• How accurate is header information received?

  Please see What could keep a javascript from loading properly on a page? In the header it shows that it is coming from IIS 6.0. How accurate is this information? Also this vendor (which is the worst I have worked with) made us go through a huge server switch process. Did they "upgrade" to W2003 IIS6.0? What would be the reason for a "new" server to be running this old of a version of IIS? Am I missing something?

  This being my first time going to TechEd and I want to make sure that I get the most out of it.  The first goal is to make sure that I get to the sessions that cover as many topics as possible.  This is important for me as a Solution Architect consultant specializing in Microsoft technologies.  To this end I have spent some time going through the sessions on the myTechEd site. The other reason for the trip is to connect with the Microsoft development community.  This includes both members of my local Midwest community and the global communities that I have only had online connections with.  Sharing the experience and getting a chance to exchange ideas with new and old friends is a great part of any convention.   I've acquired an old laptop (Acer TravelMate 4050 with an Italian keyboard) that boots up with the following options: Ubuntu, with Linux 3.0.0-12-generic Ubuntu, with Linux 3.0.0-12-generic (recovery mode) Memory test (memtest86+) Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200) When I choose the first option, the screen just goes blank with a flashing cursor. But I can go into grub command mode by typing 'c'. Now, I want to know what operating system is installed, and the files stored on my computer, so how do I do this? What can I do to maximise the use of this computer in its current state?

  In reading Alan Kay's question on Significant new inventions I was coming up with answers that were not new ideas but old ones that have been passed by in the main stream. So, what significant lost steps forward that happened in a side track should be revived in the main stream of software? These would be ideas that worked well in their context but a different context appeared and became dominant the context, even though it lacked the idea. It maybe that in the new dominant context one just cannot do something or it requires great effort to be exerted.

• I need advice on creating animal 3D walk cycles in XNA

  I want to purchase a number of 3D models from TurboSquid and animate them in an XNA game. I wrote a lot of games from 1985-1999 and have recently become involved with XNA. Now I would like to port one of my old games to the XBOX. I do have a background in 3D animation; but that was years ago. What is the current method for animating a walk cycle with a 3D model and using it inside XNA? Is there a book, software or a tutorial that you can recommend? • Running the application with F5 gives a message saying "\bin\Debug\Infrastructure.Layout.dll was not found"

  The problem here is the ProfileCatalog.xml file refers to the old assesmbly namesdlls. It does not get updated when the assembly names change. Steps to fix this issue: 1. Open the ProfileCatalog.xml file in the Shell project, and you'll find there are three ModuleInfo configuration items that need to have the solution name prefixed. 2. • FxCop / Code Analysis with VS2010 Ultimate

  I've getting some information about this, but I still can find a proper answer, I was asked recently in my company for this : "run a fxcop analysis on that code and tell me the results". Ok, I have VS2010 Ultimate which has code analysis, but before making any comment, I browse it on the internet cause I want to implement the best choice... So, let's say I'm gonna use the same rules on both analyzers: Should I recommend using one above the other? Should I say "hey, thats kinda old, let's use code analysis!" Should I get the same results on different computers? (for what I undersand, fxcop gives you some "points" and for what I've read, sometimes it gives you diff points on diff computers, I don't know about this with code analysis Thanks, any help would be appreciated

• Why Firefox caching work will reset in version 3 but version 16 don't?

  I am developing a web application and have the app deployed into Tomcat server. Tested on IE and Firefox and are working fine. Meaning when I close the browser and reopen the app, the data will be reset. When deploy to Websphere, the data is reset only in IE but Firefox don't. Meaning Firefox will cache the old data. I did try to clear the cache in FF but still failed. I did a test in FF3 and FF16, FF3 will reset the value but FF16 doesn't, I am just so curious why this could happened? Now I don't know whether this is my code problem or is actually the FF caching problem. Any clue on this?

• How do I justify upgrading to Windows Server 2008?

  We're just about to start a new greenfield project - it's a highly functional web application using ASP.NET MVC3, SQL Server etc. We're also going to be using Windows Workflow Foundation for the first time. Our client only wants to use his existing Windows Server 2003 web servers. My main issue (other than it is 8 years old) is that we don't much experierence of WWF development, but understand that using AppFabric (Server 2008 only) will improve WWF development. It's a significant cost to the client, as we need fail-over servers and a UAT environment as well. Am I correct in my understanding, and what methodologies can I use to justify the cost of upgrading?

I have uploaded sitemap vai google webmaster tools many times. • Writing drivers for a printer?

  My goal is to be able to fax 20 page pdf documents for free. I've looked online, and there are some free fax services, but all of them have their limits. I do have an old fax machine, but the documents that need to be faxed are on the computer, and to print them would be far from free. Unfortunately, the only way to send a fax with the machine is by scanning it. What's strange is that it can scan to the computer and print from it, but it won't fax from it... :(. Is it possible to write something (preferably C#, but it's going to take some learning anyway) that will allow me to send a fax from the computer? I have very little software experience, and none in anything like this, so I have no idea where to start. If it is possible, where can I find all the information needed to write the program?

  I'm working on an old vb6/access2003 app which is used to handle orders, bills of materials and that sort of things. I'm thinking about creating a form that I call every time the users needs to search for something. This should work like these: Click on the field to complete, let's say name of a buyer Open new form, search for the client and click on it Return the name of the buyer to the previous form (probably the header of the order) So, I would need to pass to the new form something that identify the type of search I have to do (so what access table to open) and return some values. Is my idea correct or there something better? I would like to use only one form for all the searches, now the app works with a lot of msflexgrid for every form.

  Well, NO.  my little three years old boys are very sick so I need to get them out of the day care.  they keep getting ear infection so bad even the ear tube is not working.  so, now do I give my $5000.00 to the government as a donation or keep my kids in the day care and loose the hearing?  what is going on? I was told I can change this Dependant care account ONLY in the case of a life change!  well, is not this a life change?  when a member of the family is very sick and has to go through an operation "Ear Tube", the operation does not work and keeps getting sick.  Would not this be a life change?

• Make public webcam. Which protocol, which codec. (Using VLC)

  Hi! I want to use my old (1GHz) PC as webcam video stream server (like you can see those road cameras). I thought of using VLC and already tried using http output but it was not really good. Too cpu hungry, too big stream (kBps), not stable... I been reading VLC how-to's but thre is still a question. Which output should I use? Http, RTSP, UDP? I want to make for more than one computer at the same time (multicast). Which codec should be good? PC is not so fast so it shouldn't be too cpu hungry codec. Mpeg2, mpeg4, xvid? how much video buffer should I use (vb=?)? What about setting IP and ports? So I need some help with ideas, but if someone can make a VLC command line it's even better :) Oh, computer has direct internet connection and own IP.

• Run a script with user interaction on log out / shutdown?

  I'd like to run a script on shut down, which interrupts the logout process and and pops up a window with zenity. My target is to get autofsck working with lightdm. It seems to work with 12.04 after installing the old *.deb file, if one runs the check script manually. In order to use it, it should run automatically on log out and ask the user if she/he wants to check the disc on shutdown. There is the option session-cleanup-script in the file /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf which seems to work, if a bash file with full path is used (I can't place the command directly there). But if I press shutdown, there is no time for a user choice. Is there any other option to solve this problem?

• Problem reinstall GRUB2

  I tried to upgrade from 12.04 - 12.10. The install seemed to go well but upon reboot, I get the grub recovery console. I tried to reinstall using the boot-repair Boot Repair which usually works a treat. However this time it says it is scanning my HDD and never recovers. When I try to reinstall grub using the old grub-install <dir> <dev> --recheck --debug &> gruboutput.txt I get this Pastebin link I think it should be installing to dev/mapper/isw_gbaaebhfe_Volume0 even when I made -- dev/mapper/isw_gbaaebhfe_Volume3 Any help would be appreciated

• Can't start ubuntu 11.10, Stops at login screen!

  I have been trying to dual boot ubuntu with windows 7 via WUBI on my custom built pc but without success. When i start the computer i can choose windows or ubuntu i choose ubuntu and when i should get to the login screen the screen just stays purple/pink. Tried safe mode but cant get in there either. I have tried reinstall but did not work either. :( The second time i install ubuntu the screen was purple/pink and the screen was cut of so the left side was on the right side and right side on left side (hard to describe) Third time installing (The last time) it is just like the first time please help!!!! cant get nowhere without help i am kinda new at ubuntu and its creepy commands. Had ubuntu on my old computer. I think the problem is my hardware so here is my computer specs: Amd Fx 6100 Amd HIS Radeon HD 6950 ICEQ X Asus Sabertooth 990fx 1TB Harddrive I have no idea the name on it Please Help me!! • How do I remove Ubuntu from a dual-boot Windows 7 laptop?

  Im new to Ubuntu and liked it a lot! however after testing it on my old crappy laptop i now want to remove it. Ive looked at tutorials on how to uninstall and it says to start by deleting the linux partition of the hard drive.however after opening Computer management, I cannot locate my linux partition. same as when I go to System Configuration, and click on the "boot" tab, my computer does not list any operating system other than Windows 7. Any Way around this or perhaps a different way to uninstall?

• Mic not working on Lenovo G470

  I used a Lenovo G470 laptop (Core i5 2410M processor, AMD Radeon 6370M and 2GB DDR3 RAM) and I installed Ubuntu 12.04. I can't get the microphone to work. I encountered this type of issue before in my old Acer Aspire One with Ubuntu 10.04/10.10, and installing PulseAudio Volume Control and tweaking a little solves the problem. I tried the same solution to no avail in 12.04. I tried entering the alsa in terminal and my mic is not detected there. Does anybody encountered a similar problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  I am a UI team leader. My team has a lot of projects using different languages/technologies. In some parts we will rewrite (gradually - @Ampt this is for you) the application in order to enable new fresh technologies in and get old dinosaurs out. I am going to use Node Package Manager to set up an "all powerful" build/dependency manager. Can I use NPM to depend on a private github repository? Can I use NPM to depend on SVN? Will NPM play nice with quickbuild? Since each project might have a slightly different structure (think jetty/maven or play!framework) can I configure NPM to install some dependencies in different folders while still running it from the project's root? How can I, using NPM, get development resources out and build a packaged product? (like a war) Yes/No - is there a reason to use grunt? No discussion, just one liners.

• livecd won't boot 11.04

  I bought a brand new computer yesterday (Toshiba Satellite Pro L770-10T : Intel Core i5 2410M, 2,3 GHz, 4096 Mo RAM, nVidia GeForce GT 525M) that simply won't boot any livecd I tried. I am using debian/ubuntu for a long time but this is the first time I can't boot a livecd Here is what I tried without success: Ubuntu 11.04 i386 and x64 both desktop and alternate Debian stable livecd old working ubuntu livecds including 8.x 9.x 10.x On ubuntu-10.04.2-desktop-i386.iso I had a kernel panic On 11.04 packages were corrupted although md5 and sha1 were correct I must add that those were burned on different cds CD-R or CD-RW. • Should I force users to update an application?

  I'm writing an application for a medium sized company that will be used by about 90% of our employees and our clients. In planning for the future we decided to add functionality that will verify that the version of the program that is running is a version that we still support. Currently the application will forcequit if the version is not among our supported versions. Here is my concern. Hypothetically, in version 2.0.0.1 method "A" crashes and burns in glorious fashion and method "B" works just fine. We release 2.0.0.2 to fix method A and deprecate version 0.1. Now if someone is running 0.1 to use method B they will be forced to update to fix something that isn't an issue for them right now. My question is, will the time saved not troubleshooting old, unsupported versions outweigh the cost in usability?
