• Create two semi-transparent images that when stacked produce the target image

  Due to CSS limitations I am forced to stack to semi-transparent images on my website. I won't go into detail regarding the CSS since if I can get this question answered the problem is moot. Anyway, I would like to modify image A in the GIMP such that it will look like it did originally after being stacked on top of image B. Both image A and image B have their opacities set to 50%. Image B is a solid color throughout, whereas image A has some minor details such as a gradient. • Easy way to add multiple existing .csproj to a Visual Studio Solution?

  I've checked out a branch of C# code from source control. It contains maybe 50 projects in various folders. There's no existing .sln file to be found. I intended to create a blank solution to add existing solutions. The UI only lets me do this one project at a time. Is there something I'm missing? I'd like to specify a list of *.csproj files and somehow come up with a .sln file that contains all the projects.

• Where does complexity bloat from?

  Many of our design decisions are based on our gut feeling about how to avoid complexity and bloating. Some of our complexity-fears are true, we have plenty of painful experience on throwing away deprecated code. Other times we learn that some particular task isn't really that complex as we though it to be. We notice for example that upkeeping 3000 lines of code in one file isn't that difficult... or that using special purpose "dirty flags" isn't really bad OO practice... or that in some cases it's more convenient to have 50 variables in one class that have 5 different classes with shared responsibilities... One friend has even stated that adding functions to the program isn't really adding complexity to your system. So, what do you think, where does bloated complexity creep from? Is it variable count, function count, code line count, code line count per function, or something else?

• Are there any widely-agreed upon guidelines for rating your language knowledge on a scale?

  The question was imagined after a co-worker was complaining for an hour about some guy who could not answer basic Java questions on an interview after self-identifying himself as "8 out of 10" on Java. While that was an obvious fib, I personally always had major trouble defining my specific language skills on a sliding scale unless I'm given specific guidelines (remember 40 standard libraries by heart? Able to solve 10 random Project Euler problems in <30 mins each? Can write implementation of A, B and C data-structures from scratch in 30 mins? Know 30% of standard? Can answer 50% of questions on StackOverflow pertaining to the language?) So, I was wondering - is there some sort of commonly accepted methodology for translating such tangible benchmarks into "rate yourself on a language between 1-10"? "Kernighan gets an A, God gets a B, everyone else gets C and less" type jokes are not helpful :)

• Exception on malloc for a structure in C

  Hi all, I have a structure defined like so: typedef struct { int n; int *n_p; void **list_pp; size_t rec_size; int n_buffs; size_t buff_size } fl_hdr_type; and in my code I Have a function for initlialization that has the following fl_hdr_type *fl_hdr; fl_hdr = malloc(sizeof(fl_hdr_type) + (buff_size_n * rec_size_n)); where those buffer size are passed in to the function to allow space for the buffers as well. The size is pretty small typically..100*50 or something like that..plenty of memory on this system to allocate it. Any ideas why this fails?

  hey i have the following query: select * from table where table.DateUpdated >='2010-05-03 08:31:13:000' all the rows in the table being queried have the following DateUpdated: 2010-05-03 08:04:50.000 it returns all of the rows in the table - even though it should return none. I am pretty sure this is because of some crappy date/time regional thing. if i swap the date to be select * from table where table.DateUpdated >='2010-03-05 08:31:13:000' then it does as it should. How can i force everything to be using the same settings? this is doing my head in :) This is sql generated by NHIbernate from my WCF service if that matters. w://

Unfortunately I don't have this experience, and I would like to keep things simple as it possible and don't rewrite all Django admin interface. Just add this functionality for one Field.   I had code that parses date as follows: String ALT_DATE_TIME_FORMAT = "yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ss.SSSZ"; SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat( ALT_DATE_TIME_FORMAT); Date date = sdf.parse(requiredTimeStamp); And it was working fine, suddenly, this stopped working. It turns out an admin made some config changes on the server and the date is currently being returned as "2010-12-27T10:50:44.000-08:00" which is not parse-able by the above pattern. I have two questions: The first would be what pattern would parse the date being returned by the JVM in the format above (specifically, just '-08:00' as the time zone)? And second, where exactly would one change such settings on a linux RHEL 5 server so that we are aware of such changes in the future?

  I have this pseudo-code in java: bytes[] hash = MD5.hash("example"); String hexString = toHexString(hash); //This returns something like a0394dbe93f bytes[] hexBytes = hexString.getBytes("UTF-8"); Now, hexBytes[] and hash[] are different. I know I'm doing something wrong since hash.length() is 16 and hexBytes.length() is 32. Maybe it has something to do with java using Unicode for chars (just a wild guess here). Anyways, the question would be: how to get the original hash[] array from the hexString. • Why does my UIScrollView change it's original content offset when I scroll?

  Before I scroll, my UIScrollView is laid out perfectly. See here However if I scroll up, the view bounces as I go out of bounds and then resets too high. See here I am going to guess this has to do with a hack that I did earlier to get the view to originally show like in the first screen shot. For some reason, to get my view to look like the second screen shot, I do: [scrollView setContentOffset:CGPointMake(0,-50) animated:YES]; in viewDidLoad But if I set the content offset to 0,0 in viewDidLoad, I get something that looks like the second screen shot when the view loads. This doesn't make much sense to me because if the content offset is 0,0 I would think the content should begin in the upper right corner of the screen. Does anyone know what could be going on here? • Python ValueError: not allowed to raise maximum limit

  I'm using python 2.7.2 on mac os 10.7.3 I'm doing a recursive algorithm in python with more than 50 000 recursion levels. I tried to increase the maximum recursion level to 1 000 000 but my python shell still exit after 18 000 recursion levels. I tried to increase the resources available : import resource resource.setrlimit(resource.RLIMIT_STACK, (2**29,-1)) sys.setrecursionlimit(10**6) and I get this error : Traceback (most recent call last): File "<pyshell#58>", line 1, in <module> resource.setrlimit(resource.RLIMIT_STACK,(2**29,-1)) ValueError: not allowed to raise maximum limit I don't know why I cannot raise the maximum limit ? thanks for your suggestions .
