• Desktop goes blurry / granulated

  After few minutes using, desktop and fonts in unity-menu goes blurry. See screenshot.! In all applications (browser etc.) graphics seem to be allright. After rebooting problem disappears for few minutes. Changing the wallpaper also makes the desktop clear (for a while) but fonts are still blurry. • wireless blocked after installing ubuntu 12.04

  I am using a lenovo S10-3 ideapad; had no problems with earlier version of ubuntu, only since installing 12.04. Have looked through many of the questions on the same issue and tried potential solutions but cannot seem to solve my problem. The hardware switch is in 'on' position and the wireless light comes on very briefly (2-3 sec) when the laptop starts up but then goes off and stays off. Pressing FN+F5 does nothing at all. I'd be grateful for any assistance.   I'm looking for a tool like Canonical (system management and monitoring for Ubuntu) that is Open Source and free. The goal is to manage a dozen or so KVM machines for private testing purposes. I know of puppet and munin or RHQ as separate tools to manage and monitor, but I'd prefer something integrated. Any tips? Basic requirements would be: system package management and update (individual selection for each managed node) configuration of basic system services (Users, NFS, cron, ideally also Apache) monitoring (charting of system resources, disk, io, memory, etc) and alerting, ideally a default configuration with sensible values for alerts

• Low Graphics and laggy screen after update to 13.10 from 13.04

  After updating from 13.04 to 13.10 many of 3D unity stuff has stopped working, I am suing Samsung Series 3 (NP350V5X) Laptop which has Switchable Intel and AMD Radeon HD 7670M GFX. xserver-xorg-video-ati does works but NO 3D support and graphics are very low. • Set up Gmail with Google apps for own domain

  I rent a server from a German company. I have remote access to it as well as WHM and CPanel. I decided to use Google's mail servers for obvious reasons. I am not an admin just an average guy trying to set up what needs to be set up. The problem is I am unable to make the necessary settings. I watched Youtube tutorials, followed written ones as well as Google's help, but there is (at least) one serious problem with my domain settings. The domain console alwasy says Your MX records are incorrect When I check dappwall.com in mxtoolbox.com it says Pref Hostname IP Address TTL 10 mail.dappwall.com 46.4.88.247 24 hrs But this is not the host name. I checked WHM and my hostname is server1.dappwall.com. I can confirm it by typing the hostname command in putty. However, if I do an mx lookup at mxtoolbox.com on server1.dappwall.com or mail.dappwall.com I get Lookup failed after 1 name servers timed out or responded non-authoritatively I ran checks on the google apps toolbox on dappwall.com and two problems emerged: 1.No Google mail exchangers found. Relayhost configuration? 10 mail.dappwall.com In Google Apps > Settings for Gmail > Advanced settings it also says that my current MX records for dappwall.com is Priority Points to 10 MAIL.DAPPWALL.COM. So mail.dappwall.com again. I also have access to a robot provided by the company I rent the server from. Here I see this mail at two places but how should I (if it's necessary) modify this? I set Email routing to Automatically Detect Configuration. 2.There SHOULD be a valid SPF record. "v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all" In the DNS Zone Editor I added this spf record: Name TTL Class Type Record dappwall.com. 1440 IN TXT v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all In the cPanel Email Authentication page it says SPF: Status: Enabled Warning: cPanel is unable to verify that this server is an authoritative nameserver for dappwall.com. [?] Your current raw SPF record is : v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all How can I confirm that my server is an authoritative nameserver for dappwall.com? In WHM Service Configuration Mailserver selection Dovecot was set but I disabled it (i don't know if that's ok). What am I missing here? Where is that mail.dappwall.com coming from?

• Authentication issues setting up iRedMail on Debian

  I'm setting up an exchange server using iRedMail. Following the official iRedMail installation guide (http://www.iredmail.org/install_iredmail_on_debian.html) and the Digital Ocean guide (https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-install-iredmail-on-ubuntu-12-04-x64) I was able to install iRedMail without any problems, so I have all the services up and running. I can configure domains and emails using iRedAdmin BUT I have problem both sending and receiving email, what I get from Roundcube is 'Authentication error' when trying to send an email. Also I can't receive anything. I also tried to connect to the mx server using telnet, it connects, but after the STARTTLS command, when I start to write "MAIL FROM:" the connection is lost. Something in the configuration is not working (at the moment I have the configuration written by the iRedMail installation) but I do not know where, I hope someone can enlight me! Thank you

  Let's say you're trying to get a CMS up and going. And say you're supposed to find a Start Page at "www.yourdomain.com/start" But you don't have a domain name yet. You only have an IP address (yourIPaddress). Apache is visibly running at yourIPaddress. So you look in "yourIPaddress/start" And you don't find anything there, just a 404 page. And the person who installed it for you tells you: "In Apache, yourdomain/start is not the same thing as yourIP/start. Please read up on Apache server configuration to figure this out. And that's all the help I can give." My question is: what concepts (re: Apache configuration) should I read up on so that I can find the start page? Thoughts?

  I have two web servers behind a F5 load balancer. Each web server has identical applications to the other. There was no issue until the config of the load balancer changed from source address persistence to least connections. Now in some applications I receieve this error Server Error in '/' Application. Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.Web.HttpException: Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster. • VMware ESX 3.5 Host Health shown as unknown

  I have an ESX 3.5 update 5 cluster of five host servers, all fully patched as of this Friday. Today I noticed that one of the servers has the Hardware Health status as unknown in Virtual Center Infrastructure Client. When I look at the Health Status view under configuration for that host, all the items are status Unknown. The server is exactly the same configuration as the others - same model (HP DL360 G5), memory, NICs etc. I have tried restarting the management service with service mgmt-vmware restart but this has not resolved the issue. Asides from this, I am not seeing any issues with the cluster - however, I hate having a blind spot like this. Any ideas?

  We are deploying my web application in my system in jboss. And I am planning to use my system as the server as well. There are no html pages or jsp pages deployed. The client requests for resources and the server provides the resources in the form of objects. We are also using databases(Postgresql-15 tables) as the database server(this will also reside in my machine). My system configuration is Windows Vista, 2.3 GHZ, 4GB Ram, 32 bit. There can be many requests coming in at the same time. So is this configuration enough? Should we go with a different Operating System like Windows Server? I have never used Windows Server OS. How will it be different from other windows operating systems? Or if you feel please some other OS will be good in this situation, please suggest.

• Custom LightDM sessions to launch an application

  I'm trying to set up Ubuntu to act as a kiosk running a custom application, and am trying to get a LightDM session built to automatically start it. Ideally, I'd like to have two sessions available from LightDM. The default would start my application fullscreened, and the other would open a minimal desktop in case any configuration (mostly connecting to a wireless network) needed to be done. I've done a lot of research over the last week on custom LightDM & Gnome sessions. I've got a custom greeter written for LightDM that can start either session, but I can't figure out how to add a specific application to the Gnome session that is ultimately started without just putting a launcher in the global startup directory, and I don't want to do that since I don't want the application starting when they open "configuration mode". Another problem I've run into on my current workaround is that the application doesn't fullscreen properly, which makes me think I'm not starting enough of a gnome session (currently it's just metacity, no panel or anything else).   I have a very basic question regarding to Puppet 3.0.1 configuration. I setup a puppet master server (CentOS) with 2 agents (CentOS and Windows 7), all 3 can ping and access each other. There is no error at all. I have copied a file under /etc/puppet/files/test2.txt my site.pp (/etc/puppet/manifests) contains these lines: node default { include test file { "/tmp/testmaster.txt": owner => root, group => root, mode => 644, source => "puppet:///files/test2.txt" } } but there will no file be created on agent servers under /tmp/ once I run "puppet agent --test" here is the output: [root@agent1 ~]# puppet agent --test Info: Retrieving plugin Info: Caching catalog for agent1.mydomain.com Info: Applying configuration version '1354267916' Finished catalog run in 0.02 seconds "puppet apply /etc/puppet/manifests/site.pp" creates the testmaster.txt under /tmp/ on master.

• 3 screens on W500 + ATI V5700 + docking station

  I've got Lenovo W500 with D-SUB and DVI ports. Most of the time I work with a docking station which has D-SUB and DVI ports, as well. I used to have laptop + 22" monitor (DVI) configuration. Now I've got laptop + 22" (DVI) + 19" (D-SUB). I was trying to configure everythin but with no success. I've got ATI V5700 in my laptop. And my ATI CCC allows me to only have one external monitor attached at the time. :( Is there any workaround to this situation? I'd like to have the configuration I've just descripted: laptop + 22" (DVI) + 19" (D-SUB).

• Cannot view, use, or open CDs or DVDs in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am fairly new to Ubuntu 12.04 and I have encountered a rather irritating problem. Whenever I insert a CD or DVD (whether it have data, music, movies, or nothing at all), nothing pops up saying "you have inserted a CD", "play with Rhythmbox?" etc. It doesn't show the CD in the launcher/dock or anything of the sort. This is especially peculiar because not only do I have a standard IDE built-in optical drive, but I have an external USB optical drive. Neither work. In addition, whenever I go to "Computer///" and I click (double click, right click, or even left click) on "CD/DVD Drive" nothing happens, when I right click and select "Open" nothing happens either [for either of the two drives (both are listed in Computer///)] And if I insert a blank disk and go to a disk burning program such as Brasero, and try to burn to the drive it detects no CDs or DVDs of any kind. • mod_rewrite and SEO friendliness

  My website has an atypical structure and I'm not sure if this could create problems in the long run, specially for SEO positioning purposes. I have a unique, large PHP script, and I use the Apache module mod_rewrite in the .htaccess file to create friendly URLs, for example: RewriteRule ^$ /index.php?section=Main RewriteRule ^createArticle$ /index.php?section=Main&view=CreateArticle RewriteRule ^configuration$ /index.php?section=Configuration RewriteRule ^article/([0-9]{1,10})$ /index.php?section=Article&view=Default&id=$1 RewriteRule ^deleteArticle/([0-9]{1,10})$ /index.php?section=Article&view=Delete&id=$1 RewriteRule ^reportArticle/([0-9]{1,10})$ /index.php?section=Article&view=Report&id=$1 RewriteRule ^logIn$ /index.php?section=Authentication ... So, www.example.com/index.php?section=Article&view=Default&id=105 would become www.example.com/article/105. The only real physical file is index.php, in which the parameters of the URL queried is processed and the corresponding result is outputted. My question is, do the crawling robots (e.g. Googlebot) recognize these links? Do they index the resulting HTML outputted by index.php with the specified parameters as if it was a actual HTML file? Also, would this become a problem when creating a Sitemap?

• If your algorithm is correct, does it matter how long it took you to write it?

  I recently found out that Facebook had a programming challenge that if completed correctly you automatically get a phone interview. There is a sample challenge that asks you to write an algorithm that can solve a Tower of Hanoi type problem. Given a number of pegs and discs, an initial and final configuration; Your algorithm must determine the fewest steps possible to get to the final configuration and output the steps. This sample challenge gives you a 45 minute time limit but allows you to still test your code to see if it passes once your time limit expires. I did not know of any cute math solution that could solve it, and I didn't want to look for one since I think that would be cheating. So I tried to solve the challenge the best I could on my own. I was able to make an algorithm that worked and passed. However, it took me over 4 hours to make, much longer than the 45 minute requirement. Since it took me so much longer than the allotted time, I have not attempted the actual challenge. This got me wondering though, in reality does it really matter that it took me that long? I mean is this a sign that I will not be able to get a job at a place like this (not just Facebook, but Google, Fog Creek, etc.) and need to lower my aspirations, or does the fact that I actually passed on my first attempt even though it took too long be taken as good?

• How can I join two simple home networks together using an ethernet cable?

  I want to join two different home networks together like so: PC A1 PC A2 PC B1 PC B2 \ / \ / Gateway A <----- ethr. cable -----> Gateway B | | ADSL modem A ADSL modem B Both networks are of the basic residential type with identical configuration, with all PCs running Vista/7. The point is to temporarily join two apartments in a building for gaming and file sharing, and the holy grail would be: PCs on network A can access PCs on network B and vice-versa (file shares and gaming). Each network uses its own internet connection. Data between networks shouldn't take a trip through the internet (broadband upload speeds are severely capped) A network's internet access should continue working if the joining cable is disconnected with minimal configuration changes. How closely can this be achieved?

• Working with Active Directory and Windows Small Business Server 2008

  I have to say that in most of my time as a network engineer I have had the opportunity to play with servers, but mostly it's been to put our management software on, and that was about it. I have been a Systems Network Engineer for about three months now, and as such I have been respnosible for the configuration of our test devices... this being said, I have had to start working through how to configure and apply such things as GPO through a new forest, domain and OU. This being said I have configured about three different GPO's and applied them to different locations. The first laptop that I brought into the domain took the default Domain group Policy... this was cool, I got excited... then When I tried to bring in the second Laptop, it didn't take the policy. I looked at the configuration, and the default domain policy was applied to domain computers, however since the laptop resides in the SBS Computers of the OU that was created, SBS created individual policies for XP and Vista for that OU, which I was unaware of. So the default policy for that ou overrode the domain policy and none of the options that were defined in the Domain policy were applied... this being said, I am now working on putting the default Domain as an applicable policy in the OU, thus I won't have to reconfigure another policy to mirror the Domain Policy... here goes nothing!!!....
