• SharePoint 2010 MySites - Host on separate servers

  We're playing with the SP 2010 Beta ahead of a planned deployment later this year in an academic environment. We anticipate that the majority of traffic will be through MySites when everything is provisioned so we're looking at how we can plan our SP topology to scale nicely. An initial thought is to run the main portal on one server, host "Student" MySites on one server and "Staff" on another. Is it acutally possible to do this easily or are we going down a bad path? Specifically - can we have 2 different MySites site collections, each hosted on a dedicated server? If so, can we configure SharePoint to work out from the users's logon account type of user they are and route them to the correct server?

• How do I assign a MBP's Mission Control button (F3) for use in Windows 7?

  I have a recent Mac Book Pro that I triple boot (OS X, Win7, BT5). I'd like to use the Mission Control button (F3) in Windows 7 on my MBP to call Dexpot's "Windows Catalog." Does anyone know of: 1) A setting in Windows (Registry adjustment, etc) that I could assign for this to work? 2) A setting in Dexpot that would configure this? 3) A piece of software that does this? My preference for the answer is in the order above. If I get multiple answers, the one that works, that is posted first, that does what 1) states, gets selected. If 1) won't work, I'll select from answers to 2), etc...

• IPTables: allow SSH access only, nothing else in or out

  How do you configure IPTables so that it will only allow SSH in, and allow no other traffic in or out? Any safety precautions anyone can recommend? I have a server that I believe has been migrated away from GoDaddy successfully and I believe is no longer in use. But I want to make sure just because ... you never know. :) Note that this is a virtual dedicated server from GoDaddy... That means no backup and virtually no support.

• How can I make Bash (or Zsh) run a particular command before each entered command?

  I'd like to configure Bash to run a particular command before running each command line I enter at the prompt. Specifically, I'd like to tell Vim (which is running in another terminal) to write all open buffers, because in my workflow if anything's unsaved when I leave Vim it's a mistake. Is there an option for this in Bash? If not, is there an option in Zsh? (There is a readline-based solution that somewhat fits this problem on another question, but it feels a bit hacky. It'll take it as a last resort.)

• snmptrap and snmptt - authcommunity not found

  I am trying to configure snmptt to translate the snmp traps received and handle them as passive checks in icinga monitoring server as described here . after doing the changes to the snmptrapd.conf . I am trying to restart the service and I see authcommunity : command not found, traphandle : command not found . my understanding is the authcommunity and traphandle are just configuration directives which will tell snmptrapd about the community string to use and the traphandle script to be called. It would be helpful if someone can help me understand better. Thanks, sabs

• Can not join comp to the domain... greyed out

  I have an old WinXP Pro SP3 computer I need to join to the domain, simple right? not really. When I go to control panel - system - computer name and click on CHANGE ("rename this computer") everything is greyed out. I can not set it from workgroup to a domain. I am logged on locally as an admin. (Builtin account and one I created) I have checked local policy (gpedit.msc) on the comp, but it feels like a needle in the haystack. I could probably reload an image faster than trying to fix this...but I am curious so I post here to see if anyone knows of it/fix.   I'm attempting to implement cross-domain HTTP access control without touching any code. I've got my Apache(2) server returning the correct Access Control headers with this block: Header set Access-Control-Allow-Origin "*" Header set Access-Control-Allow-Methods "POST, GET, OPTIONS" I now need to prevent Apache from executing my code when the browser sends a HTTP OPTIONS request (it's stored in the REQUEST_METHOD environment variable), returning 200 OK. How can I configure Apache to respond "200 OK" when the request method is OPTIONS? I've tried this mod_rewrite block, but the Access Control headers are lost.   Here is my IPCONFIG /ALL from the host (Windows 7 64-bit): Here is my IFCONFIG from the guest (Ubuntu 10.04): To be honest, I don't have experience configuring a network between a host and a guest in VMWare (a virtual machine). I've searched high and low on the internet, but I haven't seen anything that can help. Perhaps I'm just not using the right keywords when I search. Nevertheless, does anyone here have any experience with establishing a network connection? Edit: One important note. I don't use DHCP to provide private addresses to the hosts on my LAN. I use "static" IP addresses on my internal network by configuring each IP address manually in the host's network configuration utility (I have TV's, XBOX 360, and a few PC's). I would like to configure the IP on the virtual machine guest manually as well. The reason is because my XBOX 360 only works properly using a static IP address. It will kick me off XBOX Live if it has one given by the router (via DHCP).

• Sharing / replicating EBS across AWS nodes

  I would like to use single EBS storage across multiple EC2 nodes (web/app servers). I've read some articles on snapshot sharing, but that doesn't suit well for what we need. We use filesystem for storing DB record attachments, so if one such attachment gets created, we need it to be immediately available to all nodes (to serve). So far only NFS seem to be viable, but it's a pain to configure and maintain. Another option could be storing those attachments on S3 instead, but that would cut us of doing any analysis on that data. This must be quite common problem when scaling in AWS, what solutions are there?

• iTunes Home Sharing with VPN

  I'm trying to set up a VPN on a Windows machine that contains my iTunes library, then connect my iPhone ot it, wirelessly, using Home Sharing (remotly). I have read that this can easily be set up if the iTunes library is on a Mac (Network Beacon and YazSoft ShareTool are two products I found). I can't find anyone who has had success on a Windows machine, though. In my thinking, there are a few options to getting this done. Find a utility that takes care of this for me (like the Mac-only options listed above) and is compatible with iPhone (Hamachi is NOT compatible with iPhone VPN). Manually configure a VPN to allow Bonjour multicast (I'm not sure what this really is...) Emulate a Mac on my Windows PC.   My monit script works to detect an outage with a process and inform me when the rule is: IF DOES NOT EXIST THEN ALERT My monit script works to detect an outage and automatically fix it when the rule is: IF DOES NOT EXIST THEN START But, what I want it to do is inform me AND fix it. Two rules in a row seems to make it ignore all but the last: IF DOES NOT EXIST THEN ALERT IF DOES NOT EXIST THEN START # No alert given. I could use a custom script that does both, and IF DOES NOT EXIST THEN EXEC "my_handwritten_script" but I was trying to move away from a mess of hand-written scripts towards a clean Monit configuration. Can I configure Monit to take two actions?

• Windows Vista Backups?

  I am trying to configure a Windows Backup on Vista but don't see some capabilities I would expect to be there. For one, it looks like I can only select a Local Drive or a network share. I want to use a local drive, but I want to use a sub folder of one of the drives. Must I really pick the root? As a work-around, I made a network share to the local drive, thinking I could then pick network share. However, when I do this, I am prompted for credentials to hit the share, and none work. However, the share works Explorer, and it works from other computers, so the access is configured correctly. Is there any way to do what I am trying to do? Thanks.

  I would like to know if it is possible (and if so, how) to configure a router running dd-wrt (or openwrt) to supply connected devices with two ip addresses. The network looks like this: [Internet] | [Router] | | [Comp1] [Comp2] ... My ISP provides me with enough public IP adresses to give all devices on my network one each. The easiest way to set that up is to just use the router as a switch. This will however lead to problems with some LAN based applications. I would still like to use Samba-shares between the computers as well as a vpn server. What I am looking for basically is if it is possible to use the router as a DHCP server for a local network (let's say giving IP adresses 192.168.1.xx to connected computers) while at the same time passing through public IP addresses to each as well?

• How to change the computer name on a server configured by Puppet

  I am new to Puppet and I'm trying to get Puppet to configure my EC2 instances after they're started from a Cloud Formation Template in AWS. The problem is that all the nodes that get started from the Cloud Formation Template all have the same name (the name from the AMI that the new nodes derive from). I would love to find a way to have puppet rename the nodes when the nodes start up. (although, as far as I know, a Computer Name change requires reboot, a separate issue...) If you can point me to some documentation that can help me figure this out or if you have any ideas that would be great. My ultimate goal is to have each EC2 start with a unique name so that I can use New Relic server monitoring to report the different servers.

• Start TLS and 389 Directory

  I'm trying to configure Start TLS on 389 Directory server, but I'm having all sorts of issues. I've been following this doc: https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Directory_Server/9.0/html/Administration_Guide/managing-certs.html which specifies that I should create a certificate for both the directory server and admin server. I've imported the CA cert on both servers. I've tried to use the same server certificate for both. It will not allow me to do so. However, the admin and directory servers reside on the same host. If I generate a new certificate it will need to use the same hostname. I'm not sure if that's valid... Has anyone out there set this up before? Any direction would be helpful. I have multmaster replication set up. From an external client, I'm attempting to do an ldapsearch -ZZ -x -h "myhost" -b "dc=example,dc=com" -D "cn=Directory Manager" -W "", and I'm getting a protocol error.

• Automatically Connecting to Hidden SSID WiFi Network

  My MacBook Pro will not automatically connect to a Wireless network with a hidden SSID. It makes me select the "Join Other Network..." in the Airport menu (in the system tray), where I need to input the name of the network, then security type, password and wait for it to connect. This is becoming increasingly annoying to have to do every time I come back to my desk. I'm running Mac OS X 10.5 and there doesn't seem to be an option to connect to a specific network, but rather "Preferred Networks." The only network I have set as Preferred that's in range is my home network, and it still doesn't automatically connect. Making the network publicly visible isn't under my control, so I'm stuck with what's currently in place.   I installed Ubuntu in a VM using VirtualBox, and after a few hours of Googling all the things I had to install and configure for the rest of the environment, I am finally up and running with a Ruby on Rails IDE and have MySql up and running. After I start up the Ubuntu VM, I have to go to a terminal window and do this to start MySql: /etc/init.d/mysql start So that works fine, but, since I am such a GUI person, I’m wondering how I can create an icon on the Ubuntu Desktop that I can click on to launch this command. Can you tell me how to do that?

• If I let Google handle my emails for my domain, my Wordpress site won't send out emails anymore

  Since I decided to let Google handle all my emails for my domain, while the domain is hosted on a 3rd party server, emails send out by a Wordpress installation no longer work. My supposition is that since all email is being routed to Google, my specific account on that server for that domain is unable to send out emails. I definitely wish to keep using google services for handling my emails since it comes with all the advantages connected to a Google account. However I need my Wordpress installation to send out administrative emails. I run my server with CPanel. How to configure that specific account and/or Wordpress to keep it able to send out emails? I don't need people to answer these emails sent out from server (eventually I might set a reply-to-address perhaps) thanks

  I am working on email server, since i tried several times to create email server on ubuntu12.04LTS with postfix + dovecote + postfixadmin + courier + clamav + spamassassin. But everytime i install these packages i face new problems, like mails send to localhost users and found in users maildir. But I can't determine how to configure/setup for send an email to external smtp like gmail, yahoo. The most worst thing i can't determine how to use sasl, because i am not using SSL so it is not worthy for my domain. • Authentication error in LTSP client

  I am building a LTSP server with LDAP authentication for LTSP Clients. I have configured LDAP server also. When I try to login from LTSP client in GUI, I am getting No response from server, restarting. Then, It's restarting the GUI and comes to the login screen again. I thought that there could be a problem with LDAP authentication. But, When I try to login from Alt+Ctrl+F1 terminal in LTSP client, it is logged in successfully with LDAP user. LDAP Server and authentication is working fine. Even, after executing the below commands, still I am getting the same error. ltsp-update-sshkeys ltsp-update-kernels ltsp-update-image --arch i386 Whether I need to configure anything for GUI login from LTSP Client? How to fix this issue?

  I'm trying to figure out how exactly works the RAID 10 in linux with mdadm. I want to create a RAID 10 out of 4 partitions, let's say a, b, c and d. a and b are on the array 1, c and d array 2. So what I want is to have the couple a and b, c and d in RAID 0. Then on top of that, a RAID 1. The option in the mdadm command to configure the layout is -p, --layout with option : near, far, offset see here I want to keep my data safe if the array 1 fails for example, that would mean that every chunk of data are always copied on both arrays. How do I have to set my RAID 10, near or far ?

• innodb memory usage mysql

  I have a small vps, with only 256mb of ram, with maximum burst up to 512mb. When I configure my vps without innodb, it only uses 130 mb of ram, so that is no problem for me. But when I turn on innodb, The memory usage grows to about 300-400 mb. Is it possible to run innodb such that I won't exceed the 256mb? preferably I don't want to use more than 100mb for innodb. I already came across some sites which said I could limit the memory usage, but if I limit it to only 100mb will the db run well enough? (compared to for example the MyISAM storage engine) If 100mb is to little memory for innodb, can you recommend me any other storage engine which supports transactions?
