• Why is display:inline killing IE 8.0 performance?

  I have an image gallery based on this jQuery plugin: http://jqueryfordesigners.com/demo/slider-gallery.html This works really well in Firefox, Chrome and even IE 7.0, but when I try it with more than 50 images in IE 8.0 the performance is incredible slow. Just hovering over the thumbnail brings the CPU load to 100%. At first I thought it's a Javascript problem, so I used the IE profiler, but the results were normal. Next I checked the CSS and finally found the cause: .sliderGallery UL LI { display: inline; } This gets the thumbnails to align horizontally. If I chance it to display:block, performance is fine and the scroller is still working but obviously it looks funny, because the thumbs are aligned vertically. My questions: Why does IE 8 have this problem with many display:inline elements What can I do to solve it I'll gladly provide more information if necessary.

• Ruby: would using Fibers increase my DB insert throughput?

  Currently I am using Ruby 1.9.1 and the 'ruby-mysql' gem, which unlike the 'mysql' gem is written in ruby only. This is pretty slow actually, as it seems to insert at a rate of almost 1 per second (SLOOOOOWWWWWW). And I have a lot of inserts to make too, its pretty much what this script does ultamitely. I am using just 1 connection (since I am using just one thread). I am hoping to speed things up by creating a fiber that will create a new DB connection insert 1-3 records close the DB connection I would imagine launching 20-50 of these would greatly increase DB throughput. Am I correct to go along this route? I feel that this is the best option, as opposed to refactoring all of my DB code :(

  GDB's disassemble command is nice for short C identifiers, e.g. main. For long, mangled C++ identifiers the verbosity is overkill.   I'm creating my own Group model; I'm not referring to the builtin Group model. I want each hroup to be a member of another group (it's parent), but there is the one "top" group that doesn't have a parent group. The admin interface won't let me create a group without entering a parent. I get the error personnel_group.parent_id may not be NULL. My Group model looks like this: class Group(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=50) parent = models.ForeignKey('self', blank=True, null=True) order = models.IntegerField() icon = models.ImageField(upload_to='groups', blank=True, null=True) description = models.TextField(blank=True, null=True) How can I accomplish this? As we have rank() function in sql server do we have something with which we can find the students rank??? • Idioms for a three-state toggle?

  I have a table column where each row has one of three states, and the purpose of the row is to offer manipulation AND display of this property with three states. My current development view is to have three tightly packed radio buttons with labels at the head of the columns (and every 50 rows or so) and onClick they send an AJAX request and thar she blows. This is fugly. Is there a standard idiom for a control like this? I'm currently mocking up something similar to the iPhone on/off toggle, but with a "middle" state. Any input would be welcome.

Is there a utility method to do this? e.g. for 1,2,3,4,5 post randomization it might be either [1,5,4,2,3 or 2,1,3,5,4 or 3,1,2,4,5 or ...] I would like to know if there is a java utility method / class which already provides this capability?

There are about 50 fields in the form that should be considered 'digit' fields where they shouldn't be anything less than 0. What should I change with this Javascript to ensure that all 'digit' like fields have this alert box pop up? I cannot use jquery/mootools for validation - it has to be flat Javascript. Thanks.

• Need help with Drupal bulk mail low open rate for legitimate mailing list

  I've moved from constant contact to Drupal Simplenews/Mimemail/SMTP. Previously the open rate was around 50% for constant contact, but now it's 4-5% for the same list via the mentioned setup. Mail is getting out from the server, but it's having an issue anyway. Here's the setup: -The e-mail list consists of approximately 80,000 addresses which is queued at 10,000 e-mails per cron run (which runs hourly). -The server is a Dual Core2Quad machine with 2GB of RAM. -When mail is being sent, the mail queue will usually go up to ~1000 at the beginning of the hour before reducing to ~250 by the time the next cron occurs. -Newsletter is themed to display custom style for newsletter on send -Newsletter is received by some, but appears to be bounced by many (based on low open rate_ -I've added SPF, domain keys, and a PTR record to the DNS -Server hostname (listed in ptr) is different from hosted domain -Very low spam number via Spamassassin -IP and domain are not blacklisted -Mail goes out via SMTP module on delivery. Any ideas?

If I was writing out the formula by hand I would put something like newframe=rbind(oldframe[1:rownum,],row_to_insert=row_to_insert,oldframe[(rownum+1:nrow(oldframe),] to name row_to_insert. Could someone tell me how to do this in a function? • C++ - Opening a file inside a function using fopen

  I am using Visual Studio 2005 (C++). I am passing a string into a function as a char array. I want to open the file passed in as a parameter and use it. I know my code works to an extent, because if I hardcode the filename as the first parameter it works perfectly. I do notice if I look at the value as a watch, the value includes the address aside the string literal. I have tried passing in the filename as a pointer, but it then complains about type conversion with __w64. As I said before it works fine with "filename.txt" in place of fileName. Unfortunately I guess I have the same problem as some of you, in that the company I work for wants to continue keeping our projects on VS 2008. • problem with HttpWebRequest.GetResponse perfomance in multithread applcation

  I have very bad perfomance of HttpWebRequest.GetResponse method when it is called from different thread for different URLs. For example if we have one thread and execute url1 it requires 3sec. If we ececute url1 and url2 in parallet it requires 10sec, first request ended after 8sec and second after 10sec. If we exutet 10 URLs url1, url2, ... url0 it requires 1min 4 sec!!! first request ended after 50 secs! I use GetResponse method. I tried te set DefaultConnectionLimit but it doesn't help. If use BeginGetRequest/EndGetResponse methods it works very fast but only if this methods called from one thread. If from different it is also very slowly. I need to execute Http requests from many threads at one time. ?an anyone ever encountered such a problem? Thank you for any suggestions.

• CURL issue in PHP while getting location list

  I am retrieving the nearest locations available from a given address (Longitude/Latitude) from geolocation website. It works fine, but for some places it gives junk characters in the name. Moreover, in browser I am getting different characters compared to my PHP CURL functionality. Here is the URL http://www.geoplugin.net/extras/nearby.gp?lat=17.7374669&long=83.3214858&limit=5&radius=50&format=php One of the location is "Sitampeta" in original location name, but in browser I am getting "Sitammapeta" where as in CURL function I am getting "SÄ«tammapeta". Please tell me why this difference. • (Visual) C++ project dependency analysis

  I have a few large projects I am working on in my new place of work, which have a complicated set of statically linked library dependencies between them. The libs number around 40-50 and it's really hard to determine what the structure was initially meant to be, there isn't clear documentation on the full dependency map. What tools would anyone recommend to extract such data? Presumably, in the simplest manner, if did the following: define the set of paths which correspond to library units set all .cpp/.h files within those to belong to those compilation units capture the 1st order #include dependency tree One would have enough information to compose a map - refactor - and recompose the map, until one has created some order. I note that http://www.ndepend.com have something nice but that's exclusively .NET unfortunately. I read something about Doxygen being able accomplish some static dependency analysis with configuration; has anyone ever pressed it into service to accomplish such a task?

  I was playing with the Stack Exchange Data Explorer and ran this query: http://odata.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/q/2828/rising-stars-top-50-users-ordered-on-rep-per-day Notice down in the results, rows 11 and 12 have the same value and so are mis-numbered, even though the row_number() function takes the same order by parameter as the query. I know the correct fix here is to specify an additional tie-breaker column in the order by clauses, but I'm more curious as to why/how the row_number() function returned different results on the same data? If it makes a difference anywhere, this runs on Azure.

  I have a parent master table that is generic enough to hold the common information of the children. Since the children were substantially different, we created separate tables for them. So I have something like this: tblMaster -------- MasterID int Name varchar(50) --Common to all children and there are a bunch of fields like this ChildType int -- Type of Child either ChildOne or ChildTwo ChildID int -- need to store ChildOneID or ChildTwoID depending on type of Child, so that i can refer to children tblChild1 -------- ChildOneID int IDENTITY tblChild2 --------- ChildTwoID int IDENTITY Should I have a ChildID in the master that is either ChildOneID or ChildTwoID based on the ChildType column? I have a number of children and I have simplified it for this question. The other way is to add ChildOneID and ChildTwoID as columns in the master, but since i have a number of columns, I will have a lot of null columns EDIT: Any help is appreciated
