• Java EE 8 update

  Planning for Java EE 8 is now well underway. As you know, a few weeks ago, we conducted a three part Java EE 8 Community Survey (you can find the final summary here). The data gathered have been very influential for the next steps. You can now expect over the coming weeks and months to see updates on the various specifications that compose the Java EE platform. Some Specification Leads are busy gathering additional feedback regarding what they should focus their efforts on (e.g. CDI 2 survey). Other Specification Leads have already publicly exposed what they think should be one of the focus for the evolution of the specification they lead.  For example, adding Server-Senet Events (SSE) support in JAX-RS is being discussed here and adding MVC support is being discussed here. Please remember that the fact we are now discussing any feature does not insure that it will be included in the proposal, nor in any particular update to Java EE. We can expect additional enhancements, changes and evolutions as we get closer to the finalisation of the different specifications... and there is still a long way to go with these specification proposals! Linda DeMichiel, Java EE Co-Specification Lead, has recently posted a draft proposal for the Java EE 8 Platform specification. Linda's goal is to recruit people and companies supporting this proposal before submitting it to the JCP.  This draft proposal is very interesting reading as it contains relevant information on the plans for Java EE 8 such as : The themes: Support for the latest web standards (eg. HTTP 2.0)  Continue to work on ease of development Improve the infrastructure for cloud support Alignment with Java SE 8 New JSRs to be added to the platform: J-Cache Java API for JSON Binding Java Configuration Plans for the Web Profile Plans on technologies to prune in Java EE 8, ... So if you haven't done it yet, I really encourage you to read the Java EE 8 draft proposal! Our goal for the Java EE 8 specification is for it to be finalized in the second half of 2016. It is important to note that we are in the early days of Java EE 8 and at this stage everything (themes, content, timing, etc.) is preliminary. Everything still needs to be discussed, challenged and agreed within the different Java Community Process (JCP) Experts Groups (EGs). Some EGs that still need to be formed! It could also means that the roadmap will have to be adjusted to follow the progress being made in the different EGs. This is also a good occasion to remind you that participation within those upcoming JCP Experts Groups is encouraged. Contributing in an EG is an effective lever to influence what Java EE 8 will become! Finally, as things get more concrete, we will share details on how to engage in the different Java EE 8 related Adopt-a-JSR initiatives, another way to contribute. You can also read other posts related to Java EE 8, here at The Aquarium blog. • 2008 Datacenter Word Automation issue

  We have an application that uses word automation. It works fine under Windows XP, but does not work on our Windows Server 2008 64-bit virtual machine running on VMware ESX unless it is running as the domain administrator. Under any other account (including a local admin), Word starts, uses a lot of CPU for 40 seconds when opening a document, and then just hangs. Our application does not access anything not on the local machine, and this machine is not being used for anything else (not a domain controller, etc). I know others have posted similar issues, with the solution of creating a Desktop folder somewhere under the windows directory. We did this, and it did not solve the problem (Word did not get as far as it did before we did this though). Please don't turn this into a thread about why I am trying to do this, whether I should do this, or whether I need to. For argument sake, I don't need to do this, but understanding what privilege a local admin does not have that is needed to do this is a legitimate concern.

• Simplifying Human Capital Management with Mobile Applications

  By Aaron Green If you're starting to think 'mobility' is a recurring theme in your reading, you'd be right. For those who haven't started to build organisational capabilities to leverage it, it's fair to say you're late to the party. The good news: better late than never. Research firm eMarketer says the worldwide smartphone audience will total 1.75 billion this year, while communications technology and services provider Ericsson suggests smartphones will triple to 5.6 billion globally by 2019. It should be no surprise, smart phone adoption is reaching the farthest corners of the globe; the subsequent impact of enterprise applications enabled by these devices is driving business performance improvement and will continue to do so. Companies using advanced workforce analytics can add significantly to the bottom line, while impacting customer satisfaction, quality and productivity. It's a statement that makes most business leaders sit forward in their chairs. Achieving these three standards is like sipping The Golden Elixir for the business world. No-one would argue their importance. So what are 'advanced workforce analytics?' Simply, they're unprecedented access to workforce trends and performance markers. Many are made possible by a mobile world and the enterprise applications that come with it on smart devices. Some refer to it as 'the consumerisation of IT'. As this phenomenon has matured and become more widely appreciated it has impacted the spectrum of functional units within an enterprise differently, but powerfully. Whether it's sales, HR, marketing, IT, or operations, all have benefited from a more mobile approach. It has been the catalyst for improvement in, and management of, the employee experience. The net result of which is happier customers. The obvious benefits but the lesser realised impact Most people understand that mobility allows for greater efficiency and productivity, collaboration and flexibility, but how that translates into business outcomes within the various functional groups is lesser known. In actuality mobility has helped galvanise partnerships between cross-functional groups within the enterprise. Where in some quarters it was once feared mobility could fragment a workforce, its rallying cry of support is coming from what you might describe as an unlikely source - HR. As the bedrock of an enterprise, it is conceivable HR might contemplate the possible negative impact of a mobile workforce that no-longer sits in an office, at the same desks every day. After all, who would know what they were doing or saying? How would they collaborate? It's reasonable to see why HR might have a legitimate claim to try and retain as much 'perceived control' as possible. The reality however is mobility has emancipated human capital and its management. Mobility and enterprise applications are expediting decision making. Google calls it Zero Moment of Truth, or ZMOT. It enables smoother operation and can contribute to faster growth. From a collaborative perspective, with the growing use of enterprise social media, which in many cases is being driven by HR, workforce planning and the tangible impact of change is much easier to map. This in turn provides a platform from which individuals and teams can thrive. With more agility and ability to anticipate, staff satisfaction and retention is higher, and real time feedback constant. The management team can save time, energy and costs with more accurate data, which is then intelligently applied across the workforce to truly engage with staff, customers and partners. From a human capital management (HCM) perspective, mobility can help you close the loop on true talent management. It can enhance what managers can offer and what employees can provide in return. It can create nested relationships and powerful partnerships. IT and HR - partners and stewards of mobility One effect of enterprise mobility is an evolution in the nature of the relationship between HR and IT from one of service provision to partnership. The reason for the dynamic shift is largely due to the 'bring your own device' (BYOD) movement, which is transitioning to a 'bring your own application' (BYOA) scenario. As enterprise technology has in some ways reverse-engineered its solutions to help manage this situation, the partnership between IT (the functional owner) and HR (the strategic enabler) is deeply entrenched. And it has to be. The CIO and the HR leader are faced with compliance and regulatory issues and concerns around information security and personal privacy on a daily basis, complicated by global reach and varied domestic legislation. There are tens of thousands of new mobile apps entering the market each month and, unlike many consumer applications which get downloaded but are often never opened again after initial perusal, enterprise applications are being relied upon by functional groups, not least by HR to enhance people management. It requires a systematic approach across all applications in use within the enterprise in order to ensure they're used to best effect. No turning back, and no desire to With real time analytics on performance and the ability for immediate feedback, there is no turning back for managers. In my experience with Oracle, our customers' operational efficiency is at record levels. It's clear as a result of the combination of individual KPIs and organisational goals, CIOs have been able to give HR leaders the ability to build predictive models that feed into an enterprise organisations' evolving strategy. It also helps them ensure regulatory compliance much more easily. Once an arduous task, with mobile enabled automation and quality data, compliance is simpler. Their world has changed for the better. For the CIO, mobility also assists them to optimise performance. While it doesn't come without challenges, mobile-enabled applications and the native experience users have with them means employees don't need high-level technical expertise to train users. It reduces the training and engagement required from the IT team so they can focus on other things that deliver value to the bottom line; all the while lowering the cost of assets and related maintenance work by simplifying processes. Rewards of a mobile enterprise outweigh risks With mobile tools allowing us to increasingly integrate our personal and professional lives, terms like "office hours" are becoming irrelevant, so work/life balance is a cultural must. Enterprises are expected to offer tools that enable workers to access information from anywhere, at any time, from any device. Employees want simplicity and convenience but it doesn't stop at private enterprise. This is a societal shift. Governments, which traditionally have been known to be slower to adopt newer technology, are also offering support for local businesses to go mobile. Several state government websites have advice on how to create mobile apps and more. And as recently as last week the Victorian Minister for Technology Gordon Rich-Phillips unveiled his State government's ICT roadmap for the next two years, which details an increased use of the public cloud, as well as mobile communications, and improved access to online data-sets. Tech giants are investing significantly in solutions designed to simplify mobile deployment and enablement. The mobility trend is creating a wave of change in the industry and driving transformation in the enterprise. If you're not on that wave, the business risk continues to rise as your competitiveness drops. • computer:// in gksudo nautilus

  I am curious what computer:// is, in terms its implementation on the file system/in the nautilus executable/as a configuration provided to nautilus? Perhaps it is a configurable group (of paths) for nautilus, configurable on a user basis. The reason I ask is because it is not accessible with root's nautilus. If #1 is correct, how does one create computer:// and/or how does one create such path groups?

• Problem w/ Paperclip, MacPorts, ImageMagick & Snow Leopard

  I'm attempting to use ImageMagick along w/ Paperclip to handle the images on my rails app. The problem is whenever I try to upload an image I get the following in the terminal: [paperclip] An error was received while processing: #<Paperclip::NotIdentifiedByImageMagickError: /var/folders/go/goZ833AaFaqyvv5RnLqQmE+++TM/-Tmp-/stream20110107-6356-1xfs9j1-0.jpg is not recognized by the 'identify' command.> I have added the following to my environments/development.rb file: Paperclip.options[:command_path] = "/usr/local/bin" If I try to interact w/ ImageMagick in the terminal by using "convert" or something similar I get: dyld: Library not loaded: /opt/local/lib/libltdl.7.dylib Referenced from: /usr/local/bin/convert Reason: Incompatible library version: convert requires version 10.0.0 or later, but libltdl.7.dylib provides version 9.0.0 Trace/BPT trap I've already tried updating everything w/ port but the problem still persists. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

  Basically, I want to learn lots of programming languages to become a great programmer. I know only a handful to depth and I was hoping someone could elaborate on how many classes or types of programming languages there are. Like how you would lump them together if you had to learn them in groups. Coming from a Java background, I'm familiar with static typing, but I know that in addition to dynamic typing there has to be such variety in available languages that I would love to see a categorical breakdown if possible.

• OpenExeConfiguration Path Issue

  I'm trying to load an web.config from a server. Its placed at: \server\folders\web.config when i try this: ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(@"\\server\folders\web.config"); it searches for: web.config.config and fails. ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(@"\\server\folders\web"); it fails, because there is no folder \server\folders\web\ So i tried several things and it seems as its checking wether the file the path is pointing on exists, and afterwards it appliers a .config and gets the config file. Just for fun i created an web.loaders file, and a web.loaders.config file. with ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(@"\\server\folders\web.local"); it loads the \server\folders\web.local.config perfectly, but throws Exceptions without the web.local file. So there a many ways to get this small thing loaded, but isn't there a more nice one than using a temp .web file or something? Any help i highly appreciated, yours Harry

• Are returned locals automatically xvalues

  Following on from a comment I made on this: passing std::vector to constructor and move semantics Is the std::move necessary in the following code, to ensure that the returned value is a xvalue? std::vector<string> buildVector() { std::vector<string> local; // .... build a vector return std::move(local); } It is my understanding that this is required. I have often seen this used when returning a std::unique_ptr from a function, however GManNickG made the following comment: It is my understanding that in a return statement all local variables are automatically xvalues (expiring values) and will be moved, but I'm unsure if that only applies to the returned object itself. So OP should go ahead and put that in there until I'm more confident it shouldn't have to be. :) Can anyone clarify if the std::move is necessary? Is the behaviour compiler dependent?

• errors with gae-sessions and nose

  I'm running into a few problems with adding gae-sessions to a relatively mature GAE app. I followed the readme carefully and also looked at the demo. First, just adding the gaesesions directory to my app causes the following error when running tests with nose and nose-gae: Exception ImportError: 'No module named threading' in <bound method local.__del__ of <_threading_local.local object at 0x103e10628>> ignored All the tests run fine so not a big problem but suggests that something isn't right. • users disappear from options menu when given uids under 1000

  I wanted to stop particular user names appearing in the list of names at the log in screen. I remembered reading that this could be achieved by changing the user id of the account to something less than 1000 (I think I made it 990). So I did this. That worked fine, but now when I wanted to change it back, the name is not appearing in the list of user accounts in the users and groups menu under administration. How do I modify the phantom account?
