• slow php command line performance - is this normal or do I have an install problem?

  I have a simple PHP app that prints 'hello world'. When I run it from the command line it takes 6 seconds. Is this normal? It seems to take 1 seconds before "hello world" prints, then 5 seconds after. I assume this is overhead of the interpreter. I am running PHP version 5.2.12 on Windows Server 2008 R2. Could this be an install issue, or is it typical? I did a manual install of PHP then added whatever components were needed to run Drupal. The only PHP addon I remember adding was MDB2, CGI support is there too. I am used to a Lua project I run from the command line, hundreds of lines of code that will run in under a second. I have some unit tests I run from the command line, and already with just a few they are very slow. I run them from Netbeans and the tests are still very slow.

Then I'll have HTML helper objects like this in my view: $html->input(array('type' => 'submit', 'value' => $lng['submit'], etc...)); ... $html->div(array('value' => sprintf($lng['generated'], $generated, date('H:i')), etc...)); The translations can appear in PDF, XLS and AJAX responses too. The problem with my approach so far is that I now have loads of global $lng; in every class where there is a function that spits out UI code.. How do other people get the translation into the object? Is it one scenario where globals aren't actually that bad? Would it be madness to create a class with accessors when the dictionary terms are all static?

  Was looking through the web for an answer but it seems like there is no clear recipe for it. What I need is a signed angle of rotation between two vectors Va and Vb lying within the same 3D plane and having the same origin knowing that: the plane contatining both vectors is an arbitrary and is not parallel to XY or any other of cardinal planes Vn - is a plane normal both vectors along with the normal have the same origin O = { 0, 0, 0 } Va - is a reference for measuring the left handed rotation at Vn The angle should be measured in such a way so if the plane would be XY plane the Va would stand for X axis unit vector of it. I guess I should perform a kind of coordinate space transformation by using the Va as the X-axis and the cross product of Vb and Vn as the Y-axis and then just using some 2d method like with atan2() or something. Any ideas? Formulas?

  I am interested in a way how to read GPU temperature (graphics processing unit, main chip of graphic card), by using some video card driver API? Everyone knows that there two different chip manufacturers (popular ones, at least) - ATI and nVIDIA - so there are two different kinds of drivers to read temperature from. I'm interested in learning how to do it for each different card driver. Language in question is irrelevant - it could be C/C++, .NET platform, Java, but let's say that .NET is preferred.   As stated in the framework design guidelines and the WWW in general, the current guideline is to name your constants like this LastTemplateIndex as opposed to LAST_TEMPLATE_INDEX With the PascalCasing approach, how do you differentiate between a Property and a Constant. ErrorCodes.ServerDown is fine. But what about private constants within your class ? I use quite a lot of them for naming magic numbers.. or for expected values in my unit tests and so on. The ALL_CAPS style helps me know that it is a constant . _testApp.SelectTemplate(LAST_TEMPLATE_INDEX); *Disclosure: I have been using the SCREAMING_CAPS style for a while for constants + I find it more readable than squishedTogetherPascalCasedName. Now my goal is to measure distances (NOT actual distances, distance can be in any arbitrary unit) . eg: How do I find the length of the hall? (until the window) Or the height of the bookshelves? Use 'ignore' to discard the result of the expression, or 'let' to bind the result to a name. So what is the best way to iterate over a DataReader and create a list?

• Rotate using a transform, then change frame origin, and view expands??

  This is quite the iPhone quandry. I am working on a library, but have narrowed down my problem to very simple code. What this code does is create a 50x50 view, applies a rotation transform of a few degrees, then shifts the frame down a few times. The result is the 50x50 view is now much larger looking.   Is there a free code coverage tool suitable for use with .NET 4 and NUnit that runs from the command line (and is thus suitable for use on a build server)? Please note that any tools that require editions of Visual Studio higher than Professional are not appropriate in this case. I am asking this question because I can't get NCover 1.5.8 to work with NUnit 2.5.5 on a .NET 4 C# app. I can run the unit tests, and I can generate a Coverage.Xml file, but it is empty - it contains no sequence points. After a lot of research, I have concluded that this is because NCover 1.5.8 simply doesn't work with .NET 4. However, if you know better, please feel free to answer this question from another user.

• Generic version control strategy for select table data within a heavily normalized database

  Hi Sorry for the long winded title, but the requirement/problem is rather specific. With reference to the following sample (but very simplified) structure (in psuedo SQL), I hope to explain it a bit better. TABLE StructureName { Id GUID PK, Name varchar(50) NOT NULL } TABLE Structure { Id GUID PK, ParentId GUID (FK to Structure), NameId GUID (FK to StructureName) NOT NULL } TABLE Something { Id GUID PK, RootStructureId GUID (FK to Structure) NOT NULL } As one can see, Structure is a simple tree structure (not worried about ordering of children for the problem). StructureName is a simplification of a translation system. Finally 'Something' is simply something referencing the tree's root structure. This is just one of many tables that need to be versioned, but this one serves as a good example for most cases. There is a requirement to version to any changes to the name and/or the tree 'layout' of the Structure table. Previous versions should always be available. There seems to be a few possibilities to tackle this issue, like copying the entire structure, but most approaches causes one to 'loose' referential integrity. Example if one followed this approach, one would have to make a duplicate of the 'Something' record, given that the root structure will be a new record, and have a new ID. Other avenues of possible solutions are looking into how Wiki's handle this or go a lot further and look how proper version control systems work. Currently, I feel a bit clueless how to proceed on this in a generic way. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks leppie

• Fastest implementation of the frac function in C#

  I would like to implement a frac function in C# (just like the one in hsl here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb509603%28VS.85%29.aspx) but since it is for a very processor intensive application i would like the best version possible. I was using something like public float Frac(float value) { return value - (float)Math.Truncate(value); } but I'm having precision problems, for example for 2.6f it's returning in the unit test Expected: 0.600000024f But was: 0.599999905f I know that I can convert to decimal the value and then at the end convert to float to obtain the correct result something like this: public float Frac(float value) { return (float)((decimal)value - Decimal.Truncate((decimal)value)); } But I wonder if there is a better way without resorting to decimals...

• Rewriting a simple Pygame 2D drawing function in C++

  I have a 2D list of vectors (say 20x20 / 400 points) and I am drawing these points on a screen like so: for row in grid: for point in row: pygame.draw.circle(window, white, (particle.x, particle.y), 2, 0) pygame.display.flip() #redraw the screen This works perfectly, however it's much slower then I expected. I want to rewrite this in C++ and hopefully learn some stuff (I am doing a unit on C++ atm, so it'll help) on the way. What's the easiest way to approach this? I have looked at Direct X, and have so far followed a bunch of tutorials and have drawn some rudimentary triangles. However I can't find a simple (draw point).

• DBCC CHECKDB WITH DATA_PURITY gives out of range error

  Hi there, I have restore a SQL Server 2000 database onto SQL Server 2005 and then run DBCC CHECKDB WITH DATA_PURITY and I get this error: Msg 2570, Level 16, State 3, Line 2 Page (1:19558), slot 13 in object ID 181575685, index ID 1, partition ID 293374720802816, alloc unit ID 11899744092160 (type "In-row data"). Column "NumberOfShares" value is out of range for data type "numeric". Update column to a legal value. The column NumberOfShares is a numeric (19,6) data type. If I run the following select max (NumberOfShares) from AUDIT_Table select min (NumberOfShares) from AUDIT_Table I get: 22678647.839110 -1845953000.000000 These values are inside the bounds of a numeric (19,6) so I'm not sure why the DBCC check fails. Any ideas to find out why it fails? Do I need to use DBCC PAGE? How would you troubleshoot this? Thanks, Mark.

I found some framworks like accessunit but that's Unit testing, what abouut the forms? What about the different reports etc. A counter-example in "testing" is e.g the rails or Seaside or Smalltalk area. Where testing is thought of as integral part. But I have not found anything comparable for Access based solutions. Maybe some of you know better?

• How can I require an attribute on a class definition?

  Is there a way to enforce a compile requirement for certain attributes on a class or interface implementation? For example, let's say my application uses a series of static classes that contain const int resource values. I'd like to decorate the class in a Description attribute to describe its contents. In concept, I'd like to apply this attribute requirement to an interface, then each static class would implement it with its required Description. I could write a run-time check or a unit test to check compliance. But really a compile-time check would be best. Is there such a thing?

  Hi, I am trying to break up horrible linq to sql queries to make them a bit more readable. Say I want to return all orders for product which in the previous year had more than 100 orders. So, original query is: from o in _context.Orders where (from o1 in _context.Orders where o1.Year == o.Year - 1 && o1.Product == o.Product select o1).Count() > 100 select o; Messy. What I'd like to be able to do is to be able to break it down, eg: private IEnumerable<Order> LastSeasonOrders(Order order) { return (from o in _context.Orders where o.Year == order.Year - 1 && o.Product == order.Product select o); } which then lets me change the original query to: from o in _context.Orders where LastSeasonOrders(o).Count() > 100 select o; This doesn't seem to work, as I get method Blah has no supported translation to SQL when the query is run. Any quick tips on the correct way to achieve this?

I can do this myself. etc...many other baseless arguments. In an ecommerece business, the end-users should not have to install anything, everything should be managed by them from the web, and the developers should be the ones installing things to increase productivity and teamwork i.e.: Version Control Systems Build Tools (ANT, NANT, Maven, continuous integration, CSS Frameworks) Integrated Development Environments Frameworks (Unit testing, etc) Etc... How else can I get my point across without sound crass?

• Running MSBuild script on development machine

  Hi, I have an MSBuild script which performs a lot of tasks, as it is run on our build server. I want the script to be run each time a developer builds from Visual Studio on their local development machine, so that a) the build process they are runnning locally is the same as that run by the build server so any problems in the build can be identified immediately by the developer b) many of the operations of the build script are run on local builds, for example running of unit tests, generation of code coverage reports etc How is this possible in Visual Studio (2008)? Note I am running a single solution product with multiple projects.
