  What types of sites do you visit, on a regular basis, to stay current on information security issues? Some examples from my list include: http://isc.sans.org/ http://www.kaspersky.com/viruswatch3 http://www.schneier.com/blog/ http://blog.fireeye.com/research/ As well as following the security heavyweights on twitter. I'm curious to hear what resources you recommend for daily monitoring. Anything specific to particular operating systems or other software. Are mailing lists still considered valuable. My goal would be to trim the cruft of all the things I'm currently subscribed to and focus on the essentials.

  There are few applications which use Java 1.6.2x , few 1.7.1X and other uses 1.7.4X versions. Since we decided to push all three applications to the user .How to make the applications to use its particular version. There are few web based apps and enterprise apps which requires only a specific set of java versions which is creating issues. Os : Win 7 IE - ver 8 Work around In Progress : Trying to apply a batch file for each app to set the require java version path , but its not the required solution. Do we have any generic way which automatically maps to its required java version , instead of running batch file for each application. Looking forward your valuable suggestions.

• Connecting a Mac to the office network

  Hi All, I am busy preparing to start working with a Mac at work - in addition to my old PC. Just wondered, is it difficult to setup the Mac to run on the office network - i.e. does it need any special settings or servers or anything like that? and also printers...can I use the network printer as normal. I am just pottrying to think ahead of any ential issues. Also share drives...will I be able to access share drives and my backups to these shares drives - all a bit daunting! • Eclipse Juno failing to start with Java returning 1 error report

• How to avoid Memory "Hard Fault/sec"

  i've a problem on my windows 2008 server x64, and i cannot understand how can i solve it. i'm looking to Resource Monitor and see about 100 to 200 hard faults/sec. and generally the machine is slow. As i've readed a bit it is caused by a "memory Page" that is no longer available on physical memory and causes a io operations (disk) and it is a problem. The current hardware is a intel core2duo E8400 (3.0GHz) with 6GB RAM on a Windows Server Web 64-bit. Actually the machine have about 2GB Ram used what having 4Gb available to use, Why is the machine requires that high level of Disk operations? what can i do to increase the performance? Im experiencing a memory issues? what should be my starting point?

• Odd behavior on Shift-{Esc,Fx}

  Sometimes, when changing between the modes in Vim, I forget to take my finger off the Shift key. This innocent mistake is probably part of the luggage carried over from other terminals, but I have never seen my input treated this way. After changing from command mode to input mode, if I hit the Esc key while the Shift key is down, Vim will display <9b (Control Sequence Introducer) instead of switching to the command mode. • Certain web pages are suddenly not rendering properly in FireFox

  I am using FireFox 3.6.3. I noticed in the last couple of days that several webpages which I visit regularly are not rendering properly. A lot of the text is overlapping with other text and it basically looks like the style sheet is completely screwed up. I have tried disabling all of my Add-Ons and it doesn't make a difference. When I use Coral IE Tab to render the pages using IE they display without any problems. The websites which are not rending properly for me are: The Age Google Reader One interesting thing I noticed is that if I modify the Google Reader URL to not use SSL (i.e. change https to http) it renders without any issues. However, The Age website is not using SSL, and that still doesn't render properly. I have also disabled my Proxy Server (I normally use one at work) but this doesn't make a difference either.

• Diagnosing high CPU waiting

  I have a monitoring server that is running icinga/collectd/graphite with about 50 hosts. I have noticed high load/slugging performance on the box. If you take a look at top, you'll see: Cpu(s): 0.6%us, 0.2%sy, 0.0%ni, 7.6%id, 23.4%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.2%si, 0.0%st Notice the HUGE %wa value, which as far as I know means a network or disk bottleneck. ifconfig shows no dropping packets and there's not a ton of bandwidth going on, so that leaves disk issues, right? There's not a lot of disk writing going on either...iotop is reporting we're only writing a little over 1 MB per second and the RAID tool reports everything is A-OK and write caching is enabled. How do I go about trying to figure out how to fix this?   I've started getting an error on my windows machine when sending an email through Windows Mail, using Mobile Me: An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Test' Server Error: 503 Server Response: 503 5.7.0 TLS already in use. Server: 'smtp.me.com' Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC65 Protocol: SMTP Port: 587 Secure(SSL): Yes I've checked and double-checked my credentials, and outbound mail settings, and they're correct. I've deleted and re-added the account, and I get the same issue. I'm able to receive email fine. Note - this issue only affects one PC - my laptop has no issues. Any suggestions on what Error 503 means, or how I would fix this?

• Stable MSN messenger for mac?

  I use Adium in my mac as a client for MSN messenger. (I have also tried the "official" live messenger for mac for a while but it had even worse issues than what I am experiencing with Adium). Everything works fine for the first 5-10 minutes, perhaps until the first automatic "away", then suddenly any message I send is followed by a dozen or so messages saying: "Message could not be sent because a connection error occurred:" and Message may have not been sent because a timeout occurred: If I send a few messages, they usually eventually arrive (all at once) after a long delay. Windows machines on the same network running live messenger work fine. Any ideas why this might be, or suggestions for a client that might work when both Adium and Microsofts own messenger for mac seem to disconnect?

• DNS Propagation Investigation Techniques?

  So I changed the nameservers to veeter.com about 5 days ago now - and the domain is still not resolving over the net. It does intermittently, but then cuts out again every few hours. I run 10+ other domains through the same dedicated server (running CentOS/WHM) and they are all up - so it has nothing to do with that. I have asked my dedicated server support staff what the problem might be, they told me to "log into WHM and click on 'Add a DNS Zone' under the 'DNS Functions' section on the left hand side of the screen. Once you have done this and dns fully propagates it should resolve any intermittent dns issues you may be experiencing." BUT there is already a DNS zone in place for the domain on my server - so what should I do

• SQL Server Instancing: Should I use multiple instances or databases?

  I have a reasonable server connected to a SAN which will be running SQL servers for multiples of the same application. There are no security issues with one application being able to read anothers database. We are unfortunately in 32 bit windows as well. I'm of the opinion that it would be better to use one instance on the server, enable AWE so that the server instance can use almost all of the ram we have and then run each of the databases in the one instance. However I've been overruled by the gods of the IT department on this one, so I'm really curious to hear your thoughts on this. From a performance point of view, am I incorrect that one instance of SQL is better than two? I know that we could do some failover stuff, but doing that on one blade only seems like overkill to me..

• Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter Sound Stopped Working

  I have cancelled cable and want to watch the NCAA tournament games on my TV tonight through my 2011 Macbook Pro where I can stream the game in a browser. I have a cheap Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI converter that I have connected to my TV in the past and had no issues with audio or video, the problem is the audio has stopped working since the last time I used it a few months ago and now just keeps playing through the laptop speakers, but the video works fine. Everything with my setup is the same and when I try to force the audio output to the TV in the Audio system settings, my TV is not listed as an output option at all. I have tried various combinations of power cycling, replugging-in both devices and making sure the TV options are set properly to receive audio through HDMI but no luck. Anyone know what the issue could be?

My only option is to downgrade my version since I'm not an admin to the server. Does my Client Access License an issue? Can I just downgrade my security update to match the one in the server? If there is would you please be kind enough to tell me how. ?

• Windows 7 Media Center suddenly Jerky..

  Media Center in Windows 7 has been running great for me for the past few months since I switched to Windows 7. I can watch HD content on my Xbox, and I have had very few issues with it (occasionally it has locked up on the Xbox, but restarting the Xbox usually fixes that). All of a sudden it has gotten jerky, SD content playing on my computer (not even streaming to the Xbox) is Jerky. VLC and Windows Media Player play the same content perfectly, it is just when it is playing in Windows Media Center (whether streaming or not). Any ideas what could be the cause of this? And yes I have reboot several times...

• RAID - software vs. hardware

  I have always used hardware based raid because it (IMHO) it's on the right level (feel free to dispute this) and that OS failures are more common to me than hardware issues. Thus if the OS fails the raid is gone and so is the data, where on a hardware level regardless of OS the data remains. However on a recent Stack Overflow podcast they stated they would not used hardware raid as the software raid is better developed and thus runs better. So my question is, is there any reasons to choose one over the other?

• apache2 installation conflicts with previous lampp content

  hej, i downloaded xampp-linux-1.7.3a.tar.gz and installed it manually, not with aptitude. That was a mistake as proved later, due to some configurational issues i decided to remove it and install it via aptitude install apache2. Now the previous lampp conflicts with the new apache2, i get this error message. Starting web server apache2 apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80 no listening sockets available, shutting down how can delete the existing lampp files entirely or how can i configure apache2 to work as intended ? any help will be appreciated

• SQL Server iSCSI session issue with a NetApp SAN

  We had an issue early this morning when iSCSI issues broke connectivity with a few of our databases (resulting in a SQL Server Error 21). Attempts to DBCC CheckDB did not work, and the only solution was to restart the SQL Service. Is there a known reason why an iSCSI initiator session would reset itself out of the blue? Example below from the NetApp syslog. This set of errors was replicated 4 times (once for each SQL server in production). Only one SQL server was noticeably impacted, however. • Network connectivity logs on OSX

  I'm trying to determine whether or not Macs store a log of network connectivity. Specifically, I'm trying to find out if one of my machines (Mac Tower, OSX 10.7.4, 2-2.26 GHz, 16 GB DDR3) lost connection to pinpoint an issue. This machine is on an external network where and the IT staff is not very helpful, so I'm trying to ensure that there were network issues rather than some other local issue on that particular machine. Can you pull network logs thru Console that show when a network connection was established and was disconnected?

• HTTP downloads slow - FTP of same file very fast - Windows 2003

  I am having some issues with download speeds on my site via http, i am averaging around 70kbps downloading a file that is around 70mb. But if i connect to my server via FTP and download the same file on the same computer / connection i am averaging about 300+kbps. I know my server has alot of connections at any one time, probably around 400 connections. My server has a 1gbps connection to the internet so there is plenty of bandwidth available, as proven with the FTP. I have no throttling of any kind enabled in IIS. • differencing disk opinions

  I've read about the performance issues with dfferencing disks but I still think there is a solid place for them and thats the os boot partition. If I'm going to have 20 vms on a csv based volume I don't won't to waste the 20+ gigs per guest just for the os boot. If I get a good base disk with all of the most used applications installed and have the pagefile located somewhere else I don't think the delta's would be that great thus it should not create a performance issue. Also in a SAN based csv volumes does it make any sense in having the pagefile go to a seperate csv volume? Any opinions on this? thanks

• Easy Transfer from a dead computer

  I had a computer that electrocuted me and the company sent me a new one. The hard drive from the old computer works fine and is in my new computer. I would like to transfer my files from the old drive to the new one, preferably using Easy Transfer (old & new computers were Win7). When I go through the Easy Transfer wizard, it assumes my old computer is running and that I can run a process to backup all my data to a single file. However, in my case I have the system drive in my new computer and want to pull the data off it. I would like to avoid rebooting the old computer, to avoid damage to myself or my data. I would like to avoid booting into the old system drive, as my new hardware is significantly different and I imagine I'll run into some missing hardware issues. What's the easiest way to get my data off this drive?
