• Seperate compilation in C++

  Suppose you are creating a class with multiple .cpp files (which each contain the implementation of a member function) and have the class' declaration in a .h file. Also, each .cpp file includes the .h file via the include directive. I was told that if you change the implementation of any of the member functions (.cpp files) that you will have to recompile every .cpp file in order to run the program. That is, if I had 5 member functions (each implemented in a .cpp file) and I changed the implementation of 1 of the .cpp files I would have to compile the 1 .cpp file I changed AND the 4 other .cpp files I didn't change in order to correctly run my program. My question, if the previous statement is true, is why is the statement is true? Any insight on this concept would be helpful.

• Best way to store application images taken via camera

  Hi all, I'm just looking for some insight into what would be the best way for me to store images as part of my app. I have an activity that represents a 'Job' which has a couple of edittext's and underneath was planning on using the Gallery component to show images relevant to this job. The job data is stored in a database (on the sdcard) so was also thinking of creating a table to store 'JobImages' and having each image stored as a byte array. But I'm not sure if it would be better to store the images directly on sdcard under a folder structure specific to my application and the job. E.g. using the job ID number as a folder name. Depending on which method I use will greatly determine the code that goes into an 'adapter' that allows me to bind to the gallery component so before I begin I was wondering if anyone has had the same design problem and what option they chose.   I've been using .NET's Entity Framework a lot lately and have absolutely no wish to go back to using Stored Procedures. Been shocked though that the company I'm building this project for had a policy where applications were only given accounts that only had permissions to access stored procedures! Apparently, they believe that there's a security risk involved in allowing applications to access the tables/views directly. I don't get this. My first question is, can someone enlighten me as to what kind of security risk applications having direct access to the database may pose? AND If that's the case, are there any other ORM solutions that can provide a workaround to this (I can't think of any logical possibility atm) that would allow me to circumvent the restrictions on the user account to be assigned to me? OR is my understanding that I'd need direct permissions for the tables and views wrong?

• Fastest way to move records from a oracle DB into MS sql server after processing

  Hi.. Ok this is the scenario...I have a table in Oracle that acts like a queue... A VB.net program reads the queue and calls a stored proc in MS SQL Server that processes and then inserts the message into another SQL server table and then deletes the record from the oracle table. We use a datareader to read the records from Oracle and then call the stored proc for each of the records. The program seems to be a little slow. The stored procedure itself isnt slow. The SP by itself when called in a loop can process about 2000 records in 20 seconds. BUt when called from the .Net program, the execution time is about 5 records per second. I have seen that most of the time consumed is in calling the stored procedure and waiting for it to return. Is there a better way of doing this? Due to my requirement, I don't want to call the function after the documents' loaded, but rather to call it later when I need it.   I have a page that is pulling in via an iframe a page of html content from a pre-existing content management system, whose content I can not directly change. I want to use jquery to alter some of the links and button locations dynamically. For links within the page I was able to change the href attr values of <a href="/content.asp">more</a> from content.asp to content2.asp using $("a[href^='/content.asp']") .each(function() { this.href = this.href.replace("content.asp", "content2.asp"); }); But the page pulled in also has form buttons that contains javascript onclick functions e.g. <INPUT type="button" value="Add to basket" onClick="document.location='/shopping-basket.asp?mode=add&id_Product=1076';"> I basically want to use jquery to select any such buttons and change the shopping-basket.asp to shopping-basket2.asp How can I select these buttons/onclick functions and change the location string?

• Simplifying const Overloading?

  Hello all- I've been teaching a C++ programming class for many years now and one of the trickiest things to explain to students is const overloading. I commonly use the example of a vector-like class and its operator[] function: template <typename T> class Vector { public: T& operator[] (size_t index); const T& operator[] (size_t index) const; }; I have little to no trouble explaining why it is that two versions of the operator[] function are needed, but in trying to explain how to unify the two implementations together I often find myself wasting a lot of time with language arcana. The problem is that the only good, reliable way that I know how to implement one of these functions in terms of the other is with the const_cast/static_cast trick: template <typename T> const T& Vector<T>::operator[] (size_t index) const { /* ... your implementation here ... */ } template <typename T> T& Vector<T>::operator[] (size_t index) { return const_cast<T&>(static_cast<const Vector&>(*this)[index]); } The problem with this setup is that it's extremely tricky to explain and not at all intuitively obvious. When you explain it as "cast to const, then call the const version, then strip off constness" it's a little easier to understand, but the actual syntax is frightening,. Explaining what const_cast is, why it's appropriate here, and why it's almost universally inappropriate elsewhere usually takes me five to ten minutes of lecture time, and making sense of this whole expression often requires more effort than the difference between const T* and T* const. I feel that students need to know about const-overloading and how to do it without needlessly duplicating the code in the two functions, but this trick seems a bit excessive in an introductory C++ programming course. My question is this - is there a simpler way to implement const-overloaded functions in terms of one another? Or is there a simpler way of explaining this existing trick to students? Thanks so much!

• Does program need additional symbols from .so shared library except those declared in header file?

  In C programming, I thought that a object file can be successfully linked with a .so file as long as the .so file offers all symbols which have been declared in the header file. Suppose I have foo.c, bar.h and two libraries libbar.so.1 and libbar.so.2. The implementation of libbar.so.1 and libbar.so.2 is totally different, but I think it's OK as long as they both offers functions declared in bar.h. I linked foo.o with libbar.so.1 and produced an executable: foo.bin. This executable worked when libbar.so.1 is in LD_LIBRARY_PATH.(of course a symbolic link is made as libbar.so) However, when I change the symbolic link to libbar.so.2, foo.bin could not run and complainted this: undefined symbol: _ZSt4cerr I found this symbol type is 'B' and it does not appear in libbar.so.2. Obviously this symbol has nothing to do with those functions I decared in bar.h. What's wrong here?

• Parallel Processing Simulation in Javascript

  Hello, I'm new to JavaScript so forgive me for being a n00b. When there's intensive calculation required, it more than likely involves loops that are recursive or otherwise. Sometimes this may mean having am recursive loop that runs four functions and maybe each of those functions walks the entire DOM tree, read positions and do some math for collision detection or whatever. While the first function is walking the DOM tree, the next one will have to wait its for the first one to finish, and so forth. Instead of doing this, why not launch those loops-within-loops separately, outside the programs, and act on their calculations in another loop that runs slower because it isn't doing those calculations itself? Retarded or clever? Thanks in advance!

  The architecture of the application is straight forward. There is a web application which maintain account holder data. This data is processed and the status of account holders is updated based on number of business rules. This process is initiated using a button on the page and is a long running process (say 15 mins). A component is developed to do this data processing which internally calls stored procedures. Most of the business rules are kept in stored procedure. To handle timeouts the processing is done asynchornously(using Thread Pool or custom thread or Async Callback Delegates). The entire process run under a transaction. I would like to know your view on what happens to the transaction if the app pool is recycled or the worker process is terminated forcefully?

  I am writing matrix classes. Doing this is no problem: generic_square_matrix<T, 4> m = generic_matrix<T, 4, 4>(); It is possible to assign any square matrix to M, even though the type is not generic_square_matrix, due to the constructor. This is possible because the data does not change across children, only the supported functions. This is also possible: generic_square_matrix<T, 4> m = generic_square_matrix<T, 5>().minor(1,1); Same conversion applies here. But now comes the problem: generic_square_matrix<T, 4>().minor(1,1).foo(); //problem, foo is not in generic_matrix<T, 3, 3> To solve this I would like generic_square_matrix::minor to return a generic_square_matrix instead of a generic_matrix. The only possible way to do this, I think is to use template specialisation. But since a specialisation is basically treated like a separate class, I have to redefine all functions. I cannot call the function of the non-specialised class as you would do with a derived class, so I have to copy the entire function. This is not a very nice generic-programming solution, and a lot of work. C++ almost has a solution for my problem: a virtual function of a derived class, can return a pointer or reference to a different class than the base class returns, if this class is derived from the class that the base class returns. generic_square_matrix is derived from generic_matrix, but the function does not return a pointer nor reference, so this doesn't apply here. Is there a solution to this problem (possibly involving an entirely other structure; my only requirements are that the dimensions are a template parameter and that square matrices can have additional functionality). But I'm scratching by head how to use the functions to achieve this. Any idea how to achieve this in Perl ?

  Hi, I'm working on a small academic research about extremely long and complicated functions in the Linux kernel. I'm trying to figure out if there is a good reason to write 600 or 800 lines-long functions. For that purpose, I would like to find a tool that can extract a function from a .c file, so I can run some automated tests on the function. For example, If I have the function cifs_parse_mount_options() within the file connect.c, I'm seeking a solution that would roughly work like: extract /fs/cifs/connect.c cifs_parse_mount_options and return the 523 lines of code(!) of the function, from the opening braces to the closing braces. Of course, any way of manipulating existing software packages like gcc to do that, would be most helpful too.   How to get function's name from function's pointer in C? Edit: The real case is: I'm writing a linux kernel module and I'm calling kernel functions. Some of these functions are pointers and I want to inspect the code of that function in the kernel source. But I don't know which function it is pointing to. I thought it could be done because, when the system fails (kernel panic) it prints out in the screen the current callstack with function's names. But, I guess I was wrong... am I?

As of PHP 5.2.x, only interfaces can have them. My question is: can someone explain in a clear way why there shouldn't be an abstract static function in PHP?

• How to generate multiple Alter Scripts in SSMS

  I'm using sql server management studio 2008 to try and generate an alter script for each of my stored procedures in order to save the scripts for each revision. I can easily generate an alter script for each individual procedure, but I'm not trying to go through a hundred stored procedures manually. I know that SSMS has an automated generate scripts function under task, but the only options are create, drop and create, and drop. I cant seem to figure out how to enable alter. I've already searched through many SO articles, as well as a little digging in msdn, and I've come up with nothing. I'm hoping that the fine people of stackoverflow will be up to the challenge. I've since learned that the MacMini has Apache 2 already installed. So basically I've installed two versions of Apache 2. The preinstalled one has access to PHP, so I wanted to remove my version, but I'm unsure of how. My version has httpd.conf stored at: /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf And the preinstalled version has it stored at: /etc/apache2/httpd.conf, which I believe is an alias for /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf Thanks for your help

I then extract the data I need (a .gif image) using .find() which is stored in 'val'. This image is then inserted into a #BFX div for display. My problem is every successive time I click my button to update this image it shows the image loading from top to bottom as it is reading it in from the web. Is there a way to only display this image once it has fully loaded so the user doesnt see the image loading and only sees the image change instantly.
