• Issues with web hosting at home

  I want to host a small personal website at home. One basic problem I am hitting is, From inside home network, I cannot access my domain name. I have to use the local ip (something like 192.168.1.4) to access the website. This ip is the desktop which is hosting the website. Because of this mapping, I have issues setting up a simple wordpress blog on it too. How do I get past this issue? edit:0 when I try to access www.example.com (my domain) from within my home network, I get redirected to my router login. PS: 1) I am using dyndns service to map my non-static ip to my domain name. 2) My portforwarding works fine.

• Which one scales better asp or php?

  Let's say the website is doing fine(forums,pictures,ajax). And it needs scaling up/scaling out. I feel more comfortable with php but I have worked with asp.net as well. Would you say asp.net is much more powerful, more robust and thus easier to scale out? What would be the pros and cons of converting the website to asp.net in regards to scalability and performance versus keeping the website written in PHP? Examples of personal experience in making such a conversion would be a plus. Thank you.

  I'm assuming that a group of people at Google have control of certain sections of google.com, but how does Google make sure that employees don't accidentally or intentionally sabotage the website? Does Google use Adobe Contribute or some similar product for sharing/publishing the website. Do employees use WebDAV, FTP, SFTP, or SSH to publish the site. Since Google has hundreds of thousands of servers it probably takes some time for its servers to update. Do they transmit the new copy of the website to all servers before publishing at once? This question does not apply to Google editing a database and having a page reflect the database's changes. It applies to employees editing the source code and/ or back end of the site.

  Hello, I've started doing some research on the technologies that I will need for my website. I'm trying to implement a really simple website with OpenID user registration. The website will store a block of text for each user. I imagine this means that I will need a database with: User ID Open ID url Data Having said that, I'm still having trouble deciding what I really need to do this. I know that I will need the following for the actual site: Javascript JQuery CSS But on the back end, I'm kind of lost at the moment. I've been looking at the OpenID-Selector, which is coded in Javascript. It seems like it's exactly what is used on this site. Will I actually need PHP? MySQL for the data and user registration? Somewhere I read that I can manage the ads that are being shown in my website (480 x 60) and filter out the ads on a CPM/CPC basis. NOTE: I don't have any ads to be displayed on other's websites. • Pointing domain away from google

  I've already asked this question on google apps support, didnt fet an answer yet, and I am in a bit of a hurry. Need to have that website up by monday. Question: We have a domain registered at 101domain, we used a domain just for google apps, for email, and some services, and domain was never used for website. Now we pointed domain to the local hosting service, set everything like it should be, and pointed back to google from hosting service for gmail and gmail works perfectly. Problem is that we tried to set up a website at hosting service but domain still points to google apps login. Everything looks like it should, we recently bought 2 more domains that are set up the same (we use google apps on them too), the only difference tha I can think of is that we didn't use for apps first. Could this be because CNAME lags behind DNS server change?

  Hi, I would like to create a share link to my website using javascript: script src="[url-to-my-script]" Basically the main idea behind this is to render HTML block with an image and link to the website. By using JavaScript approach I can control the look and feel of that link + potentially I could change the link html in the future without touching partner websites. The only potential problem I see with this approach is SEO. I'm not sure if google will be able to index that link to my website, since it's generated by javascript.

What I know I can track is: -what products people view on my website (default Google Analytics pageview behaviour). -what affiliate links people click on my website (with GA _trackEvent). What am I missing is: -what products people end up buying after clicking on the affiliate links. Does the Amazon affiliate program offers you any mechanism for linking a purchase with some data from your website? I noticed that I was able to add custom parameters and values to my affiliate links and the link checker was still happy with them, if Amazon gave the links that initiated an order then I would be able to cross reference the orders using custom parameters...

• Questions about software licensing

  I've been having a discussion about licensing and open source software. Basically - the other guy is saying that licensing is easy, if you're going to build a product you can use an (any) open source project and make money by selling that code. My issue is that say I create a website or app with a project that uses a GPL license the restrictions aren't so straight forward - correct me if i'm wrong on each of these scenarios: 1 - i create an iPhone app using GPL code and put that app into the appstore - the code must be freely available to people buying that app. 2 - i create a website that my client hosts - they must have access to the code. 3 - i create a website as SaaS that my client "leases" but does not own - though it is hosted on their infrastructure - they must have access to that code Am i right on each of those assumptions? Are there any other issues i should be aware of under any other licensing terms for other licenses?

My directory structure is D:\xampp\htdocs\website\ //<--root D:\xampp\htdocs\website\library //<--where script runs D:\xampp\htdocs\website\uploads //<--where I'd like to save I know on a *nix server, I can just chmod the permission to 0777.   I'm given the task to increase user visits and conversions on for a recruitment website. Conversions would be interested job seekers submitting their CV. The manager would first like to increase the organic search results and optimize the website before starting with targeted campaigns. The problem is, they are using a proprietary recruitment software platform which I can barely add changes to. For example, the url's all look like dynamic url's without any semantic meaning and the markup is almost completely build automatically by that platform.   Given the following: The website does not call any external images or scripts, all the content is hosted on a server that is in our control. The website does not contain the meta tag, nor does it contain the html file that would authorize a Google Account access to Webmaster Tools. The access logs have not been provided to any 2nd or 3rd party. Is it possible for a 3rd party to get an idea of how many hits the site is getting, or are they limited to just seeing how high the site ranks? How could the 3rd party determine how well the site is doing under these restrictions? Is there a website for that that you know of?

  I owned two website. Let's say as example www.first.com and www.second.com. I have two apps in Google chrome-store whose app URL is: app1 URL = www.first.com/currency_converter.php app2 URL = www.first.com/currency_converter.php respectively. Currently if user lunch/click on first app URL then I am forwarding them to my first website homepage (www.first.com), where I have AdSense code with currency converter app. In this way I am generating Google ad impression and traffic for my first website (i.e www.first.com). I've convinced them to upgrade Joomla to atleast 2.5 I have already taken the database backup. Most links I have seen talk of backing up the entire public_html folder (The website runs on a shared host). So which of the folders in the public_html folder are from the content of the website, and which are of the old Joomla framework? I'm afraid that I might overwrite files of the new Joomla framework with the old framework, if copy all the files and folders into the new installation.

But after their login we redirect them to a third-party website where we need more information from them. I want to create subdirectories for each of the website's categories, which in turn have their own subdirectories for easy user navigation. Example: website.com/directory. I am aware that by placing an index.html file within each directory, the browser automatically detects and navigates to that page, but that seems like a messy solution (having multiple index.html files, albeit in distinct folders), and I cannot imagine everyone does that.   I am working on a website that requires a bit of marketing; let me explain. This website is offering a single, say, iTunes 50$ voucher to a lucky winner. To be entered in the draw, you need to invite (and has to join) at least one friend to the website. Pretty straightforward. Now, of course it would be easy for anyone to just create a fake account and invite that account so, I was thinking of some other way to somehow find out of possible cheating. I was thinking of an IP check on the newly subscribed (invited) user, and if there is the same IP logged in the last 24 hours, and if that's the case, investigate more about it. But I was thinking that maybe there is a more clever way around this issue. Has anyone ever though about this? What other solutions did you try? Thanks in advance.
