  • How to access USB stick content from VMWare running Ubuntu 10.10?

    Hi, I am running Ubuntu 10.10 via VMWare under Windows 7. I have followed the procedure to install the USB stick. It is now connected to the host. However, I don't know how to access the content of the stick. My Google research indicates that this may be a mounting issue. I read somewhere that I should check /proc/bus/usb, but the usb directory does not exist in /proc/bus. Unfortunately, I am not a Linux expert at this. The ultimate issue I am trying to solve is the one describe here. I am trying to use vi to create ~/.vmware/config, but it is virtually impossible to use vi, since I don't have access to the arrow keys (chicken & egg problem). I have created the config file on my usb stick and want to copy it where it should be. Thanks!

  • Booting CDs/USB devices after installing Windows 8

    I recently installed Windows 8 on one of my four primary partitions. I had two partitions for Windows 7 (boot and os), one for the Windows System Recovery Environment and the last for Ubuntu. I was often using Ubuntu, but after the installation of Windows 8 Pro I couldn't boot in it because it needed the reinstallation of GRUB2. So I thought to do it by Terminal in a live cd; but when I tried to boot the Live CD, it booted me Windows 8 Pro. This is a problem of UEFI, Secure Boot or my BIOS? It didn't happen never before now. And if it's a problem of Secure Boot, how to disable it? Thanks in advance, Sho.

  • Autorun when USB stick is inserted

    Hi, I'm trying to prompt users to run my installer, whenever they plug in my USB device. I'd like this to work on all (most?) Windows OSes. I have an autorun.inf file in the root dir of my USB key with these contents: [Autorun] ShellExecute=setup.exe Icon=setup.exe UseAutoplay=1 It doesn't seem to do very much at all. Well... it does change the icon properly, but nothing gets executed and the user doesn't get any prompts. I've tried it on both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2003. Any ideas?

  • How can I automatically require a password when connecting to a WD MyBookLive?

    I have created a user which has specific privileges to access the shares on our WD MyBookLive Network drive (ie it requires a password to connect), however after connecting once Windows seems to remember the password (or at least for the rest of the session). How can I make it so it is necessary to require a password every time the user connects to the drive or makes some change on Windows? I am particularly thinking of Cryptolocker and other variants of "ransomeware" which will try and connect to the drive and encrypt it.

  • Will my RAID0 stay intact when I move it to a new computer?

    My primary drive is a 250GB WD SATA drive. So, I added 2x 500GB 7,200 RPM WD SATA drives into my Windows Vista box and created a 1TB RAID0. I then formatted the the primary drive and installed Windows 7. To my pleasant surprise when I booted into Windows 7 my RAID0 was still intact and I kept trotting along the same as I did before. Now I am replacing my motherboard, processor, and RAM and plan on formatting the primary 250GB drive again and using it to boot for a new clean install of Windows 7. My question is: if I move these two SATA drives which are setup for RAID0 into the new system, install Windows 7 again, will the RAID0 remain? Edit: Software RAID. I created it within Windows. The RAID0 does NOT contain the system boot partition.

    I have configured an SBS2011 Server to e-mail me a weekly 'Detailed Network Report' (saw it while configuring a daily e-mailed Back Up report). Within the Report there is lots of info regarding all the Roles on the server (Security, Updates, Back Up etc). Under E-Mail Usage and Mailbox Sizes the following is shown: Now I know these users are sending much more than 1 e-mail a week! So what exactly is this report showing? E-mails within the last 24 hours? How do I go about configuring the Report to show me e-mail statistics for the last week/day/whatever?

  • How can I set deadline as the I/O scheduler for USB Flash devices by using udev rules?

    I have set CFQ as the default I/O scheduler. I often get bad performance when I write data into a Flash device. This is resolved if I use deadline as the I/O scheduler for USB Flash devices. I can't always change the scheduler manually, right? I think writing udev rules is a good idea. Can someone please write rules for me? I want: When I plug in a USB device, detect the type of the device. If it is a portable USB hard disk, do nothing (I think if a device has more than one partitions, it always a portable hard disk. If it is a USB Flash device, set deadline as it's scheduler.

    In order to give my COM+ application enough credentials I want its components to be instantiated under "Local Service" account. When I create a server application with a wizard on Win2k3 it offers to choose under whom to instantiate components - "Local Service" is one of choices. But on WinXP "Local Service" is not offered at all in the wizard. When I open the "Identity" tab of the COM+ application under Win2k3 there'a a handful of choises, "Local Service" included, and I can select any of them. But on WinXP the same "Identity" tab only offers "Interactive user". What does this difference depend on? Does it depend on the system or on something else?

    Hi - I sometimes get that error when resuming from hibernation : Delayed Write Failed : Windows was unable to save all the data for the file G:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. I know this is caused because the hard drive (G:, a usb external drive) which was plugged in when I hibernated was not read at the right moment - or sometimes I simply forgot to plug it when resuming from hibernation. My question is : is there any way to see which particular file/folder/folder status/don't know what failed to be written ? Hard drive functions correctly before and after - no problem. Is there a detailed log someplace or a utility ? Searched and searched but nothing. Thanks for any help !

I was wondering if it's possible to have the PC or notebook or any other computer-like device using a USB-USB cable and make the bluray player detects this as an external drive.   • Make Google Chrome "Application" Windows Use High-Quality Icons in Windows 7

    Whenever I use Google Chrome's "Create Application" shortcut (which I heavily use, and recommend), the icons shown on the Windows 7 taskbar are really blurry, probably the result of the 16x16 favicon being stretched out. I'd like to be able to replace these with another, high-quality icon, but even when I replace the cached file, it doesn't update for some reason. For reference, here's the path to the icon, for Gmail, at least.   • Cannot navigate Microsoft store after app install / update

    Every time i go to the store and install a new app or update an existing one, I go back to the main screen of Store after a few screen refreshes. And then oddly, scrolling doesn't work and neither do the buttons, although the Tiles are fine. I then have to close the app and then re-open it and things are back to normal. I don't know if this is a weird bug or just the way it is. Could anyone please confirm and / or give a possible explanation?

The USB drive is working great, and contains the following: Linux Mint 13 Linux Mint Debian Debian 6 Ubuntu 12.04.1 Fedora 17 A bit of a mix of DVD and Live versions. I have a spindle of DVD+R DL blank DVD's. I would like to create a bootable .iso from this USB drive so I can burn multiple copies of it to pass around to friends! I've created an iso using Folder2ISO, but it coastered my DVD because it wasn't bootable. I don't really want to waste a whole spindle! How would you go about doing such a thing?

  • How do I find the Serial Number of a USB Drive?

    I'm trying to re-enable USB Autoplay in a secure way, by installing a program on each of the computers that I use so that I can run my launcher (PStart in this case) whenever I plug in my specific USB drive. The tool that I'm using to enable this - AutoRunGuard - needs the serial number of the USB drive that I am using. I can't figure out where to find this in Windows. Ideally I would not need to install and run a separate program to do this (seemingly) simple task. Since this is a pretty easy question, bonus points if you also tell me how to discover it in Linux as well. What steps do I need to take to retrieve a USB Drive's serial number? UPDATE: Just incase people come here looking for the answer for AutoRunGuard, I discovered that they don't want the USB device serial number, but the volume serial number. The drive serial can be found by going into the command line, navigating to the drive, and executing dir. The volume serial number is found in the top two lines - use it without the dash.

  • Why sizes are different, and what do they mean?

    I have a 1 TB hard drive that consists of one NTFS partition which I use to back up my data (no operating system). The size of all the data in it is : 726 GB, size on disk: 728 GB, and the used space when I check the properties is: 731 GB. There's a 5 GB difference between the size and the used space. Why is that huge difference there? What's the difference between these sizes? (size, size on disk, and used space) Is there a way to calculate the difference, and be sure the HDD is not messing around? Is that normal?

Ideally, I would like to have the same functionality as gpedit.msc, but it is important that the tasks of adding and removing such scripts do not require user interaction and can be done entirely within the context of a script.   • Windows 7 system CPU bogged by windows services, no explanation

    I'm looking at a laptop for a colleague which is running terribly slow. A quick look showed that the CPU was 100% used by 2-3 SVCHost processes, which off course doesn't tell much since those are just 'cover' processes with services running underneath them. So I fired up process explorer in hopes of finding a shady rogue service which was bogging the system, but to my suprise I found genuine MS Windows processes (or at least damn-good disguised ones) are bogging down the system: dnscache (DNS Client) IKEEXT (IKE and AuthIP IPSec Keyring modules) iphlpsvc (IP Helper) Seen separately, these processes might seem odd to be using a lot of CPU, but taking a step back one can conclude that all three services are quite closely related to networking. I've tried running: netsh int ip reset log.txt which has helped me save bizarre network-related problems in the past, but this didn't help Off course I though about a virus, but both MS Security Essentials as well as malwarebytes (let both run a full scan).

  • TrueCrypt partition will no longer mount

    I am hoping for some advice to help me out of my situation, with luck. I have a computer running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with 3 hard disks installed. On my 2TB hard disk 2 (non-system disk) I have 4 partitions. One is for music, another for video, a downloads partition and a 500GB RAW Truecrypt encrypted partition / volume that I had setup to mount with 4 photographs used as keyfiles. The 4 photographs are located in my 'Documents' partition which is one of four partitions on my 1.5TB hard disk 1 (non-system disk) When I setup the disk encryption I did not (I'm 99% sure) create a password, I only used the 4 photograph keyfiles to mount the volume. Recently my 1TB hard disk 0 (system / boot) started to fail so I decided to replace it. I was going to clone the old disk to a new disk but decided that a fresh installation would be more beneficial. Once I had transferred all the required 'User Data' from my old hard disk 0 (C: disk) I discarded it. I reinstalled Truecrypt, pointed to the partition, selected my 4 keyfiles photographs and I mounted my encrypted volume with no issues. In fact I mounted it several times after re-installing Windows and after reboots. Now all of a sudden when I try and mount it I get the message "incorrect keyfile(s) and/or password or not a Truecrypt volume". Now I am not sure why this happened as I do not recall exactly what I did between last mounting the volume successfully and it not mounting. Here are some of the possible things I may have done to cause it to stop working but I am at a loss as to where to start to try and resolve the problem. 1. I had swapped the drive letters to a preferred order. 2. I possibly swapped the physical SATA connectors on the mainboard. 3. I enabled 'Hot Plugging' for the two non-system hard disk SATA ports and the DVD SATA port in the BIOS. I have tried changing the encrypted partition drive letter as suggested in another post but this does not help. On my old system the encrypted drive was drive "X". I have about tried it with all the other free drive letters but alas nothing changes. I do not recall what drive letter was allocated to the encrypted partition before I changed them all. I have not tried to change the letter back to what it possibly was to start with as I am happy with the current layout. I will try this is anyone thinks it would be worthwhile though. I do hope I have managed to convey my situation in an understandable manner and live in hope someone could help me recover years of personal files.     I can't seem to be able to install Windows 7 64-bit on a 2008 MacBook (64-bit dual core) from an external USB DVD drive. I've done the following: Performed a clean install of Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installed all system updates Run Boot Camp Assistant - when the system restarts I get an error stating "no bootable disc" Used rEFIt, but I still get the same error Made a bootable USB drive from an ISO of the Windows 7 installation disc, but I still get the same error Tried using Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit and Windows XP, but I still get the same error How I can resolve this?
