit

  Hello everyone... I have setup an Ubuntu server 10.10 32bit on an old Dell D610 Laptop for testing. I have the latest PHP, MySQL and Apache with Wordpress installed. After the testing is over and once I finish adding material to my wordpress I will build a Ubuntu 10.10 64bit VM on Hyper-V. What I am wondering is , if it's best practice to build everything from scratch (which will take me more time and would like to avoid) or transfer the database and all other settings? If I choose to transfer how and what I need to do? Here's where I'd like some help as I am still an intermediate admin (If I can call it that!) I am looking forward for your help. Thanks!

• Problem adding a ppa

  I want to install gcc compiler 4.7 to use c++11 features. I have looked on the internet for instructions, and I found in several websites these steps: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:Ubuntu-toolchain-r/test sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gcc-4.7 g++-4.7 The problem is that my console freezes when adding the ppa. At first I thought it was due to having an old Ubuntu version (11.04). So I have upgraded to 11.10 and then 12.04, and everything seems to work OK. But still having the same problem. Any help?

For example, the logging sybsystem: Option 1: All in one package, named to sort nicely Log - static accessor LogMonitor - interface for log minotor LogMonitorBase - abstract class LogMonitorStdout - print log to console LogWriter - interface for file logger LogWriterSimple - log writer with just one log file LogWriterArchiving - log writer that handles old log files Option 2: Subpackages for Monitors and Writers, with better names Log monitors/LogMonitor monitors/BaseMonitor monitors/StdoutMonitor writers/LogWriter writers/SimpleLog writers/ArchivingLog The second maybe looks better, but perhaps it's not so practical from the java point of view (two extra packages). What do you suggest as the best practice here? A lot in one package, grouped by naming prefixes, or a lot of subpackages with better names?

  How i can buy the contents of the server of archive.ubuntu.com (for lucid lynx)? In my country i have ultra slow connection. It will take years for downloading all these gigabytes. Because, canonical will stop supporting ubuntu 10.04, i want all the files now, before it's too late. i know that all files will be transfer to old.dir but i think some will be lost. And anyway i want the files. My question is: Can canonical provide (with payment) a disk with the contents of the server? Cheers

• Switching to an external display, when primary is broken

  I've successfully install Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop (x86) on an old(er) laptop that unfortunately has a broken screen, so there is an external monitor plugged in. On the livecd it come up on the secondary display just fine and I was able to install ubuntu and everything. Unfortunately when I reboot into Ubuntu proper now, the secondary display is off and I'm literally driving blind here trying to switch it to the secondary display. Using Nvidia open source drivers. Things I've tried: Rebooting back into livecd, mounting the partition and trying in vain to find a config file (it uses the open source drivers so no Xorg.conf I could edit manually) Trying to blind-type xrandr settings into what I hope is terminal: xrandr --output VGA1 --auto (nothing happened) Trying to blind install openssh-server so I could ssh into it and maybe configure it from my working computer. For some reason though, no luck. Ubuntu really should default to expanding to all screens for this use case.

• What do you use to create sprite graphics? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What tools do you use for 2D art/sprite creation? What do you folks suggest for creating sprite graphics and sprite sheets? I fiddle with pixelformer and tilestudio. Pixelfromer has a kicken interface, it is quick and easy to make graphics, but a bit cumbersom if you want to make a spritemap. Tile Studio is a interesting mix or tiles and maps, but it is a bit buggy and basic. The Adobe series, just don't really seem to handle tiny graphics well. (there is a previous posting of this question existing, but it is a year old and I was hoping for further/updated input from the community)

• Why can't I update to 11.04?

  I am using Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit, and I can browse the internet fine. I am typing this using the machine. When I attempt to use the Ubuntu Update Manager to update to 11.04, I get this error message: Failed to Fetch Fetching the upgrade failed.There may be a network problem. And when I try to change servers, here is what I get: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.91.15 80] It repeats with other lines, 404 not found. Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. Any ideas?

• LXDE will not suspend when laptop lid is closed, and will die when woken up

  I am not an experienced Linux user, although I have been using Ubuntu occassionally some time already. ( Since Feisty Fawn probably? ). Now I installed Ubuntu 11.10 and it is nice ( well, after I installed LXDE, Unity sucks and I didn't really like gnome-fallback-session ), but it has one problem: After being suspended, when I wake my computer up, it starts up and in about 5 seconds it dies. Like a normal shutdown. Then, when I start it again, the screen stays blank, so I have to hard-turn it off - only then, when I turn it on, it works. It is an MSI laptop, about 3-4 years old. The second problem is: After installing LXDE, when I close the laptop lid, it does not suspend. I can only suspend using the shutdown menu - and the waking up problem remains. I've tried moving the entire site to the WWW directory, but then all my forms return "The HTTP verb POST used to access path is not allowed". Additionally, all the solutions I've found online only work on a page by page basis. Is there a simpler/faster way to migrate a large website containing many forms to IIS7? Here is the specific error message: The HTTP verb POST used to access path '/FormServer/Mig/_vti_bin/shtml.dll/admissions/askseaaggie.htm' is not allowed.

• Ubuntu on low powered laptop

  First off, I am new to Ubuntu. I come from a Windows background (DOS before that) and am loving it so far. I installed it on an older Dell laptop that I wanted to get another year out of. I set this machine up primarily as a LAMP development machine for a project I am working on. The machine is a Vostro 1500 and it has 4GB RAM (maxed) and an upgraded hard drive. I can't watch YouTube videos for long before it starts to overheat and start acting sporadic. I can live without YouTube but every so often the application switching (alt-tab) gets slower and begins not showing all applications and the Dash home quits displaying properly. I am sure I am asking a lot of this old machine. What I really want to know is: are there any settings in Ubuntu that allow me to lower the graphic effects (fade-ins, transparencies, fancy transitions, etc) that would be less taxing on the video card?

• Why do so many people dislike C++?

  Beginners and professional, on blogs, in forums and chatrooms - people say it everywhere: C++ oh dear god no The short form of the question: For what reason is C++ so widely disliked and people are horrified by the imagination of using it for some project? I have been using a lot of different languages, including C++ by now, and I can only say that I really like it. I'm far more horrified by Delphi than by C++. Actually, I find it's an almost perfect, compiled language! I've been doing a lot of different projects in C++ as well, ranging from 3D video games to webservers and emulators for old video game consoles. And I still do not see the problem everyone else seems to have with it! It was hard for me to get into it of course, as it is quite complex and has a lot of depth, but after that it's simply great.
