• BSOD During Windows 7 Install

  I current have a working XP partition a Dell XPS m1330 laptop along with a working Ubuntu partition. After launching the Windows 7 install DVD from within XP I run through the options for a custom install on a free NTFS partition. Everything seemingly works as it should and then my computer restarts. After choosing to boot into the newly created Windows partition I am given the Windows 7 splash screen only to be followed by the BSOD. Here are the stop codes from the BSOD: stop: 0x0000007b (0x80D86B58,0xc0000034,0x00000000,0x0000000) Googling this tells me that it indicates an 'inaccessable boot drive'. Is it possible that its having problems booting from this partition due to the other existing partitions? I'm thinking that there may be a windows recovery CD workaround this but I am not quite proficient in its capabilities. This is what happens when I try to install by booting from the DVD

• Bootmgr is missing for windows xp

  I know that there are so many posts on this subject but none of them worked for me. I have Ubuntu on my machine and I would like to install windows xp. As my cd/dvd reader does not work, I made a bootable usb from iso image using UNETBOOTIN, but when I try to boot in through USB it says "BOOTMGR is Missing". I have searched a lot but could not find any solution to it. Please note that my hard disk uses ext4 format and my bootable drive uses NTFS. I have set the Boot Sequence as USB Drive in BIOS. Please let me know if you need any additional information to fix this. Thanks

  I have been starting up my iMac (Mavericks) with a flash drive that boots up Mountain Lion so that I can use an app that is incompatible with Mavericks. Question: I have a single external backup drive always connected to my Mac. I am thinking of partitioning that drive and giving each partition a unique name, e.g., Backup 1 and Backup 2. I intend then to boot up in Mavericks and tell Time Machine to back up to Backup 1, and then boot up in Mountain Lion and tell Time Machine to back up to Backup 2. Will this work, i.e., will the appropriate partition automatically back up the system in which it is booted?

• Recovering from backup without original install media

  A machine from my old job had a complete hard drive failure. I have backups but I'm running into severe problems restoring from them. The only install media was a secondary restore partition on the system's hard drive. I hate whoever came up with that idea more than i can possibly express with words. I spent several days trying to recover the disk - it is pretty well shot and none of my best tricks could even get it to show up in the bios/ The machine that broke is an hp with xp media center edition on it (I don't know why either). The backups were created using the default windows backup tool - I have .bfk file on an external hardrive that i am trying to restore from. I've replaced the hard drive. My home machine is running windows 7 64bit and i'm trying to use it as a platform to restore to the other disk. I downloaded the window 7 nt-restore utility, however no matter what i do it restores to my C drive rather than the specified drive. Fortunately win7 security settings prevented it from being a complete disaster - but still not a happy thing. I tried firing up the xp virtual machine. I can browse to the backups but it says they are invalid and refuse to let me view/ continue with the restore. I tried installing XP to an extra harddrive on my machine - however it bluescreens on me during the install process and I cry. I tried installing xp pro to the new drive and attempted to restore over it, it of course blackscreened on me as that was a stupid idea. I made two partitions on the new hard drive (Apparently the bios on this accursed piece of junk doesn't allow hd partitions larger than 200G anyways and thus fails 40 minutes into the install with an ever-descriptive "Disk Read Error". Guess how i spent last weekend? My last idea was to install xp pro to the second partition and then use it to restore from backup to the first. After the first restart it gives me the error "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware". My brain made one of those bad hard drive clicky noises. I've tried several boot disks but they don't seem to work. If anyone has a link to a good one it would be greatly appreciated. Anyone have any more ideas? - I really hate asking on what seems like such a simple issue but i am quite literally at my wit's end. • Easiest way to move my Windows installation to an SSD?

  I've taken the plunge and bought an SSD and want to move my existing Windows installation over. The current hard disk is 500Gb, but I've trimmed the contents down to about ~40Gb. I'm transferring it across to a 100Gb SSD and looking for the easiest way just to copy everything across and set the SSD up as a boot device. I've looked at a few tools like Macrium Reflect, but they don't seem able to restore to a smaller drive. Do I need to go for something like PING to do this? I'm trying to avoid scary Linux-based boot utilities if possible, does anyone know of an easier way?

• VirtualBox: Grub sees hard drive, Linux does not

  I installed Linux on my second hard drive. I can boot to it just fine. But when I try to boot it from a Windows 7 host using http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch09.html#rawdisk, grub sees it and can load vmlinuz and initramfs. Log: :: running early hook [udev] :: running hook [udev] :: Triggering uevents... :: running hook [plymouth] :: Loading plymouth...done. ... Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-uuid/{root UUID} ... ERROR: device 'UUID={root UUID}' not found. Skipping fsck. ERROR: Unable to find root device 'UUID={root UUID}' It then drops me into a recovery shell. I checked "/etc/fstab" and it's empty, there are also no sd* devices in dev, the only thing in /dev/disk/by-id is a VBox CD device. I'm not too good with these kinds of things so help would be greatly appriciated.

• Linux cannot see Windows 7 partitions on install

  I've been trying to install Linux as a dual boot with Windows 7 on my Dell latitude e6510. It is currently running Windows 7 and I have used the MS disk tools to shrink the Win 7 NTFS partition to make room for Linux. The issue I'm having is that when I run Linux installers by boot from CD they see the entire hard drive as unallocated space. I have tried Ubuntu 10.10, Kbuntu 10.10 and Fedora 14 and they all have the same problem. I have also tried the Ubuntu "install in Windows" option and could not get it to work. EDIT: Booting Gparted 0.8.0 from a usb drive did not work. It reported the entire drive as unpartitioned.

• Ubuntu 9.10 freezes when HDMI port is connected

  I have a Sony Vaio FW350 with a HDMI output. I'm trying to use it under Ubuntu 9.10 with a LG LCD monitor 21,5'. The laptop has a Intel 4500 video card. I've tried two approaches: Boot the laptop with the HDMI cable connected and monitor turned on. Result: LCD Monitor keeps turned on but the whole screen is black and Ubuntu do not seem to be initializing. Boot Ubuntu until the end. I then connect the HDMI cable into the Laptop. The mouse and the whole system freezes. In both cases the only way to turn off the laptop is holding the power button. I've looked around the internet for similar problems, but only found workarounds for the same problem with VGA input, not HDMI. I also tried to use metacity before connecting the cable, but still got the same result. Any hints?

• Rebuilding RAID1 in Ubuntu

  I had my second HD in my RAID1 come up with bad sectors. So I got another drive and pulled out the bad sector drive and put the new drive in. With the original working RAID1 drive in the computer it failed to boot. I manually copied everything from the old drive over via a Gparted Live CD. Still no booting. Kind of scratching my head here as I can see that both of the drives have data on them but are unable to get either of them to boot. I used a Ubuntu live CD and couldn't even manually mount either of the drives, which I thought was really the odd part. Not sure where to go from here.

  I have tried all alternatives and resources that I found on internet to achieve to change screen resolution in my MacOS X guest. I have the latest VirtualBox version (4.1.22) and I have MacOS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard running in a vm guest. • How to recover data from Dell dimension 9150 RAID 0 on another system?

  I have a Dell Dimension 9150 which has failed. I'm trying to recover the data. It had two SATA 250GB drives in RAID 0 configuration. I'm trying to use a shuttle PC running Windows7 to recover the data from the drives which contained an XP boot volume. I just want the data, it doesn't have to boot. What program would I need to rebuild / interrogate the drives (one of them is failing the onboard hardware test)? What drivers would I need to install? Windows7 sees the drive as one partition but doesn't see volume information. Ubuntu can see the drive as one partition and also can tell what the drive is called, but can't access the data Any help appreciated!! :)

• Raid 5 scsi fault

  I have no much knowledge about servers and I was looking all day around the internet about finding a solution to my raid 5 problem. All of a sudden two disks failed. The server won't boot (HP Proliant, windows 2003 R2, very old maybe 10 years old). I know that if one disk is faulty then I can add a new disk and rebuild it and things will be fine, the problem is two went faulty :( is this normal? two at the same time? is there any other thing I can do and I am not aware of? other than taking them out and reinserting them back? Windows won't boot. The Array menu shows that disks 0 and 4 are "Missing". Any other tricks or things to do? It is important because for some unknown reason the back up job did not work for a month and I just found out, so I need to make these raid 5 back online again.

• JBoss 4.2.3 Won't Start

  Hi, I'm trying to start a new installation of JBoss 4.2.3, and it's getting as far as "INFO [Server] Core system initialized", then hanging for several minutes. There is a Java process running, but only at ~35%. Also, looking at the boot.log, there are no entries after ~1s after starting the boot. Any ideas what might be up? Update: After about 10 minutes, I got a handful of garbage collection warnings: GC Warning: Repeated allocation of very large block (appr. size 512000): May lead to memory leak and poor performance.

And end up with the flash drive that is partitioned. 2 partitions just like the virtual box hard disk. What do I do to restore it. I'm running acronis inside virtual box.   I have the Windows 8 32-bit ISO which fails to install when booted from a USB flash drive. It copies the files, the boot loader installs, but the install hangs when I boot into Windows 8 for the first time--it simply keeps on spinning forever. The Windows 8 Release Preview does not work either. I did a VHD install of Windows 8 Developer Preview and it installed fine. Looking at the partition from Windows 7, I can see that the files are present. What could be the problem?

  My girlfriend's Acer Aspire One netbook just crashed running Windows XP. It crashes at the boot process, displays the blue screen for a second and then reboots. I also installed Jolicloud through Jolicloud Express but I am not able to boot it either. I suspect it's a virus... When running a Ubuntu live session from a pendrive it seems like the Acer partition is corrupted. In a partition program it says to run chkdsk in Windows to fix it. Thus, if you simply copy one of these images raw to a USB stick a normal PC BIOS will boot the image directly. (...) So I want to: break the RAID move C: and D: to one of the drives (there's enough room) use the other drive for Win 7 boot into one or the other Clearly I can't move C: and D: after breaking the RAID, so I'm assuming I need to image the two partitions first, then break the RAID and restore the images to one of the drives. So my questions are: Is this possible? If so, what would be a good (free) imaging/restore tool? How do I ensure that the drive will boot after restoring the images?   I'm trying to start a service that depends on networking being started, whenever the computer is rebooted. I have a few questions: Is this easily possible from an /etc/init.d script? I have tried creating a script here (conforming to the standards), but I'm really doubtful that it's even running on boot, let alone working. When I test it manually, it works. I've seen the new Upstart service, but as far as how that actually works, I'm completely in the dark. How can I make a script that runs on boot which runs after networking has been started? If I could run it after connected to wireless network, even better :)

  My question is how to convert a pre-created OpenVZ OS template which are in tar.gz format (such as these) to an image file in order to be able boot it with other virtualization solutions such as QEMU or VirtualBox. In order to achieve this, I made an empty image file, I partitioned it, and made two partition, a primary partition and a extended partition for swap. I made the first partition ext3 (0x83) and the other one swap (0x82). Then I made the first one bootable, and copied the content of tar.gz to the first partition. But when I try to boot, it hangs at the first stage of booting.

• Trouble loading an ISO

  I've created a boot disk and ISO image with paragon. I boot up the Virtual pc with the disk in and I get to my recovery page. When I am supposed to select an ISO image? My Virtual PC doesn't acknowledge any of my physical hard drives on my host PC. I've also tried copy/paste the files into my datastore and they do not show up. I've tried the option during the set up to start with the ISO but again I am not able to browse to my external hard drive that I have stored the ISO on. VMWare will acknowledge it and say that it is connected but I can't browse to it. Am I doing something wrong? I created the back up disk and ISO image on the external with paragon.
