• AT&T U-verse 2Wire Router - Increase session table limit?

  AT&T U-verse VDSL "fiber to the node" 24Mbit down / 3Mbit up 2Wire Router Model 3800HGV-B Software Version 6.1.9.24-enh.tm The 2Wire router appears to have a limit of 1024 TCP and UDP sessions. This limit appears to apply to all sessions regardless of any static IP, firewall off, DMZ plus, secondary router configurations. I've tried using the 2Wire router alone and also configuring the 2Wire static IP addressing, firewall off, DMZ plus, etc. setup along with my own pfSense router/firewall. Either way it appears I exceed the 1024 session limit and sessions start being reset. Running out of sessions isn't being caused by torrents or p2p etc. We're a business and our legitimate uses are exceeding this session limit. AT&T tells me it's not possible to bridge the router or increase or avoid the session table limit. I'm curious if anyone has found a way around either of these issues.

• Problems with login scripts on Terminal Server 2008

  We are having issues with login scripts not running on Windows 2008 Terminal Server. This is a brand new implementation and they have never worked. The test user in question doesn't have any problems running login scripts on their workstation. I have tried logging into the server directly with their account, but still no scripts run. I have setup a test account with Domain Admins rights in the same OU as theirs and the scripts don't run. I can manually run the scripts from the SYSVOL\somedomain.com\Policies folder and they run fine. The Terminal 2008 Server is in a mixed 2003/2008 domain. The user can run the gpupdate on the server without error. I have also run the Group Policy Results for this user and the terminal server and everything looks good, no errors. Any suggestions?

• Linux SW Raid: whole disk or per-partition?

  I have inherited a machine which has 2 physical disks and uses Linux SW RAID(1). Both disks are partitioned and are are all individual arrays (/dev/md0, /dev/md6, etc.). Those arrays are then mounted (/boot, /home, etc. even /tmp). As RAID is designed to mitigate physical failures, is there any reason why one would use this technique over whole-disk arrays that are then partitioned (perhaps using LVM)? This seems prone to more potential issues, but may have some special properties that I haven't been able to glean. I'm planning on moving this setup to: disks?SWRAID(1)?LVM as I'll be making multiple VMs out of the one machine, but wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing when I got rid of the old setup.

• Ubuntu 12.04 transmission-daemon and zfsonlinux: bad file descriptor and corrupt pieces

  I'm running a Ubuntu 12.04 with zfsonlinux and transmission-daemon. The issues: sporadic Bad File Descriptor and Piece #xxx is corrupt errors. After I recheck the torrent, everything seems fine. That happens only when downloading: once it's in seeding mode. This only happens after the torrent client has been running for some time. I installed zfsonlinux from the offical stable ppa (https://launchpad.net/~zfs-native/+archive/stable). I previously tried running transmission-daemon from the Ubuntu repository, but since I've switched to building the latest transmission from source with the latest libevent (all stable) - same thing. I've seen bug reports (https://trac.transmissionbt.com/ticket/4147) for that issue, but none of them seem to have a solution. How can I fix these errors, or at least understand where they come from and what I can do to rectify the issue?

• Increasing System Menu Font Size for OS X Lion

  My father-in-law recently picked up an iMac (with OS X 10.7 - Lion) and loves it. However, his eyesight isn't that great and would like to find a way to increase the font size of the system menu bar like he could on his old Windows system. I've been unable to find anything in the system configuration that might work. I've heard that the TinkerTool might be able to do it, but I'm a little hesitant to monkey around with his system - I don't want to introduce system stability issues. Question: Has anyone been able to find any good way to increase the system menu font size?

• SQL Server 2008 Install fails error reading etwcls.mof

  I receive the following error when trying to install Sql Server 2008 Standard on a Windows Server 2008 box. Error reading from file D:\x64\setup\sql_engine_core_inst_msi\PFiles\SqlServr\MSSQL.X\MSSQL\Binn\etwcls.mof. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it. When searching the interwebs I only find information about compiling this file but not reading. The file exists in the location requested. I have run the WMIDiag tool and there doesn't seem to be any issues. I am not sure what else I can do to solve this issue and can't seem to find anything on the internet about it. • Oracle Installation issue on Oracle Linux 6.4

  I am trying to install Oracle 11g(11.2.0.1.0) on Oracle Linux 6.4(Remote Server). I get the following error(s) when Database Configuration Assistant is running ORA-01092: ORACLE instance terminated Disconnection forced ORA-48210: Relation Not Found Can someone help me regarding this errors, I cant seem to find what exactly that I have to do to solve this issue. I have done the same install on Oracle Linux 5.7 but never faced this issue before. The only problem while installing(which happens on 5.7 too) is that the required packages fail, but upon checking, it seems much higher versions are already installed. Also I cant do a yum update because the system seems to have connectivity issues with public-yum.oracle.com as I cant ping it(even though the IP Address gets resolved)

  A document was shared with me, enabling me to edit it. However, whenever I open it, it only lets me view it, and anytime I try to open the "Open with Google Docs" tab, it acts as if I never pressed it, same as if I try to download it. Same with whenever I try to create a new document. I'll click "Create" and then "Document" and it won't be registered. I really need these issues fixed pronto, as I have to use this software every day. Please help!!

• Reverse DNS does not match SMTP banner vs Reverse DNS mismatch

  I have to make decision whether my Reverse DNS should match SMTP banner but Reverse DNS to DNS and vice versa stays different or vice versa. Which one to choose? I have an 2x Exchange 2010 server with one SMTP Sender with TMG 2010. TMG has 2 links connected so that we have 2 separate internet providers. The problem is I have no way to control TMG behavior on which link is used to send emails as it picks it randomly. I have 2 MX records: - mail.test.com which resolves to IP and IP resolves to mail.test.com - mail2.test.com which resolves to IP2 and IP2 resolves to mail.test.com This was done to prevent smtp banner issues but it provides problems with Reverse DNS if the server on the other side is eager enough to do comparison. But I've checked with Google and they also don't have that in perfect condition.

• Troubleshooting server performance with a hosted server?

  We are in a tough spot, we have a hosted server with the following specs: OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 64bit Processor: Intel Xeon X7550 @ 2GHz (8 processors) RAM: 16GB The file system is on a SAN or NAS (not sure). We are seeing very odd issues where a user will open a 25MB .xslb file and it takes literally 60-120 seconds sometimes. The server is just dog slow for excel. Resources are not being pegged, CPU never jumps up, plenty of RAM... it's just oddly slow. Our host has been looking at the issue for several weeks with not much to show for it. Is there a utility I can run myself that will help trackdown our issue? I have found Server Performance Advisor V1.0 Any experience in using it? Our host is ultimately responsible for fixing this, but we are going on 1 month and our users are losing patience. Any tips would be helpful.

• NX Client running on OS X 10.6.3 => NX Server Ubuntu 10.04: weird keymapping issue

  I have been using Ubuntu 9.10 at work after switching from vista. After being (expectedly) disappointed with performance over VNC (via VPN) when logging in from home, I came across the NOMACHINE suite. Last week, I upgraded from OS X 10.6.2 = 10.6.3 at home. After that, I also updated my NX Client at home to the latest version, as there were issues with recent changes in the OSX X11 setup that rendered the NX connection useless. At that point, everything worked fine. Fast forward, I upgraded from 9.10 = 10.04 on my work machine the next day, and after coming home and trying to log-in remotely, I noticed that the "s" and "m" keys, when pressed locally, acted as if the meta key was being pressed on the remote machine. That is, the "s" key opens in the Ubuntu login menu (the power icon), and the "m" key opens the messaging menu. I found some info on using xmodmap to remap keys, however, I can't even begin to fathom what keys I could remap to solve this issue. Any ideas?

• New installation - Win 7 or directly Win 8?

  My laptop's hard disk is gone, so I need to re-install my Windows. Would it be a good idea to directly install Win8 (so actually the preview). Is there any known incompatibility with Win7 which would be a show stopper? I have a Dell XPS laptop, I do not expect any driver issues since the series is pretty much mainstream. Would the Win8 preview become Win8 RTM automatically by updates, or would I need to re-install Win8 RTM. This would be the no-go for me. The Win8 preview does not require a key, so I guess it becomes Win 8 RTM and then needs to be activated (which is what I want). Basically the idea is, I have to install windows anyway, so why not using the latest version?

• Duplicate IP address detection with multiple NICs

  I am using arping -D to detect duplicate IP addresses within a network when setting up servers. (The network is controlled by someone else, and we have had many issues with IP allocation in the past.) It works fine as long as my host has a single NIC on a given VLAN, but when my host has more than one (I have one with 9 NICs on one VLAN and 1 on the other), arping -D always returns false collisions. The problem is that all 9 of my NICs respond to an ARP request for any of the IPs on those NICs. (These are real physical NICs, not aliases or anything.) I send out one ARP request packet, and get 9 ARP is-at ARP replies, one for each MAC address. I could implement my own solution by sniffing packets and checking for any replies with a MAC address other than the local NICs', but it seems like there ought to be an easier way.

This time I would like to make it possible to login directly as www-data (the default apache user on debian) to make things a bit cleaner.   I am a math teacher who uses Word 2008 on the Mac, and I need to collaborate with other teachers who are using Word 2007 under Windows. When they send me a document with mathematical equations in it, I can open it but not see the equations or the document loses formatting such as superscript for exponents. On this page of Known Issues in Word 2008, Microsoft says, Equations saved from Word 2007 for Windows do not appear in Word 2008 for Mac Equations saved in Word 2007 for Windows are not supported in Word 2008 for Mac. The equations will be preserved so that they display correctly in Word 2007, but will appear as placeholders in Word 2008. What can I do to collaborate with users of Word 2007 on mathematical documents?

• CentOS 5.4 NFS v4 client file permissions differ from original files & NFS Share file contents

  Having a strange problem with NFS share and file permissions on the 1 out of the 2 NFS clients, web1 has file permissions issues but web2 is fine. web1 and web2 are load balanced web servers. So questions are: how do I ensure NFS share file contents retain the same permissions for user/group as the original files on web1 server like they do on web2 server ? how do I reverse what I did on web1, i tried unmount command and said command not found ? Information: I'm using 3 dedicated server setup. All 3 servers CentOS 5.4 64bit based. servers are as follows: web1 - nfs client with file permissions issues web2 - nfs client file permissions are OKAY db1 - nfs share at /nfsroot web2 nfs client was setup by my web host, while web1 was setup by me. I did the following commands on web1 and it worked with updating db1 nfsroot share at /nfsroot/site_css with latest files on web1 but the file permissions don't stick even if i use tar with -p command to perserve file permissions ? cd /home/username/public_html/forums/script/ tar -zcp site_css/ > site_css.tar.gz mount -t nfs4 nfsshareipaddress:/site_css /home/username/public_html/forums/scripts/site_css/ -o rw,soft cd /home/username/public_html/forums/script/ tar -zxf site_css.tar.gz But checking on web1 file permissions no longer username user/group but owned by nobody ? but web2 file permissions correct ? This is only a problem for web1 while web2 is correct ? Looks like numeric ids aren't the same ? • Keyboard automatically disconnects and reconnects

  The problem i am facing is the keyboard (USB) automatically disconnects when there is a fluctuation in the power supply to the speaker. The speaker and the pc both draw power from a apc ups. The fluctuation occurs because the speaker plug is not tightly connected to the ups power outlet. It is okay for normal work, but a accidental jerk causes the fluctuation. However after some amount of time (usually within 5 seconds) the keyboard automatically reconnects and windows plays the sound of hardware connected. This problem will also occur if I manually take out the speaker power cable from the ups power outlet. My question is whether the problem I am facing is due to electrical issues, or due to software problems. PC config: OS : Windows 7 Ultimate UPS : APC 600 VA PSU : Corsair TX 650 Speaker : Realtek

• CalDAV : request error problem

  We have an xserve which hosts our internal calendars through CalDAV. Personally have 4 calendars from the server set to show in my iCal. Frequently throughout the day at random moments I will get the below error. If I hit ignore, it will just continue to work without any issues. This is more of an annoyance then anything (the dock icon jumping all the time). I have full permission to read anything, so it is not an actual permission issue. Anyone know what might be the issue? • Running hardware with only 32bit drivers in 64bit windows

  Recently we had to upgrade a system to handle added HD IP cameras. This upgrade involved an entirely new computer build with the exception of a rather pricey Geovision DVR (PCI/GV1480 series). Apparently while these cards do support Windows 7, they do not support Windows 7 x64. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place here trying to figure out how we can remedy this, is there a virtualization solution that will allow devices with driver issues to passthru to the Guest OS? I was thinking XPMode may work for this solution however I am unsure if it runs 32bit or 64bit and if it'll allow driver-issue devices to pass to it. • IIS - Forwarding requests to a folder to another port

  Context I currently installed Glassfish 3 in a server that currently holds ASP and PHP inside Internet Information Server 7 so we can start moving to a new system architecture (the information system is being remade). Obviously, Glassfish uses another port and without too much configuration (all I had to do is to install it) it worked. If I write www.domain.com:8080, the person will be redirected to the Glassfish server. Issue Obviously I don't want the person to write the port! I also believe it might also hold some security issues. Requirement I need the server to take an address of the form www.domain.com/gf or new.domain.com or something alike, and when it receives such a request, "redirect" (masking the URL) the user to the Glassfish website (www.domain.com:8080). • Looking for Inneroffice Access Tool, Workstation to Workstation

  This may be a simple question to answer, and I apologize if it's a duplicate. I looked through the suggestions and nothing jumped out at me as the right answer, so here goes: My office has several workstations, Macs and Windows boxes. We do have a firewall and a VPN solution, so getting in to the network from outside is easy. Likewise, we use GoToMeeting for demos and when we help our customers with their issues. But we have one workstation that has certain testing tools on it, and instead of walking across the office to this machine, I'd like to access it from my desk (and monitor it). I will need to open a command line and run commands. I could start a GoToMeeting and do it this way, but that seems overkill and clunky. Is there a simpler tool that allows pseudo-remote access within the same office/network for this kind of access?

• Public IP Routing over Private GRE tunnel

  I have a GRE tunnel configured between two linux boxes. The tunnel works fine. I can ping from each host the other private ip. Head privateip: 10.0.0.1 publicip: 8.8.8.8 Tail privateip: 10.0.0.2 publicip: 7.7.7.7 The public IP on Tail has the network block 9.9.9.0/23 statically routed over the 7.7.7.7 interface. The idea is to make the 9.9.9.0/23 ips work on servers on the 8.8.8.8 network. I configure the tail host to route the /23 block. I mounted a 9.9 IP on the head server. I can ping the 9.9 ip from the tail to the head. I can't ping the 9.9 ip from the public internet. I think I need to add some other routes because of gateway issues, but I can't seem to wrap my mind around it (not a router guy, just beating my way through something that I have never done before and vaguely understand) --danks

• How to debug xsane "no devices available" error on 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04

  I have a Brother MFC-J615W printer/scanner and I wish to use the scanning feature across a network with a computer running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed the drivers from the Brother website and followed all of the instructions, and printing works fine, but xsane (installed from repositories) produces a popup with the message "no devices available" on startup. I recently had success with a similar approach when installing drivers for a Brother MFC-495CW on 32-bit Unbuntu 9.10, so I am aware of issues such as requiring root access if the driver permissions are not set correctly, but running xsane as root does not solve this problem. Are there any tools available to debug this problem further or does anyone have advice on how to proceed?

• Cannot create a new domain in an existing active directory forest

  I have a domain controller setup on Windows Server 2008 R2 (Forest) and I have another Windows Server 2008 R2 (New Domain) and I want to create a new domain in an existing forest. I get the following error: An Active Directory domain controller for the domain mackdev.mackenziecarr.com could not be contacted The error was "no records found for the given DNS query" The query was for the SRV record for: _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.mackdev.mackenziecarr.com I've seem to have tried everything even tried adding this record to the DNS server of the primary forest. I even successfully joined this server to the domain without any issues but trying to create a new domain under the existing forest is no luck. The primary forest I.P. address is 192.168.2.20 the server that I am using to try to make a child domain is 192.168.2.21 My ipconfig are as follows: I.P. Address: 192.168.2.21 Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.2.1 Primary DNS: 192.168.2.20

• Windows 2003 Enterprise Server becomes unresponsive occasionally

  We're experiencing issues with our Windows 2003 server, which runs SQL Server 2005 SP1. We notice that sometimes the entire server becomes unresponsive and I captured a screenshot of the task manager when this happened. I noticed that the processes are not displayed during this time and all of the memory information and handles disappear (as shown in the screenshot). Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong with this sytem? I'm planning to take it down over the weekend to run Memtest86. I also tried to run a ping when this occurred and I got the following error in the event log: "Application popup: ping.exe - Application Error: The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142).
